    The best moment at 0:31 imo, where the fleet arrives and just keeps pouring and pouring in. The united galaxy simply summoned everything they had against an equally terryfing enemy, because the stakes have never been higher. Basically the most important fight of the galaxy since ever.

    • @terrivel11

      I've been talking with some buddies, comparing/contrasting this with the fleet arrival from Rise of Skywalker, and how this scene succeedes where the other does not, despite their many similarities.

    • @antonk.653
      @antonk.653 10 หลายเดือนก่อน +3

      @@terrivel11 Interesting comparison, I think you're right. Please elaborate, what did you find out? Why does ME work where Rise of Skywalker doesn't ?

    • @terrivel11
      @terrivel11 10 หลายเดือนก่อน +14

      I'm really bad with nice, concise answers, so you may need to bear with me here.
      However there are several things going against the RoS vs ME3.
      Presentation is the first, in two regards.
      One is the setup. RoS has this really cheesy, "But there are more of us, Poe. There are more of us." line that I thought was really out of place. Then there's the pan over the Xyston to a frankly ludicrous amount of ships that have already appeared. How this fleet arrived and especially coordinated so quickly is a whole issue in of itself, but here a bulk of the fleet has already arrived to save the failing Resistance in what feels very much like a randomly inserted Deus Ex Machina.
      ME3 on the other hand starts out in the cockpit of the Normandy. The calm before the storm. The musical score also builds up before finally fully dropping as the first ships begin to arrive. We see the arrival as it happens, and the score is more of a building heroic epic, as opposed to the already victorious SW main theme.
      Second, I think the sound design of ME3 and the ships coming out of warp is also better. In paths where it survived, you also get the pan over the Destiny Ascension as it appears while STILL hearing the sound of ships arriving in the background. Everything about this scene from the sound/music design to the narrative is just better. The battle scene that follows is also just leagues ahead of RoS, but that's starting to stray into other scene territory.
      On that note though our second issue is intention/history and stakes.
      ME3 is the culmination of three games and hundreds of hours of work minimum on the part of players. Additionally these released happened over the course of an additional year over the sequel trilogy, 5 years vs 4.
      Not getting into the nature of video games vs movies, there are still major stakes if the Galactic fleets fail. The Reapers threaten ALL sentient life in the galaxy, not the just the political state of the Resistance/New Republic. It is way easier to get invested in the ME3 scene, even discounting the sense of personal investment. The galactic fleets already KNOW they're basically screwed. They're not there to win the fight. Their only purpose in life is to stall for time, to hope that Shephard can get to the Citadel and activate the Crucible. It's a lot like the history of Operation Zero Dawn in a way. Humanity's fighting a losing battle, and their only purpose is to stall so the Zero Dawn scientists can finish the terraforming project.
      However in Horizon Zero Dawn, THEY DIDN'T KNOW THAT. They thought they were working on a super weapon to stop the Faro Plague. The Galactic fleet knew, and still had the balls to fly into certain death.
      The Resistance thought they had a fighting chance, and everything fell apart, for them to be saved at the last minute by a fleet that somehow got assembled, which is our third point.
      There are just so many logical issues/inconsistencies in this. Memory does not serve correctly, but we do remember that they needed some kind of Macguffin in order to get to Exegol safely. It seemed really improbable that they would manage to get such a massive fleet there even WITH the Macguffin, if it were available to be distributed in such a manner, ignoring the fact that Lando somehow managed to gather and coordinate TENS of thousands of ships in what must have been a relatively small timeframe. There's some pretty big suspension of disbelief going on. It was some kind of navigation data or tool if I'm remembering correctly. Safe path through a bunch of blackholes or something?
      Either way, it was just one other thing on top of the whole laundry list of things that were just not right with the sequel movies.

    • @antonk.653
      @antonk.653 10 หลายเดือนก่อน +13

      @@terrivel11 I agree on all points, and I would like to add one little thing. In ME3, the story is told from the player's perspective, where they are within the arriving fleet, plus the 100 hours of gathering the galaxy to join this fleet (you also got the feeling that you were in control, sort of).
      In Star Wars the deus ex machina fleet suddenly arrived from outside without much plot.

    • @terrivel11
      @terrivel11 10 หลายเดือนก่อน +4

      @@antonk.653 The sudden nature of it all was really the big sticking point of it all in regards to a Deus Ex Machina. Done right, they can be really effective. Super Saiyan for instance is a form of it, though not nearly as suddenly inserted. Even if it weren’t something that Vegeta had been alluding to in his prior fight with Freeza, the whole journey and then loss of Krillin Goku went through to get there was narratively satisfying.

