I was hype for BvS but that whole movie seemed like 3 movies with no real focus on any one storyline or plot thread , which ultimately hurt it in my opinion. Nevermind the poorly excuted Doomsday and Martha stuff. Dont get me wrong, Civil War is not a perfect movie, but it also had more to pull off than BvS. BvS is the second movie in its franchise, Civil War is not. Despite this, Civil War still managed to balance it's characters, build off of what we know, introduce new ideas and characters, and remain engaging. All while crafting a genuinely good story that fits the characters that have been presented to us, and gives them natural development without killing what we love about them. Which is something that really bothered me about BvS's characters. BvS is not a terrible movie, but Civil War is better in my opinion.
(Sorry for the long ass paragraph.😂)

One worked - Two didn't, and were a mess.
The one that worked was Snyder's original cut - now labelled "The Ultimate Cut".
Unfortunately WB's interference left people bitter. And here we are with them interefering even more with JL. Do they ever learn?
Civil War was insignificant. Both in terms of the movie and of the supposed "war" itself. It also ripped-off a Superman comic.

ScreenCrush BvS because in Civil War no one is really going for blood and it protrays Steve as the good guy trying to save the world and Tony as the bad guy. In BvS they show both sides as heroes and how Batman wants to kill superman since he can destroy the world without anyone being able to stop him.
Another things is how the results affect the Universe. Tony and Steve's fight didn't really do anything. By the end they're friends again, the other Avengers are freed, and the only one to really get hurt was Rhodey. At the end of BvS the Justice League is going to be formed, Steppenwolf is going to invade, Batman is no longer kill crazy, and Wonder Woman comes out of retirement.

Personally it hurt because they were part of the only force capable of successfully protecting regular humans from superhuman threats but, like typical fictional characters, they had no choice but to do what the bullshit script said: disagree over the demands of people that would have been enslaved or wiped out without them and make choices that led them into exchanging punches... No kidding, the whole superhero civil war story is so nonsensical in my book it even makes me say they deserved losing in Infinity War.

Bucky isn't a killing machine, the Winter Soldier is. So I totally understand Cap did what he thought was right and protected his friend, whom he couldn't save before. And of course the Accords never really worked either, so Tony ain't right about that one either. But Tony's reaction is completely justifiable as the person above said.

      @VictoriaTraducciones 6 ปีที่แล้ว +197

I agree with you but one correction, BvS isn't about two gods fighting each other, it's about a simple man/mortal fighting against a godlike being, they said it the trailer, Lex Luthor literally says it every five seconds in the movie, the whole "dark vs light, man vs god", so yeah, Batman is not a god or anything close to that by any means xD

We didn't exactly see Steve and Tony bonding as friends. All we saw was 2 guys feuding and always fighting each other. They barely tolerated one another until Tony finds out that Steve withheld information about Bucky killing his parents. From that point, whatever Steve and Tony had between them was thrown out the window.

    • @pocoloco753

I kind of agree with you. They never had a very clear and emotional friendship. Since the first Avengers movie Tony and Steve found themselves constantly disagreeing over aspects of the hero life, which were very important moments to make their showdown in Civil War believable and not forced. I think that their relantionship was more of a mutual respect thing between a living legend that embodies everything that is right and a self made iron man who's willing to do anything (even create a killer AI) to keep those close to him safe. They don't like each other very much, but their respect and admire their mutual qualities and good heart.

I do love how in civil war... Compared to the introductory movies of Iron Man and Captain America. You'd think Tony would be against the accords in civil war. Because he spent his whole second movie trying to keep the government from taking his suits. But no, he made it personal because of guilt for creating Ultron and the deaths that caused. You'd think Captain America being a veteran who understands the heirarchy of a military, and was the U.S. army mascot for a while, would back the accords. But because he witnessed Hydra corrupting not just the government but most of SHIELD. Yeah no... Governments can be corrupt. There is no more black-and-white good vs evil kind of thing.
But it's so much better when all that gets ditched out the window... Cause Tony and Cap had a make-up talk before the fight because Tony figured out the whole army of winter soldiers thing. And that led to one, emotional beatdown, for one simple reason... Tony realizes that Captain America's Best friend murdered his parents... And Cap knew about it but didn't tell him... Hell, Cap was straight up acting like he was taking the high ground the whole movie. Which I bet added more fuel to that fire.

