Thomas, you can use a simple plastic bin with lid as an automatic washing machine. Install it at your car and it will wash your clothes during your offroad trip. Malcolm Douglas used one in the Outback.
get a metal box made up to go in the secure space in the back of the van, it will be bolted to the floor from the inside and have proper security locks on it, can be any size or shape
Love my Fjallravens. Use them for all sorts not just for the great outdoors. I wax them regularly when its going to be wet and have no issues and the wax washes out no problem.
Tha ks for the video Thomas. All good items and well worth having in your kit. Ah-hem, As far as the coofee goes. I would rather a good flat white over a bog standard mug of coffee any day. Cheers😊
I adore my fjallraven Vidda's & Keb trousers. I bought a set of knee pads that go in the little slots for them. Makes getting low much more comfortable. I just found them useful crawling around on the top of my van to bolt my loose solar panel down.
Love your idea of the journal. I actually do that too! I also have a little 2X3 photo printer so I can include one picture from the days travels along with notes about how far we travelled and details about the day. It’s fun to look back on and brings back memories of a particular day I may have forgotten about. Great video Thomas!
Got to agree that the insta360 is more faff than it's worth. Some people seem to have it figured out and love it but for most of us, I think it's just not worth it. I just sold mine and went back to a GoPro and don't regret it at all.
We religiously watch your videos and love every single one of them. We don’t tend to comment but that misting spray bottle got my wife proper excited, especially when you said “put soap & water in it” We have a VW California with a dog so space isn’t great. That’s a bloody good tip!
I have a pair of Vidda Pro trousers, plus three of Fjallraven's Helag cap which can also be waxed to make them more waterproof. Having waxed one hat for rainy days, the breathability does decline but it's still really comfortable. Nothing quite like writing your ideas with pen and paper. I use a Wanderings refillable travel 'journal', which takes 3x 32 page notebook insets. It's really good and with 3 inserts means there's a bit more leeway for organising my thoughts, i.e. putting certain things in one insert like location information. Helps keep me organised.
Always liked the look of the pants and I try to get a pair of two if they have it in my size. Scrubba Bag will also be a go when I travel more. I also got a hard case for the laptop for additional protection when in the sleeve. I also have a USB LCD display to connect to the laptop so I’ll have two displays while traveling.
I definitely agree about the notebook. When I travel, I use it to keep track of places, animals, plants, etc. Otherwise, when I get home, it ends up being a blur!
Number one item I found essential especially if visiting in winter may sound obvious but get spikes for your shoes/boots as many paths and locations are incredibly slippery
I loved watching your videos from Iceland. What a great experience you had. And amazing images. You are an excellent photographer, teacher, and blogger. I enjoy your videos and look forward to watching them each week. Keep them coming!
Watched the series. It started just after my wife and i got back from a van tour of Iceland and plan to return As gor the insta 360, got one with the same plans you did. Shoot now and frame later. Did that for 1 video. Never finished that video because of how hard it is to edit later. And my puter kept crashing. However, just using it as a wide-angle high-resolution shake free action camera has made it worth it
Thomas, you are priceless :) A tutorial on how make advertising into a must see, share, gotta watch again experience. And yes... it's diary, boot and bum bag Down Under too :)
I've got my calendar. Beautiful work, and arrived in the states unharmed 😁 You've got some great ideas here. Really dig the water bottle trick. I'm gonna have to borrow that one.
Great advices! I started to use Fjallraven trousers this year as well - though the Barents Pro, but it is very similar to the Vidda Pro. I used greenlandic vax on it on both trips to Lofoten (in March with loads of snow and last couple of weeks with constant rain), and I can assure you that there is no breathability issue. I can highly recommend the vax.
I like your sum up of gear and item following your great Iceland adventure. Yet, why is it that we have to listen to background music which kind of send me back to the TV shopping channels of the 1980s...?
You probably won't get to read this but I wanted to say thanks for posting thes tutorials. I just posted a video on photographing the wildlife and landscapes of the Canadian landscapes with great inspiration from your videos! Look forward to your future videos :)
I enjoyed the video as usual Thomas. The guide books by Ellen Bowness are amazing and the amount of detail and discription in them are fantastic, a must for anyone travelling..
