The song , to me , symbolises Andrea’s torment, the music is warped and the voice is distorted, the life which Andrea once led is now warped into a eternal nightmare and the voice which comforted Bruce is now distorted and distant.
I remember seeing this in theaters with my stepdad for my birthday. It really impressed him. He didn’t think a kids movie would be so good. The scene when Bruce says “ I didn’t expect to be happy,”was a standout moment. Also the Phantasm was a great charecter and I wish she came back later in the show. It’s nice that she recently appeared in the comics.
Fun fact, Andrea Beaumont aka the Phantasm would later appear in Project Batman Beyond. A Justice League Unlimited episode. She was supposed to kill Terry's parents, but decided against it.
I wish I could have seen this film in cinemas but I was far too young at the time. Also the cover to "I never even told you" is very disturbing. The original maybe cheesy but I love it. It is very soothing. Kevin gave his best performance as Batman in the film. The scene with Bruce pleading with his deceased parents is still heartbreaking, especially when you think about Kevin's own tragic relationship with his own parents. Andrea was a sweetheart for giving Kevin a hug. He certainly deserved it.
I was one of the few who saw it in theaters in 1993 here in Los Angeles. Also the line "I find the saxophone to be an incredibly distracting instrument" is by fare THE most British thing a person can say.
I didn't watch it in the theater during its initial run, but after having watched it numerous times (first on TV, then VHS, DVD, and Blu-ray) over the years I finally got to see it in the theater in November 2018 (25th anniversary screening at a local theater). I appreciate it on multiple levels, including how it delves into a romantic relationship in a way that none of the other Batman movies (animated or live-action) has, and the Andrea Beaumont/Phantasm character is fantastic, and Dana Delaney was excellent voicing her. One of my favorite parts of her performance is towards the end when Batman confronts her and she says "Look what they did to us, what we could have had. They had to pay." The way she said that, combined with the animation, was powerful.
I’m envious of you for seeing it on the big screen. I did some research and saw that ONE cinema in the UK did a 25th anniversary screening, but it was nowhere near where I live.
@@SerumLake Among the things I noticed was that the score by Shirley Walker was more prominent, and the opening theme with its choral chanting (which you mentioned) as they took us through Gotham City set the tone for the overall experience. There was a rainstorm so I walked a short distance to a brewpub (inside the same shopping mall) and enjoyed a couple of beers, which was a great way to cap off the evening.
Thank you so much for another fantastic review video and for reminding me once again why Batman Mask Of The Phantasm is the greatest DC animated movie of all time. 30 years later and still my all time favourite
Awkward if not weird on first hearing, excellent on rewatches. Brings into mind intros for Paranoia Agent, Puella Magi Madoka Magica, and maybe Memento.
I first saw Mask of The Phantasm on VHS sometime in 1998 or 99. I had already seen films such as Batman/Superman World's Finest and Sub-Zero, and while they were great, Phantasm was phenomenal. I've lost track into how many times I've seen it, but I imagine I've seen it more than any other Batman film at this point. While I didn't see the film in theaters in 1993, I did manage to see it in theaters for the 25th anniversary showing. Ironically, the day I saw the re-release was the day Stan Lee passed away.
I was... fifteen or sixteen, you can ABSOLUTELY believe I got my butt to the theater to see this thing, and loved it from the get-go. I immediately bought it on VHS as soon as it came out. It's one of my favorites. I'm so glad you did this video!
We owned this black box full of dvds and Mask Of The Phantasm was one of the many dvds inside it. If I remember it was 2006 when I first watched it as a kid and I basically stumbled upon it inside the box and the film was one of my first introductions to Batman himself alongside the Justice League show, Lego Batman Games, and the 2004 animated Batman show. I remember really enjoying the film and to this day it still reigns supreme as my favorite Batman film.
Looking back at the Siskel and Ebert review for Mask of the Phantasm, I find it sort of funny that Siskel's only complaint was he didn't like Mark Hamill as the Joker lol. Saying he personally preferred Jack Nicholson and Cesar Romero. That certainly aged poorly didn't it? lol
Not poorly, everyone has different tastes. If you want poorly, there's Jared Leto's Morbius being deemed better than the one from Spider-Man: The Animated Series.
As a kid I got to see this once it got to the dollar theater in my town. For those who didn't have a "dollar theater" in their area it is a theater to show movies that are at the very tail end of there run and you could go for only a dollar a person. I miss those days😊
The first time I watched the movie was, randomly, in normal TV airtime in a Christmas break. I had no idea this existed but it was clear to me that it was set up in btas continuity. Years later I watched it again multiple times when the DVD was released. It clearly is one of the best Batman movies and some of the best animation movies.

