This is the best ergonomic video I’ve seen on TH-cam! Never believe anyone that says 90 degrees anywhere. This guy did not he spoke about where your keyboard should be and how bad drawers are. Love this guy I subscribed to his channel let’s see what more he has to share but as an ergonomic and back care consultant for over 10 years this was a good starting point for most people. I give him a solid A as a grade on this video. I’m sure if it was longer and more detailed I would probably give this guy an A+ . For more information on the way to sit see the N.A.S.A. I have just discovered your channel. So far, I am really impressed with the content, delivery, and practical information that you teach. Keep up the good work. I think I can improve my posture based on your video, especially the foot rest. After one hour at the keyboard my legs hurt at the edge of the chair due to pressure. Thank you so much for putting this out there. I changed the way I was sitting at my desk and holy cow, my back feels better than it has in months. I want to cry! Thanks again!!
Yo, this is life-changing actually.. I leaned my chair back a little and it's way better & more chill. With it I had to bring my monitor closer so I can actually see stuff better on there (otherwise it'd be to much and too small) & the same with my keyboard, but all my nausea & headaches are gone (for now) + it feels better to be leaned back, instead of fully upright or even hinged over to the front (accidentally) after longer periods of time.. I kinda feel stupid now, not having thought about this for such a long time.. :D Damn.
Yup, I know exactly what you mean. Btw, now that you have your chairs height, seat, back, and arm rest adjusted economically for your height to an presumably fixed table height...not only moving your monitor closer but make sure the monitor height is correct. When you look straight (such that your head is not looking too far up or down) that your eyes are approximately 2"-3" down from the top of the monitor. This reduces neck strain. I've seen people who had their monitor so low that if they looked straight ahead they would see pass the top of the monitor. These people would be looking down at their monitor all day and pulling their neck muscles. Of course, then there are those who are looking up all day too. LOL

Thank you for the video. Let me share some points on ergonomics which I found out empirically in 20+yrs of work at the computer. I personally use it now and it helps a lot. 1. Use a standing desk always. And a bar stool with a medium -hard seat and spine. 2. Use a custom table with a round indent which helps you keep your elbows in a resting position. Or use elbow supports for both hands. This will save your wrists and your trapezium from permanent stress. 3. Do not use reclining chair because your head will intuitively try to keep an upright position which will stretch out your neck causing you osteoporosis issues. 4. 60-70cm from your eyes to the display not more or less. If less - you will become near-sighted, if further - you will stretch out your neck to see closer. And again have issues with neck vertebrae and muscles. 5. Use feet support for you bar stool, preferably with two height levels, so you can change leg position and relieve stress on leg, butt and lower spine. These points did cost me a lot, please at least consider using some of them.

My main issue with this, and something I've never been really able to figure out short of putting a keyboard on my lap, is that unlike you and I imagine most people, I have really long arms and my elbows stop just slightly above my waist. It's basically impossible for my arms not to be angled up even if my thighs are literally touching the bottom of a thin desk. Especially when leaning slightly back.
@@gradeA50 Yeah lol. The only real solution that I've found is a standing desk. Anything else requires a super custom solution. You could also try a leaning stool but most of those are designed to be used with a standing desk anyway.

The drawer desk problem is quite different as it doesn’t affect the distance between my arms and knees but makes the area where I sit more claustrophobic
Probably because this is based on what is comfortable and not following some rigid ergonomics "guidelines". Listen to your body. It will tell you if you are doing something incorrectly for a long time. Some people are just predisposed to getting back pains or other illnesses no matter what they do and should probably exercise more.
I like how this video makes point which are not found in any other video. This was probably made through some experience and professional-article reading than through watching all those copy-paste youtube videos
It is a clever note to emphasize that your desk height and your chair height are related. In the ideal position your arms are easily placed horizontally in your desk, while your feet are comfortable on the floor. But fixed standard desks may prevent us to seat properly. That's why standing desks are in high demand. Manhattan Office Design #OfficeFurniture #NYC
Love your videos David. I'm kinda OCD so your minimalist taste really appeals to me. Great editing, everything looks great and the info is clear and concise. Good luck with your channel, you've earned a sub here.
@0:55, I figured this out awhile back. My desk is way too high for me but I'm stuck with it for the time being. When I found out/realized that I should make my arms closer to 90 and it was causing me some aches and pains. This video is pretty fantastic overall. #5 is also one that's great because changing positions frequently is probably the thing that can make it the easiest to stay at a desk for a long time.

