Sometimes that's the best part. If we only did totally necessary things all cars would be 90s corollas.

But, if the sounds do nothing for performance, I think it's silly. I'd rather hear the sound of the electric motor. Matt Farah was impressed, liking it on track more than a Porsche Taycan. He thinks sound and the shifting helps one recognize speed coming into curves on the track, which makes sense to me, though I don't go to the track. I just don't want my performance car, even if I never go to the track, big and up in the air like that.

@@lawrencesiskind3554 EVs are going to be "big" by definition, because they have such a heavy battery pack. As companies innovate and new technologies come into play in the next 10 or 15 years, you will see the possibility of small roadster EVs that are affordable and have 400 mile range. But this is the challenge of people and companies that like to be "first movers." You have to work within the constraints of current technology and platforms.

Perfectly agree in that sense, at least Hyundai’s trying new things around as explorer spending a lot of money investing in stuff like this, look at some Japanese companies like Honda and Nissan, had their glorious times. But stuck in the past still not investing much on new things hence why they are failing ( cheap yen doesnt help either)

Fenton you should drive one of the RWD ioniq 6 models through the canyons. My wife bought one and I decided to just test it out. That car is hilarious. It's so heavy that you can basically drift every corner without trying, and the torque just pulls you out on exit. We were laughing the entire time.
Honestly the Hyundai EVs are way more fun than they seem even on the stock 20s. Though I would still prefer driving a proper sports car through there.
Rich Rebuilds just did an EV honda beat build and that makes me curious on how an EV Miata would do.

And it can only improve from here, really.

It was brilliant. Actually thinking of buying one. We are full blown petrolheads (S2K, Supra MKV & IV, gtr 32, Evo 9... In our group) and we where ALL blown away. We wanted it to fail, but it didn't. I've tracked most of my cars, most recently my EV6 GT (the predecessor to this), and I think they're being too harsh. Suffice to say the track instructor was shocked at how well it performed when he drove it, and the brakes were more than enough, and hardly even got hot, as In I could touch them with my bare hands right after a session (meanwhile my stage 2 MK7 GTI would have thoroughly smokey and toasted brakes after a session). And I was lapping everybody by miles, including base C8 corvettes (though admittedly that guy drove like a granny). The 200 mile range should be an absolute non-issue for anybody with less than a 3 digit commute. Level 1 charging has been more than enough for my purposes. Build quality has been great, and drives great around town and my passengers always give me compliments. The ioniq 5N should be even more refined than the EV6 in theory.
      Tl;DR just buy it.

We're pretty used to going to Spa / Nürburgring so I think we actually have a decent idea of how the 5N stacks up against our other cars.

I bought my Ionic 5N a month ago and LOVE IT. Not only can it smoke any muscle car in my town, but it can also haul my family of 5, our dog and our luggage. My wife drives the car as a family car in eco mode, while I like to change the setting to Sport and use the paddle shifters and Sound modes. Here in California, where gas is $6.00 per gallon, we save a ton of money on fuel and time, since we plug it in at home and let it charge during the non-peak hours. Where it costs us over $120.00 to fill up our Audi Q7, it costs us around $8.00 to charge the batteries from 20% to 80%. Our average mileage gives us somewhere near 228 miles for a full charge, which is way more than we need on a daily basis. The Ionic 5N looks great and performs like a hot rod. Plus no more oil changes, radiator flushes, smog tests, transmission services, tailpipe emissions and other expensive repairs. Electric cars are the future and it is a good thing.

I kinda agree with Jack, modern cars have fake noises anyway, but Hyundai is doing what even BMW, Mercedes, and Audi/VW are not doing with their cars, they are trying to get the engagement back into driving. This is really fun and silly and it is sorely missing in so many modern cars. Even gasoline cars. I am also not in the age bracket that can afford a $70,000 vehicle, but if this tech comes to a hatchback Elantra/i30N in a few years that will be awesome for the market. With VW removing the manual in the GTI, I might as well go electric for my next car, at least now I know at least Hyundai is focused on fun.

