    Since all the colonies are too weak, they would not bother risking taking over other colonies, thus showing no serious aggression. Thus, this is the best time to keep the existing setting so they have time to form ally instead of war.

  • @PeterSedesse

    Two hypothesis. First is that the opening of colony one was different than the rest. Second hypothesis is that colony one's scent already claimed the common area so the other colonies didn't want to enter another colonies area. A better experiment would have been to connect all the colonies at the same time rather than allowing the first colony to claim the central area beforehand.

    • @ninjascott559
      @ninjascott559 2 ปีที่แล้ว +233

      Literally all I could think as well. Colony 1 definitely had the advantage by being first.

    • @revirdkcalb
      @revirdkcalb 2 ปีที่แล้ว +124

      I also think it would've been better to have them added at the same time. Colony #1 now had the confidence and first scent advantage. But I guess the guy was scared for it not to turn into a bloodbath.

    • @simonepozzoli
      @simonepozzoli 2 ปีที่แล้ว +38

      To prove that the scent was the cause we could repeat the experiment letting the first colony to get out before others (as he did here) and see if the other colonies get out at some point (would be interesting also to understand when they get out and if they do it all at the same time). Then do another experiment synchronizing the opening and compare the results.
      I don't think the difference in holes matters, all colonies except the fist acted the same way and they had different openings.
      Do you know if he continued with the experiment?

    • @gefferg4516
      @gefferg4516 2 ปีที่แล้ว +31

      Yep as soon as the holes were connected to the 2nd-7th colony the first thing they would notice is a foreign ant’s scent. If you release all of them at once I suspect no ant would reach the jelly. Some might take a few steps outside the hole right away but then smell 6 different scents and retreat

      @AntsCanada  3 ปีที่แล้ว +414

      @@AntsCanadaYou know what you have to do then. Since this is your passion i can understand how you feel about maybe making a decision that kills all colonies.
      What about taking one worker ant from each colony and put them together. Do you think their behavior would be different when there isn’t queen’s present?

    • @CubeBrik
      @CubeBrik 3 ปีที่แล้ว +133

      @@AntsCanada I personally feel it's vital to observe this kind of intermingling. As an ant keeper to be I want to see what the results of this badly. I know mixing ant colony's is a bad idea but if Canada can find a good way todo it I know I would mix my own colonies when presented with the opportunity.
      I hate to be that guy but even if it doesn't go as planned I'd find that information extremely valuable, least of as a 'don't do it this way' sort of thing.
      No one can make AntsCanada do it. But as a fan and fellow ant lover I really really want to know. I really really want to see.

      @@AntsCanada i think it is an acceptable risk you are trying to study ant behavior this is an experiment leave them be and document as much of it as possible and record observations.

    • @namAehT
      @namAehT 3 ปีที่แล้ว +58

      @@AntsCanada even a bad outcome results in new information. I think the fact that the scout regurgitated food and was then let go is a good sign that neither colony is in a position to be hostile.
      Personally I'd like to see a mixing of queens since it's not put of the realm of possibility that sister queens would choose to stay together. They would have the same colony pheromones from their mother nest after all.

    I think the problem was colony 1 was introduced ahead - thus giving their scent to the whole 'arena' which the other colonies are 'respecting' . In other words, the other colonies are probably detecting 'outside' as already the territory of colony 1. I am fascinated how this one has played out after these few days.
    If there haves been no changes, may I suggest removing colony 1 (leave others as is - thus rest having 'equal' starting point)?

    Colony 1 had a very defined opening but the other colonies had their entrances partially covered by the cotton, which might had influenced them into staying inside. Another factor is that when #1 was opened, there were no traces of pheromones in the environment. By the time the other colonies were opened, #1 had already laid several pheromone paths and the other ants did smell that when exploring the possibility of venturing out, so they stayed inside as a natural safety. Really interesting insight into the lives of ants, thanks for sharing!

    • @MaridoDoFelps
      @MaridoDoFelps ปีที่แล้ว +25

      Yes and no
      The smell, yes, could have scared them, but in nature they would probably feel a lit of different colonies scents too
      About the entrance, it may have bored them a little, but you can see colony #1 dragging pieces of cotton with their feet when they enter the chamber so they don't really seem to care, and also ants are used to having to open new passages, and they could feel with they antennae that there was an opening there, they could feel the air and the smell of food from outside.
      We'll never know for sure why they didn't come out at first lol

    • @patrikkarlsson9463
      @patrikkarlsson9463 2 ปีที่แล้ว +213

      Yeah, and I think that opening all of them at once would have made for a better experiment, instead of letting one colony explore the space first. It seemed to me that when the other colonies explored the opening, they detected the scent of the first colony, and therefor avoided venturing out. I wonder if there is a way to entice them to go out despite that. Perhaps giving them a smaller chamber to explore that then connects into the central hub?

    I have a theory as to why the other colonies are so shy. You introduced the first colony way before the others and the first had time to send out scouts too which likely filled the space with foreign smells and that is probably why the other colonies are being so very cautious.

    That little scuffle seems like a good sign to me. Regardless, you can’t be too careful. I’d disconnect all but two colonies and just give them more time to intermingle. That way, we’ll learn more about these ants’ inter-colony behaviours, but not risk all colonies should they turn out to be more aggressive

    • @namAehT
      @namAehT 3 ปีที่แล้ว +7

      It's at the regurgitation of food was more of an offering than a panic response. The fact that there was no retaliation from her original colony shows that none of the colonies are strong enough to go on the offensive.

      @ everyone scrolling through the comments on this: please LIKE so we can boost it to the top and make sure AC reads it.
      I agree that it looks like they may be able to integrate, but, like you said, we don't want to risk everything. The responsible move, I think, would be to separate them... But also, we don't want to make the other colonies look weak, either. Maybe pairing them up in different enclosures would help. That way, they aren't overwhelmed with the scents of six other colonies all at once.
      Here's how I would divide it:
      1 🤝 3
      2 🤝 4 🤝 5
      6 🤝 8
      5 is included in a set of three because introducing her later, when there are tons of other ants that might act aggressive towards her, would be more dangerous (at least, I would assume, based on my limited knowledge of ant behavior), so it's best to try and get her to integrate with a smaller group that can still provide for her.
      If all goes well, the three groups can meet up once they have worked their own situations out, and ideally, that would put each colony under less stress.

      Even if they were released at once, there's no guarantee that the ants would emerge simultaneously. Whichever colony emerges first would mark the area as their territory with their pheromones. That would basically mean game over for the other ants even trying to leave I think.