Thanks, excellent video. 👍 I have a used computer desk unit, paired with a desk riser, for any standing needs. As well as, a flat-pack writing desk for sitting and for work that needs an open desk. While sitting, I have a foot rocker, so I can fidget with my feet. ✌️&❤️
Impressed by your channel, very good work. Working in ergonomic chair with hand written text, I mean, writing in paper, is different and I can´t find any video about that!
What is your opinion on armrests? One might assume that using a chair without armrests would eventually make the person's neck or shoulders tired, or just cause general discomfort. On the other hand, the armrests might be too much in the way and be hitting the table constantly, which is also problematic.
Incorrect! Chairs without armrests will not make your neck & shoulders tired. As a matter of fact remove the armrest (if possible) or have it at the lowest setting to allow your elbows to float and naturally hanging by your side. If your elbow rests on the armrest in anyways such that it raises your shoulder the slightest bit means your shoulder/neck muscles are tightened. Overtime and under stressful work conditions, you'll have neck & shoulder problems. Then, like it says in #2, adjust your chairs height to the table and not to your legs/feet.
You have the keyboard too far away from you, therefore needing to hold up your arm and thus being "forced" to use some kind of palm support. _Not_ using a wrist rest, or however you call it, but having the keyboard closer to you, so that you do not need to stretch out and hold the forearm would solve this and be a much better long-term solution, but interestingly this simple and logic posture is seldom recommended.
You forgot to mention how much distance you need to maintain between the monitor and chair (I know it all depends on the size of the monitor and resolution) But there is some recommended distance so that your eyes don't strain over a long period of time!
I had spine surgery in 2011 and spent several months in therapy to even learn how to walk properly. Most of the stuff I learned was proper posture and stuff, but I remember the therapist was saying while sitting at a desk and stuff, more important part really was to not strain your back. To be frank, I do a super, super low lean at my work desk. It's an L-shape and both my elbows are actually on the desk with my wrist perfectly straight. When folks tell me to "straight myself up" or else I'll injure my back, I don't think they realize the opposite has a much higher chance of happening. Great video btw, I would love to learn how to edit videos like you but alas, it's merely a hobby for me.

you can develop a bad habit of leaning on one side, causing possible inflammation in elbow.. happened to me. plus sides are that it relieves pressure from neck/shoulders area and wrists/ fingers depending on your writing position. I'd say definitely use them, but be careful not to lean on them too much!
Standing is significantly "healthier" than sitting. Even if you feel like your "Standing still", your body is constantly micro adjusting so that you don't fall over. This micro adjustment helps keep blood moving, preventing clots from forming and allowing stabilizer muscles to be used.
Norio Takemoto When you sit, your muscles are supported by the chair, so they aren't used much and are inactive. That's why standing is healthier. When you stand, your muscles are still being used to hold you up.
I've got a standing desk, and I find I move around a lot when using it, especially if I'm listening to music. If I have my phone in my pocket, Google fit actually picks up quite a lot of steps while I'm standing at my desk. :)
I bought the cheapest Ikea standing desk and I love it. Just like you when I am listening to music while standing I can move about and do pelvis thrusts lol xD
I wish I had seen this video 3 months back. Now with a stationary posture of many hours a day I have screwed my back so badly that it pains everyday. I don't know if it will ever be normal again but guys just don't sit in the same posture all day and work. Life comes first before work, do a little walk every 20-30 mins, rest your shoulders on the chair don't bend forward, the typing position should be as shown in the video and screen should be straight , if you have a laptop then buy a wireless keyboard and mouse so that you don't need to adjust either arm or neck. A little investment can save your lifetime of money that you'll spend to recover from back pain...take this seriously and life will be less harder. Hope it helps.
my chair armrests dont fit under my desk so my keyb/mouse are too far away to be comfortable, and if i lower my chair its too low so my arms pinch the desk :/

1:28 look at his arms. How do people play like that? When I play I like to stretch out my hands and put my elbows on the table because it is more comfortable to me
This guys elbows are at least 5 inches from his lap. I've got long arms and a short torso, which means my elbows pretty much rest ON my thighs. This leaves no room for even a thin desk without shrugging to raise my elbows. Just realized these are the reasons I struggle SO MUCH with following all of these ergonomic instructional videos.
its because these are his opinions. and his recommendations are actually poor; and are against the recommendations of professional ergonomic reviewers.