I love the soap bottle, its genius! Also, I was wondering if you also use a TSA lock in to lock your back as well as the cable. It would prevent people from opening the back, even if they can't take it they would otherwise still be able to open your backpack.
Definitely concur with the notebook and pen, you just never know when something is going to pop into your train of thought. Was wondering Thomas what do you have for emergencies in case you had to summon assistance and a phone was not an option?
Some great suggestions Thomas, but pen and paper, who would have thought lol, I will be taking some on my next outing. Thanks for sharing, PS good to see the vehicle performed well on the adventure.Thomas would be great to see a behind the scenes video of your film making process.
not sure if this 360 camera has it, but thought i saw there's a feature in the phone app that allows for their AI to create edited videos and move the camera perspective for you - or at least MAYBE editing the clips and camera angle movements in the phone is easier?? not sure but thought that was the case.
Fantastic videos!! Loving your Iceland trip. I'm heading there in November myself, does anyone have a link to a map showing all the protected areas as I'm taking my mini 4 pro with me
cool/fun! 'thought the drone imagery was spectacular throughout; wow. what a machine. (they always look very spooky to me but that's irrelevant here☺). Q please - How did you film the video looking at you as you went up the staircase etc, passing people etc when you first embarked on the bigger hotel ferry? 👏🏼
Well I would liked the 360 camera I can see how it would be great in the van and maybe shooting B Roll whilst your talking to the main camera. The Drone with the follow feature would be amazing. But I could only afford a spray bottle! 😂 but maybe life in the van on my Cornwall shoot will just be a little easier next week
So local friendly American here the wife and i have actually taken to calling the car trunk the “boot” because of the sheer amount of Top Gear UK we have watched over the last two decades….and boy do we get weird looks over here….But yes we are with you on that one point in the video
I wouldn't be caught dead wearing a fanny pack...but a "Bum Bag" is a real possibility. And I appreciate the Scrub Bag. I need to get one. I have had an Insta 360 for a few years (currently the X3) and while it is a bit gimmicky, I enjoy futzing around with it to product little vids for my friends to watch.
Great video... thanks for sharing - Would love to follow in your footsteps one day, with such an epic style Road Trip - Always enjoy watching, been a great inspiration for me since I got hooked in Photography
Did you ever give thought to the Insta360 with the 1inch sensor? The specs on that thing are pretty amazing...same form factor as your regular Insta360, but appears to have much better quality due to that larger sensor in it.....
Does a >249g drone not run into quite a bit of administrative requirements such as license and permit applications, involved fees that rack up quick and such?
With you on the faffery of editing Insta360 video, Tom. My PCs grind to a halt with the Gopro reframe plug-in too which means I have to edit using the awful 360 Studio app and export the reframed video and embed that into Premiere. I don't know what's worse: filming more and more angles or editing these clips. At least with the 360, i don't forget to film as many bits of B roll.....
Great video on the Iceland road trip. By the way, how did the van hold up, some of the footage, it sounded like a busted exhaust pipe that would dent your budget for while.
I went to the far northeast with my UK car, v remote and hardly a soul. I kept my tank over half full, refuelled whenever I could. I was most concerned about punctures and flat battery, but had no issues luckily despite lots of rough gravel. I did consider exhaust inflatable jack bags and a repair kit. I settled for 2 cans of foam 😂 I also took a jump starter and inverter, which powered my dvd player etc. I had basic tool kit and materials like strong tape for running repairs. I carried water for me and enough to refill the car. I travelled alone, kept a journal, and took LOTS of photos for posterity.
just out of curiosity..how do you think cost of trip would compare to flying and renting a van...i prefer to use my own van but sometimes dollars decide the trip
Thomas, you can use a simple plastic bin with lid as an automatic washing machine. Install it at your car and it will wash your clothes during your offroad trip. Malcolm Douglas used one in the Outback.
Bob Wells tried this and really seemed to like it
Yes, but a bin takes up more space than a bag.
It's too bulky, in comparison to a bag. And there is no need for automation when you can squash a bag for 2 minutes and be done.
@@allegrosotto2126 Outside…
You didn't mention a copy of "Chasing Awe" by Gavin Hardcastle.... he takes a copy everywhere.....lol
Is there a link in the description? 😂😂😂