Leaving the accords aside for awhile and referring to the Bucky, Cap & Tony fight - Steve finds out about Bucky and his lengthy history in The Winter Solider, so between then and Age of Ultron Steve could've told Tony, yeah I'm sure he would be angry but at the time Cap didn't know where Bucky was giving Tony some time to actually grieve deal with the pain and possibly heal and move on, but with the direction Cap took Tony felt betrayed he found out about all of this at the same time, I know I would also like to kill the person who killed my parents but Cap also joining the fight was terrible. all in all I'm rambling and can't pick a side but I think they all contributed to the divide and took things too far. In the DCEU, I always say Batman, Superman, the Flash, Aquaman. That’s how familiar and relatable the MCU superheros are, because the MCU took time and made me very familiar with these characters. They didn’t just come out with an Iron Man movie and then have him go against Captain America two years later in another movie without any reason to (in my opinion). And then not introduce the other heroes properly (besides Wonder Woman). The MCU is a prime of example of patience leading to success

There is no indication throughout the movie that Bucky is unwilling to own up to or apologize for killing Tony's parents. His core conflict in the film is explicitly his desire to prevent the winter soldier from claiming anymore victims. He literally asks Steve if he's even worth saving. The tragedy of civil war is that NOBODY has the clear moral high ground. Is it fair for Tony to seek vengeance against somebody who had no choice in their actions? Was it ok for Steve to hide the truth? Should Bucky have just lied down and died? Was Zimo justified in being angry after his wife and child were killed by a murder bot Tony created? Should the Avengers be allowed to be autonomous? Pretty much the only character who makes a decision that could be considered clearly moral was Tchala choosing to spare zimo in the end and helping Bucky undo the brainwashing and that's only if you agree that Bucky shouldn't be punished for winter soldiering

genovaz you do realise if steve hadn’t have held the info that his parents were murdered tony would have had ample time to regather and heal and process before the timeline of events in the movie. Instead he finds out
      1) Bucky killed his parents
      2) steve knew they were murdered and withheld the info
      3) he is unable to unleash his anger or sadness at all in a constructive way
On the flip side you have Bucky, who
      1) also kept secrets from tony and made no attempt to fix himself instead went into hiding.
      2) had protection from Steve
      3) him and Steve made no attempt to restrain him and instead let a fight happen despite caps ability to outmanoeuvr and deescelate a fight in seconds

Whenever someone asked me if I preferred DC or Marvel, I would always say DC. I loved Batman, Wonder Woman and the Flash. And then I started watching Marvel movies and I grew so attached to characters like Tony, Nat, Steve, Peter, Bucky etc., because of the development that is shown throughout the movies, the emotion, and the humanity of these characters. They go through wars, both mentally and physically, and they don’t leave unscathed. They form PTSD, anxiety, depression, and insecurity, and not everybody lives. Favorite characters die protecting their world and this made me cry more than DC ever did(I can’t recall DC making me cry).

honestly, this is because the MCU made solo films to make audiences familiar with each avenger and made them all likeable. you get to sympathise with tony and steve, understand their relationships - who do they love, what are their values, what shaped them into the hero they are today?
and then they oppose the two in civil war, and it works because the audience already knows who tony and steve are and you're either loyally rooting for someone, or you're devastated by being in-between.
for cap fans, we know how much steve mistrusts organisations because of the events of TWS, we know how much bucky means to him because we saw his entire life get taken from him when he was frozen in ice. so when tony tries to kill bucky and opposes the accords, we root for him and the desperation he has to protect the one person left in his life who knew him as steve and not captain america.
for ironman fans, we know how much the death of his parents affected him, and how much stress tony has experienced - from pepper leaving him, to the whole ultron mess, were informed of his stance on the accords. so when steve protects bucky and lies to tony, we sympathise with tony's pain of seeing his parents die and we understand why its important for him to sign the accords.
this audience attachment to the characters is what makes the MCU so great - its less about watching action and looking at epic battles like in BvS, but more about seeing our favourite superheroes experience human emotions and rooting for them. tony and steve's final battle is less about morality or the badass one-uppance of two strong forces, its about an emotional conflict informed by 2 fleshed-out characters and the collision of their stories.

Well put. Batman will always be my favourite superhero, but honestly DC has been shitting the bed so hard these days, even in their animated movies. Gotham By Gaslight was cool, but BvS, Killing Joke, Suicide Squad, Justice League vs Teen Titans, Wonder Woman, etc. have all been awful or just okay.
I love the characters in the MCU. Who expected everyone to prefer the Guardians of the Galaxy and Ant-Man over Batman and Superman? That shouldn't be possible, but it is, because of how good the writing and characterization is. And I don't even like Ant-Man, but he's a lot better than what DC is offering these days!