I loved this video. Thank you! Just a feedback, ok?: You forgot to say in 3:32 that the correct is to stand after 40-50 minutes of work. So the person stands for 5 minutes (like get a glass of water, etc...), then the person is allowed to get back for more 40-50 minutes of work or study in computer. By the way, can I ask you a video about how to study with a correct posture? How do you make those lines at 0:05 or the (back, wrist rests, seat) names/pointers at 0:10? Any help would be appreciated!
I use after effects for the animations. Check out this for the call out animations. And the lines were a manual process.

Great, thank you!
2 point line and parent the ends to points tracked to the elbow and hip. repeat for all other areas
That's just great content! Thanks for sharing these tips David!
Shit, I've been doing all the right things without really paying attention to them.
姚鹤斌 same. I'm kinda creeped out
Probably because this is based on what is comfortable and not following some rigid ergonomics "guidelines".
Listen to your body. It will tell you if you are doing something incorrectly for a long time.
Some people are just predisposed to getting back pains or other illnesses no matter what they do and should probably exercise more.

Im too, now I have osteochondrosis and scoliosis. I wanna die.
I like how this video makes point which are not found in any other video. This was probably made through some experience and professional-article reading than through watching all those copy-paste youtube videos
Thank you for making this video. I was getting quite frustrated with trying to figure out how to adjust the height and about to ship my Ergorest back.
It is a clever note to emphasize that your desk height and your chair height are related. In the ideal position your arms are easily placed horizontally in your desk, while your feet are comfortable on the floor. But fixed standard desks may prevent us to seat properly. That's why standing desks are in high demand.

I am about to saw 3.5 inches off the legs of my ancient solid oak teachers desk to fix this (short dude here).
Love your videos David. I'm kinda OCD so your minimalist taste really appeals to me. Great editing, everything looks great and the info is clear and concise.
Good luck with your channel, you've earned a sub here.
Nice video. Are your arms by your sides? Or sticking out a bit? I can't tell from your video.
@0:55, I figured this out awhile back. My desk is way too high for me but I'm stuck with it for the time being. When I found out/realized that I should make my arms closer to 90 and it was causing me some aches and pains.
This video is pretty fantastic overall. #5 is also one that's great because changing positions frequently is probably the thing that can make it the easiest to stay at a desk for a long time.
what i did to solve this problem was to get an underdesk. because most chairs are not high enough.
i don't have a setup yet but when i am going to buy the new equipments for my setup i will definetly take care of these things thanks for shring good info this is the only yt cannel i like which doesen't shows you the fancy stuff but helpful in the long run.
Thanks for sharing good info

Thanks, excellent video. 👍 I have a used computer desk unit, paired with a desk riser, for any standing needs. As well as, a flat-pack writing desk for sitting and for work that needs an open desk. While sitting, I have a foot rocker, so I can fidget with my feet.

Thank you David so much for making this video :)
np! glad you like it
Impressed by your channel, very good work.
_Not_ using a wrist rest, or however you call it, but having the keyboard closer to you, so that you do not need to stretch out and hold the forearm would solve this and be a much better long-term solution, but interestingly this simple and logic posture is seldom recommended.
me sitting on a kitchen chair 👁🗨👄👁🗨
Where did you get your palm rest?
You forgot to mention how much distance you need to maintain between the monitor and chair (I know it all depends on the size of the monitor and resolution) But there is some recommended distance so that your eyes don't strain over a long period of time!
i guess that's subjective to the size of the screen?
@@nikolasb6007 yeah
What is the name of the chair in this video pls answer? (model, shopping link e.t.c)
Top Benefits of Buying Foot Rest Under Desk
Proper posture and a comfortable seating arrangement are critical when operating at a desk, yet many individuals are ignorant of how their seating choices influence their health. Sadly, discomfort in the spine, pelvis, and feet is all too prevalent among office workers. You may assist ease this pain and avoid future suffering by making a few easy changes. An under-foot desk rest is one such modification you may attempt. The advantages of an ergonomic footrest vary depending on who is using it, their body type, and any previous health concerns. Below are a few of the most prevalent advantages.

