    Hey brother u explained everything perfectly, but I have a question. does the bilstien 5160 needs to be serviced like the fox shocks like every 30k to 50k? And how durable are they compared to fox?

    Great video.. what are your thoughts on the dust cover on shocks? Some people remove the rubber/plastic citing concerns with retaining dirt or moisture.

    • @ShockSurplus
      @ShockSurplus  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Personally on our rigs, we do not run any boots of any sorts. We do find that having a boot does make it more difficult to keep simple cleaning maintenance on the shocks much more difficult. The boot will still trap various partials which is hard to remove without removing the actual boot itself.

    What about as far as hauling low to heavy trailer or goosenecks, will the reservoir shocks help or make any difference compared to the singular tubed shocks?

    • @ShockSurplus
      @ShockSurplus  8 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Not really. The main benefit of an external reservoir is for additional heat dissipation, however if you are just towing heavy on the road, your shocks probably are not getting hot. Or at the very least a good monotube shock without a reservoir would not get hot enough to fade.

    i have a 2022 2500 AT4 that was has the Detroit Wreckers wheel lift system on there (a lot of weight in the rear) they installed fox shocks already when the system was installed. However for the front i was wondering if a reservoir was going to be the way to go to make the ride more comfortable, or what? I do drive fast when not towing, and occasionally go off road depending on the situation

    • @ShockSurplus
      @ShockSurplus  ปีที่แล้ว

      The reservoir helps with heat dissipation. So when the shocks are cycling quickly, this would help keep it cooler. It'll still get warm but it won't as warm or hot. The comfort is going to be about the same.

    Where do you draw the line between a remote and a higher end monotube? Not bilsteins, like a 2.5 or ome mt64.
    I do forest roads at reasonably higher speeds, but not desert whoops and jumps. Ive killed a few 5100s and im over replacing them. Do i bite the bullet on 2.5 remotes or go the in-between like the mt64 or fox/Elka/icon 2.5? Difference of almost 2k here in Canada. (3k vs 5k)

    • @ShockSurplus
      @ShockSurplus  3 หลายเดือนก่อน

      If you are blowing up 2.0s, you might still be at the limit of an IFP monotube 2.5. If you can swing it, an external reservoir is probably up your alley. Truthfully although the stuff out in the desert looks more extreme, the washboard surfaces of most forest roads will often get shocks hotter as they are only using a small percentage of their travel, but cycling at much more rapid rates.

    For a 4runner w/KDSS I am bringing the car to Puerto Vallarta where I'll be going up and down steep wet cobblestone roads. I was recommended the Eibach reservoir shocks. On your website KDSS isn't on the Eibach as compatible. Is there a reason or would you recommend something else?

    • @ShockSurplus
      @ShockSurplus  5 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      They fit the same on KDSS and non KDSS models so there is nothing to worry about there. The only reason sometimes you will see fitment vary on KDSS and Non KDSS models is front reservoir placement or lift settings to avoid lean on non KDSS models. The Eibachs 2.0 coilovers are a threaded body so you have more than enough finite adjustment to get it level side to side, and they do not have external reservoirs.

    Went with Dobinsons 3way adjustable MRR's on the 4runner.
    I think Dobinsons are highly under-rated. Additionally, great (long) service life before a rebuild with such an advanced system!

    Having a difficult time deciding what to go with. I have a 22 4wd F150 that I use as a daily driver. Usually only go off trail 1-2x a month to camp in SoCal and NorCal. I do spend a lot of time driving up and down mountains during the winter for snowboarding. Thoughts on whether getting reservoirs is worth it? Looking at the either the Eibach stage 2 lift or 2R which is about a $240 difference.

    • @ShockSurplus
      @ShockSurplus  4 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      From the sounds of things, your shocks will not even get warm let alone hot enough to show any amount of fade, so you can skip the reservoir for its intended purpose, but Eibach does use a little more linear valving on their PTR resi shocks, so they are a touch more comfortable at least off road. You likely will feel little difference on the road though.

    I have an 86 blazer with a 6" lift. In your opinion would upgrading from stock to any type of reservoir shock make a big enough difference in ride quality to justify spending the money? Right now the ride is very stiff and hops on bumps

    • @sorryociffer
      @sorryociffer ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I’d say it depends on if your ride is hard because of shocks you have now or if your truck is sprung hard. If it’s the shocks, they may help, if it’s because of the springs, probably not.

    • @ShockSurplus
      @ShockSurplus  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Reservoir shocks often are tuned the same or quite similar to their IFP Monotube counterparts so you probably will not see much difference in normal ride quality. The main benefit of an external reservoir design is their increased cooling capacity to keep the shocks more consistent, so if you drive it really hard for extended periods off road, you they will be far less likely to fade. I am sure a good shock, reservoir or otherwise, will help, but if the rig is hopping over bumps, there is a good chance the springs are too stiff and are causing most of the issues.

    Is it ok to remove and leave off the rubber boot on the 5100? Are they needed to prevent wear? I think they look better without the boots

    • @ShockSurplus
      @ShockSurplus  ปีที่แล้ว

      they're not necessary, it does help prevent some debri from hitting the shaft - which is the main concern. The wiper seal on the Bilstein is really nice and keeps dirt out of the shock, but pitting on the shaft from rock hits is the main concern for the most part.
