He calls himself dumb and puts himself down and that he's a bum and Adrian says she doesn't think he's a bum. Stallone wrote incredible scripts. But Apollo has a chip on his shoulder, something to prove to the people and to himself, and has the heart of a warrior... so he goes toe-to-toe with Rocky and loses as a result.
Oh yeah, recap at the start of a film, well, back then next-to-nobody had VCRs, pretty darn expensive in the '70s, so no re-watching a film again until it came out on one of the three networks and that would be a couple of years later, unlike today where a film can be in theaters and out on video in weeks. Since movies use to take about two years to complete, thus you would need a racap of events to bring people back up to speed to what happened the last time, but it also helps for new viewers to see what happened in the previous movie.
Technically, Rocky and Rocky 2 are basically the same movie, just in two parts. At least that's our excuse for trying to choose between the both. Lol! (1955)? Last but not least you got to watch Terminator 2 (1991)' one of the best sequels ever.
Oh, it's a recap. The reason why so many sequels in the late 70s and early 80s started with a recap is because they couldn't assume that the person saw the first movie. You take home video and streaming for granted, but back then, they could not. Every movie had to be standalone. Related to that, many sequels in the 80s picked up right where the last movie left off. The Karate Kid 2, Star Trek 3 and 4, and the early Rockys all did this because Hollywood had to assume that the person had not seen the movie before it. To this day, there are old filmmakers that still feel like a movie has failed if it's not self-contained. This is one of the main reasons that people like James Cameron and Martin Scorsese hate the Marvel movies.

The first Rocky won best picture, not this one. But yes, it is great and has funny, poignant, original dialogue and amazing characters and character interactions.

I guess Rocky likes animals but I kind of suspect that he only bought those turtles as an excuse to keep seeing Adrian at the pet shop lol. You also made a good point I never thought about before. Why wasn't creed as hurt as Rocky was after the first fight? I guess that's just how the cookie crumbles? I guess he has to look weak to make his win feel that more rewarding from a writing perspective.