Thanks for the tips Thomas, loved your Iceland blog, and I have your calendar
Lots of great tips Thomas, thanks for sharing. I enjoyed following along on your trip to Iceland.

Great project and I’m delighted it’s been so good for your views too. Love the calendar! Very happy to have it.
Love my Fjallraven gear for winter trips. Check out the Barents Pro Winter trousers. Furry lined trouser heaven 😍
We religiously watch your videos and love every single one of them.
We don’t tend to comment but that misting spray bottle got my wife proper excited, especially when you said “put soap & water in it”
We have a VW California with a dog so space isn’t great.
That’s a bloody good tip!
I have a photography "journal" to make notes of how the trip went and places I may want to go back to in another season.
FINALLY one of you guys recommends trousers! 😅I am searching for so long. Thank you!

try a Norwex cloth for cleaning up in your van. deals with bacteria and dries quickly.
Number one item I found essential especially if visiting in winter may sound obvious but get spikes for your shoes/boots as many paths and locations are incredibly slippery
Great suggestions. This video was better than I expected from the title! Keep up the great work! And thanks for taking me along!

I remember when you dreamed of owning a camper van. Glad to see you're living the dream 🙂
Thanks for the spray bottle idea! - I need to test that for myself!
A lot of useful informations like that trousers and the drone as well. Nice video Thomas.
I love this Tom, it's practical and to the point
Some great ideas there Thomas. Thanks. BUT you forgot one important piece of kit - a spare exhaust !
Thomas, on the trousers, stylish they are not! Your images and videos in Iceland were amazing.
Loved watching the Iceland videos looked amazing
And you found a comb. Well done.
Great tips! And especially the one about the spray bottle ❤
Nice job buddy, loved the trip series to
Great stuff...i had to laugh with your first choice. I was wondering what trousers your were wereing in last videos....now i know. Great tips
Thomas, you are priceless :) A tutorial on how make advertising into a must see, share, gotta watch again experience. And yes... it's diary, boot and bum bag Down Under too :)
Great tips, I camp in a Vauxhall Vivaro van with similar space limitations, i particularly like the spray idea and washing bag.
I'm going to order me up some of those waterproof trousers! thank you
One thing I wanted to know was, what do you do about the toilet situation while camping?
I've got my calendar. Beautiful work, and arrived in the states unharmed 😁 You've got some great ideas here. Really dig the water bottle trick. I'm gonna have to borrow that one.
Great Video Thomas, all useful items for a photography road trip, thanks for sharing
The spray bottle is genius! I will be using that idea.
Great advices! I started to use Fjallraven trousers this year as well - though the Barents Pro, but it is very similar to the Vidda Pro. Loved it, thanks a lot. Any and all advice is helpful. I'll be starting my build out soon. It's a Nissan Xterra.
I love the soap bottle, its genius! Also, I was wondering if you also use a TSA lock in to lock your back as well as the cable. It would prevent people from opening the back, even if they can't take it they would otherwise still be able to open your backpack.
Muy buen video Thomas , yo te compre un calendario y tengo muchas ganas de tenerlo y colgarlo en la pared. Un saludo.

Great video very informative😅
Love the info about the drone, might invest in one
A short a concise summary of the essentials. THansk TH for sharing....PS: how did the VAN hold up & the COST $$$$ of repair LOL!
not sure if this 360 camera has it, but thought i saw there's a feature in the phone app that allows for their AI to create edited videos and move the camera perspective for you - or at least MAYBE editing the clips and camera angle movements in the phone is easier??
not sure but thought that was the case.
The main takeaway for me is that anything to reduce faffery is a good thing :)
Fantastic videos!! Loving your Iceland trip. I'm heading there in November myself, does anyone have a link to a map showing all the protected areas as I'm taking my mini 4 pro with me

Best item which wasn’t mentioned is the van. I want one!
Oh dear, I am already
The drone footage really adds to the whole experience, I'd love one, but I can't really justify the expense.

Got my calendar yesterday. It was a little bent, but then again I get pretty bent whenever I have to fly 5000 or so miles.
Great video... thanks for sharing - Would love to follow in your footsteps one day, with such an epic style Road Trip - Always enjoy watching, been a great inspiration for me since I got hooked in Photography
Loved the video! What MacBook do you use for your on the road video editing?
Did you ever give thought to the Insta360 with the 1inch sensor? The specs on that thing are pretty amazing...same form factor as your regular Insta360, but appears to have much better quality due to that larger sensor in it.....
Hi Thomas Just wondered how you rated your Ridge monkey stove thinking of getting one and just wanted your thoughts .regards David
hmm a monopod is a great idea. filming while driving is definitely a challenge!
"faffery" is now my favourite word! Jokes aside, loved this video!
magnesium :) great work as always man
Does a >249g drone not run into quite a bit of administrative requirements such as license and permit applications, involved fees that rack up quick and such?
I would like to know what that fleece is?!
Tom what happened to the infrared camera.

Hi Thomas,
I just bought the Vidda pants like yours. I would like to waterproof the seat and knees. What kind of wax is used for that.
Fjallraven's own called Greenland Wax.
3:10
“Literally vomit on the page and you’ll be amazed at what comes out!” … Hopefully you meant “figuratively” 😊
I prefer the term posterior satchel
Hi Thomas, how about a video on 10 Useful items I wish I’d taken. I’ll start you off with tent peg hammer😂
You should have one more essential item, a spare exhaust 😂, just kidding. Keep up the good work, Thomas
What about that pullover you're wearing?
That’s my Christmas list sorted.
Hi, what was behind the switch from Nikon to Fuji
Great video on the Iceland road trip. By the way, how did the van hold up, some of the footage, it sounded like a busted exhaust pipe that would dent your budget for while.
Link to these specific pair of trousers?
I always wondered how you got those aerial shots of you driving. I never realized you could automate them so easily. That's incredible!
Do you not miss the bigger van Tom?
‘Writing stuff down’ over ‘journaling’ all the way.
I went to the far northeast with my UK car, v remote and hardly a soul. I kept my tank over half full, refuelled whenever I could. DVD player? Huh?
just out of curiosity..how do you think cost of trip would compare to flying and renting a van...i prefer to use my own van but sometimes dollars decide the trip
Great content! I plan to start clicking a bunch of your affiliate links!!! Cheers!
That does nothing unless you buy something.
You forgot the most important essential item needed on a road trip...
A hammer. Clarkson always had one...
?
No more faffery!
...knew you were a Weetabix man :)
Word of the day Faffery?
Not a what is in my bag, but what was in my van, maybe a decent exhaust lol
Faffery will never replace stunning. 😂
What make are the trousers?
Fjallraven Vidda Pro.
