Kevin Conroy and Mark Hamill will always be the best duo of Batman and Joker. Also, towards the end, you were wondering about Joker building that whole area just to fight. It's actually the fair that Bruce and Andrea went to when he saw the car that inspired the Batmobile. It was just run down and Joker repurposed it for himself.

Just fold in and do the Batman The Animated Series, Superman The Animated Series, Batman Beyond and Justice League / Justice League Unlimited series.
      There will be no regrets.
BTAS has a very distinct style, because all the backgrounds where drawn on black paper to really emulate the Tim Burton movie style (on which success this show was pitched).
Animation was outsourced to several Japanese and Korean animation studies. Some not so great, some the best out there. TMS (of the Lupin the IIIrd series fame) for instance did the animation for the shows opening and Sunrise (Patlabor, Escaflowne and the massive Gundam franchise) did several standout episodes in season 1.
The series conceived several popular character beats in the Batman lore: a tragic origins story for Dr. Freeze, Harvey Dent as a close friend to Bruce Wayne, the introduction of Inspector Montaya and concieved Harley Quinn almost exclusively as an homage to Arleen Sorkin, who then even got cast as Harley's VA.

This masterpiece cemented Kevin Conroy and Mark Hamill as the greatest Batman and Joker of all time. In my opinion nobody can top them. When you read a comic book you don't hear Bale, Pattinson, or Affleck you hear Kevin. He's the greatest actor to ever portray Batman. When he died it felt like Batman died. And as The Joker once said without Batman crime has no punchline. Kevin Conroy is deeply missed his Batman was the most human of all. Thank you Kevin.

This movie is in the continuity of the TV show. Same staff animation and everything. It takes place in between season 1 and 2. So since you watched this it's very much recommended to completely dive into the show, and have fun.
It should be noted ahead of time that the streaming order of the TV show is different form the broadcast order. It won't matter much for a lot of episodes (since it's so episodic in nature), but sometimes a lot of weird things happen while watching them out of order. Sometimes part 1s and 2s of episodes are split, or the debut episode of a character is later so it'll look weird for a first time watcher. "Wait this is their debut episode? This sure was a weird way to introduce them." "That's because it's not. They debuted in a completely different episode." Stuff like that will happen when watching them out of order. It's best to look up a broadcast list just for the sake of saving a headache.

There's a story to the magic behind Kevin Conroy's iconic portrayal of Bruce and Batman. He wrote a free comic about it in detail, but, long story short... he was a closeted gay man in 90's Hollywood. One can imagine the sort of life he had to have led up until that point, what he'd been through, some of which he goes into. But he had a very, very good idea of just what it was like to truly live two lives, to have a mask you present to the world that everyone believes to be the real thing. He took inspiration from the anger and shame of his life and with it made the definitive Batman. No one has ever played the two sides of the character as well as him before or since.

I am old. Born in 64 I became a Batman fan at the age of 2. In my 2 year old birthday pictures I am dressed in a full Batman Outfit while holding a Batman Cup in one hand and a Batmobile toy car in the other. I hated the 1989 Batman movie and I was the first person in line to see it in June/89. Mask of the Phantasm is the best Batman movie ever made! And most comic-book accurate. Batman the Animated Series (1992-95) the first season 92-93, which is 50 episodes, is the best Batman and comic-book accurate stuff you can ever watch. Back in 92 I was 28 and on Friday nights my friends and I would go out for dinner then Bowling or play Pool or just get drunk at the Pub. After we were done all that 8 of us, 4 guys and our girlfriends & Wifes would go back to someone's place and watch the 5 episodes from the week. We all couldn't believe how Adult and well written & animated it was. Mask of the Phantasm was released on Dec/25/1993. The greatest movie release day for me ever because Tombstone came out that day too.

This film is what convinced me that Kevin Conroy (May He Rest In Peace😢) is the best actor to ever play The Dark Knight. To this day the opening theme composed by the late great Shirley Walker chills me to the core. It is truly the music that embodies Batman for me, haunting, intimidating, powerful, and especially hopeful.
The 2 best scenes in the movie are when Bruce goes to his parents grave and apologizes for possibly giving up his crusade of fighting crime to have a normal life with Andrea, that scene was so powerful that the director actually went into the recording booth to see if Kevin was okay because it took a lot out of him.
And the other is when Andrea leaves him and decides to become Batman. When he puts on the mask and turns around Alfred is horrified, not just because of how intimidating he looks but because he is seeing the boy he helped raise become a monster, a monster for good but still a monster in his eyes.

Another vote for the animated series here. And fun fact, this movie is in continuity with the animated series, having the same animation style, crew, and voice talent, as well as Kevin and Mark's first ever performances in these roles. But, I recommend watching it in production order (DVD order), which Max doesn't have it in.
Also regarding the story, as you probably picked up, it's completely original. The Joker's the only non original villain in the film, but many people regard this as the greatest Batman animated movie of all time. It's even been spoken of positively by Robert Pattinson, who was Batman in the newest movie. Glad you've discovered it.

