  • Sky News contributor Chris Uhlmann says there is a “real workforce problem” in the Australian Defence Force.
“We have a real workforce problem within the ADF,” Mr Uhlmann told Sky News host Peta Credlin.
“But, beyond that, we don’t have the kit which we need to fight with.”

100% right. I applied for the reserves as a FIFO worker with a current Class 1 CASA medical and got knocked back due to slight colour vision issue for a very basic job. My mates reckon I should have put "they/them" on my resume.

I appreciate your decision, but by the time you're invaded it will be far too late, unless you've prepared beforehand.
That means conscription now so you have people who are trained to fight before they have to - because your enemy will be trained & ruthless in their fighting.

From hearing ads on the radio the selling point to join the ADF is 'Join and train for a career in [ insert profession ] ... The ADF is recruiting people to do a trade. There's no mention of serving your country, to protect your country from our enemies, to be a soldier or a sailor or a fast jet pilot, the ads are all based around training to gain a trade. Once upon a time you'd see an ad and the ad was about joining to be a rifleman, a tank driver, driving trucks or being a medical orderly. Not today. Join and learn a trade, but make sure first you have passed year twelve at school and have some tertiary education. What happened to general entry that you don't need a higher education?

Give serving personnel a $30,000 increase in pay at every level. Offer graduating year 12 students $75,000 tax free to be in the armed forces for a year, instead of staying at home on their PlayStations for a ‘gap’ year. Provide Quest style apartment accommodation at bases, and stop moving personnel from town to town so often.

Offer fee free university education for students after 5 yrs completed service and 5 years reserves afterwards, and give a lifetime interest free homeloan as well. Ramp up and grow the school cadets programs so young people can get a taste of what Defence life is like to pique their interest The government always bangs on about how important defence service is well prove it. You'd never have recruiting issues ever again by employing the above a serious benefit for a serious commitment. Soldiers Sailors and Airmen get sweet FA at the end of the day. once all is said and done they get very little in the way of tangible benefits. Not that they do it for riches they want to serve but that's the truth of it. You want a different outcome Canberra try another approach.

The stark gap Dibbs mentioned is one that has been part of every Australian government defence policy for over 20 years now. I will judge coalition defence statements by whether they are actually implemented or not. Which, going on when they were in government, will be no better than Labor has been.
Frankly both side of politics have failed the nations defence. If they had any morals at all, both would hang their heads in shame.
That they do not points to the lack of morals on both sides of the house.

The current government is also finding it difficult to even maintain defence numbers. It is not Albos problem and to suggest so is just idiotic partisan politics.
