For anyone who doesn't know Tetramorium insolens, commonly known as the Singapore ant or tramp ant, is a small, brown to redish ant species known for its adaptability and invasive potential. Worker ants typically measure 3-4 mm, while queens are larger at 6-7 mm. They exhibit a typical ant social structure, with colonies consisting of a queen, workers, and males. These ants are omnivorous, feeding on a variety of food sources, and are highly adaptable to different environments, from natural habitats to urban areas. Their nesting habits include building nests in soil, under stones, or within man-made structures, contributing to their success in human-modified environments. Tetramorium insolens is considered invasive due to its rapid colony growth, aggressive foraging behaviour, and ability to displace native species. It spreads widely through human activity, hitchhiking on plants, soil, and materials, which has allowed it to establish itself in many regions worldwide. The Singapore ant's invasive nature disrupts local ecosystems, outcompeting native ants and impacting the balance of local fauna. Its adaptability, combined with its aggressive behavior, makes it a significant species of concern in many parts of the world. So yes they are indeed invasive

I'm still so happy with this series. It is indeed amazing to be able to see how nature thrives in you're ecosystem and the fact that we are able to see it all unfold before our very eyes. There are so many creatures living underground, procreating, that you never see IRL. The fact that we get to see so many parts of nature because of these vivariums, is amazing. Much love from the Netherlands :)
I'm still learning from your channel and it brings me joy to see how much is really happening, keep up the amazing work. It was originally described from Sulawesi, Indonesia, and has since been recorded from other Indonesian islands, Sri Lanka, Philippines, New Guinea, the Solomon Islands, the Hawaiian Islands, and several more Pacific islands, but also from Los Angeles, California, England, and Germany (Bolton, 1977, 1979). a little information about them
So Tetramorium Insolens is a globally invasive species, but they do originate from Papua New Guinea and surrounding islands. They are also not as highly invasive as the fire ant variants. Finding them isn’t the weirdest nor most worrying thing probably as their range does mean they could have eventually made their way to your location via island hopping the natural way at some point.
At least they originate from the general south east Asia area. That Antscanada is currently living in. I’m looking forward to the next week video where he will give us more information about the new ant and just how bad they are.
I looked at a map a second ago and while they are exotic, dubious/ in error. It’s just outside their native range they’re only considered invasive since 2004… they have been invasive for less time then Pluto has not been a planet. And i believe they are especially contested to be invasive because they are prevalent in Europe. The invasive nature of your region I dare say would be in congestion
@@m0thernature730 precisely. The only place where it’s confirmed invasive due to humans is in Europe, where as all others are either exotic/dubious, which can mean either a mistake was made, are rare examples of island hopping, or one of a myriad of other options. So, technically should be a non-issue.. but we’ll see.

Why do I get a weird feeling when watching the weaver ant stroking the mealy bug to get a little squirt, and now I can’t stop stop thinking about them talking to each other, which makes it *sooo* much worse 😅
@antonionegrea3554 Milking a cow is a LOT more normal. What makes this weird isn't that one species is collecting the excretion of another. It's that weird stroking and stimulating behavior that makes it uncomfortable.
There are numerous invasive species that have integrated into the ecosystems of foreign countries. Rabbits in the UK serve as an example; although they are an invasive species, predators have adapted to place them in a balanced position within the UK's native ecosystem.

Love that Snip’s tail has grown back! I really enjoy seeing all the animals you keep! Such an amazing array of creatures and personalities. I also haven’t seen click beetles, large or small, since I was a kid. Always my favorite to find when exploring under rocks.
That's probably actually a new lizard! When lizards regrow their tails the new growth is generally not as clean, while that lizard looked like a completely clean one-time tail.
@@robbybevard8034 true. I was under the impression that “Snip” was the only one he has seen regularly. There surely could be more since it’s probably impossible to know what all is in there. If there are more than one that survived wouldn’t they all be related since there was only the one male, mating with two females? I wonder if future offspring would be genetically inferior?
@@MommaOhana It would take multiple generations of the same siblings mating before the animals start to see side effects. Presumably if there end up being a lot of them and they reach maturity, they'll be let loose at some point like the parents were, or a few outside ones will be brought in for variety.
I actually think it's adorable and who knew ants could be soooo smart? They are the only other creature other than us to practice farming and agriculture. Absolutely amazing! ❤
This is why I cant believe alot of us have a phone glued to our face. Lol. As soon as you step foot outside, you are surrounded by life. And it's all so fascinating. AC I keep Myrmica rubra myself and have a yt channel about European fire ants. They are not that dangerous and dont nearly grow that fast and big in colony size than Solenopsis spec do. They are also much bigger (around 6mm). They have 2 thorns on their middle segment (propodeum). You can easily identify Myrmica rubra with this method. In one of my videos I show these thorns on the propodeum. I see you already kept Myrmica rubra years ago. The spec the doctor found out is worse than Myrmica rubra / European fire ant I guess. All the best with getting rid of this invasive species and thanks for your hq videos. Always a pleasure to watch.
AC family, if you look at the beetle on the glass at 24:24 , you can watch its specialized mandibles scraping the glass like 2 little spatulas on a hibachi grill. Scraping up any good bits and eating it. How cool of a specialized adaption to have in a world surrounded by glass... like a giant dinner plate lol
Seems like they are actually more beneficial than since they are creating an all you can eat buffet from their dead. Probably balances out the amount of food they are taking out. The bullet ants aren't having to hunt down crickets if they can just eat dead weaver ants.

