A few things: To answer your question, none of this movie's story is based on any comic. The character of the Phantasm and her backstory was, to my knowledge, completely original to this film. And I think that's one of the things people love so much about this movie. It's a completely original story that nonetheless captures the soul of the character better than any other Batman movie. And, just to be clear, when people say that this is the best Batman movie, they often don't mean that it is the best film in the Batman franchise. What they mean is that this movie does a better job of telling a story that is actually about Batman. This movie explores his tortured soul and conveys his internal conflict and motivations better than any other Batman film. The Dark Knight may be a better movie, but Mask of the Phantasm is a better Batman movie. Also, one detail that I love is that the whole climactic confrontation of this movie takes place in the old, dilapidated ruins of what was a metaphor for Bruce and Andrea's future together. Symbolism, or whatever.
@@jp3813 That's a fantastic point, and I totally agree. Batman is more of a reactionary character in that one. Mask of the Phantasm is a very loose adaptation of the four-part story Batman: Year Two from 1987. The killer vigilante in the comic was named the Reaper, and it actually was the father instead of the daughter under the mask in the original story.

MOTP is definitely one of the most underrated movies in Batman lore. WB didn’t expect this movie to do much, hence the limited release in theaters. This film was released on Christmas Day, 1993. Unfortunately, it wasn't advertised very well by the studio, so it didn't do all that well (though it later did very well on home video). Mark Hamill later recounted in a podcast with Kevin Smith, that on Christmas in NY, he took his family to see the film and there were maybe only half a dozen people at the theatre. He invited them to come watch the movie with him and his family and those few who were there got to spend "Christmas with the Joker".

I saw this opening day. Xmas 1993. Most solid Batman movie experience ever. Everyone applauded super loud when The Joker came out and laughed extra hard whenever he was on screen. Everyone had the exact same reaction to what was going on in the movie. That's the only time I've ever experienced that.
If you haven't seen the animated series do yourself a favor and catch it. It's widely considered the greatest animated show ever. Mark Hammil is the greatest Joker as Conroy is the greatest Batman. Also it's where Harley Quinn was created.
Always one of my favorites since I was a kid. Such a complex movie for being animated and most people don’t understand that. Bruce was left with a Broken City and a Broken heart.
Andrea was invented for the film and the character of the Phantasm was only very loosely based on the villain The Reaper from the comic Batman: Year Two. Batman is one of those characters that you can add elements of backstory to and as long as it doesn’t break established lore and canon, it can work really well.
I like Batman: Mask of the Phantasm mostly because how the creator makes the setting of the movie. I mostly like how they created a unique design on how Gotham City looks like and how it looks alot like the 50s.
I just realized after all these years that Andreas voice actress is the same woman who voices Lois Lane in the Superman show. Can’t believe I never caught that.
9:20 I really wish you would watch at least a few episodes of Batman the Animated Series. It's the TV show this movie was based off. There is an episode called "The Mechanic" which has the origin of the Bat Mobile. Batman the animated series was great, it's still my favorite tv show even as an adult. There were a few episodes that won emmys. There were a few two part episodes in particular that were very good and worth watching, Robin's Reckoning, Two Face, Heart of Steel, and quite a few single episodes that were really good too like "Harlequinade" and "Heart of Ice". There are like 60 something episodes but the nice thing is they don't really need to be watched in anyorder. If people enjoyed you reacting to this movie i'm sure they will love you reacting to Batman the Animated Series. 10:30 that's the entire plot of the movie. This is why Batman can't have a family. 14:57 that's the DCAU Joker's trademark. He has an explosive temper but just as you think he's going to explode he calms down, starts cracking wise, laughing, then does something diabolical.
Even tho How cool, smart strong Batman is. He couldn't get himself out from that alley where he saw his parents murder. He still struggling with that trauma, Deep inside he's still just kid who's trying to stop two bullets!
17:10 - 17:31 🤨🤔... Uh, quick question, um- WHY DIDN'T THEY JUST ASK BRUCE FOR THE MONEY?! I mean, he would've married your daughter, thus he would've been able to help you with your troubles.
The animated DC universe from the 90's has its own story and this movie is part of it. It's basically the Batman cartoon, the Superman cartoon, the Batman Beyond cartoon, the Justice League cartoon and a few animated movies. As a whole, it's really, really great, and has some of the best portrayals of these characters ever put on screen. They're not always exactly comics-accurate as far as the stories go, but they are always accurate to the spirit of each character.
I hope The Batman has some Detective moments like this movie and another great Animated Batman movie is Under the Red hood and Batman the Dark Knight Returns. Enjoy💖
No, Batman and spiderman completely have different problem. Because, spiderman can be happy in his life, he is still Peter Parker. But, whereas real Bruce Wayne died with his parents, in his place dark entity that craving for vengeance upon criminal elements was born. He can never truly be happy.
