I used to be able to replace a clutch and pressure plate in a VW Beetle in 30 minutes, which involved removing and replacing the engine. Good luck doing that in any modern car.

I can't do it in one hour, but my 20 year old co worker can have it in the stand in less than 2 hours. He is one of the few that does it thru the top. Most of us to go to the bottom
Ive got a 2011 750li with n63 engine.. Someone tried to change change the spark plugs and now cylinder 1 spark plug is not threading.. Just goes in and keeps spinning.. Im being told I will need to have the head removed to fix it and they must pull the engine... Can this be helicoiled or threadsert repair... Or would engine need pulled? Car still runs and drives but very poorly because its misfiring due to not firing on all cylinders.. What do you suggest.. Im not driving it until I get this figured out. Your input is appreciated. T.i.a
So when my local shop is trying to charge me 40 hours of labor to swap out the blown engine for a new one in my X5, they are definitely overcharging time. Need to find someone who will do this fairly and correctly in AZ
Not necessarily. It’s all paid flat rate so manufacturers set the time it takes the average guy to do the job at a dealer. This job takes most techs days.

Yeah I didn’t have a mic when I made this. They don’t actually pay to remove the engine. They want you to remove the cams with the engine in the car and use the AGA tools but it’s terrible. I pull the engine and use my own tools. Much faster.
Hello my friend. Question....the turbo oil drain /return line connection to the bottom of the turbo. My new install is leaking on both turbos. I used the metal gasket with a rubber oring inside the groove in the gasket. Do i need to use the metal gasket? Do you have apart number you recommend so i won't have to tear into the engine for a third time. Thanks in advance
this is very impressive, i, picking up a 13 550ix tomorrow with 126k km (80k miles) that i don't know much about, already committed to it. if it needs valve seals its going tobe a hell of a DIY for me. i own/run a performance mx shop I'm a great mechanic but never messed with BMWs much. if a pro like you can get that engine out in an hour. I'm hoping a experienced mechanic like me whos a noob with bmws can get this done correctly in a few days! is there an updated valve seal for these n63s?

I just used this video to drop my trans and pull the engine. On jack stands and a driveway lol. Engine is just sitting there completely disconnected now until I pickup the hoist. Going to buy two engine stands and work the parts over and upgrade the turbos etc. Your video encouraged me immensely. I wish you were closer so I could pay you to finish it for me haha. I’m in Florida.

And i was lucky enough to get a mechanic that takes pride in his work and went through it with a fine comb. I had to cover 5% of the total cost which was $1490 but its like new again. Wanted to ask you if i should change the oil after a 1000 miles during the break in??? Also thanks for showing the shortcuts you developed along your journey of the n63 swaps. i replaced a customers n63 on a 2009 750i and now i get a short to ground code for the turbo auxilary coolant pump....checked relay and fuse, wiring, grounds and all is good. replaced pump witha genuine part and still dont know what else could be the issue..

Yeah except I pull the axle shafts first. Just unbolt the lower control arm and you can swing the knuckle out and pull the axles. Oil cooler line is a little different but everything else is the same.
I just did it and it was super smooth!! Just took the moflers and driveshaft out to make easy for the Transmition and transfer to come out . Thanks for the advice!!

i don't yet, most of what i have been doing is the original n63, i did one n63t in a f15 and its pretty similar to the e70, but you don't have to pull the inter cooler on the trucks, i do that to access the heater hose at the water pump, on the trucks that hose continues to the rear of the head and disconnects there,
Hmmm, he removed the tranny without removing the exhaust + shieldings. I wonder if that would be the case for all other BMW tranny removals like on a E60 M5 with SMG.
tests take a couple house, the check the timing chains, compression, inspect for oil leaks and send all the info to BMW then they make the decision on to repair or replace, engines are backordered a few months out usually,

If I knew it had a perfect oil change record maybe. They aren’t bad engines. They just have some issues that get neglected. When everything is good they run awesome. There’s a lot of room for more power.
hey Dillion, if i got an engine swap from a bmw dealer and it says short block on the paperwork, n63 2012 750li is that generally a long block, complete remanufactured with updated parts to hopfully eliminate a lot of the issues we were having, with new pistons rodes, heads, fuel enjectors, spark plugs etc etc? nice video.. thx for unloading any break in suggestions for 1st 1000 miles? i feel alittle vibration when accelerating after on a cold start at low rpms, when its going into 3rd gear, goes away after warms up.
short block is actually the long block, block, heads and all internals, most of the time injectors are reused, they are usually a cold start rough running or hard acceleration misfire, some cars have a warranty extension on them, as far as break in BMW doesn't recommend anything specific, i wouldn't take it to the racetrack or anything but i give them a couple full throttle pulls to make sure everything is good before i release them back, id rather have the issue while i have the car than give it back to the customer and they have to come back,

Would it be easier to just drop the motor and transmission together? I have to do valve stem seals on a 750 with n63 engine. Ive dome the n62 valve stem seals on the car with the tools you used but it was such a pain and took forever. Great videos. Thanks.

