well based on Quentin's review I test drove the Ioniq 5 and ordered one on the spot. A great review for people who drive in the real world. No squealing tyres around a test track .......

I’ve had an Ioniq5 for over a month. It’s fantastic, highly recommended. But hardly any reviewer remarks upon it’s only real drawback - no, not some imaginary rear seatbelt problem but that is it doesn’t have a rear windscreen wiper. How odd is that? And no the rear windscreen isn’t self cleaning!
I just picked my Ioniq 5 up yesterday, and asked them to put the Hyundai Glass Coating (which is actually for the paint) on the rear window as well. Today I did notice that after driving a couple 100 meters the water was beginning to roll off the glass. I'm still awaiting the application of a dedicated hydrophobic coating, and I'm quite hopeful this will fix it. I'd say Hyundai should apply a good coating as a standard measure.

Nearly all modern cars with a sloping back window have got rid of the wiper now..it just looks better without..ive never found it to be s problem to be honest...am sure you'll get used to it!
@@mattcc9435 except they render a rear facing dashcam a bit pointless in the rain.
@@jimmymorgan3324 this is the standard come back but when you’re driving forward at any speed, having poor visibility out the rear window would be infinitely better with a wiper. A rear camera is only used when reversing at v low speed.

I purchased one and love it , if you turn the rear seat belts sidewards they don’t rattle . I’m getting 240 > 300 range and £3.50 for a full charge it’s a no brainier . My other car is a v10 R8 😂
The best advice I’ve ever heard…choose the biggest battery you can. Winter knocks hell out of the range, cold weather and heater on doesn’t make good bed fellows for battery range.

I absolutely love mine having had an Ultimate 73kwh one for almost two months. The range is comfortable, the ride is refined, the interior and exterior are comparable to the German brands. Far better than the EQA that is for sure! That car is nothing short of average! The only issues that I have identified are that the Level 2 autonomous driving is a tad on the jerky side… Okay so it is actually close to unusable in windy conditions… Also the fact that they only put automatic door handle release on a couple of hundred cars is nothing short of stingey for a 50k car. Bar that the car has been a revelation for our family of four!
Quick question for you. I have 3 little kids. 2 will be in boosters and one in a car seat. Do you think that would fit ok in the back seat? My oldest won’t be in a booster much longer so that would be a temporary seating situation.

Great review. My 2019 Model 3 does that on the front passenger seat belt in certain seat positions. I sometimes just hook the belt over the seat headrest to shut it up until I can move the seat fwd/back safely.

Now that ecology has become a thing, as far as classics go, the little frugal 2cv deserves a place.
Seemed like a very fair road test. I run an ID3, I don't know the Ioniq 5, but I have driven a Tesla. And I know exactly what you meant about tickling the heart strings. If I had had the choice I would have chosen a Model 3. But I chose to be sensible with the cash. My car is a good car. But a Tesla it isn't. And more's the pity.
Had the same dilemma between ID4, Tiguan PHEV and Model 3… finally went with the M3 as that was the car I really wanted and the VWs were more of a stepping stone. The joy that Tesla gives you is something that VWs didn’t have for me

Nice review Quentin. Re the seat belt issue, although you might consider it a faff, it is resolved ! I experienced the same issue, but, if you let the chrome buckle lie towards the soft seat, you will see on the opposite side a loop of seatbelt fabric to lie against the hard car wall. Position the seatbelt buckle like that and, you will get silence !!

It’s a lovely car. Great video! I feel the true benefits of the telsa are realized with ownership and that gets missed with lots of these “one day” tests. Quentin is qualified more than most for this verdict.
I finally got rid of my Model 3, and replaced it with a 2024 Ioniq 5 Limited AWD, just a few months ago. The Ioniq 5 is MUCH better! The only differences with my version on this side of the pond is it has a glove box (not a drawer) and the frunk is smaller, only enough to store my roadtrip charging paraphernalia. They've fixed the seat belt rattle in mine with padding on the back of the buckle. They've also remedied the lack of a rear window wiper with a digital rearview mirror -which I really love!

It is worth noting you pointed out the blind spot cameras when turning, and saying how every car should have this, that function is only available with the tech pack and not on the standard model

It never ceases to amaze me how motoring journalists seem to always imply that we shouldn’t buy Car A because Car B has a faster 0 to 60 and a higher top speed also. In todays modern world we are constantly reminded that Speed Kills and we should drive more responsibly. Yet over and over we are reminded that despite their safety and reliability, modern cars should be driven with vigour and carefree abandon.
Don’t get me wrong, I may be an old fart these days but I still ride a motorbike that does nought to sixty in less than 3.5 seconds and tops out at over 150 mph, but these days are short lived. I know it, you know it and so does good old Quentin Willson.
And I totally miss the point why the Tesla would be the better car. Good review, bad conclusion.