  • @jackychen6261

The big difference is simply: we as an audience knew and understood Steve and Tony and their choice which led to their battle and conflict. In BvS we see a Batman no one can relate to (dude kills people and uses guns like a nornal thug) and a Superman we only saw a glimpse of fight for the sake of “because we can fight”. It is senseless, its unrelatable and just plain stupid.

One, the main movie stablishes everything: HE was 20 years as Batman, he lose a Robin, he got depressed and hateful basically.
Two, BvS is not a Civil War movie, it’s a Dawn of Justice movie (a prologue and setting the bases for the crossover Justice League) so it’s obvious that we could get spin offs (Aquaman was a sequel for Justice League, Wonder Woman a prequel, Shazam is set after JL, Suicide Squad is also a direct follow up of BvS and we have Batman and Flash cameos and their villains)
Three, it’s NOt a physical fight, it’s a God vs Man story

Right? In Civil War, we're torn between Steve and Tony.
Steve: Do whatever you can to help, but sometimes you can't save everyone. The government shouldn't control them because the government is made of "people with agendas, and agendas change". Bucky was brainwashed, abused, and forced to kill by Hydra and deserves protection
Tony: The damage caused by superheroes needs to stop. The government needs to regulate them to ensure civilian safety. Bucky killed his mother (and father, but we all know Tony was closer to Maria).
We empathize with both, like T'Challa and Natasha do. Seeing them fight is heartbreaking and it tears you apart, because both sides have a very good point (personally, I'm team Cap).

That's not the issue. When you make a 3-hour movie that has to gloss over key character moments (Like the Hulk finally facing his angry side and accepting it) for the sake of cramming in more fat jokes, the movie does not work.
When you have a character like Cap LIE to Peggy about who he is and let everything bad in the alternative universe happen anyways, the movie does not work.

Nope just nope, civil war knows what it’s talking about, and the fact they make the winter soldier a big thing doesn’t bother me cuz I watch the whole captain America trilogy, and their friendship is very deep that make the final fight in civil war personal which is great, and the accord that made the hero’s think which is right which is wrong, in the other hand BVS had no clue what it’s trying to say, first I gotta say I like BVS but it got many serious issues, first, they tried too hard to put many stuffs into it to set up the future dceu which are unnecessary and kinda drag the film, second, they never truly focus on the Batman and Superman’s perspective, is Superman a god that’s trustworthy? Do we need him? Many philosophical topics in it but they never truly discover it, people said audiences hate dceu because it’s too dark and have deep meaning and mcu are just dumb fun, NO, dceu did have some deep meaning but they never care about talking about it, meanwhile mcu got deep meaning behind those heroes’ character development 🤷‍♂️

Civil war was a movie about established characters who are working together as a team finding themselves fighting on different sides of a war because their ideologies were conflicting and stuff turned so bad that fighting became their only way out.
BvS was a movie 2 guys with pretty much no relationship with each other fighting over their ideology and at the same time was supposed to set up a future movie in which they would team up with other guys who all got some cameo appearance in this movie.

It's not on screen. I was like wtf steve knew? He's a villain with a crap plan. Why couldn't bucky cover his ears and say "I'm not listening to you" over and over again. Like Tony lost his parents and was kept hidden about the actual reason of their death by someone whom he considered a friend. Not to mention that friend was doing every thing he could to protect the killer of his parents. As for Steve, he finally found someone from his old life. He lost the love of his life but had a chance to save his best friend. Had he told Tony the actual truth, do y'all really think Tony would've acted rational and helped save The Winter Soldier? Would Tony have understood at that point that The Winter Soldier did not have a choice?

Marvel had sold most of their movie rights and was almost to the point of bankruptcy. They go all in on Iron Man with Easter eggs setting up their idea, we bite, they masterfully concoct and execute a decade long (but not super-detailed, leaving room for organic growth and social/cultural changes) plan never before done in the history of filmmaking: a shared movie universe.
They give every hero (except Black Widow and Hawkeye) their own standalone origin movie before any interaction with a larger ensemble teamup movie, PLUS two follow-up movies which gives the character plenty of time to develop and the audience plenty of time to get not just interested but attached.
DC/WarnerBros: Decides to do a another superman movie (just had one a couple years prior), perhaps even a trilogy. *Oh shit, look what Marvel is doing!* then *HOLY SHIT! LOOK HOW MUCH MONEY THEY'RE MAKING!* Decides to use Man of Steel to shoehorn in their own version of a cinematic universe to capitalize on Marvel's success. Creates BVS, it flops and creates millions of memes. Creates Wonder Woman, it does well.
Creates Justice League, it flops and creates a few memes.
Back at Marvel: Hey Wonder Woman did really well, let's take the hint and start doing female left movies. Succeeds even more.