How the heck did I come across this channel that I can no longer look away from 😳🤯🤯🤯 you really are amazing at telling a story about something your are so very passionate about.
There is a esson here for everybody. Always check your new plants and preferebly wash them before puting them anywhere in your house. Lesson learned the hard way by myself too.
You don't always see the critters. They can be down in the soil and no amount of washing the leaves will affect them. I found that out when I moved my pineapple plant indoors for the winter. There were some fire ants in it which I didn't see because it was cold outside and they were under the soil. I saw them after sitting in a 70 degree house for a few minutes. Luckily there wasn't many, not even 100, which was very odd. There was no queen which I found out later that day when I repotted the plant. Why so few and why they were in that pot is beyond me. After getting the plant out and cleaning it and repotting it, I put the pot back where it was with the ants still in it. The temps kept dropping through the day and they were still in it early the next morning but it did warm up quite a bit and when I checked later that day they were all gone and never came back. Perhaps went back to the nest or because I had disturbed them and took out a food source, they went elsewhere. No idea.
Washing doesn't do anything if they're hiding under the dirt or laid eggs in it. You need to coat the dirt with some stuff to kill anything living in it, but he's obviously hesitant to do that when he's introducing these things to his system. But even some cinnamon will generally do the trick.
i think i heard a mealybug say 'moo'. dude, thank you! i love the opportunity youve given yourself and all of us to share a peek into these animals lives. it warms my heart seeing all of these families and individuals thrive in the home youve crafted for them im sorry about the invasive ants. i hope you find a solution soon.

I lol'd at the last text! Hopefully you can get more close ups of the jumping spider, they're absolutely awesome little ones to watch... probably my favorite spider. We've had an absolute explosion of them where I live near NYC, and I'm absolutely loving it. I had to tell my family and friends in the area to leave them alone since they kill all the really bad stuff, plus mosquitos which are causing a West Nile outbreak in the area. Jumpers are absolutely fascinating to watch... but difficult to follow, best of luck trying to get these quick little buggers on camera! Great video, as always!
It would be interesting to ear an interview or comments from one of the Museum scientists too. Listen to there feed back or impressions about the Vivarium etc... It would look at it in another angle. Maybe not as part of the series but as a one off.

And this is why you should thoroughly rinse off plants, including all soil at the roots, and then quarantine them for a while to make sure there's not any unwanted critters in/on them before blindly tossing them into a vivarium or any other such set-up where you care about the balance of the ecosystem and its hopeful outcome.
Rinsing doesn't do anything if they're beneath the soil. You have to take a bunch of extra steps to purify it which he doesn't want to do. It's fine, the random surprises are part of the experience of the vivarium, he just overplays the "oh no a surprise!" thing for drama.

In any case, I'm thinking of you and the creatures you care for (especially Snip) from France. Looking forward to the next update!

Thank you for this amazing journey. Every week i can't wait for the next episode! I love this so much and you're such a great guy as well :) Keep it up, we'll be here as a part of this journey. I'm still learning from your channel and it brings me joy to see how much is really happening, keep up the amazing work. It was originally described from Sulawesi, Indonesia, and has since been recorded from other Indonesian islands, Sri Lanka, Philippines, New Guinea, the Solomon Islands, the Hawaiian Islands, and several more Pacific islands, but also from Los Angeles, California, England, and Germany (Bolton, 1977, 1979). a little information about them
Mikey each episode intrigues me more. I’m starting to watch each episode twice so not to miss anything.
Seven... grueling... daysssssss@@LycanDreams9159

I mean its not THAT weird, its like milking a cow

The irony, I was woken up this morning by fire ants that got into my house and attacked me in bed
Nice to know that the weavers arent just going on a killstreak destroying everyone
Seems like they are actually more beneficial than since they are creating an all you can eat buffet from their dead. Probably balances out the amount of food they are taking out. The bullet ants aren't having to hunt down crickets if they can just eat dead weaver ants.
Yet.
Not yet anyway. It's only been like 2 weeks.

I'm pretty sure all plants excrete sugars from their roots. When in soil, that sugar feeds micro-organisms. Those break down surrounding nutrients in the soil, making it easier for the roots to uptake what is needed.

This guy is really our animal planet

Great Video my Name suggestion for the "Fire Ants" is Red Ribbon Army.
Tetramorium insolens are Pacific Islanders. So they are the "unwanted neighbor" kind of invasive.
It would be interesting to ear an interview or comments from one of the Museum scientists too. Listen to there feed back or impressions about the Vivarium etc... It would look at it in another angle. Maybe not as part of the series but as a one off.
An animal idea would be Valanga irregularis, a giant grasshopper. That could be interesting.
That sounds interesting
I just realized there's no giant grasshopper in both Pantdora and Orchadia
I have kept those, easy sweet pets and the juveniles ( nymphs) can be colorful yellows, greens and even pink, as well as more common browns and greys.

All he cares about is forcing narratives for his videos, so he can continue doing his back-to-camera bad acting scenes.
Rinsing doesn't do anything if they're beneath the soil. You have to take a bunch of extra steps to purify it which he doesn't want to do. It's fine, the random surprises are part of the experience of the vivarium, he just overplays the "oh no a surprise!" thing for drama.
