  • During the first few days of my time here in Vlorë, Albania I have been blown away. Situated on the shores of the Mediterranean, where the Ionian and Adriatic Seas meet, Vlorë has natural beauty, history and a great deal of national pride. All of that is in a city and in a country that few outsiders even think about visiting.
Join me as I take you around Vlorë and show you some of the places that travelers should get to know. You will be intrigued!

Come along and travel the world with Richard Green. Retiring in the spring of 2023, I am embarking on full-time world travel. I'm going solo, but the idea here is not to focus on me so much. It's about the places and the people along the way.
The title Old, Alone and Far From Home might initially come across as a sad state of being. My mission is to show that it's just the opposite.

Not very professional to call it constantly the Mediterranean!

Very nice. I enjoy watching your videos. Can't understand why the viewers are not in the thousands. Did you find Vlore expensive/moderate/cheap to visit? THanks+

That is so nice of you to say! Hopefully, more viewers will come my way.
I would say that Vlorë is inexpensive, but that's coming from the United States. I would guess that for Albania, it is moderate, since it is a town that has an economy based on tourism.

I’ve just started watching your videos on Albania and I must say I love them. You are very clear in your diction, the content is interesting and informative.
In your video I saw a KFC,my understanding was that these types of Chain Outlets were not permitted in Albania. Did I get the wrong information from somewhere else?
An honest answer to my question : « Could you live permanently in Albania ? «
Looking forward to more of your videos and the answer to my question.

Such nice comments! Thank you very much.
There are some fast food chains from the US in Albania. McDonald's and Starbucks, however, are not among them. Apparently, they are allowed, but they choose not to because of the low prices in the country.
Whether I could live full-time in Albania is an interesting question. I was extremely comfortable in Vlorë, but it might be a little too quiet for me to live there permanently. There might be some other cities in the country though, where that would be possible.
      I appreciate you watching!

Just a correction, because we are sticklers for these things in this part of the world: Aulon was an Illyrian city, not founded by Greek colonizers. It is where the 6th century BCE to 2nd century AD town of Triport was transferred (its ruins lay submerged by the sea north of Vlora. The only cities that were founded by Greek colonizers in Albania's territory are Epidamnus (Durres) and Orikum in the south of Vlora, Apollonia close to Fier. Even those were founded by very small groups of refugees (something like 60 to 200 colons) that mingled with Illyrians and were assimilated. Nevertheless the Greek culture was somewhat absorbed by the indigenous Illyrians, as was the Roman culture later on.
Regardless, your videos on Albania are well researched and very detailed.

I appreciate that. There is so much that I don't know!
It's always great to learn more, even if it is after putting out a video.
Thank you so much for watching!

It is not The Mediterranea Sea, but the Adriatic and Ionean Sea!

The Greek civilization is so old, the Albanians did not exist yet, and this is a truth that you cannot accept. Whatever you say, Greece will always be ahead. Half of Albania is Greek Land. You stole it from us and now you want to steal our Ancient Greek History as well. Let's say this too, because this is a fact.