I used to have a similar issue with my old EV smart for two I leased. The sun visor would vibrate while driving and rattle against the roof of the car. Had to put a felt pad used to slide furniture on hard flooring to the visor to stop the rattle

I think it looks much nicer than the Model 3, it looks like a concept car out of the 80's.
The usual QW entertaining, informative and quick review....just forgot to mention that these things have the unique (apart from Porsche) 800 volt system that can add 100 km in 5 mins...The charging speeds on this and the Kia EV6 make range less of an issue.
I've had the car for about 6 weeks now, and love everything about it, but as Quinton pointed out those rear seat belts knocking on the panel are annoying! I find myself stopping and adjusting them seat belts forward on the seats to stopping the knocking but besides that I love it.
Get some neoprene (wetsuit material) and make little covers/socks
Just clip them in.

Great video Quentin. Just a word of note, the audio sounds a bit too compressed, it's not quite as clear as usual
Technically Quentin, we should all be driving with our rear seat belts connected, to ensure anything kept in the boot/trunk doesn't come through to destroy us in the event of a crash!
Omitted from this report is a comparison of the driving refinement (road and wind noise) between the two cars, and the comfort.

Good work Mr.W. One point of pedantry, rapid charging doesn't use the onboard charger. Whereas charging off a home chargepoint does. Its annoying and confusing that too many people refer to a home chargepoint as a "charger". They are no more chargers than a 3 pin socket inside the house.
It's a fair review based on having a Model 3 and seeing the Ioniq. But for us as a family the Tesla is far better due to the software and charging. Spending ages in the car outside kids clubs or lately at caravan parks shows the power of the Tesla being a gaming and entertainment system. Kids spend hours playing the games, messing with apps to make music or play karaoke, watching Netflix. And I'd never have a car without Sentry mode again. It's an incredible feature. The whole experience with the Model 3 is fantastic.

I'm sat here all envious. Can afford a 3 now but can't afford £3k a year to insure my mrs on one. She needs a few more years experience.
In Australia the Ioniq starts at $75K, where as the model 3 starts at $63k
And you can’t even order one here at the moment. Hyundai simply seeking expressions of interest for 2022 so it looks like a long wait.

I love the design of the Ioniq 5. The interior could look better but I like it MUCH more than the Tesla. The charging speed of the Ioniq 5 is much quicker. For me the Ioniq 5 wins by far.

The STATED charge of the Hyundai is quicker.
Various (many) tests have found it's only that good in absolutely ideal conditions.
Never confuse the headlines with fact.

2:27 is this RWD? Because the frunk storage seems bigger than USA model ( probably AWD VS RWD?)
Disappointed that you made no mention of the absolute fantastic charging rate and the electrical power out option from the charging port using the included adaptor, these must put it even closer to winning the battle
Go to one of the "like for like" road trip tests (RSymons?) Where they take a range of cars on the same route in convoy, including charge stops
You'll see that the headline speed is difficult to achieve.
(Note the VtoL option is only on the highest spec)
I thought the opposite.. I thought the IONIQ5 felt special and to be honest, I was underwhelmed by the Model 3
Great review. I went with the Ioniq 5, because where I live Model 3’s and Model Y’s are a dime a dozen. Everyone has them. At least for now the Ioniq 5 gets all the looks because it’s not a Tesla and there are not many of them. Plus it’s just got a lot of really good tech.
Great review, but I think the size will be an issues for families, supermarket, multistorey cars parks etc

P.S. The ambient sounds I would use possibly to get some kip when parked up and rear seat buckles answer just buckle them up, easy fix.

I took the Ioniq 5 out for a test drive recently and as a M3 owner for 2 years, your review NAILS it.
The Ioniq 5 is awesome, if you want to buy an electric car you should not hesitate just buy the Ioniq 5.
If you want a Tesla buy a Tesla, because everything Quentin said to describe the difference is perfectly and eloquently put in the video. (8:00 minutes into the video for the actual difference.)

I actually drove the Tesla model 3 and Model Y, also drove ID4 and a couple of others, I pick up my new EV tomorrow and it’s the Ioniq 5, why? It was the best car for our family.
TESLA has the supercharging stations. That is their biggest selling point and a heck of a selling point.