Fun fact, if you look around the batcave in Arkham Origins you can see some letters sent to Bruce by Andrea Beaumont.

Why not Central City? Star City? Bludhaven?
Oh yeah, Mark Hamill, the BEST Joker. Even in DCUO.

Have commented this on a previous video; but please, please 🙏🙏check out Batman: The Dark Knight returns, part 1 and 2. When you have a chance.. And a bonus, Superman/Batman: Public enemies. Those are two of my favorite films involving Batman.
The Dark Knight returns is an adaptation of Frank Miller's novel of the same name. It is a much more older Batman.
The other one is Batman and superman being best buddies and teaming up lol. If you loved Mask of the phantasm, and red hood, I'm sure you would love those. Would absolutely love to see your take on them!

I would recommend The Dark Knight Returns Part 1 and 2, Batman Year One, Assault on Arkham, Batman Gotham Knight which is really underrated. Those are the best Batman centric ones which anyone can watch without that much context.
I would recommend the two Batman Superman Animated movies Public Enemies and Apocalypse those are pretty good as well as Justice League Doom and Crisis on two earths. These are films which feature other characters than just Batman but they have some great Batman moments.

Other than the ones already requested haha... if you want a fun Halloween watch later down the line I recommend Batman vs Dracula. Goofy but surprisingly dark for the audience it was aimed at. Don't thiiiink you need any knowledge of the series it comes from, if memory serves. Incredibly unique art design too. And also my favorite Alfred haha.
So glad you enjoyed this though! Very happy you didn't have a clue about the big twist either. Fantastic way to get into the animated series!

This was all the same team that did the animated TV series. The show was so well-regarded that they did this as basically an extended episode / mini-movie. So if you like the art style, the actors, the music, etc. then you'll like the show too.
Btw the setting for the fight scenes wasn't something Joker built, it was the run-down location of an old Gotham Expo about the future, much like a World's Fair.

    recommendation time!
    1. The Dark Knight Returns part 1 and 2. A seminal works that has influenced countless comics media since the story was written, a personal favorite.
    2. Batman: Assault on Arkham. The Suicide Squad film we deserved (until we got the good suicide squad film by James Gunn).
    3. Batman Year One. One of the finest retellings of Batman's first year fighting crime. Another seminal piece whose influence on the comics medium cannot be understated.
    4. Justice League: Doom. A Justice League story with a heavy focus on Batman, portraying just how dangerous he really is.
    5. Superman/Batman: Public Enemies. Within the cultural consciousness I'd argue that the predominant image people envision is Batman and Superman at each others throats (Batman vs Superman, Injustice etc.) but in actuality Supes and Bats are more often than not, best friends and more people need to see that. I want more of that. This film does a great job of illustrating that so I recommend.
Forgive the long winded post. I'm a huge Batman fan and when someone asks for Batman animated film recommendations I'm gonna recommend like I've never recommended before 😁

I don’t think so. Red Hood to me was “whatever,” and Phantasm I’m split on. For various reasons, I’m all over the place on it. Too much of a romance subplot (I just wanted to watch Batman in action), and the movie has way too many flashbacks. I’m a writer/screenwriter. I was taught that it’s a big no-no to have flashbacks. You either don’t have them and put everything in chronological order, or you use them very sparingly and have maybe one or two flashbacks at the most. Phantasm overused flashbacks. Also, the marketing heavily marketed Batman vs. Phantasm. Instead, it’s once again Batman vs. Joker. I’ve never been big on Joker either. So that ruins things more. Joker WAS in the marketing, but they made it seem like he was going to have a small/minor role. Nope. Joker is the main villain again. I wish DC and WB would get away from Joker for a while. He is way too overused. And people like to argue that “he’s Batman’s well known villain.” Yeah, well, maybe if they have other Batman villains a chance, maybe people will get to know them and stuff. But yeah. I’ve always been split on Mask Of The Phantasm. So I can’t say or agree that it’s one of the best animated Batman movies. I’d probably give it a B or C.

I just discovered your channel. And binged all of your Batman reactions! I love your passion for Batman and can't wait to watch you react to The Animated Series and hope you end up reacting to the entire DCAU! It's the best DC has to offer outside of the comics and my favorite versions of like 90% of the DC characters except Green Lantern. I love their version of John Stewart! He's amazing but the Green Lantern Corps. as a whole is kinda lacking in the DCAU, but that's literally my only critique. Everything else about the DCAU is practically perfect! Anyways, I wish you well and hope you have a kickass day!

My favorite factoid about this movie and Batman the Animated Series is the unique animation style they chose by animating on black paper with white stencil to make all the blacks and dark colors deeper and more saturated which was unheard of at the time. It really sells the neo-noir gothic atmosphere better than any other animated Batman medium.