A rare miss for me. Is there any other EV under 100K that can even do a track day totally stock? Is there a more fun EV under 100K?
They complain about the weight and obviously it's heavy, but an X3 M40i or X3M (natural ICE competitors in form factor and price) are ~4300-4500 lbs. Why not compare it to those cars? Or, hell - compare it to other EVs?
Like, yeah - for a track day car something like a Supra or M2 is going to be better than a 4800 lb. first-get Hyundai SUV. "But Hyundai markets this car as track ready!" ... so does every brand that builds a high-performance SUV. And yet most people use these cars to drive to work and get groceries and maybe go out every once in a while and enjoy a backroad or track day.
I guess I feel like there's no world in which they'd expect an X3M to drive on track like an M2, because they know the X3 will mostly be used to drive around town. Because it's an SUV. But here they seem frustrated that the 5 N is not a lightweight sports car.

I think the big disconnect between EV’s and enthusiasts is that many enthusiasts are sensitive to the degree to which the driving experience is digitally mediated. The thicker the layer of digital mediation, the less fun the car is, no matter the acceleration figures. It’s not about just having a steering wheel in front of you and pressing a pedal to go fast. It’s about interacting with and being directly engaged with a machine in an essential way. Too many screens are a persistent reminder of the digitally mediated layer. Synthetic sounds are another reminder. And every intervention which occurs between your hands and feet to disguise or control the weight of the vehicle are constant reminders that you’re a customer and not an owner, in a sense. And, frankly, every variable, adjustable setting, and every drive mode dilutes the character of a car. If it can be whatever you want it to be at the push of a button, then there’s less of an innate non-fungible character to connect to, and there’s less of a sense of enjoying a car which has been made “for you.”
A lot of contemporary cars suffer from this, but it’s most pronounced with EV’s these days.

The reference to Clarkson was spot on, this is Mark, he didn't want to like this vehicle from the start, and he doesn't get the reasoning behind the car , I'm on Jacks side, Hyundai could have released this with none of the gimmicks but then it would just be like every other EV with some extra aero stuff and nobody would be talking about it, all the user software tweaks are so the driver can get involved in what the car is doing.
I think Hyundai have done a great job of not only making it look great but making it different to every other boring EV they have made it fun and engaging, I didn't realise Toyota have made an EV Camry because that's what Mark sounds like he is driving on a daily.
Jack has more of an understanding of this car, I would have like to see him take it around the track as he is a much better driver than Mark and could have appreciated what Hyundai have achieved, and made it perform much better than Camry man, sure it's not perfect but what car is ?

      @genericasian 3 หลายเดือนก่อน +10

On multiple occasions, Clarkson would often lament that an amazing car he drove didn't feel special, or interesting, or was too fast, or try to kill him. For those reasons, he wouldn't like an otherwise technically amazing car. Hammond's response was "so the car would be better if it were worse." Jeremy's response was always an enthusiastic "YES!"
This is how I feel about the I5N. All of the gimmicks don't make the car faster. The simulated shifting slows the car down (if you're just aiming for 0-60 times) because they emulate the inherent weakness of ICE compared to electric. The sounds are silly and dumb. The fact that you can bang off the Rev limiter, lug the "engine", and get caught in the wrong gear are all silly. But they are executed so well that if you didn't tell someone, they might genuinely believe they were driving an ICE vehicle.
All of the stupid stuff might give the car personality and make it interesting. In a sea of EVs that all sound and drive the same, this one could be just a little better because it's worse.

Step 2: Take the meticulously sourced induction and exhaust audio, torque curves, gauge clusters, etc from the game with new partnership.
Step 3: Enjoy your irl sim racing rig that is otherwise practical and usable.
Imagine having a LFA DLC or a 458 Speciale expansion pack. I'm curious if going the Forza route would remove legal barriers to emulate sounds from other manufacturers because other than WRC, Hyundai doesn't really have their own history of impressive sounding cars to choose from. There are almost no road cars that you can take to 10/10ths on a track in bone stock form and not be frustrated or disappointed in something. The fake gears are to lend sense of drama if you are on a back road. If you want an EV that also has some of the driving engagement you get from an enthusiasts gas powered car, this is how you do it and people will be willing to pay for it.

