Every project ever made by humans, from the best to the worst, are like this Specially when it involves programming, even the best made programs are held together by duct tape, you would be surprised how many companies use decade old software that has entire sections of code with comments made by past devs that go something like this: // "Don't delete or change this, I don't know why but this piece of shit somehow holds the fabric of the universe together, add to the counter and pass on to the next unlucky dev" // "Hours spent in this hell: 340h"
The string and a prayer parts are carefully, thoughtfully designed too! They had to figure out exactly where they could cut those corners to optimize the game without affecting normal gameplay.
I always love when in the middle of his long eloquent monologues he includes audio of the actual runners and it’s just them screaming their heads off like crazed madmen
Fun fact: The moment this video was posted, SM64 had about 2000 current viewers on twitch. About an hour afterwards (presumably when people had finished the video), it jumped up to over 40,000.
As a history major and history enthusiast I looove that you explain your sources and why some sources were included and why others were not. Is the 16 star category now officially dead competitively? Or will Suigi or someone else return to defy the impossible? Only time will tell...
@@kyrette1666 I like that 14:54 WR, cause he makes one more turn in the water before the submarine by mistake, losing like 4 or 5 seconds, and he's like "rip", thinking his run his over. And he's so incredibly good at the end, that he more than makes up for it XD
It's so fascinating to see the skill floor rise in these highly competitive speedruns. At the beginning you can mess up movement and miss a Bowser throw. By the end, mess up even the simplest thing and you're out of the running.
Optimization is a b%tch like that lol Once runs get highly optimized, they're almost frame-perfect by the end. By the time a game's SpeedRun comm has matured, there's almost no room for error at all. It's crazy, and why I've never gotten into running myself.

Slipperynips reaction at the end is so perfect. This video really puts into perspective how insane of a record it is. After all these years matching damn near perfection on a game as complex as sm64 in celebration of such an amazing run we get a "Wow. Alright cool. Sweet."

I love how they figured out ways to rule out cheated runs. Mario has a universal blink cycle. Every 64 frames he blinks no matter what. You can tell something is a segmented run if that gets out of sync.
Damn you've really become a historian of speedrunning. Like this is some real scholarly shit you're doing, and preserving a history and culture that is only a few decades old. Keep up the epic work!
I feel bad for KANNO though. Man spent 3000 hours streaming trying to get that WR. You can see the relief of that man. Then Slipperynip just went "wow alright. cool. sweet" 🤣
It's not like Slip wasn't trying though, he'd been doing runs constantly since long before Kanno was targeting 16. He had so many runs into BitS that were WR pace that it was a meme that he would choke it. I was super confused but not at all surprised, Turk is the kinda person that would find a 30 second save somewhere in SM64, not give any proof, refuse to elaborate, then leave like the demigod he is before people find out he wasn't lying
When I was 6 years old, my cousin taught me how to do the 16 star run and it completely blew my mind. @@Anon.G I’d argue it’s more likely just super high standards for themselves. Take a look at some of the most successful sports coaches, a lot of times you’ll see their team have a great game/match, and then in the press conference the coach will say something like “we’ve got some things we need to fix…” That’s what keeps them at the top, relentlessly pursuing perfection, even when people think they’ve already achieved it.
I've seen speedrunners react that way to getting a pb or wr multiple times, it goes to show how obsessed with perfection they are. They're aware of every single flaw in their run, and are already imagining how much more they can improve on it.

It's interesting how SM64 is both carefully, thoughtfully designed and also held together with string and prayer
A lot of the most interesting parts of games are actually faults or certain ways they choose to make the game. Accidental not purposely done.
Every project ever made by humans, from the best to the worst, are like this
Specially when it involves programming, even the best made programs are held together by duct tape, you would be surprised how many companies use decade old software that has entire sections of code with comments made by past devs that go something like this:
// "Don't delete or change this, I don't know why but this piece of shit somehow holds the fabric of the universe together, add to the counter and pass on to the next unlucky dev"
// "Hours spent in this hell: 340h"
Advanced Duct-tape technique jutsu is the best way to describe Mario 64 imo
Don't forget paper clips and bubblegum
The string and a prayer parts are carefully, thoughtfully designed too! They had to figure out exactly where they could cut those corners to optimize the game without affecting normal gameplay.
I always love when in the middle of his long eloquent monologues he includes audio of the actual runners and it’s just them screaming their heads off like crazed madmen

As an update, last week a speedrunner called Suigi beat Slipperynip's record with a 14.55! Congrats to the Canadian! 😁👍
Update: WEEGEE JUST OVERWROTE HIS HEARTBREAKING MISTAKE WITH A WORLD RECORD OF 14.53!
Update again: Good god, Suigi just destroyed Weegee's time! A 14.48!
Update again again: This guy just never ceases to amaze. From 14.48 to 14.43!! Suigi well and truly the GOAT!
It continues: Yes I'm still updating this comment and yes Suigi just keeps the records coming. 14.41 now, 9 seconds quicker than 2nd place! 🤯
Is it over: Well, this is insane. Suigi has just demolished his own world record with what could be the perfect 16 star speed run of 14.35!!!!! To quote the man himself "I literally can't beat that. It's so fascinating to see the skill floor rise in these highly competitive speedruns. At the beginning you can mess up movement and miss a Bowser throw. By the end, mess up even the simplest thing and you're out of the running.
Optimization is a b%tch like that lol
