Great and informative video. I just picked up a boat with an 8 hp, 2005 merc that has a similar linkage problem. It's locked in forward... only goes into neutral with the throttle only button. With your help, i may actually get it figured out! Thanks for posting!!
Thanks for the detailed video. I have a 2007 9.9 Mercury and am having linkage problems. I have noticed that cable jumps of the black plastic cam when moving into reverse or forward shift. There is just too much slack to make the adjustment with the two nuts. After watching your video I have realized that I will need a qualified mechanic to fix my issues. Thanks once again
Thanks for this video! I bought a 2013 Mercury 20hp that was running rough. Replaced the carb and got it running right but the grip shift mechanism didn't seem to work correctly. It revs up before shifting into reverse causing hard shifts and sometimes the neutral lockout actuates in neutral. So i figure it needs the cables adjusted but had no idea how to do it. I'm gonna adjust the cables using your procedure on my next day off and i bet that corrects my issues.
Thanks for vid. My 9.9 is hand throttle. I guess to switch to center console and need 1) hand selector (my boat weirdly already has this installed), 2) cable, 3) disconnect the hand throttle, and 4) get that rotary thingee that's in front of the carb. Sorry I am knew to this.
I have the exact same motor when trying the neutral over ride it won’t pop out of gear. Which in turn is not letting me hook my throttle cables up right any ideas ??

Sorry you couldn't get it fixed, hopefully a Mercury dealer can fix it for you.
