In this video, we look at the new 2019 Honda Ridgeline. This model is the RTL-E trim which is loaded with technology. In modern steel metallic with black leather. Features in the Ridgeline RTL-E are Garmin navigation, honda sensing, in bed speaker, two-way tailgate, sunroof, power sliding window, apple carplay, android auto, AWD and more.
The truck has a 3.5-liter V6 engine with four different drive modes including normal, mud, sand, and snow. The Ridgeline has 280 hp and 262 torque. The MPG ratings are 18/25/21 in the city, highway, and combined. This is rugged yet refined to say the least.

I've owned Toyota trucks since 1982, and when I sold my 2000 Tundra last year (which never gave me any problems), I had my heart set on purchasing a smaller Tacoma TRD Off Road 4x4 Long Bed. After test driving it, and a 2018 Ridgeline, it was a no brainier to purchase the Ridgeline. The price was about the same for an RTL-E out the door. More comfortable seating. More safety features (the only 5 star NHTSB truck to receive that high a rating). Better handling (it's a Honda!). Better acceleration with V-Tech (Tacoma felt like I had the parking brake on). Better braking (4 disc). Better storage. Better ride (4 wheel independent suspension). Significantly quieter in the cab. The only thing that the Tacoma was better at was the ground clearance, huge library of aftermarket parts and crawl assist for the female drivers.

I will be scaling back from my full size truck in another 18 to 24 months and I know it's early but I'm window shopping now. I don't offroad and I only occasionally pull an atv trailer with 2 atvs or just take the one in the truck bed. I really like to look and thought of owning a Tacoma double cab 4x4 but it's just plain weird to sit in. The Ridgeline is enough truck for my current needs, it has a way better interior, more features and it's easier on fuel. I know the Ridgeline doesn't have a chassis but the only reason for a chassis is for towing capacity and offroad capability. A JD Power article indicates the current model Tacoma is less reliable than even the GM twins which is unsettling. It's good to know that a Toyota guy like yourself has high praise for the Ridgeline.
I did same thing, traded in 2014 Tacoma and 2015 4Runner for 2 Ridgeline's (2017 RTL-E first and then 2019 RTL - T). Didn't buy Ridgeline years ago because I just didn't like the wing style sides. Still Have a 1995 Civic EX. Love Them All (:

I sell cars for a living at a major used car dealership. I've driven every truck on the market, and I can tell you there's not many I would own except this new Ridgeline. Never thought I'd be interested in a Japanese pickup. There are always going to be gimmicky features that come and go for trucks, but you can't fake build quality. Thats something I really like in these new trucks.
Decent city type trucks or light duty. My father owns a Ridgeland now that he is older and it does him well. It is comfortable riding, can haul small loads or pull a decent sized trailer with his animals he is taking to the auction. It isn't no dodge 2500 or f250 but not a bad little truck.

I just test drove a Ridgeline with my wife. It rode smoother and quieter than her new Cadillac SUV. Also more comfortable seating!
She was not amused that she says she just bought the wrong vehicle!
I don’t need off road capabilities like low range etcetera as I seldom use it on my Ford so this is the truck for me. AWD, unibody and 4 wheel independent suspension all add up to smooth, quiet and safe. Plus the innovative truck bed and back seat storage coupled with a huge compartment between the front seats add up to a real winner. Saving my pennies 😎😎

Great Little Truck. Downgraded from a half ton work truck because I no longer needed it. If You need a work truck, buy a work truck, otherwise this little truck is perfect. Test drove all the other small trucks out there and the Ridgeline was the best all around.

I bought a new Ridgeline in 2017 and have been happy with it. It has served me well, except (1) I wish the back doors could open wider, and (2) the truck body sit higher.
A fantastic truck provided you don’t have unrealistic expectations of it.This is a unibody vehicle,not a body on frame vehicle.It was not designed for,nor could it ever do serious off roading.It was not designed for that in the first place.

