@Ivytheherbert I never understood the hate for blue coins. If people don't like them they should not do them but I think it adds way more for players who want to actually explore the level instead of just going wherever the next shrine is.
If you’re making more of these, you gotta talk about the tall grass red coin secret stage. First of all, it’s entrance is so out of the way that many of my friends I’ve talked to didn’t even know it existed. Then once you get there, it looks so strange and unfinished, unlike anything else in the game. I almost feel like it was a beta level the devs threw in last minute when they were really struggling to fit 120 shines, and they hid it away hoping nobody would find it.
on my 2012-2015 era dolphin emu setups, this level would tank the framerate to like 5 FPS i think because of all the grass. its memory is forever cursed in my brain cause of this
Even getting to the pipe itself there is weird considering you can't wall kick off of the wall in the "earlier" versions of Delfino Plaza, only the later ones.
I think that it was thrown together last minute holds weight because in the Japanese version it IS unfinished. There is no shine location there in the event 100 coins is collected, but it exists everywhere else. In every other release, the shine location exists. If you collect 100 coins in that location on Jp, the game will just crash
I saw this comment before watching and was like “wdym his editing already kicks ass, how much better did he even need to make it” and swiftly proceeded to see the error of my ways and crimes
You know that one secret in Delfino Plaza that’s up in a cliff pipe past the entrance to Pinna Park? I wanna see someone talk about that stage bc for me, that’s the most “otherworldly” stage. It’s so off the beaten path and the stage itself is a red coin hunt in a grassy sandbox. Truly baffles me, I love it
The red coin grassy stage (I think it's called "Red Coin Field?") is one of my favorite shines now. I never found it as a little kid, but I found it during a playthrough when I was older. I don't know why I love it so much. Maybe because it's just so surreal.
Speaking of the watermelon stage, I managed to knock it straight from the top all the way down, directly in front of the boardwalk today. That was so satisfying. I then DIED on the blender. Man…
I still haven’t managed to recreate that. I still can’t believe I actually died on that blender. Also, just noticed the flappy bird at 2:09 that is great lol
This stage was always so fascinating to me. Its location, its appearance, the fact that literally anyone can figure out you can just jump to the end which feels oddly good to do, then the option of humorously shattering Mario's legs as much as you want on the way just cause shows how the illusion of how height and slope works :). It's just so odd even for this game and almost feels like it's in the wrong game in a way. Then more recently on tcrf I learned how there's that random platform in the green hole that's slippery for some reason in the Japanese version which means they knew it's there. It's speculated to either be a remnant of an early build or just some odd thing left in which is always super fascinating to me in games especially this one.
@@risa1467 I think it being piss easy is kind of the point though. There might be an element of cheekiness to this from the devs, but it's also entirely made for young children. I fucking loved this slide when I was really young and I played it multiple times. It also highlights that there are secrets in Delfino Plaza for the young kids to make them curious. It's like in the newer Mario Karts, if the race is over and there's still someone in last way behind everyone the game prioritizes bullet bills so the kid can just mash the item button to finish the race, and that's a mechanic made for 3-4 year olds.
I like that there's a strange leftover ledge below the slide in 1.0, and in between that and 1.1, they found the ledge. Instead of thinking "that shouldn't be there," they thought, "oh, weird that he still slides on that."
This slide level is also the favorite starting template of Sunshine custom level creators since it has nothing in it but stage geometry a skybox and a shinesprite. definately do pianta village next. fun fact on the upper end of the islands model in pianta theres a chunk cut out for an abandoned level.
When I was a little kid, I couldn't figure out how to beat this level. For the life of me. I was around 4-5 when I first got the game and kept dying on it, to the point of getting several Game Over screens. I hated this level back then. I still can't explain why I couldn't figure out how to beat it, but the day I beat it was one of the most exciting days in my 5-year-old life lol
@@kendallmonge649 I did that too. I think with all the slopes and holes it makes a dumb 4 year old think you have to bob and weave through them without realizing you can just jump over them, even after the game forces you to jump over them.
