Honestly - I am in support of normal mode failing the three wheel test. I don’t want in normal circumstances for the traction control to clamp down on the brakes aggressively. I’d much prefer the option of going into trail mode intentionally.

Great review. I had no doubt that it would perform well. Tires were not the greatest for the conditions but definitely a big difference when switching modes.
I totally agree! We use the Haida HD828 6ply all season tires on our 2010 Honda Pilot touring and they work great in the summer and winter. And are very cost-effective.
The trailsport does have additional goodies that make it more adept off-road. As you pointed out, first and foremost, its tires. The Trailsport also has additional programming that proportions torque side to side on the front more agressively instead of just the rear. Finally, an inch of additional clearance might not be a lot, but off-road every inch counts. Aside from its limited approach angles, the Trailsport is as good as a crossover gets to being a bona-fide off-road SUV.
As someone who lives in BC, i wish a crossover was enough for all of our trailheads 😅 our forest roads erode quick once they're deactivated (which is the general way trailheads are made, old logging roads are used to access a new area and trails get made from them)

Sure it is no where near to a 4Runner / GX460 4wd system, but for a AWD crossover it is more than adequate in my opinion. If you put a real aggressive traction system like Atrac you would potentially damage components on a Pilot. Even with current system you get overheating which was show on TFL and some other channels with the iVTM system. Just look under and compare the size difference. That's why I say what you have in Pilot is very very adequate for its class.
Id like to test the 4runner awd system because in my past experiences the rav4 v6 system sucked. I was constantly slipping in the rain and snow. Where as my mom’s 2009 pilot never slipped on me. Its probably the best awd system ive used. Better than my 2015 grand cherokee limited.
Need to slip test all AWD and 4WDs!

Thanks for the very useful review! I was surprised it did not seem to do as good on the rollers as previous models, particularly the Trail model Must be different programming even when using trail and sand mode I guess? It did surprisingly good in the trenches for the non trail model, once you put it into trail mode. But, I was wishing you had also tried it in Sand mode, just to see what differences there might be. But, I enjoyed it!

i Love Honda but at this price range you have the legendary 4runner build on a frame . 65000$ + tx in Quebec Canada is like 74000$ / 54000 us$ . thats alot of crap money for a honda.
Pretty impressive in trail mode. Better than the subarus, but how much ground clearance does it have?
I wouldn’t say it’s better than Subaru Wilderness models. X-Mode helps out quite a bit.

At 12 passenger van? Probably nobody is cross-shopping that vehicle with the Pillot. Tundra, Land Cruiser, and Wrangler don't seat 6.
Interesting mix of choices all for around the same price. But they will all come with less features than the Pilot.

Two things. 1, Less Alex. Keep him behind the camera please. 2, These videos are why I keep finding these "soft roaders" clogging up the trails. They're fine for inclement weather, but they are NOT offroaders.

guys, take new ford explorer to such tests. but not hybrid version, just regular petrol. they should have imroved AWD systems