I HAVE NEVER SEEN AN ADJUSTABLE DESK!!! Will have to look into one of them!
No wonder I always have wrist and shoulder pain I’m doing everything wrong! Lol thank you so much for this video 👌
your production value is phenomenal
Is there a reason or any downside to having chair arms? I notice he didn’t have them on his chair.
you can develop a bad habit of leaning on one side, causing possible inflammation in elbow.. happened to me. plus sides are that it relieves pressure from neck/shoulders area and wrists/ fingers depending on your writing position. I'd say definitely use them, but be careful not to lean on them too much!
TheJociman thank you! I’ve been looking for this answer, I will try not to put too much pressure on them thanks
No. Arms are ok, he has reviews on chairs with arms. You just have to keep it aligned like showed in the video.
this really helped clear up quite also of misinformation I previously had
Standing is significantly "healthier" than sitting. Even if you feel like your "Standing still", your body is constantly micro adjusting so that you don't fall over. This micro adjustment helps keep blood moving, preventing clots from forming and allowing stabilizer muscles to be used.
Isn't the same true when you sit? You are not sitting still actually.
Norio Takemoto When you sit, your muscles are supported by the chair, so they aren't used much and are inactive. That's why standing is healthier. When you stand, your muscles are still being used to hold you up.
well actually, our body is'nt made for sitting on a chair... the more you stand, the better
Amazing video, to the point and very dense in information and visual examples. Thank you!
You probably have a weaker low back or a mild disc bulge. Consult with a physical medicine doctor, it helped me a lot.
Awesome job David
my chair armrests dont fit under my desk so my keyb/mouse are too far away to be comfortable, and if i lower my chair its too low so my arms pinch the desk :/
Abek saw that shit off. Maybe it can be unscrewed and dettached, have you checked it? If not, I would really take that shit off by "force". (oh, and english is not my main lang. but I think u got it)
unscrew the armrests
@Çerastes no, moron. The armrests on the chair are supposed to go under the desk.
@Çerastes no, fucking moron. The armrests go under the desk and your arms sit on the desk at a 90° angle.

I love the Office!
David, what is that chair in your video?
Hey David, which desk do you own? Where can we buy it?
IKEA
Really appreciate this! Most of my posture was correct except I've been consistently sitting straight up instead of reclining slightly.
You missed the most important thing i.e the monitor height
nothing like reams of paper cant fix
Agreed 😄

Your 5 inches tall???
Try ikea tyghe
I recommend the Autonomous Smart Desk 2, its around $400 dollars depending on the size and shape of the tabletop but is extremely high quality for the price.

1:28 *i can't setup it that way you are saying to. My chair has "hand-rests" on sides and it blocks me to go closer to the table. So i have to be lower so I can go closed to the table and my hand-rests are under the table. How to solve this? its so fucked*

Would love it if you could do an ergonomics setup where literally everything is adjustable, chair height, desk height, monitor height + standing ergonomics. Legit im sitting here with so many options I don't even know where to start, i guess my legs at 90 degrees and work from there?
Hi m8 :) I am about to do that kind of content and during weekend i'll gonna post how to improve ergonomics in home ... So feel free to check my vids :)

thank you man you deserve a million subscribers man, i bought the JÄRVFJÄLLET ikea chair much much better than my previous ak racing chair!! Not annoying at all, it's just amazing!
If i sit like lay back like you showed . I lose my aim .
I think people do know that although it is called a wrist rest, but it is not for your wrist, instead, it is designed for your edge of your palm so that when you are typing, your palm can match with the edge of the keyboard without hanging your hands on the edge of the keyboard.
Gonna have to cut out a big hole in the desk to fit my stomach for any of this to work...
or you could just try this

I loved this video. Thank you! Just a feedback, ok?: You forgot to say in 3:32 that the correct is to stand after 40-50 minutes of work. So the person stands for 5 minutes (like get a glass of water, etc...), then the person is allowed to get back for more 40-50 minutes of work or study in computer.
By the way, can I ask you a video about how to study with a correct posture? Sometimes I think that, the way we bend our neck/cervical spine to read books/printed articles, it can cause health problems and even herniated discs on our cervical spine!
