  • My VW Maxi van converted over 2 months.
    Feb/March 2017.
    Since I've done this I've removed the 3 way fridge and fitted new shelves/unit in it's place. My new coolbox (Waeco CF26) will fit by the bulkhead.
    An updated video (June 2018) of the Van with all of my modifications etc. can be found here...

    Awesome conversion, given me some great ideas sure they won't look as good as yours! Make sure your CO 2 detector is at head level or below, as the gas rises from the floor, I just found that out myself!

    Nice job as a boat owner just think it's worth pointing out ideally the gas should be in a sealed box vented low down to the outside as leaking propane lays on the floor and used to be a major fire hazard in yachts until they changed the regs to exterior venting .

    I wouldn't do carpet on the floor. Gets dirty, wet, and mouldy in no time if you use the van a lot.
    And I'd favor one cooktop burner and a basin for washing and rinsing stuff. I'd be interested to know how often you use 2 burners at the same time.
    And LEDs are so efficient now, two would suffice. A smaller one for reading in bed would be a plus.
    I've got mixed feelings about LPG bottles left open in the living area. I know of 4 vans that have burned to the ground in the last 40 years, and all of them were due to faulty bottle fittings and lines. All I can say is use the best fittings and lines money can buy....not cheap Chinese stuff.
    Where I come from, I'd favor an external hot water shower.

      Hi, A Mate who does electronic car repairs helped me with the split charger, but the kits do come with instructions. I've got 2 leisure batteries in parallel, both 110ah. They would last about 3 to 4 days without a charge, I've since fitted a solar panel, which is brilliant (Although I've not had chance to appreciate it since lockdown)

Thanks for the inspiration, how tall are you? and I am thinking if I need to insulate the van? I live in Mexico and Baja gets hot, so around here, winthers can be 40F-50F for a low and during summer, lows only get to 60's F and in the desert even higher, so until I do the Mexico Alaska trip, I think it is not necessary. @@damasovi_travels1244 I'm 5ft 8inches. Insulation works to keep heat out as well. But you would need a skylight like mine, and windows that open. (which I haven't got) and a fan. What is the black thing in the middle of the ceiling? is it a vent? I have been looking for smaller vent fans.

    • @55glencoe
      @55glencoe  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      It's a vent, it's just the wind that spins it. It was already fitted when I bought it. Most ex British Gas vans have them.

    Is this a ex British Gas van? I see lots are available second hand but you have to deconstruct the interior racking.

    • @55glencoe
      @55glencoe  6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Yes an ex-BG van. I bought it from a dealer, so all the racking was already removed

    nice van! great inspiration :) I just want to point out that the carbon monoxide detector needs to be closer to the floor, as co2 is heavier than oxygen! potentially you would be dead before the alarm went off.. not a nice way to end your camping trip!

    • @55glencoe
      @55glencoe  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Even Hansen Thanks, moved it lower now.

    • @55glencoe

      @timogronroos4642 5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Based on this web page, good place for CO alarm would be the hight of mouth, so bed level. Gas is more heavy than oxygen, so the gas alarm should be on floor level.

    Do not use loft insulation unless you bag it and seal it!! It maintains moisture and will rot your van out from the inside

  • @itsmiffy3424