    • @anleashed69
      @anleashed69 ปีที่แล้ว +43

      If I remember right there was a lore reason for that.
      There's a treaty limiting the number of dreadnoughts that the races of the council could've, but the Alliance got around that by having carrier class ships which were non-existent in the other races, hence why only human small crafts.
      Of course, Geth had small fighter class ships, but then having to make another cutscene to have them is meh... To expensive. :D

    • @whyjnot420
      @whyjnot420 ปีที่แล้ว +15

      I am actually just simply happy that if you pay attention, you can see a couple of Alliance dreadnoughts come in along the mass of cruisers. For all the game lore makes of dreadnoughts, they really get a miniscule amount of screen time. Sure the Destiny Ascension gets a little, but that is still just one ship which is also a one-off as well. By the time of this battle if you tally up how many dreadnoughts _could_ have been at the battle, you end up with around 100 (Turians + Geth = somewhere around 70 by themselves). Counting all the races at pre-war levels. Even if half of those are actually destroyed or otherwise out of action, that still leaves 50 or so in action that could and by all rights should be there.
      A note on carriers: While humans are the first to utilize this concept in space warfare, other species start doing the same thing pretty quickly. Read enough of the codex and you will see references to carriers of other species here and there. btw, you probably have to think of these kinds of carriers as nothing more than a giant frame designed to carry tons of fighters/interceptors. Something like the body of a zeppelin, with gates at either end (maybe in other places, but you get the idea). With just enough armor that minor attacks are not life threatening. Not exactly a big engineering feat for anyone who can build dreadnoughts, which alongside the main gun have 150 or so broadside guns.

      @GrasshopperKelly ปีที่แล้ว +11

      @@whyjnot420 Turian's already used fighter tenders. Like sea plane tenders. Not intended to carry them through relays, but used for off battlefield repair, resupply and emergency command. But yes, Humans already had multiple ships larger than cruisers used for carrying fighters and bombers. Humans and Turians are the only mentioned races to use small craft bombers. Capable of dropping heavy ordinance inside PD envelopes and ME fields, or targeting small points with heavy weapons up close.
      Even the Geth just use their fighters in that role.

(as an aside i got to simply experience the patched ending as a noob!)
    i played anthem before a played the LE and at the time i didnt understand why bioware fans hated it so much, after playing the LE i COMPLETLY understand.

      It's to show that no victory is ever without sacrifice. Shepard was needed as a charismatic leader to unite the galaxy, but in order to save the galaxy from the existential threat that the Reapers pose, he is the only one that can make the choices that delivers us all from evil. He alone is the anomaly introduced into the crucible to present the opportunity for a new solution; like the Starchild says "none have ever come this far", but count on Shepard to be the one to make it and finally change things from how they have always been. Unless you pick the Refusal ending ofc, but that was just a fan-pressured joke of an ending anyway so it doesn't count.

    They should have switched the colors to keep with the Paragon is blue and Renegade is red theme. By this point and especially after the ME4 trailer everything is pointing towards Destroy as the canon making it the Paragon choice. Control is obviously the Renegade choice and should have been colored red because this option flat out makes Shepard vindicate the Illusive Man's actions, someone he/she knew full well was indoctrinated.

    • @Egobyte83
      @Egobyte83 ปีที่แล้ว +7

      Wrong. The whole idea here is that nothing is ever as black and white as it seems because none of the endings is without any form of sacrifice. "Destroy" is most certainly the Renegade ending because it has you wiping out all synthetic life despite being shown that indigenous species like the Geth deserves life on their own terms. "Synthesis" is touted as the best ending as it allows for synthetics and organics to reach a new level of understanding coupled with all the benefits of physically integrating synthetic frameworks into organic DNA, but I would argue that "Control" is the best and most Paragon ending despite being championed by the Illusive Man.
      You see, choosing "Control" does not mean that you agree with the Illusive Man. TIM wanted to use the reapers for humanity's benefits only, he would've used them to make humans the superior species of the galaxy. Shepard's intentions are quite different; if by nothing else, his actions throught the games (especially breaking with Cerberus in the end of ME2) informs you of that.
      Moreover, there are even subtle differences in Shepard's monologue in "Control" based on whether you went Paragon or Renegade throughout your playthroughs.
      If you have played mostly Renegade, the Shepard AI says things like, "I will give direction, provide a powerful leader and end the bickering of the many" and "I will lead an army that no one will dare oppose!", whereas if you go mostly Paragon, the Shepard AI says things like "To give the many hope for a future, to ensure that all have a voice in that future" and "I will rebuild what the many have lost, I will create a future with limitless possibilities. I will protect and sustain. I will act as guardian for the many".
      Plus, like I said, I personally view "Control" as the MOST Paragon ending because it saves the galaxy without committing mass genocide of synthetics while also keeping the status quo intact, i.e no one is forced to become a walking glowstick against their will; the only real change is Shepard dying, but that was the most fitting end to a character which affected so many on such a massive level anyway. And he doesn't even necessarily "die" either, but lives on as a supreme A.I god. I couldn't even think of a more epic ending than that.
      But the point is, it isn't all cut and dry. In the end, it doesn't matter what character originally sought what goals, because all endings are made viable and justified if you decide for them to be the definitive one for the very moral reasons that they could be seen as such.
      No ending is completely wrong, but no ending is completely in the right either.

