I think this is the best opening to a game in the world. Maybe it gets bonus points for being a sequal and having established characters, but seriously, hearing his faith in the alliance that he'll be saved, saving his pilot at the cost of his own life, and watching him fumble in orbit helplessly, as he's soon to be cooked. Really excellent. Maybe bioshock 2's opening has a worthy contender.
them making us watch Shepard die by suffocation after surviving all that shit goes so hard 😂 I love the Lazarus aspect of it all and that they had the balls to actually name the process that ❤ will always love the trilogy
Mass effect 2 is one of my favorite games of all time.. The Mass effect franchise is in my top five favorite games of all time now this is a badass opening scene.. now most people will say that Shepard died but others and I believe this one too in my own opinion that our theory is that he never died he was in a coma.... It's just that there is absolutely no way even with the technology advancement in the Mass effect universe that there's no way to bring people back from the dead because if that was the case... I'm sure certain people or even a government will bring back soldiers especially if you can clone them now I know my theory has flaws but it's kind of cool that we can still debate where people think shepherd died or that Shepherd was just in a coma but regardless badass opening scene..

I interpreted it more as the primal instinctual flailing of a suffocating creature (you can see the oxygen escaping his suit), I don’t think he’s thinking clearly at all at that point.
I've just started my second playthrough of the trilogy, and fussing over starting class, I've seen the intro several times in a row. I finally noticed something about the music in this scene. As well as incorporating a similar "bwahh" sound from the collector beam attack IN the soundtrack, a large part of the ensemble is actually the death screen music. Brilliant! It's not at the forefront, but it subconsciously plants the "game over" scenario in your head. *I don't know shit about music so forgive me if my terminology is wrong.
The more I thought about it the more I despise the plot point that the actual Commander Shepherd just up & fucking died and for the rest of the trilogy you're controlling a bio-automaton with his stolen corpse and hijacked identity.
True, nobody could really know if he is THE original Shepard, not even the person believing it to be true. We will never really know if his brain cells were really reconstructed or just replaced...
Interesting - how do they sleep? I mean - Joker can't been on the bridge 24x7. So there should be at least 2 teams(actually - 3. Working in two shifts is impossible to human minds). You know - space ship is not Truck - you can't stop on the side if the space road to just "wait a bit"
When i complete all chapters of mass effect, now i still understund... Shepard tell that before: "I just a soldier, not more...". In mass effect 2 he is died, but his revive a Cerberus... And in mass effect 3, he is died permanently...
Just think about it - Shep saved her life at least twice - on Eden Prime and on Virmire(sacrificed his own friend) - and after that she betrayed you in mass effect 2/3...
The most unrealistic thing here - is that he fall on the planet. If you know - it just impossible if you already flying in soace around. He should became her satellite for a decade or maybe even a century 😂. Spinning around it...
This scene hits so damn hard if you play ME2 just after ME1...

The damage to the Normandy is phenomenonaly well-detailed. It really conveys that the ship is doomed and cannot be saved.

Yeah especially in that situation Normandy is very damaged you can see that even engines are heavy damaged.

What gave me goose bumps was Shepard trying to pry his mask off to commit suicide before entering that planets atmosphere with only his suit on