Now that you’ve seen your first animated Batman movie, I’d like to recommend Batman: Under the Red Hood. It’s one of my all time favorites. And while it’s a darker story, it’s a really good one.
The way you just tear into Arthur is worth every second of the video. Also, "Why you worried about those little ass planes, Bruce?" Two seconds later, "No wait, worry about those tiny planes!" I feel like there's also an analogue for Batman and Joker's fight destroying the 'city' too. As far as the storyline for Mask of Phantasm, and Andrea, they're pretty much exclusive to the movie itself, and the 90's animated continuity, and have not really been revisited or retouched in comics, movies, games, or cartoons since then. Why that is, I couldn't tell you. Although there is a VERY small reference in MK11 when Spawn confronts Joker before a fight and recites the infamous line, "Your Angel of Death awaits."
So happy you reacted to this. It is my favorite Batman movie. It captures the detective side that so many movies miss. And I love the ending. The best Batman movies end bittersweetly. He can win, but at a cost. That is the best Batman can hope for, but the eternal battle against evil without personal happiness is what makes him a hero.
The Batman films do show Bruce Wayne acting as a detective, but the 1989 Batman film established a trend that has continued in the subsequent movies: Bruce does most of his detective work out of the costume. Whether it's an investigation into the Penguin's childhood (Batman Returns), a deciphering of the Riddler's word games (Batman Forever), a ballistics test to retrieve a fingerprint (The Dark Knight), or a series of probes to learn about the White Portuguese ship (Batman v Superman), Bruce is almost always doing his best work without letting that bulky costume get in his way.
The music "Birth of Batman"as Batman dons the suit, turning to Alfred and the orchestra and choir singing the theme is one of the most epic moments ever. Gives me chills every time. Also yes, this is the best Batman movie(and one of the few times BTAS Joker actually got to kill people.)
Hart Bochner also played a supreme jagoff in _Die Hard._ I watched that one last year for the first time, and when I heard his voice, I went "So THAT'S why he was cast in Mask of the Phantasm."
This is the best Batman story ever told in a movie. Andrea was invented for the movie, I think she was named for Andrea Romano, the voice director on every animated project that matters in the least.
I adore this movie! It's my favorite Batman movie out there. Andrea makes for a fantastic character and a great foil to Bruce. The scene where he apologizes to his parents for being happy gets me every time.
This movie always makes me wanna cry yet I never do. Hate myself for not crying lol but I’m glad you love this movie. I recommend the Dark Knight Returns part 1 and 2. It’s on HBO max and they are Batman movies. I’ve only seen part 1 and just a few scenes of part 2 but I have to say they are the craziest dc movies I’ve seen.
Batman Under the Redhood, The Dark Knight Returns, Batman Year One and Batman Beyond Return of the Joker are all amazing animated films. I’d watch the first three episodes of Batman Beyond though before Return of the Joker.
Andrea was created for this movie, named for the voice director Andrea Romano, who also voice directed Avatar the last Airbender, animaniacs, and much much more. This is loosly based on a batman story where it actaully was the father of a love interest. Batman's main love interests are as follows, actress Julie Madison(his first), Selina Kyle Catwoman, Vicki vale(a lois lane rippoff), Pamila poison Ivy Isly(who was incapable of true love but did have a crush on batman), Silver St Cloud(who was the first to discover his secret identity), Talia Al Gul, the daughter of the demon and later mother of his son, and then there were a few minor ones like the reaper's daughter.
This animated Batman really embodies all the best aspects of previous comic book Batman versions. They especially drew from the 70s Batman written and drawn by Denny O’Neil and Neal Adams, a detective first who wasn’t as dark, dealt with more street level crime, and was more emotionally stable than the more recent portrayals.
The 90s Batman Animated Series was in a completely different league. It was one of three comic-based animated TV series that I literally grew up watching, the other two being Spider-Man and X-Men. And this film is actually one of two feature-length films for the 90s series, with the second one being "Batman: Subzero". So before you check out any other animated Batman movies, including Under The Red Hood, make sure you check out Subzero first!
This is my favorite Batman movie. I remember seeing it at the theater when it came out at Christmas 1993. I was 10. The movie is based on the animated show that debuted the year before. This story is not based on a comic but there are other DC animated movies based on comics as well as original stories. Batman The Dark Knight Returns is an animated movie based on a comic of the same name that I recommend. I would also recommend these other DC animated movies: All-Star Superman, Justice League Doom, Justice League The Flashpoint Paradox, Justice League The New Frontier, Batman Assault on Arkham, Green Lantern First Flight, Wonder Woman, Justice League Crisis on Two Earths, Batman Under the Red Hood, Batman Year One, Superman Doomsday, Justice League Gods and Monsters, Superman/ Batman Public Enemies, Superman/ Batman Apocalypse, Justice League Throne of Atlantis. I'd also recommend Batman The Animated Series, Batman Beyond series, Justice League series, Batman The Brave and The Bold series. There's more DC animated movies and shows that are also good if you're interested. Thanks for the video.