What I love about this truck from a utilitarian standpoint is the fact of how low the bed actually is which makes it real easy to load and unload stuff from the bed of the truck. Especially with the side opening tailgate which every other truck can't do because they're too high for the possibility to even be worth considering. When most people like me don't even need a big huge truck like a 1500 Chevy/Dodge or even the F-150. Dont get me wrong I like em all just this has a more utilitarian standpoint.

Great Thorough review! I have a 2013 Ridgeline RT-L. I thought about getting the new one because there are features that I really love and the gas mileage and the connectivity (tech stuff) is such an improvement but, I can't get past the new body style. I love my 2013 and its honestly the best car I have ever owned in just about every way. The New Ridgeline style is so bland. Thank you for sharing the review and hopefully they will change the body style in the next few years back to a more unique one.....
I loved the ride and rigid power of the 1st gen. Ridgline....and the current model is surely awesome, but it could use a rack and roll bar to help the awkward 90 degree back window.
I believe the front turn signal is also located in the same height as the fog lights which is very very low

Perfect truck for many of us that don't need heavy trucks. What are the overall dimensions compared to a Pilot? I think the stereo in the bed is stupid can you a lower trim level that doesn't have this and then add AWD? How much of an upgrade in $ is AWD?
I feel that if they kept the 1st generation nose and wider opening doors(like the first generation again..)with the second generation bed it would be a better look/design
Does your lab ride in the back with the seat up or down?
Nice vid. With the rear seats up, is it easy to put a bike in the back? A lot of people complain about the rear doors not opening far enough so I wasn’t sure.
The clearance of the rear doors are a problem, but this can be fixed by replacing the stock door checkers with longer ones (i.e., a set designed for the front doors).
It's nice but it needs manual controls added to touch pad and the back doors don't open wide enough. Also, it would be ideal to have a couple more inches of ground clearance. Otherwise, awesome !

This truck is not as impressive as it’s previous generation.
You can buy a set of the front door openers and swap them onto the back doors in about 10 mins and $20-$30 bucks
The perfect truck for people who don't really need a truck (like me). But Honda needs to up their engineering a little. It could be so much better. Start with having the rear doors open few more degrees. Integrate the latches for the bottom of the rear seats into the floor so it can truly be a flat floor, or design the seats so they don't need to have the folding legs.
that is our only complaint of our 2019 Ridgeline is the rear doors..they do need to redesign them to open more
@@susancarpentieri2935 2017 owners had it solved already!!! They replaced the rear door stop with a front door stop which made it open wider without issue. Look it up, it's all over the ridgeline forum. Good luck.

the look is not my style but the features are very practical IMO.
I know this is not related to my other post, but 2 questions that I need to know that are a must for me 1 a selling point and one not so much for me. Anyhow is there Android auto? I've always been an android user never liked Apple. Now the second question is there anyway to get it without the piano black trim? Just I hate the glossy look of it and the fact of it getting fingerprints on it easily...
There's a lot of people complaining about the rear doors not opening enough. There's a simple fix for this, an inexpensive pair of front door detent will allow the rear doors to open much more without any clearance issues or wiring damage. Perhaps honda will fix this in the mid cycle refresh but it's a small complaint for such a great vehicle.

Since this is a front wheel powertrain bias truck. This should be great platform for like a turbo diesel. More like a 2.5 liter inline four or something.

I have the 2018 and one thing I wish Honda offers is a lock on the tail gate. I have a cover on my truck bed. Since there is no lock on the tail gate I can't store anything in the truck bed over night. The small trunk space in the back has lock but it is too small to store anything bigger like luggages and such when I travel.
This is true. You could put your things in the in bed storage compartment and lock that though, just a thought.
Aftermarket tailgate lock available at most truck accessory shops. Uses your key fob and cost about $200

You forgot the new updates and screen size of the new infotainment center from last year.
Just to clarify....truck bed does not contain any speakers ...there are exciters installed behind the truck bed that turn the bed itself into the speaker "cone" surface...works really well....but there are no actual speakers in there.
I really don't like the look at all. I own a 2009 and the one thing I did like about it was it did not look like another truck. This one just looks like a cut up van. Everyone has different taste but the tough look is gone, the unique look is gone. I like the extra features and spme refinements but overall I just don't like the look. Honda is a great product but I am really disappointed in this look.
Honda please build in right hand drive for the aus and New Zealand market.

