Like you mentioned, one of the beautiful things with this movie is it really returning to the origins of Batman. It wasn’t a big blockbuster superhero. He solved crimes. It was all about the mysteries. Uncovering the villain. That’s what this is.

Someone smartly realized that, since Robert Pattinson is 6'1 and has a square jaw, that if you buff him up and give him a cape, he'd look fucking terrifying.

    • @edwardpark247
      @edwardpark247 ปีที่แล้ว +93

actually he did buff up for the movie, but he was really skinny before he went through training. Besides, my ideal Batman isn't about brawn, it's about martial arts and acrobatics. I think a bigger Batman would have messed up the chemistry between Pattinson and Kravitz. I really liked her performance too. Despite the height difference, they made a cute couple. I really like how he stops her at the end (not gonna spoil it), when he says "you paid enough," it moved me. Also another scene i thought was interesting was when Bruce is talking with Alfred for the first time since he talked to Falcone. He's basically just sitting there watching over Alfred, and you're thinking, aw how nice, he loves Alfred so much, and then when Alfred wakes up and sees Bruce and smiles, Bruce just stares at Alfred and accuses him of lying. Didn't even give Alfred a chance to heal before he got into it with him. I thought it was funny. Not like comedy, but an interesting choice by Pattinson. He does the same thing to Catwoman. He doesn't hold back and just accuses her of being a piece of shit, and when she explains herself, he suddenly softens and apologizes. Amazing how Pattinson can bring both the brutality and the compassion of Batman together in an original way. It was definitely not a Christian Bale Batman. Pattinson's Batman was more like Keaton's Batman, I thought (which I totally loved.) Keaton's got a lot of range. From Johnny Dangerously to Beetlejuice to Batman... but I digress.

@@edwardpark247one thing about Affleck's Batman, he *looks* comic accurately massive, but when you see him whipping around at lightning speed and doing acrobatic martial arts, it just looks fake. A dude that big who is physically human just cannot move like that. Massive buff Batman works for comics and animation, but live action Batman should always have the build of a kickboxer. Lean and cut. Loved this take, and I thought Pattinson was bulked out just the right amount to look seriously intimidating while still believably agile

@@j0hn00 there's an episode of Batman The Animated Series where Batman gets fucked up by Bane, but then somehow comes back the next day and kicks Bane's ass. One of the things I loved about this movie is that, not only did they portray a more accurate Batman (a crime-solving detective with brutal methods instead of an all-punching action hero), they showed him at an early stage of his "career"; they mention that he's been at it for about 2 years so he's not exactly a rookie but the Riddler is his 1st "true" villain. We get to see him being truly challenged for the first time and I thought it was a very original take, he doesn't always get the clues right the first time but he's quick to think on his feet and proves time and time again that he's smarter than the police.
Also at this point he's hasn't quite established what he wants to represent, calling himself Vengeance shows that he's still "acting out" because of his trauma, rather than using his trauma as a catalyst to help Gotham. By the end of the movie he realises that he needs to be more than just a tool for Vengeance and thus truly embracing the Batman moniker that the people gave him.

I appreciate the fact that they didn’t overdo Pattinson’s Batman voice. It’s more whispery and lower in tone. Kinda Keaton ish. But when he gets more aggressive, I sort of hear Bale’s influence at certain times, but not to the extent of overdoing it either (I hope they don’t overdo the voice in the sequels though). Pattinson made it his own while taking inspirations. I applaud him for doing an outstanding job for what the writing needed him to be. Heck, I applaud everyone who was involved in this. If you haven’t figured it out by now, the electric line was dangling over the rising water. If it touched the water, it could’ve killed the people in the water. That’s why Bruce cut it. Of course, when his whole body is on the line, he doesn’t get shocked, but when he makes the separate connection with the batarang is when he gets shocked. So he risked his life to save them which is actually his first real self-sacrificing moment

It's all in the eyes. Matt Reeves proved that pure emotion could be conveyed in just the eyes whenever we first saw Ceaser up on screen. He takes it all to new heights with The Batman, and it is just something else to behold, I will never forget my first viewing. Every single gaze with Pattinson is lingered upon so intentionally, both in highly subtle and dramatic ways. It allows us to interpret directly what we think is going on behind the eyes, behind the mask and behind the man. The Batman. Reeves is truly on another level when it comes to movie making.

