Sometimes you think you're doing what's best for your bike by taking it to a trusted mechanic. But this is where you realize that if something is done by a person, there is always room for human error. This beautiful bike came in from out of town, before it is placed on the Dyno, everything was inspected!!! Unfortunately, the chain seem secure, but it was not. Something we did not realize until after moving it over 100 mph! Everyone in this video is OK and fortunately it happened in a secure location instead of on the streets!

You reminded me of my first performance upgrades. I had a Sears go kart in 1972 with a Tecumseh 3 1/2 HP. I swapped the muffler with a straight plumbing pipe and swapped the spring on the throttle with a piece of coat hanger wire. Those were days of fun. In a church parking lot a police officer drove in and I asked him if he would measure my speed with his radar and he did! I thought it would do 60 (I was nine). After passing by a couple times he reported 24 mph. lol
Once I was doing 160kmph on my ZX6R and suddenly lost acceleration. The chain broke, cracked the rear fenders and flew right into the air. After realizing what happened, and what could have happened, I felt so lucky and relieved. Fortunately I was riding in a group.
Had a chain snap on a racing cart I was tuning once and it missed my head by less than a inch, realized immediately that it probably would have been the last thing I heard before my skull was ripped apart and everything scrambled. Glad that everyone recovered but I must admit it left a bit of a mark that can creep back in at times questioning the amount of confidence in the workmanship as well as parts structural integrity. Remember guys, Have fun and always Be Safe

@jacesimmons6374 You can't see the chain with any detail. The bike is stretched aka longer chain. That makes it a safe assumption that the chain was improperly riveted together or a cheap China chain with clip master link. A Japanese chain with a proper matching rivet master link, doesn't fail.
Always thought that dinoing your car or motorcycle only tears it up, This video proves me right, I say as long as you're riding or driving faster than you can walk there's no reason to prove nothing,
You're probably gonna need a couple repair links on that chain. You can pick them up at Tractor Supply, same place you got the chain. The rest should buff out.
I had a kz650 built to about 900. Heads carbs cam. King of the valley 2 years in a row. Hated riding on the street, too dangerous. So took it to the drag strip. At the end of strip, no lights and it turns to gravel. Two years was enough. I ran out of drag strip with it. Sold it. They guy who bought it wrecked it 8 months later
Dont just trust the customer when he or she says its all good. There is a handful of things you gotta check on the bike before it hits the dyno. Engine oil level, coolant level, chain slack and condition are some 👍 turned guys away before and they're mad but beats having something like this happen.
How could you tell from this clip that they did not check things before putting it on the dyno? The guys in the vid might even be the owner. Its not the first time things break on a tuned bike or car even if it is in mint condition when getting on the dyno. Only thing we can learn from this video is to have a chain guard next time.
Back in the day our racing karts run engines with a rotary valve intake, meaning the carb was on the side instead of the front unlike the reed intake. One time the chain broke off and cut the carb's neck clean, I found the carb hanging on the side from the fuel line and throttle cable. I'm just happy the chain guard is there doing it's job, it's an important one, it's not just for picking up the grime.
Had a chain come off on the exit of a corner during a road race in the late 80s. I was hard on the gas when it came apart. After getting the bike back to the pits, we found the chain marks all the way down the bottom of the tail section/seat support. One inch to the left and it would have taken out the back of my leg.
@ElonMuskX I had a GS650T that lost a cam bushing cap bolt into the timing chain channel. It did lock up and that's how I got ownership of it. The rider had been drunk and speeding when it happened. It sat for 9 years before I rebuilt the engine and enjoyed its performance with what I could salvage of the downpipes of the header. I didn't keep it long. Someone offered me $1200 for it and all I had into it was a gasket set, oil, and a battery.

Chains have a wear limit, and also have a compound power, torque, weight, and resistance limit (Power & Torque and Work Load) strapping the wheel down on a dyno takes the traction off of the weak link list and if your primary drive is solid the chain takes over

Unbelievable! 😮 The first thing I thought was a pushrod through the engine block. This exactly looks like my lawnmower did and the whole corner piece of the block has vanished. On the other hand, thank God everyone was okay. Being a "Jill of all trades" and an RN, any exploding metal is a little grenade going off. This could have been deadly. What if it wasn't the chain and something thicker/heavier? That is why the Dyno machines at bike rallies have a taped off area with signs. Very dangerous.
Clip style or rivited, makes ZERO difference in this situation. The most common cause of drive chain breakage IS metal failure. The usual culprit being a simple single drop of battery acid on one side plate. It causes a change in the tensile strength or temper of the steel and the link becomes soft. A chain is only as strong as its weakest link. Hth.