Ive always done engine pulls from the top but that was on older American rear wheel drive cars. Seeing it can still be done helps but with an Xi model out the bottom would probably be the preferred?
It’s close to that. It’s a rebuilt unit. There’s a ton of other parts that go with the engine replacement that are not included in that. Labor is probably around 30 hours depending on the dealer. Usually all in it costs about $10-$12k if it needs turbos that’s more though. I pull all cars out the top drive or not. X5’s and x6’s I drop. They don’t physically fit out of the top. Shock towers are in the way.
It’s close to that price. It’s a rebuilt unit from Germany. Together with all the other parts needed labor at the dealer is usually around 30 hours to replace. Most the estimates I do are $10-$12k. I pull all cars x-drive or not out of the top. All X5 and X6 I drop. They don’t physically fit out past the shock towers.
T3ck_lyfe thank you for the reply. I decided to pass on the 2011 550 even though I could have gotten it for $2500. I am thinking that engine design with those turbos mounted up top and in the middle of the V is just something that will require major maintenance all to frequently. My daily driver is a 2005 545 sport with 214,000 that I’ve done all the usual items on including valve stem seals. I love the performance of the V8’s and would probably really love the N63 but I had a local BMW service manager advise me to walk away. Thanks again.

In my situation...would you still drop the engine and transmission out together from the bottom, remove the transmission and then drop the engine, or...what's your recommendation basically?

bmw says 1 liter per 750 miles, try to find a bmw specific shop, not just a European shop, ask them if they have done them, most of the time is just needs valve seals and oil leaks fixed

I stand corrected it looked like the exhaust had been removed and O2 sensor was hanging.
I dont remove the exhaust. I can have the engine removed in 1 hour starting from fully assembled and running.

In the cars only difference is pulling the front axles. All suvs I drop the cradle. The engine won’t fit out the top.

Hey in a reman engine n63tu can I use liquid moly 5w30 or I have to use bmw oil to break in the motor?
Liquid moly is good. Put a couple hundred miles on it and change it.

There are lots to repair it with the heads on in the car. Common problem on ford engines.

i use all the parts they give list, bmw is pretty good about extra parts being billed they don't list unless its something big,

My daily driver is a 2005 545 sport with 214,000 that I’ve done all the usual items on including valve stem seals. I love the performance of the V8’s and would probably really love the N63 but I had a local BMW service manager advise me to walk away. Thanks again.

Yes, if they find something major wrong with it. The car must have less than 100,000 and never had the ccp done for any other work.

Crazy I’ve never seen n63s get pulled out like that. We use the table and drop the motor and trans together
i drop x5's and x6's out the bottom
@@MrDbaggins I am about to replace the N55 engine in an E70 X5. I have a lift, but don't have the nice table to drop everything on. In my situation...would you still drop the engine and transmission out together from the bottom, remove the transmission and then drop the engine, or...what's your recommendation basically?

California for you. Most techs can’t to it in an hour. Tech are paid by what the manufacturer says it should take.

How much oil was that car loosing every 1k miles? Mine is burning 1qt every 500 and in my country I don’t trust anyone to work on it. :/
bmw says 1 liter per 750 miles, try to find a bmw specific shop, not just a European shop, ask them if they have done them, most of the time is just needs valve seals and oil leaks fixed

Hey Dillon, so as you know i had mine replaced about 6 weeks ago. The cars been sitting in my garage for about 2 weeks and its leaking coolant. Could you give me advice to where a common coolant leak would be coming from. Im gonna take a peak this weekend and see what i find. Thank you Dillon, hope all is well
Leo Zabo if the leak is coming from the back of the engine, it’s the rear seal. Must take transmission down, while at it replace crankshaft seal
possibly turbo coolant lines or the y-pipe between the heads, some times the sensor in the lower hose,