A lot of the previous movies show the origin, but then jump to how Batman is later once he has settled down abit and becomes more detached so he can stay in control. But this one shows this raw, vengeance driven Batman. And the story arc to learn he needs to become more. Also the capturing the film noir, detective story. Batman in the comics was referred to as the worlds greatest detective but you hardly see that in any previous incarnations, maybe a little. They said they were drawing heavily on inspiration from the movie Seven and they really did a good job of it.

He was horrified at Riddler's goon referring to himself as vengeance (Bruce had referred to himself as vengeance and so had everyone else). Even though the pacing of the movie can be a little slow at times, I actually love how it was paced compared to other super hero movies. And honestly like u said this isnt really a super hero movie, at it's core it's a detective mystery. But after so long, the super action packed fast paced comic book movie starts to feel formulaic and predictable, so I really loved that this one allowed the story to breathe more and took it's time developing the characters and the plot rather than just bashing u over the head with action. I just love the artistic elements of this movie so much: the dramatic lighting (it's not bright and over saturated like marvel movies are nowadays), the cinematography (lots of close ups to show emotion and story through the eyes), the score, the writing. I just think it was a nice change of pace for a character as established and well loved as Batman... I feel like it needed something like this to bring life back into what a batman story could be.

@sergioaccioly5219 something I would agree is the Dark Knight Arc. Let me explain.
We see in Begins his established/complicated relationship with Rachel. And in Knight, she hooks up with Harvey but Bruce still has feelings for her. Then Rachel dies. We don't see much of Bruce's reaction to this besides finding the coin. Keep in mind that Bruce is a pretty cold person with a fake facade when in public. So then when he confronts Harvey who is now Two-Face, he tries talking him out of shooting Gordon's son. He doesn't mention Rachel but he can deduce what Harvey is going through. Sadly, Batman is forced to push him off a cliff in order to save Gordon's son, and he dies. Despite it being Harvey's fault for being in this situation and getting distracted, Batman is still the one to kill him. And I personally think that it was more of a mercy kill because we see Batman has a lot of gadgets to help him knock out Harvey, but no. He tackles him off the cliff after being shot. I'm just saying, that sounds kind of like an arc to me

He radiates a quite mysterious strength or something that just captures my 100% of my interest. I agree with you Alex this Batman has a great cast. I kind of like this more then some of the past Batman movies, its doesnt seem as dark or maybe as 'evil' dark as some of the other ones. I've got to figure this is the most "detective-y" we've ever gotten in a live action batman that takes itself seriously. Next in line for that would probably have been the original 1980s Batman by Tim Burton, but it was more than a little campy. It suited the time frame, but with a number of movies in the genre going down a more "superheroes but gritty and real" route, Pattinson does an amazing job of bringing it to life without having the movie being too much up its own ass.

One of Batman's most legendary lines is "I am vengeance! I am the night! I AM BATMAN!"
Vengeance, The Night, The Bat, The Dark Knight, Batman, The Batman, The World's Greatest Detective, Detective, Bats, Batsy, The Caped Crusader, B-Man, The Goddamn Batman....they're all names for Batman.
I think a LOT of other people name him a lot of things before he himself officially internalizes being called "Batman".
Which makes sense, because Batman is an objectively ludicrous thing to name yourself if you want to be taken seriously, even if you DO dress as a bat.
I think he only starts fully thinking of himself as "Batman" once the rest of the world really settles on it.
Until then, he just thinks of himself as the embodiment of Vengeance.
He doesn't have a need to name himself.
He just has a name for his purpose.

The reason it seems more like a murder mystery is because above all else batman is a DETECTIVE, DC literally stands for detective comics, because of batman being the world's greatest detective, batman isn't a superhero, he's a vigilante, superheros have superpowers, batman is a billionaire in a suit with intense combat and detective training, and a screw loose, and a grudge against a certain 🤡
    😂😂
Also fun fact, did you know that in the early days (about the first year or so) of Bruce being batman he was afraid of heights, hence his hesitation when he got to the roof of the police station, because this batman takes place in his first year