Just bought a tocoma 2018 model still looks like a real truck I think Honda should have made it look more like the Tacoma this new Honda does not look like a real truck it’s to low trucks need ground clearance and the front looks like the Chevy truck needs to look more like the Tacoma to get more people to buy it I hope sales will be good only time will tell
Who would want a Honda Tacoma lol. Not everyone is like you who only buy for looks. The Taco sucks on mpg and it's cramp.
Is it possible to add a lift to the front ? And doing so does it void any warranties?
You can lift the front and back but no more than 2in on the front. Traxda, truxx, and jsport has a kit. If it's dealer installed, i think they hold their warranties but youd have to ask.

It's a little issue but can be fixed according to the Ridgeline blog site . After paying top dollar for a new truck I know I don't want to pay more money to have the doors open wider in the backseat .

You have the nerve to draw attention to the big back door LOL one of the worst failures of this manufacturer is that back door not opening wide enough for someone to just put a box in the backseat.
Canadian models with the higher trim level got the front seat ventilated . Can we see this coming to US?

No full size spare tire fits in the trunk like the 1st gen. Epic fail! I got a matching 5th wheel on my 2014. Don't plan on any out of state trips in the new Ridgeline.

Believe me, I really really really wanted to like this as a pickup truck but it's simply not a pickup truck in straight term's. I'm a great Honda fan. Don't get me wrong.
The truck bed comes "pre-coated"? Please do some research on the vehicles you sell. The truck bed is not "coated", pre or post. It is an extruded composite truck bed.
Darin Pearson pre coated is easy enough for most people to get the idea. Usually not necessary to get that technical. But thanks for the technical wording.
I sold my Ford trac 2004 loved that truck ! Bought the 2019 Ridgeline I call it my Lexus of trucks .It's also worth noting I drove several Ford's including 4x4 ..I like the Ridgeline it also fits into my smaller 2 car Garage . The only off roading I have done is out in the washboard Backcountry sand roads in South Florida it did well !
I had a 2006 Ridgeline for 10 years (100k miles) and was very happy.. my brother has had a 2008 for 10 years (175k Miles) and he too has been very happy. A friend has a 2007 for 11 years (180k Miles) and he loves his too... but none of us would buy the new body style. Bed is too shallow, wheels are too thin, too Pilot like, rear door entry sucks.. just our opinion..
Thomas Rossi I own a 2007 Ridgeline since new. Test drove the 2018 and was extremely disappointed. Back doors don’t open wide enough, bed too shallow and driver armrest sucks, and don’t get me started on the knobless stereo either. Luckily my 2007 is still going strong with no signs trouble.
I love my 2006 Ridgeline. I bought it new and have had no issues. My only gripe for the gen 1 was that the bed was not scratch resistant. First haul scratched it. I test drove the gen 2 and think it is more refined and more powerful. At the end of the day I like mine better. It's got more visual flare.
I owned the 2011 and loved every moment. I traded it in for the 2017 because they gave me a screaming deal. I do love my 17 but miss my 11. Now I wish I kept both. The 17 looks a little soft but I got used to that. The extra four miles to the gallon eased the pain.
Have you opinion, BUT I see and know why you DID NOT MEANTION GAS MILEAGE, because on the old ones, MPG sucks! In 201, I tried out a Ridgeline, drove it to my house and back to dealer....20 miles, according to the mpg meter on the vehicle, it showed about 13 mpg! OUCH! Needless to say, I passed on that one. I have drove more than a few of the new ones, and have got in the mid 20s or better. I also drove many of the old ones doing dealer trades and you were lucky to get 20mpg. Mpg kept me from the old Ridgelines. Actually, I ended up buying a 2014 tacoma, I have averaged around 18mpg on it, with 21 on the road. I am looking to get a new vehicle, and am undecided on a Tacom or Ridgeline. I want the sensing/safety features but no available in anything but a AWD RTL-E or black edition. Tacoma on the other hand, has them on all models! Probably going with a Tacoma as I do not want a awd or four wheel drive as it knocks around 2mpg off your mpg.