Iirc this movie's plot took inspo from Batman Year 2, but also really improved upon it. Also like, Bruce never really learnt to process his grief properly I think. That's why he struggled with the fact that he's not feeling as sad as he was when he was a child about his parents' death. He felt like he should still feel tormented about it, he can't fully comprehend that it's okay to also build relationships with others. That's why people are happy when in the comics, he started a relationship with Selina, before it not mattering whatsoever.
Loved this flim! And when Burce became batman for the first time Alfred giving him his belt and handing him the mask. Bruce tries it on for the first time the music really hits 🔥 🔥 🔥 Alfred: My God!! Perfect!!
I went to see a special showing of this in the theater in 2018(its 25th anniversary)...and less than 20 minutes in the power went out and wouldn't come back on.
I believe Andrea was based on the character Rachel Caspian from Batman Year Two (who also loosely inspired Rachel Dawes.) In that story, her father actually *was* the killer.
Yes. On the one hand, this movie is a great example of how to take cues from a Batman comic without directly adapting it (much as Batman Begins does with Batman: Year One). On the other hand, the producers have never given proper credit to the writer or artists of Batman: Year Two, which is kinda shady.
Just subbed. Loved your commentary. You're such an astute young lady. Loved how you picked up on all the details and appreciated all the emotional nuances of this story. It's one my favorite if not the best Batman stories ever. How he almost DIDN'T become Batman. Andrea and The Phantasm was a new addition to the mythology when they started doing Batman The Animated Series and when it was taking off.
Fun fact about the music: Shirley Walker (composer for this film) was credited as the conductor for Danny Elfman's Batman '89 score a few years prior. Hans Zimmer was credited as a synthesist in Mask of the Phantasm's, and now he has Nolan and Snyder's Batman music under his belt. I just find those little connections interesting. Probably my favorite reaction for the channel so far. MotP is hands down my #1 Batman movie of all time. The Animated Series associated with it is just as good as well. For other animated DC reactions, Under the Red Hood is the best place to start.
@@bookwormben Wow, I did not know that. That's incredible. I've always been so blown away by the theme that I guess I never thought about checking the lyrics.
Fun fact: Andrea aka the Phagasm made a second appearance. She was hired by Amanda Walker to kill young Terry's (aka Batman Beyond) parents just he would be trauma like Bruce Wayne and hope that trauma would led him to become the next Batman like Bruce but she could bring herself to do it
To answer your question this movie is original the villain and the story too it's not from any comic book. Also the voice actors of Batman and Joker are the same of Arkham series
I have a theory about the ending we saw with Andrea disappearing with the Joker. I've always wondered if she had let him go or killed him. But after finding out that Andrea uses a variation of Scarecrow's fear toxin, it makes me wonder if Bruce believed he was seeing Andrea possibly truly giving in to vengeance and losing herself completely, while Joker escaped. Or maybe Andrea did let him go, as a way to show that she wasn't completely gone yet.

Always one of my favorites since I was a kid. Such a complex movie for being animated and most people don’t understand that. Bruce was left with a Broken City and a Broken heart.
I love this movie, AND with your commentary, *clapping intensifies*
@@KrystalogyReacts how are you watching it a streaming service or online
@@KrystalogyReacts I think you should watch Batman animated series I think you might enjoy it
What clapping 😳?
@@jamesvader1195 it’s on hbo max.
Bruce: "The "I" word?"
Girl: "Ingagement."
Me: 🤨
I would say this is the best animated Batman movie ever. Batman Returns and Batman Begins are probably my favorite live action movies thus far.
Andrea was invented for the film and the character of the Phantasm was only very loosely based on the villain The Reaper from the comic Batman: Year Two. Batman is one of those characters that you can add elements of backstory to and as long as it doesn’t break established lore and canon, it can work really well.
I love this its my top five. Number one being Batman Under the Red Hood
I think they said it was her role here that convinced them to cast her as Lois later because of how good she was.
I think she was better as Lois. Then again, there was Teri Hatcher who played Lois in the live live 1990s series. You give your pick.
@@osmanyousif7849 I’ve never watched any live action Superman film or show that came before Superman Returns. So I’m gonna go with Superman TAS.😂
Definitely one of the best Batman stories
17:10 - 17:31 🤨🤔... Uh, quick question, um- WHY DIDN'T THEY JUST ASK BRUCE FOR THE MONEY?! I mean, he would've married your daughter, thus he would've been able to help you with your troubles.