I just finished rewatching Batman Mask of The Phantasm tonight. Haven't seen it since 2022. For some reason it hit me way harder in the feels this time. This movie has aged beautifully & is easily the best animated Batman we'll ever get.
My story of discovering this film was when I was around 11/12. during the earlier days of Netflix, for context we were watching it on a Nintendo Wii, they had the four DCAU Batman movies. I watched the other three but I didn’t really have an interest to watch Mask of the Phantasm, I think because I didn’t think it had any recognizable villains I knew (I don’t think the description mentioned Joker). After they had been removed from Netflix, I got my mom to buy me a three back of Phantasm, Mystery of the Batwoman, and Subzero. But only for the other two. One night I decided, “well I own it, might as well watch it”, and I had my young mind blown away with how amazing this film was.
In My View, this Movie is like a Classic Noir Movie. You see the Hall Story has No Point of being like let say a Symbolic Movie like Batman 89s and the Dark Knight, it's not like a Typical Comic Book Superhero Movie with a Big Symbolic Climax, it's more about the Personal Journey and Experience of Batman. Also i the Fact that Batman Never Recovers his Name when being Blame. It's like the Hall Movie is more about Batman, and that's what make this Movie Perfect!
All end credits songs in the 90's were 80's ballads and all end credits songs in the 00's were 90's pop songs. And apparently the saxophone was the coolest instrument in the world during the late 80's/early 90's.

I saw Phantasm either on Cable or on VHS (most likely cable), I didn't go to the cinema much because we lived in a small town, I don't even know if Phantasm was released to that particular Cinema ehehe
Ah, I was actually gonna mention that Die Hard actor trivia bit bit from 9:34. Good thing you noticed. Must say, though, the DCAU used its celebrity guest voice actors well. Even Shaquille O'Neal did wonderfully in Static Shock in contrast to his Steel movie. "I Never Even Told You" is the definition of TV Tropes' "Narm Charm" to me. Ah, if only it got an Oscar nomination for Best Original Song. (And to me, I think the 90s were nicely liberating compared to the suspense of the 80s, the ultraconservatism of the 50s, and the unmentionable 60s and 70s. Praise be the decade that showed us the fall of the Soviet Union, even if said decade was homophobic and ingrained with a toxic "'Murica, F**K YEAH" mentality.)
I was lucky enough to see it in theaters, but unlucky enough that nobody got me the VHS after so I had only seen it the one time until I got the DVD in the late 2000s.
That's an interesting point you raise about "I never even told you". But, even if the lyric's theme fit the movie, the style of the music alone is enough to make it feel very out of place for me. It just takes me out of the movie. Just compare it to SubZero. An enjoyable movie, sure, but nowhere near close Phantasm. Yet, after an emotional ending, listen to the music once the credits start. It completely supports what we just saw in the movie and it even adds to the viewer's emotion with it. Phantasm sadly does the opposite.
Original theater goer, here. I watched the series from its premiere and knew I’d go see this in the theaters. It’s funny that this came out between Batman Returns and Batman Forever, considering parents hated Returns for being too dark and adult, and likely wouldn’t have cared for the violence in this film either. Time has proven to be its greatest ally and while I wish it had been successful, being alone in the theater to enjoy this by myself was honestly a perfect way to experience it.
I unfortunately didn't get to see Mask of the Phantasm until I was an adult and watched it here on TH-cam - while I was able to watch BTAS as a child growing up in the UK because my uncle had satellite TV, the spin-off films were never really advertised (at least not to me).
I had to wait until the VHS came out. I saw the film being advertised in comics for the better part of a year, but was so annoyed it didn’t come to UK cinemas
I personally have never seen the film fully but have had glimpses and reexperienced the climax in the strangest of ways with the LEGO adaptation of it in DC Supervillains. From what I've seen I can say the film's one of if not the best of Batman's catalog of greats.
I was only 3 when the movie came out, so I did not see it in theaters. I don't think I had even started watching BTAS yet at the time. I finally did see Mask of the Phantasm when it aired on Cartoon Network's Cartoon Theater block in the late 90s, and it's been a favorite of mine ever since. It's a shame the movie flopped in theaters, cuz it was easily in the same league as the Disney movies of the early 90s (Beauty and the Beast, Aladdin, the Lion King) and should've been just as successful as they were in theaters but apparently Warner Bros didn't put enough effort into promoting it. Oh well, at least it's been vindicated by history. Happy 30th Batman MOTP and RIP Kevin Conroy.
A fantastic film with the best Batman scene of all time, Bruce Wayne becomes Batman for the first time. I love this film. My Batman: Mask of the Phantasm is one of my most prized Batman items.
**Claims the beautiful saxophone in the original version of "I Never Even Told You" is "distracting"** **Commissions a cover with echoing ear-murdering screeches that (to me) make it impossible to enjoy. (She did well on the vocals, though)** Anyway I agree that "I Never Even Told You" is a wonderful ending song that really sums up Bruce and Andrea's relationship (In fact, I even like the things you apparently dislike about it. I don't think it sounds "dated" or particularly stuck in the 90s at all and the saxophone's one of the best parts). Whoever was dumping on it just doesn't know what's good. Even if the cover-song wasn't to my liking this was still a great tribute to what might be still the best Batman movie ever. As usual, you hit the nail on the head of what made this film great, and why this take on Batman is still so iconic. Your videos really remind me of just how much I miss the DCAU. For the record, I wanted to catch the movie in the theatres but wasn't able to. I finally got to watch it when Cartoon Network aired it as part of Toonami, but it was still awesome that way. (CN/Toonami even gave it a much cooler trailer than the theatrical release did and treated it as a special presentation). And, Happy Holidays!
“I find the saxophone to be a very distracting instrument.” So I take it that ya don’t like jazz? But anyway, great review. Definitely going to check out the commentary track next time I watch the movie.
Here's a comic storyline they could do (not very original ill admit...) but Bruce and Andrea did spend a night together before she disappeared, and she was shown to still be alive before the start of the beyond era, I'm curious if they'll try for an illegitimate child, albeit one Bruce actually performed for and wasn't drugged for and tricked into. (The life of Damion Wayne)
Sad that it bombed. Never like the movie when I was younger. Now though I change my mind. No joke but I've seen people who hate this movie cuz it bombed cuz apparently box office numbers = quality storytelling or that its a kids cartoon and many bs reasons to hate on B:MotP
While I do love this film, I got one complaint. Mask of the Phantasm is a terrible title. Just so awkward and clunky. There’s got to be a better title that they could have used. Still great film.
Oh man god that remix of the song is the worst thing I’ve ever heard. Also? The original song is great. Anyone who says otherwise is lying to themselves.