Main problem is that Disney thinks R movies are risky and rarely do it, so they don't typically greenlight them, but with them closing a deal on 20th Century Fox, Marvel could distribute R movies through there so technically Disney doesn't need to distribute them. I mean certainly Deadpool solo movies would remain R rated, can you imagine the backlash of Deadpool 3 being PG-13. People would be furious and most likely the lead Ryan Reynolds. So there is a common misconception about Civil War that really matters and makes me land squarely on Tony’s side:
Tony was not asking the government to make decision for him like a juvenile delinquent. He wanted accountability but independence - he says to Steve that he would use his influence and the Avengers’s influence to amend the accords - all he wants to do is avoid clashing with world governments and maintain accountability.
Cap almost agrees to this until he lashes out emotionally after hearing Wanda is being protected at the Avengers compound - which makes no logical sense. He liked Tony’s proposal but then let emotion of an unrelated small issue change his mind.
Just an added bit that is there in the movie but often overlooked.

    • @parry111
      @parry111 3 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Here's the things you overlooked:
Iron man wanted accountability, at the price of their freedom. Cap specifically brings this point up by saying what if the government doesn't allow them to deploy for missions that they need to be on. Tony never wanted accountability, he was under guilt and pressure after he realised just how many people had indirectly died because of his creation, and wanted a higher power to look over them. The whole wanda incident only pushes cap over the edge, he was never on board with the accords at the first place

The save martha scene would have been so much better if he had said “save my mother”
It wouldnt really have been meme able like it was and
It would have shown what the director was trying to do so much better
Batman saw superman as a monster
    Monsters do not have mothers
When he realizes he has a mother
He has to deal with the fact he is dealing with a person and not a monster
But using “martha” just ruined it and made it too cringy

aliens have alien mother's. but probably not one called martha like batmans mother that Clark could never have known about ya see where im going. Superman is not dumb but majority of audience seem to think so. He chose those words carefuly plus that fight was a bloodlust batman vs a barely trying superman. lex wanted superman dead and didnt realise batman stole the kryptonite for that very purpose and his mistake was literally kidnapping supermans mother. he was behind literally everything from the beginning orchestrating.
also if you think about it batman alter ego billionaire playboy.
superman is a mild mannered reporter clark kent
lex also has an alter ego a bumbling seemingly harmless buffoon. no one literally suspected him till it was too late but watch the movie again the darkness was there.

Civil War was completely bland and forgettable. However, four years after its release, people are still debating BvS. More and more viewers are discovering things about it and attitudes towards the film are becoming quite positive. Sometimes it takes time to appreciate something great, whereas fast food like CW is quickly forgotten.

  •  3 ปีที่แล้ว +2

The problem that I have with BvS is that film never grasped one story line it try to do way too much with so little and to top it off cram so many different stories that have no weight because nothing has been setup yet in previous films. What Civil War does so amazingly well is that it never feels like they were trying to do too much with too little is the exact opposite effect, they did very little with so much convolution from previous stories rolling into Civil War and still managed to introduce two characters into the story without feeling forced. They were focused, concise, and to top it all off it had one main story line and not thirty of them. With that out of the way. People want blood in Civil War the problem with this mentality is that Civil War is the middle chapter in the middle of this huge story being told. Story within a story and the fall of the Avengers has severe consequences because eventually it leads to entire universe feeling the effects of Thanos. Killing a main Avenger or even a character that doesn't matter will have no weight in the third act of the giant story ie, Infinity War, Endgame. The argument could be made that it made the team hold back from creating something with deadlier consequences but the consequence at the end of the Civil War is that when you don't talk with each other you let emotions run high it cause a much bigger problem which is the death of the team... When Jimmy dies,I felt nothing, when superman died,I felt nothing. When Lois was in danger I didn't feel anything because these characters intersect so little in previous films and or BvS also does a terrible job in setting it all up to begin with. When the Cap buried the shield in the Arc reactor you immediately feel the weight of the break of all those years working together and being like brothers. At the end they are not friends and the Cap is on the run. The extension of the olive branch was just the Cap being cathartic not for Tony but for himself and with this he makes peace with his choices of the past.