Always remember watching this as a wee boy at the cinema, my pops took me to see it pretty late even tho he worked early af. A true hero : D
Love seeing your reactions
I hope The Batman has some Detective moments like this movie and another great Animated Batman movie is Under the Red hood and Batman the Dark Knight Returns. Enjoy💖
I keep forgetting that I've seen Affleck in animated form
It was Awesome seeing this on the Big Screen! I wish they would've kept releasing these in the Theater.
Awesome Glad Your Reacting to this Batman Film not a lot of TH-camrs do. This Is an Absolute Classic.
Andrea is part of the Batman Beyond project with Amanda Waller
YES! Mask of the Phantasm is goated
Yes easily the best animated Batman movie ever made. I remember loving it as a kid. I love it even older now
Great movie
The whole Bruce Tim universe is perfection overall!
Romance, action and a well crafted examination of Bruce and Batman.
What's not to love!
Yessir the movie reaction videos are awesome!!! I already gave the video a thumbs up!!!
You should watch The Batman Vs. Dracula.
23:27 love the symbolism in this scene.
8:01 But in dark knight Bruce was trying to scan the residue of each bullet shard impact in order to find the correct match .
When everything around me starts exploding I'm doing this. 23:30 For me one of the best Joker laughs of all time
Batman Under the Redhood, The Dark Knight Returns, Batman Year One and Batman Beyond Return of the Joker are all amazing animated films. I’d watch the first three episodes of Batman Beyond though before Return of the Joker.
2:44 I DIED!!! 😂😂😂😂
This movie is the first ever appearance of the phantasm, she was made specifically for this movie and later brought to the comics
Great reaction
Check out Batman: Under the Red Hood!
What I like about the mystery element of this movie is that you get the chance to figure it out for yourself.
This is my favorite Batman movie it defines what and who Batman is very well.
12:55 He was so cute. Look at his eyes, full of hope.
I love this movie. I wish I could have experienced seeing this in the theater as a kid. That would have been so cool.
I would also recommend these other DC animated movies:
All-Star Superman, Justice League Doom, Justice League The Flashpoint Paradox, Justice League The New Frontier, Batman Assault on Arkham, Green Lantern First Flight, Wonder Woman, Justice League Crisis on Two Earths, Batman Under the Red Hood, Batman Year One, Superman Doomsday, Justice League Gods and Monsters, Superman/ Batman Public Enemies, Superman/ Batman Apocalypse, Justice League Throne of Atlantis.
I'd also recommend Batman The Animated Series, Batman Beyond series, Justice League series, Batman The Brave and The Bold series. There's more DC animated movies and shows that are also good if you're interested. Thanks for the video.
Hoping for an under the red hood reaction
the scene where bruce is begging at his parents grave to let him be happy is one of the saddest and heartbreaking moments of the series.
7:06, death by Angel!
Batman TAS really does showcase his detective skills better than most popular media, but yeah I wish they'd put more emphasis on that too
Loved this flim! And when Burce became batman for the first time Alfred giving him his belt and handing him the mask.
Bruce tries it on for the first time the music really hits 🔥 🔥 🔥
Alfred: My God!!
Perfect!!
2:23, that was the Indiana Jones punch Sound!
I went to see a special showing of this in the theater in 2018(its 25th anniversary)...and less than 20 minutes in the power went out and wouldn't come back on.
This is one of my favourite films and your commentary was absolutely delightful. Thanks for sharing. ✌
I believe Andrea was based on the character Rachel Caspian from Batman Year Two (who also loosely inspired Rachel Dawes.)
In that story, her father actually *was* the killer.
I was at the theater on Christmas in 1993 watching this. It was awesome on the big screen.
Fun fact the joker is voiced by mark Hamill unless you already knew that
Hamill*
3:45, this is the Bruce Wayne we need in The live action movies.
His name is Ben Affleck
@@Oz349 Kevin’s Batman wouldn’t brand criminals like cows and would be more careful with his secret identity.
Something else kind of cool is the lyrics in the opening are the names of the cast and crew pronounced backwards
@@bookwormben Wow, I did not know that. That's incredible. I've always been so blown away by the theme that I guess I never thought about checking the lyrics.
Fun fact: Andrea aka the Phagasm made a second appearance. She was hired by Amanda Walker to kill young Terry's (aka Batman Beyond) parents just he would be trauma like Bruce Wayne and hope that trauma would led him to become the next Batman like Bruce but she could bring herself to do it
This movie is incredible and the show it spun off from is classic and most of it holds up really well. Really loved your commentary to it!
To answer your question this movie is original the villain and the story too it's not from any comic book. Also the voice actors of Batman and Joker are the same of Arkham series
That’s really cool! Loved the Arkham series, it’s awesome Hamill is joker here too
Its such a shame the phantasm hasn't been brought back in the series. Such a great antihero.
She was in Epilogue
There's a new continuation in the comics. It's called Batman/Catwoman. Andrea took again the mantle as Phantasm.
This was definitely the best of the animated Batman's solo films.