Saw in theaters at age 8. Loved it but appreciated more as an adult
I saw this in theater! Was with my best friend. My mom picked us up. I was 13
I REALLY WISHED I caught this movie when it was rereleased in theaters
If you're gonna go the way of bad jokes, bad puns, bad analogies... Own it. Stop apologizing for them. You've earned it.
Rip Shirley Walker 😢😢😢
See you all in 22 hours

@@SerumLake almost there. 3 more hours.

@@MommyMinty Hope you enjoyed it!
@@SerumLake I did indeed. Great work!
**Claims the beautiful saxophone in the original version of "I Never Even Told You" is "distracting"**
**Commissions a cover with echoing ear-murdering screeches that (to me) make it impossible to enjoy. (She did well on the vocals, though)**
Anyway I agree that "I Never Even Told You" is a wonderful ending song that really sums up Bruce and Andrea's relationship (In fact, I even like the things you apparently dislike about it.
I was taking a nap just now and woke up to that song playing. Omg it’s one of the worst sounding songs I ever heard.
I still have this movie on vhs
I 1st watched it in parts on TH-cam
Ah, just as Martin Scorsese intended movies to be consumed 😂
I want to voice Andi, she’s the character I know I can give incredible life to her for the new generation of fans
watched and loved mask of the phantasm
day one.
A man of taste 🫡
Love the cover! Great video as always
I'm glad that I got Batman The Complete Animated Series on blue-rey back in Christmas 2019.
“I find the saxophone to be a very distracting instrument.”
So I take it that ya don’t like jazz?
But anyway, great review. Definitely going to check out the commentary track next time I watch the movie.
I seen it on a streaming service😂
Better than not seeing it at all!!!
The best Batman film.
Great balance of Wayne / Batman, noir elements, a love story, great Joker reveal.
I would have saw it in theaters but I wasn't born until 6 years later😂
I don’t know what more could have been done with Andrea if she showed up one more time.
Awesome video but bruh wtf was up with that song rendition?
You made me appreciate the original song so thank you!
I have to be honest; the modified song kinda sounds like it was performed by Man-Bat.
They did originally want to call it Batman: Masks (although I’ve also seen it written down as Batman: Masques)
@@SerumLakethat’s def a better title. Short and to the point. And the French spelling gives it a little more character
Still didn’t do gill mason
VHS! 😂
i have you know i buy blu ray discs
The cover song turned out to be too experimental, I must say:)
:I D
Oh man god that remix of the song is the worst thing I’ve ever heard. Also? The original song is great. Anyone who says otherwise is lying to themselves.
Oof, that song ain’t it. I am sorry…
😢
@@SerumLakeAre you okay?
@@rainbowtoyfunrandomess1982 completely fine, yes!
@@SerumLake Oh okay, I'm just wondering. Also I hope you had a great Christmas.
That song is LIT 🎵❤🔥🎶
... I think you need to re-do the music.
The cover sucks
