Dude who just randomly died there at the end probably died to the static/move list. Theres a section of the stages memory dedicated to moving triangles and if the game has more moving triangles than it's supposed to in the move list it will cause invisible walls like that.
tricky triangles beyond our comprehension
@@AverageTreyVG Amazing reference. LOL
awesome that both sm64 and sms have magic invisible collision bugs that kill you
(i say this with great appreciation for both games by the way)
@@jummy0 And even though both are caused by completely different things, they're both still annoying as hell.
By the way, for anyone wondering what causes it in SM64, essentially, ceilings extend upwards as walls until they reach a floor, where they stop. However, due to mistakes in the level geometry, some ceilings never hit a floor even though they're supposed to, which results in an invisible wall that extends to the top of the level.
This video was made in one take, even with all the bloopers.
Ok, that one was good
I see everyone is learning from my previous pun.
Nice one.
That got a good chuckle out of me, I gotta admit.
Hahahaha that’s good.
Seeing Todd Rogers made me wish he did Sunshine speedruns. He'd probably figure out a way to use the Z Button to start the Blooper in second gear.
He would sue the clock for ticking down.
I can not express how mad I am for showing the power of invisible forces beyond our comprehension , and then not even explaining it for my comprehension! Well played, banger vid as always.
His cruelty knows no bounds.
well it wouldn't be beyond our comprehension if it were explained for our comprehension
Well according to another comment by epicwade6346 it was due to every stage having a piece of memory dedicated to moving triangles and if there are more at a particular moment then there are supposed to be according to that part of the memory then for as long as that is the case it will cause the appearance invisible walls.
When you brought up the Z button, degeneracy, and it being banned, I was expecting you to say that if you continuously mash Z, the timer never counts down. Glad I was wrong lol
i remember thinking of a hypothetical glitch like this, where pausing stops the timer, but since the timer didn't go down it resets back to the beginning of the second, so if you keep pausing it never goes down.
@@MadContendery Reminds me of Pikmin 2
There's a Hour:Minute timer displayed on the Ship's Log (save file) screen, showing how much of your life you've spent spamming purple creatures onto other, hostile creatures (AKA playing Pikmin 2)
However, it only saves down to the minute, meaning if you play for 59 seconds, save, and then reset to the title screen to clear the playtime timer, it won't count up at all
So, if you strategize and spend no longer than ~59 seconds (A little shorter thanks to animations and screen transitions) on a cave floor (Or just in general an area but you can't stop and resume during a day in Pikmin 2 unless you go into a cave), you can pay off the debt with only 1 minute to you and your save file's name
(A video going in-depth into this is called "Pikmin 2: Resuming Your Expedition in 0 Minutes (in Theory)")
You know, I've never played SMS. Nit even casually. Usually, I don't care about speedrun tech videos for games I don't play, but AverageTrey is the exception. These videos are the best.
It helps that the editing is fun as well as SMS having a really addictive color palette, especially if you like the tropical environment.
I’m in the same boat - played less than 1hr of this game total irl but I love Avg Trey’s SMS vids
Have you seen the 120 Shine TAS?@@kurtie6794
Man, I was just about to get it back... Honestly there's not much to improve after the timer starts, the double-coin jumps are pretty tight so the only place you can really go wrong without missing a coin altogether is the angle of the jump into the sub coin. But going back to the roots of red button storage, _it's always possible to start closer to the coins..._ (at the cost of 2 whole minutes per attempt (I hate my life (but I deserve it)))
Also I've been doing Arle's helipad strat in any% and even 120 for a few years now, it's pretty easy with the right setup! Can't say it hasn't killed a few runs, but I just don't like having to line up for the submarine after the normal strat
Thank you for your discoveries as it means more videos from Trey 😂
Can you stop being the biggest problem causer in the community for one day? But seriously, we love you, the cool shit you find never gets old.
16:30 you know I was wondering why you were suddenly playing Puyo Puyo music, and then it's immediately revealed that it was Arle Nadja herself holding a record. Amazing.
Aww darn, I came down to the comments to check for this very comment, since I wanted to be the special one to notice the connection, but I am glad nonetheless to see that I am not alone. :D
I guess now we know what Arle does in her free time when she's not fighting with Puyos. She's a Mario Sunshine speedrunner.
And he didn't even pronounce her name right! (The e is silent)
Really cool to be a big part of this one, the competition with Noki Doki this past month was awesome! Thanks for making this video, great work as always!
🙏
@@itsbrd2494 while this is true, jcool is also just an outright incredibly skilled gamer. afaik there is no evidence of cheating outside of monkey ball ILing, but having a dash of skepticism is more than fair.
I gotta tell you, I really hope you don’t stop posting. There’s something special about each video you share that just makes me want to dive back into Sunshine. Seriously, your content is awesome and it means a lot to me. Please keep it up!
Oh, those cheeky invisible forces beyond our comprehension!