      Ok (1) lol, that's wishful thinking. Synthetic life is synthetic life, regardless if it is living in a quarian suit or a geth platform, the geth even said so themselves; their bodies are just tools.
      (2) Nobody knew what the Crucible was going to do, it was a desperate hope that it would be a problem-solver, but they didn't know if it was a solution through destruction or anything else (which is what is left for you to decide), they mention it many times how they wonder how it is going to help them, some believe it's a weapon, but nobody knows for sure, they simply hope. Moreover, I am fairly certain that with their need for self-preservation, had the geth known beforehand that Shepard was going to use it to kill them too, they wouldn't have helped build it in the first place.
      (3) And about that, no geth was made privy to the information Shepard got from the Catalyst, Shepard was the only one there at the time.
      (4) And there it is, once again; the narrowminded intepretations of the choices. I already explained how it is NOT a black/white choice; failure for anyone else to understand it is not my problem.

    • @cjbladesworth8049
      @cjbladesworth8049 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      @@Egobyte83
      (1) It’s more than wishful thinking. The fact the Quarians are alive even after the Crucible goes off implies that their suits are still active, meaning the Geth in there are still alive. At low EMS the Crucible destroys all technology, but at High EMS we see that the damage is far more limited and controlled. Realistically if you create a Geth-Quarian alliance both parties are close enough that the Destroy ending would have to take them both out.
      But, we’ve seen if you had Tali as a love interest, Quarian suits are still functioning. You’re being pessimistic, which is fine, but basic observation says there’s a strong chance they’re fine just like Shepard was.
      (2) The Geth were connected to the Reapers, and Legion was able to steal and distribute information from them before his death. They definitely knew AT LEAST the crucible would destroy the reapers because that’s the base function that the reapers have shown they fear most time and time again.
      (3) No one was made privy period. I never said they were. But the star child outright lies to you anyways. The fact you’re treating Harbinger’s word as law is strange-.
      (4) it’s VERY. Black and white when it comes to Synthesis. Humans should have the right to deny their bodies being changed in a genetic level. It should be a choice. Shepard doesn’t have the right to play god.

But that's getting dangerously close to those deluded Indoctrination-theory people who wished for something that wasn't in the game to be real.
      (2) Here we go again with creative assumptions. Look, before I disassemble this, do you REALLY believe that a sentient race would just happily go along with building a doomsday weapon that they knew would specifically be used to destroy their own species all across the galaxy, even if it had been as a side effect? ... I mean, really?.. Don't you see the problem here..? Regardless, the fact is that the true geth have already shown that it was "evidently" acceptable for them even to deal with the reapers if it meant continued existance.
      (3) Lies? Why would they-.... oh, I get it now... yep, I knew I saw the pattern here. You're right buddy, I am sure there is some hidden agenda there. Bioware must have surely made this game for conspiracy theorists to pick apart. We weren't at all given what we got, it's a lie. All of it. 🙄
      (4) 🤦‍♂️ Boy, that bus just keeps running you over, eh?

    As cool as this scene is, that initial volley from the allied fleet probably triggered an extinction event on Earth. Every shot that missed would have hit the planet. Thousands of impacts, each with the force of a nuclear bomb.

      True. I think they said that earlier in the game (Palaven?) that the reapers put their back to the planet so that missed shots hit the planet.

      Earth was almost done at the point, missed shots probably killed more reapers and their zombies than actual humans.

    This reminded me a lot of the "sacrifice of Angels" epi of DS9

    The fact that Bioware spent years building a believable universe and then they put engine noise in deep space always bugs me

    The ending should say something liek "It took 11 year to clear the battle debris and bodies from circling earth's gravity." - would be a cool touch :D

    The biggest thing missing from mass effect 3 in LE wasn't the multiplayer, it was a fully fleshed out space battle scene here.
    Taking the time to animate all of fleets instead of the 4 we see here would have been amazing.
    Imagine a mass effect movie trilogy...
