2 stroke outboard won't run? Try this before sending it to mechanics. DIY cheap.

  • I have a 1994 Suzuki 115 2-stroke that left me stranded on the river because it wouldn't run. Here's what i did & how i did it for under $10. It's a very easy DIY project that mostly anyone can do without paying those expensive mechanic bills. I'm happy to answer any questions if something was missed in the video. As always thanks for watching.

    A word of advice if I may: Please change your gray fuel line to black, these gray ones have an inner lining that sheds over time. Also try cleaning up your fuel tank and carbs( copper wire for the holes and carb cleaner +pressurized air). Believe me it s worth your time. All the best from Vodice, Croatia

    You’re a legend! I have a 50hp Merc that’s giving me very similar issues. I bought the boat off an old guy who did a lot of trout fishing and I suspect he did a lot of slow speed trolling, so I’m hoping the motor is just carboned up. I just ordered a can of that seafoam to give it a try. (It’s hard to get here in Australia). Wish me luck!

      @@frankfallujah4113 well, turns out I have zero compression in the bottom cylinder :( I think the lower crankcase seal failed and let moisture into the cylinder. I suspect it leaned out and failed. I actually picked up another engine the same that had a siezed gearbox, so I’m in the process of swapping the power heads over. I will be replacing the lower seal before I put it back together 😂

    Dude. I bought a 1998 Nitro with a 115 Tracker by Merc. Hadn’t ran in two years. Was taken home and parked and left for dead. I changed lower unit oil and spark plugs. Emptied old gas. Put in fresh and added sea foam. Followed your method with the carb cleaner and after about 30 minutes I had it purring. I found that a big help was to press the key in when it started to cut off and that was the trick to keep it running long enough to clean itself out. Really appreciate the vid. Steve in NC.

    Outboards for ya.. i got an old 79 evinrude 100hp and if you arent smelling gas the whole time while youre on the boat than it aint gonna run.. ive resinked the carbs, cleaned the thing inside and out, rebuilt the fuel pump, and all but that motor just likes to spit gas out the carbs... starts first. Rip almost every time except after winter for that start.. i like using an atf mix in the 50:1 every couple of years, seems to keep it clean.. or some rotella / diesel oil.. no less than 50:1 though..

    Never use carb or brake cleaner to start a 2t. You're washing the cylinder walls down and greatly decreasing the life of rings an bearings. Get yourself a good quality spray bottle and use premix to squirt into the carbs.

    Take spark plug out, clean it, syringe gasoline into combustion chamber with no oil in gas, remove all old gasoline, put new in, slow pull start 10 to 15 times, open air intake, pump butane in whilst another person pull starts it. You have to run 2 strokes once every ten days or gasoline in combustion chamber evaporates leaving reconstituted sludgy oil in there, hence you need to syringe no oil gasoline into it.

    This is wishful thinking that this magic repair will fix problem - when you run this at speed + load there is a good chance motor will lean out + poss seize as any restriction in carbs (jets / fuel circuits etc can have varnish build up) may not supply fuel requirements. I would be afraid to run like this - do it the right way + remove carbs / fuel pump clean + blow out everything! Power heads or rebuilds are not cheap!

    Why does it work when you are spraying carb cleaner into the carburettor? Is it because it cleans something making fuel available for the carburettor? Or is it because the engine can actually run on carburettor cleaner?

    • @ArrowItArchery
      @ArrowItArchery ปีที่แล้ว +5

      The carb cleaner is combustible like fuel. Spraying it into the air intake serves as a fuel delivery when the carbs are failing to do so. It's a good testing tool for engines to determine a "no start" from lack of fuel or spark. If an engine briefly busts off from carb cleaner, it's an indicator that it's a fuel related issue. If it won't briefly bust off, it's most likely a spark/electrical problem because nothing is igniting the fuel. It can get deeper than that, but that's a basic rundown. 😁

    U need to put some automotive fuel line on it cause that gray line you have on there now have a clear lining inside of it and it will collapse and make your motor starve for gas

    This offers some insight. I had mine in the shop a few weeks ago- got to the boat ramp....and nothing. The guy that worked on it said it would start hard....but this was ridiculous. So this weekend, going to try this, along with some fresh gas. The gas that I have in there is a mixture from last fall, and January before I drove it home from my Father-in-Laws house. We've never had issues with this motor not starting- always started on first crank for 20 years. Great engine.....but we're perplexed after having it professionally tuned up and having the carb rebuilt.

      Gray line may be for "above deck" use. There's black line made for "below deck."
      However, I don't know for certain that all manufacturers follow that scheme.
