- It is inevitable that landscape photographers will encounter bad weather. In this video, I tackle heavy rain head on and get some great results. There is no such thing as bad weather in landscape photography, only bad location choice.

It is indeed a great read. I've been a loyal subscriber since the beginning. They have a nice community on facebook worth to join and share images with.
The code also seems to work for the quarterly subscription as I’ve just used it!😮
Reminds me of the saying - "There is no such thing as bad weather, only bad clothing choices."
Totally agree. I've my waterproofs dialled in, just not for the cameras.
Nah there's definitely such thing as bad weather. Just got back from Tenerife and fully intend to hibernate this entire winter away indoors 😂
Lmao that sounds very british
This is a very german saying 😂
It's a saying? I always imagine it as a Jack Wolfskin ad
The three trees image is excellent, great capture of the rain, very painterly. Just goes to show, there’s no bad time for photography.
Fantastic photos in this one, Tom!! Loved the island, but the lone tree in the beginning just topped it for me ;)
I was literally sitting at home looking out the window at the rain when I sat down to watch this. Halfway through I stopped and grabbed the camera and had a fun time shooting while only getting a little wet. Fun times, thanks for the nudge!
Shot in the rain this past weekend. Rain sometimes brings the best conditions and atmosphere but a lot of people avoid it. I rigged an umbrella to clip into my camera bag strap and it kept me dry, my gear safe, and allowed me to use both of my hands freely. A little improvisation and an open mind led to a whole day of foggy moody woodland photography!
Yup, in the rain for wildlife, today.
I've got my camera a sort of rain jacket, providing a whole coverage, view in the viewfinder + screen, and inputs for the hands. It works ok. I didn't think of rigging an umbrella on the camera bag or tripod, I will try this one 😉
@@calieeldalie2547 Yeah it's definitely not perfect but it works lol!
On rainy days a shower cap or two (disposable or otherwise) is a great accessory to carry around in your pocket, especially if you've got your camera on a tripod and it starts chucking down - just whip out the shower cap and quickly cover the camera. 🙂
Yes embrace lovely auk weather. PS thats a fraudulent slip I am from Uk living in Australia AUK LOL. Love the channel. Human and shows what most of us men go through at times. In a somber thought 75% of suicides are Men. We need better support and empathy as we carry so Much responsibility.
Great photo of the lighthouse with paddy's milestone in the back 😊
that shot with the 3 trees , wow, the light catching the rain drops and highlighting the tree trunks , thats magic
Speechless at the last image
On a rainy day, there’s a special sort of light I notice. The green in the grass almost shines as the UV light still catches it and waterfalls look different.
The rain in the three trees photo looks great
Good example there Thomas is there’s no such thing as bad weather, just a bad attitude when it comes to getting out. As you demonstrated with a positive attitude there was still the potential to capture some great images like the first 2 you shared. Lovely image at the end with Pladda Lighthouse and Ailsa Craig in the background which used to where the granite for curling stones was quarried.
That image @ 5.50mins. Wow!
Excellent adventure! Thanks for taking me along!
Love what you do Thomas. THANK YOU!
Beautiful centered shot, Thomas. Well done.
truly wonderful lighthouse shot
LOVE the first lone tree image. So good.
Lovely images! Thank you, Thomas!
Loved it bud! That island shot was stunning! Great find
I love the mood inclement weather brings.
Love that last image!
Love, love, love your three images
Lovely shots mate.
Love the final image Thomas 👍
Stunning image of the island. Great video as always.
Sorry I rambled on about the Nikon D850 before and forgot to say the image with the 3 trees was fantastic. Thanks again Tom.
Wonderful Lighthouse Shot!
Love the lighthouse image, bang on.
Images in rain are my favorite. Loving it. Thank you Thomas.
Wonderful shots Thomas. Just beautiful 👌🏽
Your dedication in such horrible weather, is why you end up with absolutely stunning images.
That first photo with the tree really sings for me!
'Faffery'.. what a great word.
I love that final lighthouse image, Tom! Cheers!
The two images you took in the rain are incredible, so atmospheric - Thank you for another great video.
Superb as always. Great to see how you integrate the adversity you encounter into your work.
Another inspirational video❤
Today was the first of a multi-day visit to the Oregon Coast with rain, wind and fog promising to prevail throughout. Between video and comments, a few practical tips offered, but the main lesson is quit holding back, fretting and making excuses, just dive in. The test will come tomorrow morning.
This morning I headed for the beach during a lull that was promptly followed by the sucker punch, returning gale force wind driving horizontal rain in sheets. I took shelter in the lee of a towering rock pinnacle. I then worked my way downwind from sheltering rock to sheltering rock, failing to find a composition to motivate opening the pack. By the time I beat my way windward, back to the beach access stairway, I was soaked despite head to toe Gortex, and ready to admit defeat. “…just dive in.”
Enjoyed. And of course inspiring 😊🚉🚦
Love the sound of rain pelting down on your van!
I really love your photograph of the three trees in the rain. Wonderful!
Tbh, I love rainy landscape photography. I dunno, the depth from the rain and the low clouds, the atmosphere, I love it!
Thanks Thomas for a great and enjoyable video 👍🙂
Actually I like those kind of videos. I tell myself often: there is always a photo. And most of us viewers probably don't go out in perfect weather conditions to beautiful landscapes but have to take, what we can get in our free time. So do us a favor and do more videos in boring landscape with bad weather conditions and - if I am not asking too much: midday.