4:14 Is that the sound of a GBA archer pulling back their bow I hear? Truly, an inspired auditory choice.
Jokes aside, your editing has really kicked up a notch these last two videos. Was a super enjoyable watch, dude.
Yuuup, I get some of my sfx inspiration from choopi lol. Also thank you!!

@@AverageTreyVG Does that include the Phantom Ruby sound?
Yeah seriously
Your editing only continues to amaze
That last bit about the bloopers happened to Ryan in his run of the game on BrainScratch Commentaries. It was easily one of the funniest deaths in the game. XD
The hit box on the bloopers probably explains why I was so bad at the red coins on the water star
That new turbo nozzle route is absolutely sick and just kept getting cooler
God i love learning more about this game. Easily my favorite mario
Love the video, but I think it would have been nice if you explained what the glitch does instead of just showing a montage when revealing it. As someone unfamiliar with it, I couldn't confidently piece together what the purpose is
agree here, i have no idea what the significance of this trick is haha
It allows you to start the timer "anywhere" rather than where the red button is, so you can basically cut out the journey between the button and getting the first red coin.
("anywhere" as long as you can get to that place from the button without touching the ground, since touching the ground makes the text/timer start)
I absolutely love these videos. Your AGDQ run (2014 i believe) was the reason i started engaging in SM Sunshine soeedeuns at all. Sunshine is one of my favorite mario games, and seeing the way you did 120 shines was just so masterful, it gave me a whole new appreciation for the game.
I didn't continue speedrunning much. I struggled with Yoshi skip and Sirenna Beach skip, but i still always held a deep respect for those who could do it.
Your new wave of content is amazing. Keep up the great work!
Really nice editing, and honestly the usage of Madou Monogatari music for Arle Nadja was really fitting.
The first video of yours that I saw was on the MKDD time trials rankings. I decided to submit my times and since the last few months, I have climbed from 850+ to what will be top 300 by next week. Recently I’ve been watching a bunch of your SMS videos, even though I’ve never even played the game. You’ve intrigued me, so hopefully I’ll get my hands upon it soon!
As someone who competed with packattack in red coin ILs back in the day, this really brings back memories :) And it feels like wizardry how much the tech in that game has improved. Thank you for these great videos, Trey!
Slowing down the red coin sound here, it makes it sound very similar to the race/timer music that would be playing while you are collecting red coins. 13:43
Would love to see you tackle the episode 7s. The way that speedrunners have killed shadow Mario has changed a lot and I can’t find much about the current fastest method of quick killing with the like one shot instant kill that runners do. Loved this vid Trey! Appreciate you giving us this content on the best game ever.
Oh yeah, more Sunshine content. Love it.
Keep it coming as I need my fix
Babe, wake up!
New Trey Sunshine video just dropped!
I can't tell you how much I appreciate you making an audio edit! I listen to video essays like this while I'm working, so I never see edits that were brought up with only text.
The creativity of explanations, the top-shelf references and razor-sharp wit, The so-smooth-I-can't-believe-it's-not-butter pacing... Genuinely, it is a privilege to be able to watch your videos. Thank you!
Cannot describe how much I love this series, Sunshine is one of my all-time favourite games and these videos help me learn about the thriving community and super niche aspects of it without becoming intimidated or overwhelmed, super accessible and enjoyable videos and I can't wait to see more :)
Your content has been leveling up Trey! I love SMS but never watched any content on it until your WR progression videos. Been really cool watching your content grow.
I love these Sunshine glitch/speedrun history videos so much. I love learning more about this game, and your videos are the best. Keep it up!
I'd love to see a video on Sand Bird, Watermelon Festival/Gelato Beach Skip, Secret of the Village Underside, different strats for Goopy Inferno... or maybe something on the growing romhacking community for Sunshine, with Sunburn, Eclipse, Arcade, etc. There are so many amazing ones out there now, when just a few years ago there was hardly anything.
3:35 this is the perfect music choice for making little progress over a very long time
if you've played Xenoblade 2, you should know
WE ARE... URSULA'S NEW GROOVE!
4:54 The RBA joke got a good, hearty chuckle out of me.
I was just rewatching some of your older videos wishing you were uploading more, good timing! 🎉 Your videos are some of the best in speedrun tech explained
Seriously impressive if you edit your own videos trey. You truly are a talented human
Banger video as usual, love the trivia and the editing.
I live for your Sunshine videos! Please keep making them, I love all the strange aspects of this game and how you explain them!
15:14 I was not ready for that pure and genuine rage. excellent video sir
The editing is on point like always! Fantastic video Trey 🙏
Another great video from Trey! Please keep it up, it always makes my day to learn about these niche topics about games I have endless nostalgia for!
Your videos are fantastic. Always look forward to your uploads.
I haven't followed the SMS community since 2015. Great to see you consistently posting content catching me up after all these years :D
Was watching through your videos all of yesterday! Glad there's a new average video
SMS was one of the first games i ever played as a kid, and some how there is always more to learn. Thanks for your ever entertaining videos Trey!