How easy is the model 3 bonnet to open when the 12v battery has failed or gone flat? Sometimes mechanics are better.
1) Very easy*
2) Why is it an issue?
* Behind the towing eye cover there's a set of contacts that you connect a battery to to bring alive all the 12V systems. Even a 9V PP3 battery will do it.

Great to see alternatives to the Tesla coming onto the market. I have just completed an 800 round trip from my home on the Fylde Coast to the Isle of Skye in my Tesla Model 3 Long Range without any concerns over elestictrickery and being able to recharge on route because of the Tesla Supercharger network. Plug in, have a coffee, ready to go again. Is the non-Tesla charging network unified enough / fast enough / convenient enough yet? I think this is one of the keys to other manufacturers growing their market share perhaps.
Tesla are opening up their chargers for the rest of us. Going to be interesting how that effects their sales.

@@no-oneman.4140 I understand this is trialling in the Netherlands. It will come at a cost it seems (monthly subscription) so probably not suitable for the casual driver who road trips rarely.
@@robsengahay5614 That’s right - but a casual user who road trips rarely won’t often need access to fast chargers, as s/he will be charging at home.. I fall into that category, and rarely drive my current e-208 outside a 200 mile round trip from home - on the rare occasion that I do, the charging network hasn’t significantly let me down (a few minor frustrations surrounding payment, but really nothing really), and as the Tesla charging network opens up, things can only improve. I WILL be doing a 4000 mile round trip to Perugia and back in my new Ioniq next Summer - will be interesting to see how that goes …

Good review. Would like your opinion on the software in real world usage. I went to the yin daily dealer and by the time you add your options it is not cheaper and also it is 30cm wider..

My son's Tesla tickled my brain when he floored it and I almost blacked out from the G force. Seriously!
There are a number of aspects that come down to personal choice. I prefer a more conventional dash/instrument layout to the big do-everything screen. I know Tesla owners swear by it but IMHO not having speed displayed in front of me could be a safety issue, although these days the stop/go cruise control and auto-speed limit settings might make it irrelevant.
Model 3/Y owners only state that its easy to get use to. Model S owners will gladly demonstrate how the S's more traditional instrument layout is superior.
You do get used to it. One thing I like about the Tesla is night driving and not having a distracting display in front of me. It seems to improve visibility. Actually something that people rarely mention is the quality of the Tesla headlights.
I disagree that it's easier to open with phone. A matter of preference I guess, not everyone has a habit of always carying your phone.

I've got an Ioniq 5 since yesterday, and while it's a great car, there are definitely some WTF???s in their design choices. To me it seems that Tesla has thought through the entire process of buying (byebye dealers), owning (everything OTA, great app) and driving an EV (route planning with chargers and exact information on battery level on arrival; and the Superchargers of course) and made it all as simple and convenient as possible.
Maybe, car dealers are pariahs for sure....
The music is for taking a nap while charging, not really while driving probably.
As soon as he said it's not the prettiest I stopped. Tesla design is getting on in age. This is one of the most unique looking cars out there now and looks great.

About the charging… you really missed a spot there. Not 10-80 in 30 minutes, but 18 minutes. Max. Charging of 230kw in stead of 150 kw.. and the drop iff of this car is far less then teslas is. Nice bit about the seatbelt by the way. It’s very anoying indeed. Quick resolve: click the seatbelt in its socket. But I agree it should be looked at.
I have the Ioniq EV and wish I had waited for this one. But all things come to he who waits. Maybe !!!
I think the Ioniq 5 is a game changer. Makes the Tesla look like a Toyota Avensis in my opinion
I liked the video. One point that was not covered -- the Tesla has access to the Tesla charging network.
What are modular brakes?
Brakes that smoothly apply the same level of friction throughout the braking cycle without grabbing or needing high levels of pedal pressure. Maybe I should just have said smooth?

@@jraheemjefcoat429 Oh I know. I work for a US company based in Novi, MI and am well aware that you guys love your F-Series, Dodge Rams etc - but they literally wouldn't fit into the parking spaces or small roads in many of the old towns here.

to be clear, when you're fast charging you're not using the on-board charger but rather the one in the station. L1 / L2 charging uses the one in the car.
I like Ioniq 5 because of its style and practicality. It does not feel or look luxurious. It was comfortable to drive but it is missing some elements that will take it to the next level.