It's a weird mixture of "Just let it happen, the secret is don't jump, let the game guide you down safely" and "the sooner you jump, the easier it is to get down to the bottom" a real paradox.
there's something scary about a video game teaching a young child to "just let it happen" >_> but aside from that, this is a fun level; both if you try to play it the way it was _meant_ to be played (sliding all the way down and dodging holes) or if you just skip it for the lulz.
@@hobomike6935 I don't think a concept as vague as just letting things happen is capable of being dangerous. I mean that's how a lot of object-throwing sports/games work.
I like the concept of going in-depth on individual levels. I have Super Mario Sunshine again thanks to 3D All Stars, but I haven't full on finished the game since the Gamecube era, so individual level episodes is like a trip down memory lane while learning new tidbits at the same time. Also, you are pulling off the bald and beard look very well, definitely like that look on you.
As a big GameCube appreciator who is a member of the Mario Superstar Baseball netplay community, this was incredible! The way you think is very relatable because it puts quirky thoughts that people have [but don't say out loud] into words. I don't even need you to keep making "ha-ha funny" jokes. Just keep presenting with the same mind style and you'll be golden.
Your editing is always stellar and yet every time you shock me with how much better you've gotten. My personal favorite is you on the rocking chair holding up while the input plays out behind you. Just absolutely wonderful, I'm so glad your passion for Sunshine translates so well into this.
Your timing and composition are so on point. Made the 12 minutes just fly by! Also love the use of the greenscreen. Would have been an 11/10 if you've set your light source on the other side to match the lighting in the cell :D
I don't mean to sound obsequious, but I click your videos the minute I realize they're yours, even if it's something I wouldn't otherwise care about. You have a way of presenting complicated information in a way that's engaging and authentic without droning on and on about minutia, I'll definitely be back for the next one
this video has taught three very important lessons. 1. No matter how well you know a game, childhood or otherwise, it can still hold secrets in the most mundane of places. from mechanics to secrets to even little details you didn't notice. you can still find more. 2. Speedrunners, once again, are something to be feared. as their persistence and grace trumps over... well... anything, at least that I can think of. 3. That I really want a mod that replaces "Shine Get" with the word "Whatever"
Finally caught one of your videos soon enough after upload to be able to help fight the TH-cam algorithm with an early comment and like. You're absolutely one of my favorite speedrunners, and speedrun documentarians. I'm grateful for everything you've created and published thus far, and am continuously joyful to see any new content you release.
I love how all this silliness happened just because some goof at Nintendo decided to start the timer at level load. If it only started the timer on the first frame _after_ the cutscene ended, you could just use the in-game timer with no issues.
OH... So its almost like the opposite of the bus analogy in SMB1 Speedrunning. Instead of waiting for the bus to take off, the time it takes you to get off the bus before the next frame depends on if you're at the front, the middle or the back of the bus.
The editing is fantastic, especially with how you integrated your rocking chair into some of the shots, like the closing transition in 11:45 Beautiful stuff
really looking forward to more of these IL run type videos from you man, Sunshine has such rich potential for speedrun history with how few of its shines have fully optimized world records. seriously enjoyed this yo, super fun to watch
THE LEGEND IS BACK absolutely love your video style. excited to see more, even tho I've never played Sunshine (I tried after your WR record history vids, tbh, but turns out 3d platformers are just my greatest nemesis xD)
Never been able to enjoy Sunshine casually very much, but the speedrunning scene is always an interesting one. Your editing and pacing doesn't feel forced at all, very nice video format!
Another great video! I think that the red coin fish would be an interesting level to look at due to the fish ai and the underwater npcs that are the only of their kind in the game in addition to all of the nooks and crannies. In any case I look forward to what you do next.
The editing on this video is top notch. Can't wait to see more of your content now that you're a full-time content creator; as a Sunshine fanatic (who isn't skilled enough to speedrun yet), your documentaries are my favorite speedrunning docs by far, and I love your in-depth looks at levels and mechanics. Maybe you could do The Watermelon Festival next? Maybe you could talk about both the Nintended method and Gelato Beach Skip. I know you covered that a bit in your any% video, but maybe there's more detail about that level that you could discuss in a separate video.
Thank you so much for listing the music you use din the description! ^^ I always really appreciate it when people do that, so I can find the music I'd like to know the name of again! Thanks for the video, I agree with the comment saying how good your editing is, I love the intro, too! XD