Man your videos are always a joy to watch, please keep on
Another day another AverageTrey video?? It’s a great day.
Absolutely love the deep dive into the history of these levels and strats. Thanks for all you do!
all of my neurons immediately activated when i heard kayava
Getting hit with the XC2 merc mission menu theme when showing the Rico 6 WR graoh over time made me feel like those memes of characters floating through space with headphones on
The Z-button pausing was pretty useful when I did a one-handed any% race once :3
absolutely love the editing in these videos, this is why i have notifications on 👌
This editing is superb. Great stuff! Always love to see Mario Sunshine content on my timeline.
Awesome vid, love the exaggerated humor segments towards the end! Keep up the awesome work Trey!
Great video!! Amazing level of editing and fun info
great video dude! I live in Minnesota, I think that's why I love Super Mario Sunshine so much. It's a warm game (in multiple ways, I suppose)
Your videos are always a treat man
Really enjoyed the editing in this, y’all are damn funny as well as informative
I'm ready for Trey's channel to pop off any day now, these videos are so good.
great video, i loved this game back in the day and seeing these sorts of tricks is wild.
Please talk about that weird grass level in Delfino. Or maybe Pachinko
I can’t wait in a far distant year when there’s a breakdown like this for every level, and I can watch a playlist in order with all of them
Never realize how massively disproportionate Mario is until I saw a regular human sitting next to him. Or maybe regular humans are the massively disproportionate ones? One of life’s great mysteries.
Always super excited to see Rain World music in unrelated places. Oh and uh, nice video too.
i caught that ITYSL reference with the "has this ever happened to you?" bit, based trey
Im actually super impressed at that blooperless run! Like wow!
Such a quality creator for such a random niche I love TH-cam
Loved the use of the Merc group theme from Xenoblade Chronicles 2. Your editing has been sharp and smooth. Great video man.
Not the Ursula's New Groove theme
4:56 hey, you've even got bottle on B!
New SMS speedrunning video lessgoo! I find it really cool to see videos covering about world records that are RECENTLY happeneing lol. Love to see this game still having some breakthroughs to this day
I always love the way you use sound in your videos like having the red coin get sounds over a super old video and everything
This niche of explaining speedrun strats is my favorite kind of video, keep it up
1:15 Oh boy I can't wait to learn about-
THAT'S STAR FOX ASSAULT OST! TREY YOU MAGNIFICENT PERSON! Please continue to remind people that this fantastic game exists!
Gorgeous. It's amazing knowing how much work went into this, especially all the god dang amendments that all happened to pop up right as you were making the video in the first place...
Love the editing magic as always, especially Good Ol' Bloopy, and I hope you're doing well in the Maximum Degeneracy Prison.
My personal suggestion continues to be the Delfino Hidden Stage with the weird grass that looks like they were rushed for shines and just ported a test level or something. Profoundly bizarre stage.
you are the face of sunshine please keeping these type of vids they are so good
This is the best video ever thank you
would love a video about that stupid ass tall grass level that 99% of people who played the game dont even know exists
Average Trey is the GOAT of literally everything, but especially niche and interesting SMS video essays
great as always, your videos are top notch
Let’s go, I was just rewatching your older stuff.
loved that you included wind waker and animal crossing music !
Great video, I hope I enjoyed watching it as much as you enjoyed writing it
Ngl, my mind was blown when you told me the goal of "red coins on the water" was to collect red coins...
... on the water.
Your editing is amazing
The editing in these videos has such a good flow
The duck ring rider pianta when Sunshine players start using him to get off of bloopers: 😟
i loved this video so much
10/10
amazing content as always trey! superb
Trey can make a 10 hour video talking about the most random things in sunshine possible and I wouldnt get bored. Masterclass editing
Incredible video. I could learn about Sunshine all day, and you're naturally hilarious.
I wonder if the Blooper red coins "button head start" glitch will get banned like on the rest of the missions, since it now uses a big setup.
Very good job at explaining the inputs! I wish I could pause and replay events in real conversation like when you showed the y button storage in the turbo nozzle route breakdown
While I do prefer your videos to be well over an hour the latest ones have been astoundingly entertaining.
4:40 IIRC the engine Nintendo uses doesn't support rotating collision, something obvious in OoT Master Quest, which is why Mario was made shorter in Galaxy.
"New AverageTrey video", i shouted out loud in awe, while checking my subscriptions. Today was a good day.
i immediately recognized the Rain World OST usage, great taste
I've come to love how broken this game is rather than disliking it :) Another banger from AverageTreyVG

Speedrun History Videos + "Then, (Runner) achieved this run. . ."
Name a better duo
your editing is great
Babe wake up AverageTrey just posted another SMS video
The script and style are so good, I had to subscribe.
this sort of recent run of vids from you have been very good
Dammit trey you always manage to inform me and make me laugh with these videos, i love them so much