As a former Honda owner who had excellent service (100 k + on all of them ).with minimal repair cost the only thing I don't like is the COST. I know they're a quality vehicle but they aren't the value they once were.

I have a 2018 RTL-E and I did not see a single difference between mine and this one.
I have exact Ridgeline, but 2017. Everything single thing is identical, except it looks like the back doors may open about 5-10 more degrees on the newer year.
That's really my only complaint.. it's great that the seats fold up, but it's hard to fit larger objects due to doors not opening wide enough.
so how much will it tow? My Jeep grand Cherokee will tow 7000 lbs!

I have the 2017 RTL-e model. Love it. Bought the custom front end for it, which looks nicer, IMO.

I like the side-opening tailgate, but I do wish it could be locked open. If you are on anything short of perfectly flat ground, it tends to close on you. The collision warning system is also a bit sensitive, going off on tight corners. The only other place this falls down compared to other new trucks is the infotainment system. I rent a *lot* of vehicles when I travel, and Honda's infotainment system is behind all but the most spartan low-end systems.
I've never used the truck bed speaker. The only thing I've had connected to the tow hitch is a support bar for 12' construction lumber.
I used to have a Pilot. Like the Pilot, I love that I can park this anywhere, including the lowest level of the airport garage (with very limited clearance height), where this actually spends a fair bit of time. It also fits in the office garages in DC where a full-size truck can't due to either height or the tight turns.
Unlike the pilot, I can take this on trips to the dump or to Home Depot without ruining the interior. I do flip the passenger-side rear seat up for interior storage. It's usually up, unless I have the kids in the truck with me.
I've also driven it on long-distance trips including New England and Toronto (from the DC area), and numerous trips into DC, to the beach, and more.
No problems in the two years I've had it (bought in late 2016), except for crashing the infotainment system hard once due to something strange with Apple CarPlay.

I could not even order it online at that time ..
Present (Sep. '19) the manufacture website has not changed and still doesn't work fully .. (features don't load)

My local honda dealer didnt have the color I wanted. They went out their way to get me one but had to wait for a week. I told the salesman, if he's gonna get me one from other dealerships, he'd better put it on a flatbed cause i dont want any miles driven. Had it new with only 7mi on it.

To tell u the truth the new ridgeline looks like a toy I would put my 06 RTL against that toy not worth the money

CERTAINLY NOT THE GAS MILEAGE! Fixed in the new models! I drove a 2wd one on a 115 miles trip and it said it was getting almost 29mpg and another trip in a AWD one 250 miles, showed over 25 miles per gallon. Try that in the old models, wont happen.

I drove past a Ridgeline on my 2018 Tacoma test drive and it looked pathetic next to the Toyota Tacoma. Why not make the Ridgeline more truck like than SUV? No wonder why sales for the Ridgeline are rock bottom. Ford will come out with Ranger soon and Honda soon will be forgotten. Honda has a long way to go in this market.

Tiny truck bed? Check out a Tacoma. Talk about tiny. It's almost useless. The RL can hold full sheet goods, plus has that trunk.
90% of trucks are driven by people who do NOT use them for work trucks..only to get back and forth to WORK, and as a grocery getter or soccer & hockey mom transport. So, it fits the bill for those who buy them. DUH!
Oh, I forgot to ad...go take a look at aTacoma bed and then a Ridgeline(new model) and you will see that you have to let a sheet of plywood hang half in the truck over the top of closed tailgate, on the Honda, a sheet of plywood can lay flat in the truck with the tailgate down, with room to stack a lot of lumber. i have a 14 Tacoma and know this. i am looking to get a Ridgeline for a better ride, more power and better use of bed when I need it. Both will be my daily driver. Oh did i not mention better mileage.
Ever wonder why the Ridgeline is the worst selling truck in it's class? Check the sales figures and see for yourself.
They don't do fleet sales for large companies. They have a target market. These are not service vehicles for the masses. What they do better than the others is their parts content, which is 78.5% made in USA or Canada. Only the Ford F-150 beats it at 85%. Most of the others are in the 50% range.