It seems like this is one of the rare occurrences where Jack's and Mark's opinions don't align. However, based on my short test drive experience with this car, I would side with Jack, especially regarding the fake sound. IMO the artificial sound in the loniq 5N felt much better than in any other EVs l've driven, as it projects sound from both the front hood and the rear (where the engine and exhaust would be located), which I think was the key to creating a somewhat realistic sound effect. Like how Jack mentions in 16:07, considering how some performance cars nowadays add horrible sounding fake noises anyways, the noise that the Ioniq 5N made honestly wasn’t really that bad at all…
Sure I see how an EV mimicking an ICE car may not be the ultimate solution for making EVs more fun, I would say it was an intriguing enough approach that deserves credit. I though agree on Mark that the price point of the Ioniq 5N is the biggest hurdle for the vehicle - not because the car is objectively expensive for its performance, but there are so many great ICE options for the money, and is a far reach for the typical hot hatch buyers who would most likely be interested in one of these.

I have waited for YEARS for the right EV to come along and I've had my Ioniq 5N for three months now - it is super fun to drive and an incredibly versatile daily driver. L2 charging is a breeze and my electric bill went up by a mere $70 a month. Does one feel the weight on full tilt on the brakes? Absolutely, and it's kind of astonishing what the combinded regen and disc/friction brakes achieve when you learn to trust the engineering behind the system! I have noticed a few reviewers just don't want to like this car right off the bat, due to some boxed-in and clearly biased beliefs and it shows in their videos. I can only imagine the conversations when Henry Ford brought the Model A to market "we don't need a faster horse". Well... fact of the matter is - we have to do something collectively to reduce emissions and electric cars are clearly a step into the right direction.
One very fact that all reviewers fail to recognize - this car's systems all stay cool under any circumstance. I don't think I have seen the rear motor beyond 165°F and the battery beyond 95°F on full tilt - it's a heavy 600 HP car and the brakes stay cool - with that, they work. In comparison, my previous tuned Elantra N consistently got oil temperatures of 241°F and the brakes boiled to the point of non-braking... Talk about efficiency. This car is fun. Period.

    Good debate guys :-)
I've had my significantly modified (sleeper) BMW 3-Series Touring for ten years, and it's easily last for a further ten. It's very well set up, engaging, and (for my needs) just the right size. There's no pressing need for me to replace it, except I'm becoming increasingly tired of maintenance (oil changes, transmission fluid changes, diff oil changes, etc), and the ZF transmission not giving a sense of immediate drive (torque converter).
The Ionic 5N is currently the only, and I do mean the ONLY, EV that would make me switch from ICE. In overall terms, and the engineering that's evident beneath the skin, I think Hyundai has created an excellent package.

This review is odd and passive aggressive in some ways. It always seems like Mark and Jack look down on Hyundai overall (barring the Elantra N), making jokes about the E-GMP platform etc. I haven’t seen them do this with other manufacturers. They spent so much time in the engineering of the 5N, but very little time setting up the car for track use and criticized it as being unruly around the corners. I’ve driven this car many times around the track, and it is one of the most predictable EV to drive around corners if you set it correctly. Only Taycan compete as a track EV (haven’t driven the Rimac). I can’t think of one reviewer, out of dozens, who claimed the 5N is unruly around corners. Mark went into this review with a strong bias of what an EV should be, a quite daily commuter rather than taking the 5N for its intended purpose, a fun trackable EV that’s bringing back the joy of ICE driving. Sure the sound is artificial when you rev it while parked, but once you start shifting through the fake gears while driving, your brain becomes pretty convinced it has real gears and sound. Their conclusion is you can get a BMW or Audi ICE car for more fun, but they fail to mention those cars are not practical daily drivers and lack space for 5 adults and luggage. There is no EV or ICE SUV/CUV that competes with the 5N in this price range.

The Ioniq 5 isn’t for me either but I sure appreciate that Hyundai is still making an effort to make products for enthusiasts and to make EV’s more fun.