It's meant for the general public, not just comic fans. If you have to be so completely immersed in the source material and films that you can find excuses for obvious flaws, so that the average viewer won't like the movie, wouldn't that be considered a failure in filmmaking? I just feel like there's no real way to defend BvS besides, "yeah, it's not a good movie, but the characters mean a lot to me and I personally enjoyed it."

"marvel characters don't take themselves seriously so when something serious does happen it's effective." This is exactly why I think people are wrong to criticize the mcu's comedy. I've only cried during two mcu films, Groot's death and Yondu's death, and those two scenes came in the most comedy of comedies the MCU has ever comedied.

    • @pittland44
      @pittland44 6 ปีที่แล้ว +39

I cried at both moments as well. That having been said, there's a reason why Marvel has them crack jokes throughout the movie, it helps circumvent the suspension of disbelief, and the Martha scene shows the problem with taking things too seriously. Because the Marvel movies are never 100% serious we never 100% start to treat it like it's real, as such we can circumvent our natural predilection to detect things that are fake and instead focus on watching the movie. Because BVS tries to take everything as seriously as possible you start to notice things and ask questions, both about physical matters (how much does Superman weight for example) and intellectual ones (what was Lex's plan once Doomsday killed Superman). Because you don't take a Marvel movie 100% seriously you don't start nitpicking and you don't come to the realization that Captain America is literally walking around in an American Flag suit throwing a magical boomerang shield or that Thor is a space Viking with a magic hammer. BVS fails because they're trying to force you to take things seriously (hence the score thundering in your ears that all of this is important) whereas the MCU wants you to not take things 100% seriously and allow yourself to enjoy the show.

To everyone saying Zemo's plan wasn't consistent, here's a breakdown.
    1. Zemo was trying to find the security tape that would pit Iron Man against Bucky and thus against Cap, breaking bonds etc. However only 2 people had intel on where the location which had the tape was; Bucky and the Hydra agent he interrogates. The agent refuses to talk so his only choice is Bucky. The problem is that Buck had been in hiding for 2 years. So how do you make someone in hiding come out? You make them a wanted man. *Insert the UN bombing here*. Then he pretty much lets the government capture Buck for him so he can put him under that mind control shit from the Soviets (the words he says while Bucky tries to break out) and then Zemo gets the info he needed and makes his way to Siberia to retrieve the tape.

Well I like both DC and marvel. I’m a huge Superman fan I went into the movie really hoping it would be good so I wouldn’t say I’m biased.

@@TheExecutioner21 Always been a huge DC fan and enjoyed the hell out of Batman v Superman. But it's not close to Civil War. They shouldn't even be discussed in the same sentence.

BvS was amazing, I did enjoy it more the Civil War, but I do hold Civil War as the 3rd best MCU movie.

So basically to summarize the entire video, one has world building the other just goes straight to the point.

The basic summary of why one is better than the other is simple: Civil War had a point. Batman v Superman didn't.
Civil War knew what it was about. Accountability vs freedom.
Batman v Superman was about... hey guys we have a ton of big brand names let's cram them all into a movie
It had no point. There was no reason for Batman and superman to fight, as you pointed out. Superman forgot he had superpowers. Then he forgot his mom's in danger. Then he forgets he has superpowers again. Then Batman forgets his own reason for hunting down Superman ("IF THERE IS EVEN A 1% CHANCE...")
Oh well his mom's name is the same as mine that means there's 0% chance now, earth is perfectly safe yay. Oh and don't forget to pause and watch 4 trailers crammed into the middle of the climax, thanks.

lol. Where the hell did I say Civil War was some masterpiece? It's a movie that has a story that makes sense. BvS is a steaming pile of shit, somewhere on the level of the Twilight series with a bigger budget.

      what's so hard to understand?
Avengers didn't blow up the city, aliens did. Avengers stopped the aliens.
Superman DID blow up the city. End of story.
if that confuses you, I can see why a simple story Civil War was so difficult for you to comprehend.

No, it was Zod and his world engine that blew up the city, NOT Superman. Furthermore, Superman stopped them both from causing further destruction.

loudboy317 Look at MoS and I swear to my life that there are a bunch of scenes where Superman slams and grabs and launches Zod into buildings.