Stunning images today Thomas.
Love the video, as always.
I have to say Thomas, your photos from this trip are my favorite that I've seen in some time. Good work, it seems like you've hit a new stride.
Terrific inspiring video. The lone tree in the rain, phenomenal.
Stunning image of the island, beautiful capture..
Fantastic video Thomas. Some amazing, simple compositions there! Wonderful.
Enjoyable. The chat the cameras the drive the food. Pure entertainment.
Your spirit for this is amazing. Excellent work, thank you.
Holy shit that lighthouse image is 10/10! It’s just amazing, I can’t describe how it makes me feel but it’s glorious!
The first picture must be one of my all-time favorits- absolutely stunning!
Oh boy, that final image of the two islands is surreal! In the best possible way, that is. Wow!
That shot of the trees on the hill in the rain is amazing!
Magnifique photo de l'ile avec le phare ! Bravo👋👋👋
Loved both of those images in the first half of the video. Well done!
Great Video Thomas, shame about the weather, 5:56 stunning, the weather has created a vignette around the tree, 6:59 the rain has created an interesting effect against the trees, Beautiful light, this is easily the best image of the video, thanks for sharing
The “rain photo’s” and the lighthousephoto are great work Thomas. Thnx.
Beautiful picture thank you for your hard work .I love the rain sometimes
Great pictures.
Some heavy rain hacks fro a sports photographer (scotland approved)
>Use the lens hood to shed of some of the rain
>Use a trash bag to wrap the camera in if you don't have proper rain covers
>carry a small roll of electrical tape to hold the cover in place
TH-cam says I only can watch three more videos before the player turns off. Your video - totally worth it :)
Watching your videos always makes me miss home! Great video Thomas
one of your best video in long time...beautiful photos
I think your channel is like a ministry. In a world of such craziness and evil, it is literally therapeutic to watch a wholesome episode of Tomas Heaton with awesome nature images. Thanks!
That final image - “it doesn’t look real.” Wow!! Absolutely stunning photograph. 👏🤩
Can't fault your enthusasim. ❤
The best photography in years. Love the subject and mood.
The lighthouse image is incredible 👌
Hi Thomas, the first image ist absolutely fantastic 😮
Great lighthouse photo! Thank your for the digital magazine suggestion. Will look into it for sure. Always inspiring, thank you
That last image is stunning. You “need” to offer that on your website. I need that on my house!
5:55 Absolutely Stunning Tom
I always tune in for your photography but stay for the adventure and story. This was no exception. Hope your equipment is too badly damaged! Thanks for taking us along. Have a great weekend.
Excellent video Thomas and beautiful images too.
From a Bristolian living down-under. 👍
Conditions like these are great as an adventure and also a great way to improve your compositions with the crutch of great light
It was definitely worth getting soaked as the first two images are excellent, I especially like the one with the lone tree....and of course the view looking down on the light house with the Ailsa Craig sitting mystical in the background...many thanks
I really like your videos. you continue to provide excellent content. take care
Love the lighthouse image the central composition and use of negative space makes me think of Wes Anderson films 😃
I love the shot @7:00. Thee rain makes the shot of those 3 trees!
As I read a few lines below, I'm sure the umbrella comments go on and on! An umbrella is just one more thing to add to the backpack and if used, is cumbersome. Add some wind and they are impossible/dangerous to use.
You seemed to be successful here wiping the lens with a cloth, based on the image you captured! I have had more luck keeping a handfull of disposable rain ponchos. They are very cheap and transparent. With the poncho over the camera and tripod, I can, frame a shot, wait for a cloud to move, then pushing the lens through a sleeve or a hole in the poncho, focus and shoot. I've even used a plastic sandwich bag just to keep the water off the lens glass. How many dry cloths can you carry!
The pep talk is apprecidated, but rain + wind can still stop me! "...the wind IS difficult to embrace.."
You’ve inspired me to get out and start photography again
Superb images, too hard to chose which is my favorite.
wow.. the best images I've seen lately on this channel.. My style of landscape photography. Good job :)
Loved this film Thomas, what a place and yet more superb images which have so much atmosphere! 👏👍😀🍺
Awesome :)
Glad to end work and come home to a new video
Hope you enjoy it!
I love the rain pelting down in front of the three trees. I can feel the weather when I see that image. The others are good too :)
Love the tree shot.
18:49 , the island look like floating in the air. very nice shot !
You seem to be more energized and/or passionate in this video than you have in past weeks..good video!!
Great stuff as always. The island in the bg is Ailsa Craig that's where the curling stones come from.
Perfectly timed considering the storm. Up here in the Lakes this mornings low cloud after the rain was spectacular… walking the dog, forgot my camera… doh! Loved the first shot of the lone tree
All great images but that last one is perfection. I've added Arran to my list of places to shoot!
Loved the image of the lighthouse and am pretty sure will be featured in 2025 calendar.
Love your vids Tom. Been watching from when you started. Watch an old 8 yr old one the other day, man you are so much more relaxed now. I guess it comes with age and you just take what comes at ya.
I'll buy that lighthouse photo. That photo got me on my migrant hart because it shape its exactly like my home country.
