Project 750Li Part 1: Engine Removal

แชร์

  • เผยแพร่เมื่อ 15 ส.ค. 2024
  • This beautiful 2011 BMW 750Li has only 82,000km, a BMW individual interior and all the options. The only issue is that the car does not run. What started as a small misfire eventually turned into the car no longer being able to start for more than a few seconds.
    The previous owner was quoted over 11,000$ for an engine replacement at the dealer which is when he decided to sell it. I picked the car up for very cheap and diagnosed it with bad timing chains, a common issue on the N63 engine.
    In Part 1, the engine, transmission and subframe get removed from the vehicle.

    Excellent video! I just bought a beautiful 2012 750li Individual. I think it has jumped timing and I plan to use your videos for a diy engine swap. I plan to take my time and just do little each day...may take me several months to complete but I only paid 2300 for it! I hear its actually easier to replace the engine rather than replacing the timing chain(s)....I shall see. Thank you for such a priceless tool!

      Congrats, great buy! Yes, the engines are really cheap to buy if you are in the US, you can get an entire long block for about 5000$. When you add up all the parts you need, plus the work involved, a new engine is definitely worth it. Good luck with the project, it's a great car once they're working haha

    The amount of bolts and nuts, connections, cables, screws, plates, other stuff. Imagine how tedious one should be to correctly store this and then put on in reverse order. Otherwise be very familiar with the car and to know by heart all the screws. Almost rocket science. And that’s me being a software dev.

    The amount of work needed to dismount engine!!. I am no car mechanic but need a good memory to know what goes where during reassembly. I am mostly a motorcycle mech and I take picture and write notes on every step I take. So when I reassemble i don't rely on my memory.

    • @bimmer.doctor
      @bimmer.doctor  ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Exactly! The main issue is the timing chains that will be replaced, but at the same time I will be replacing valve seals and any other leaking hoses as it is much easier to work on when the engine is out of the car.

    Can timing chains be done without removing heads? By removing oil pans and lowering subframe for timing cover removal?

    • @bimmer.doctor
      @bimmer.doctor  10 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Yes! It can actually be done without even removing the oil pan. That’s the way I did my first one on an X6. However, I would highly recommend against doing it this way if you have the tools to drop the engine out. You spend more time fighting for space than actually working. You are also able to do a much better job and replace other components along the way when the whole engine comes out.

  • @jeffbriesemeister2284
    @jeffbriesemeister2284 2 หลายเดือนก่อน

    What was the weight capacity of your lift table… ready to drop my engine assembly, but a little concerned about the weight. Otherwise I’d have to do a pallet and a pallet jack, but would rather not bring that home from work!! Thanks again for the amazing videos & help!

    • @bimmer.doctor
      @bimmer.doctor  2 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      The table can support 1,540lbs. You definitely need to have a good table to do this. Another thing is to make sure you add counter weights in the front seats, or put a jack in the rear of the car to prevent it from tipping over when you drop all that weight out the front! Good luck!

  • @joyroc885
    @joyroc885 ปีที่แล้ว

  • @southothehighway
    @southothehighway ปีที่แล้ว

    You may also want to replace the block drain bolts. Install new ones with teflon tape as steel bolts will corrode into an aluminum block. So when you want to do a complete coolant flush, it ccx will be easier.

    I need to remove an engine from my 2016 X5. It's N63 engine, xdrive. I don't have a lift in my garage.
    Is it possible to remove it with a regular engine lift?
    The plan is to remove the front bumper and support, disassemble the transmission(I would prefer to keep it in place and support it with a stand), and use the engine lift to pull the engine.

    • @bimmer.doctor
      @bimmer.doctor  7 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

    I commented last fall, about my project car 2012 750Xi with a bad rod bearing, was way too cold to work on during the winter. Have made could progress on trying to pull just the engine. Car lift options are very limited. I did successfully complete an engine swap on a 2002 525i 6-7 years ago, but this a lot more complicated. I would like to pull just the engine if that is possible, I think I found one utube video showing this being done. I still have electrical, vacuum, fuel, and engine/transmission connection. Any other pointers would help. Not sure the engine can be save as I saw vertical scoring of one of the cylinders with my bore scope.

    • @bimmer.doctor
      @bimmer.doctor  4 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      Yeah puling the engine without a lift will be tough, but I have seen people do it. It will definitely take longer, especially on the xDrive cars because you have the axles and stuff in the way. If you have scoring on the cylinder walls then you should replace the engine. I actually have a video coming this weekend comparing an N63 engine replacement vs rebuilding it, so keep an eye out for that!
