  • President Recep Tayyip Erdogan is capping a three-nation tour of Africa with Nigeria where the hard bargaining is about much more than commercial deals. After the success of Turkish-made drones in the war in Nagorno-Karabakh, arms sales are certainly in the mix. furthermore, we will ask about drone diplomacy and Erdogan's bid to take custody of Nigerian schools and universities run by the rival Gulenist movement, accused of orchestrating the failed 2016 coup in Turkey.

Er, Erdogan doesn't have the right to lay claim to the name 'Turkey' or 'Turkish' as if, somehow, it's a regime-owned trademark. If a University has the name 'Turkish' in it, it doesn't and shouldn't signify that somehow it's representative of the Turkish government.
There are many schools & Unis with 'British' or 'American' or 'Francais' in their name throughout Africa, but nobody really thinks they are therefore representing those foreign governments, that's ridiculous. It speaks volumes about Erdogan's mindset and how he decides to use leverage. He sees Gulen & Gulenists as the greatest threat to his hold on power in Turkey and, like all authoritarians, he doesn't tolerate any kind of power base he doesn't fully control or have full leverage over.
