    I just did mine and used both the K&N cleaner at first but then filled an empty old pool chlorine bucket with water and Dawn dish soap. Let the filter soak for almost an hour with also swishing the filter back/forth for the soapy water to flow through. Just by soaking the old pink oil came to the surface, dirt to the bottom. Then thoroughly rinsed with kitchen faucet and sprayer, and placed on some paper towels to air dry. After dried used the oil on the bottom side where the air comes in and used a lighter coat this time. Last time I'd oiled both sides heavily and it cost me to have a shop clean my intake and throttle body of the black gunk from the excess oil I used from before.

    A few corrections. Wash from clean side out so you are not forcing particles from the dirty side into the clean side. NEVER use WD-40 as a lubricant. It is for displacing water only. You need to have oil on the filter. Your filter will be completely dry in about two days. It should not be run this way.

      I totally agree on going paper air filters, but you should definitely consider the KN cabin air filter, I absolutely love mine, it's been in use about 3 years now. the oil in the recharge kit goes a long way and is good for well over 10+ application/recharges done every 6 months. I got mine when I was at the store for a cabin air filter, I saw the cheapest one was a $27 paper one- so i went with the $40 KN one. It works well too, last time i cleaned mine the water ran black after only 6 months.

    The filter should’ve had a few minutes for the Simple Green to melt the grease, before rinsing. The filter should’ve been flushed in the opposite direction of the airflow ;
    from the engine side out towards the intake side. Oiling after Drying thoroughly :
    WD 40 isn’t going to last long because it’s a penetrant, not a lubricating oil which is formulated to hold on to parts. WD 40
    is intended to migrate. Lubricant oil is intended to hang on.
    I’m not yet sure which oil I will use on my cleanable filter. I think I’m going to find a method to use regular motor oil.
    But, there is a spray oil manufactured
    by 3 in 1. I think that will be too light of an oil to last well, but maybe open the filter box periodically and give the filter a fresh
    dampening of spray oil.
    That seems good to me .

    I guess the viewers can assume what's good and bad in this video, since they have a K&N filter, I will only be using the simple green non-toxic degreaser since i have it in my kitchen but not the WD40, of course K&N would not recommend anything but their own products aka "marketing". Humans can get very complicated. Good Video!

    Now I do use household products to clean it. I soak mine in a degreaser for about a hour. Then I sit in on the deck for about a hour to let in dry in the sun. Then I use the oil in my K&N kit. DONE. Been using K&N for years no problem. Well a few days after clean I clean my mess air flow sensor.

    This is a classic case of "a litte learning is a dangerous thing". As others have noted, NEVER rinse a filter from dirty side - that only helps to push dirt into the filter then possibly the engine, if those particles arent thoroughly rinsed out. Also, WD-40 is a crappy lube because it contains petroleum distillates which are a solvent. Others have suggested using heavy motor oil, ATF or even vegetable oils.

  • @mattkenney2637
    @mattkenney2637 3 ปีที่แล้ว +6

    Cleaning this way is fine. Cleaned from engine side towards airbox side first, correct. Light spray from other side, no biggie. Like everyone else commenting, I'm not an expert, but the WD-40 makes me slightly nervous.

    I definitely would not substitute the oil. yes, we all know the cleaner is probably no different than your super cleans. the oil however is critical to the actual functioning of the filter- i would use the official oil. I use kn cabin air filter, i love it btw, but the oil in the kit is good for well over 10+ applications maybe more. you only need about 15 squirts of the oil and the bottle is not small for how its used.

    WD-40 is a water displacement liquid. It does have some lubication properties, but as far as using as a lubricant, I wouldn't. Sure, it would help clean the air filter for sure, and MIGHT do provide some sort ... of oil to the cotton in the K&N, but I think it is too thin, and it's not really designed to be used in that way. In a pinch, oh ya, sure, but if you're doing routine maintenance on your vehicle/motorcycle/whatever, you need something that resembles the properties that K&N's red oil has. Just saying, WD = water displacement... .

  • @MrYingvar
    @MrYingvar 2 ปีที่แล้ว +3

    WD 40 has Silicone in it and a drying agent that hardens the petroleum products it contains.The reason to oil the filter is to wet down the dust making the filter more effective .Also if your ride has an oxygen sensor in it, Silicone will render it useless. Give you a shout out for just your effort.

So I got some Super Clean. I sprayed some on the tires with the foaming spray bottle and what do you know, dirt started to come off the tire EVEN WITHOUT using a brush. So my conclusion is Simple Green is a VERY WEAK cleaner/degreaser compared to Super Clean, at least when it comes to dirt on tires.

      WD-40 does not have the ability to grab onto the dust particles -- the K&N Filter Oil has a stickiness to it that grabs and holds the dirt, keeping it from entering the MAF sensor and/or the throttle plate area.

      It's not so much that ONLY K&N oil can be used. More that you should use the CORRECT oil, rather than just any old oil. Since K&N don't tell us what the tech specs of the oil are, then we cannot know what we COULD use as a correct alternative. Thus, any suggestions for alternatives are mere guesswork and may or may not be any good.
      A bottle of K&N oil lasts for loads of cleans and so works out cheap enough I'm not gonna starve, so I'm sticking with it.

    1 Water before
    2 not enough cleaner
    3 not enough time to brake down oil before rinse
    4 rinse with pressure
    5 not let it dry before oil
    6 wrong type of cleaner for cotton with oil
    7 wrong type of oil to stay on filter and to catch dust
    8 apply WD-40 wrong way to fast not touch up
    9 everything was wrong
    10 even more I didn’t catch (just don’t do this)
    WD-40 will not stay on air filter and wii suck the oil pass sensitive mass air flow will make bad gas mileage
    Nothing terrible bad but everything was wrong

    I thought the smell of "Green" brand air filter cleaner smelled familiar, so I went and took a whiff of simple green. I'm pretty sure it's the same thing they sell you for $17, although you do get the green oil.

    Next you should do a video on how you can use water instead of gasoline ,it will save you a ton of money at the pump, and seriously you could possibly use some Dawn soap and then get some fiber filter oil and spray on there.And like everyone says wash it from the inside out

    • @gabrial3377
      @gabrial3377 ปีที่แล้ว

      Water fuel? Easy. Find a stainless steel canister, gasket sealed cover. Drill 2 holes, more gaskets nuts tighten. and two zink rods. To one inch from bottom. Have good flash back arrester between can and PVC valve or nearest to air intake. Hook up to battery. And other complicated wiring like a good lit on and off switch, or piggy back in ignition fuse switch. Fill with either baking soda and pure water. Or mild lye. Poof, u have hydrogen, which runs a vehicle just fine. Water power at its best. Loads of videos out there on the subject.

    Pro Tip. NEVER EVER rise a K&N Filter from the Intake side. You will push Dirt into the Filter Media (Denim). Read the instructions! This is the absolute WRONG WAY TO CLEAN a washable Filter. Period.

    • @stephenmartinez1

      who cares which way it is rinsed? if you're using something like super clean or simply green you are not going to be cheap with your spray- it will get all the dirt out no matter what side it is on. you see the water running clear so what makes you think there is still dirt inside that will somehow make it into your engine?

    K&N has 2 versions of the filter oil: 99-5000EU (international
    market) & 99-5000 (for US market). MSDS says 99-5000EU contains
    non-hazardous mineral oils, 99-5000 contains carcinogenic petroleum
    distillates. So K&N is peddling toxic substances while it's already
    got safe alternatives.
