This helped me learn a little more about how to take care of my air filter and air housing. Thanks. As a woman, it's nice to learn auto mechanics from another woman.
I think you mean you run the water through the opposite of the airflow direction, to dislodge the particles of grime and not further drive them into the filter media.
Brake cleaner will dry that plastic out quick and have it dry rot before too long, also just wipe the oil around the seal with your finger to help it seal better instead of wiping it dry and that’s a lot of oil to be using on that filter other than that, nice job
YES !!! only spray the outside part of the filter and NOT the INSIDE. Otherwise the oil can get sucked in the intake and damage your air mass sensor. The outside is the side that traps the dirt and contaminants using the filter fabric and oil. The inside stays clean. If you're in doubt, you can spray the inside, just a tiny bit a VERY LIGHT film, do not saturate. Let it dry in the sun for a couple of hours and instal. Be sure that when you clean it, spray both sides with the solvent but rinse from the INSIDE pushing out. You don't want the dirt to go through the fabric. It is on the outside of the filter, let it stay there and push it out with a steady stream of water. I hope this helps. Cheers.
Check out a comparison test that was done on a number of air filters on the Project Farm channel. It was very well done. Shocking to me, K&N was one of the worst for large and small particle filtration. Bums me out as I am now considering taking it out of my truck. I'd rather have engine life over the small uptick in HP and acceleration...
@@Novagunner Losing filtration "power"? If you go 3-6months without checking your air filter, you're asking for problems! When it's full of dirt from not being cleaned you'll notice a lack of power since you don't like lifting up the engine hood every 3-6months 😂!

does it matter which direction the pleats are oriented? in this video the filter is installed so the pleats are oriented vertically. i've seen videos for a standard paper filter install where the filter is oriented horizontally.
The oil is what catches the dust because it sticks to the oil, and the actual filter keeps bigger particles out. And the oil is just air filter oil it doesn't really matter what brand you use
I brushed the intake side under running water, I lightly hit the flat intake side of the filter against a flat surface and dislodge a lot of solids off the filter. Then used pressurized air from’ clean’ side through the dirty’ side. Dried and oiled. Cleaned the box. Done👍
I have been using K&N for years now and I just can't see myself using any other type of filter. Let me tell you something, I have never seen my filters get ever half dirty as this one. this one was really bad. I notice on my cars better fuel and little bit better on exhilaration with K&N. Totally worty the money.
When I clean and dry mine, I always have some red left over in various places from the old oil. Is this normal? I can never get all the red out from the old oil.
Hey Sue, I love your dedication to the little things.. I've seen soooooo many people wrestling with those case clips, and here you show how it's done with one finger :-) I normally wipe down / clean all components too.... but I paid for the vehicles :-)
Wow… You washed it through the wrong way!!!… and the proof is flicking up and sticking to the wall after you have rinsed it and you are shaking it dry… As if you can rinse the dirt “through” the filter…. The filter separated the dirt by its size not allowing it through…. So how do you expect to wash it through that same way?? …. ALWAYS rinse from the clean side to the dirty side first, then finish by rinsing the other way.
totally depends, if you're driving dusty logging roads, you'll be cleaning it a few times a year... just inspect it! I've seen filters get completely clogged up after a weeklong wheeling trip on very dusty/dry terrain mid-summer
There's no way will say on a k&n filter to be cleaned after 100.000 miles. Maybe 10.000 miles if you live in the cleanest area ever with no dust, leaves, bugs, humidity. I clean mine every 6.000 miles when I'm also changing the engine oil. It's a 30 min job.
Ada L yes they’re designed to be washed, unlike the paper filters. Just make sure when you hose it, do it from the clean side to the dirty side. Otherwise you will push all the dirt in the wrong direction.
I put a K&N filter on my 2013 Hyundai Elantra. I noticed that there is another filter that is attached to it. So, there are 2 air filters in a 2013 Hyundai Elantra?
the dust particles don't stick to the filter. They tend to just form a lump at the bottom of the filter as the filter is not sticky due to lack of oil.
Because it allows for the engine to continue running while you're still in drive. It allows for torque multiplication when the torque converter isn't locked up also.
if the filter is really that bad, wash it three times, instead of super saturating one time? and way too much oil on filter, it goes through mass air flow and oil residue will ruin your mass air flow sensor you always have great video not this one though!
I’d recommend not using a K&N filter on modern cars as the oil can ruin your O2 sensor. They also don’t work as well as a standard paper filter. On race cars they work great though.
It is very important how you re-charge it. It is supposed to have a thin film of oil. It doesn't need to be so saturated that can fly onto the MAF sensor. Also, you're NOT supposed to spray oil on the filter side towards the MAF side of the intake. The oil stops the dirt using the fabric. The inside doesn't need anything, no dirt is going the opposite direction and no need for the oil..
My car I bought as used 2008 Yaris came with K&N filter. I'm going to wash it since it's pretty dirty, but I don't have the speical K&N wetting oil spray. And I do not want to pay too much for it. Do you think it's okay to just spray WD40 on it?
This video is about Cabin Air Filter (i.e. the filter that clean the air that gets into car's cabin). Can the engine air filters also be washed (without damaging them)?
You can mess up your MAF sensor and some may get sucked into the engine, resulting in major repairs down the line. Idk about your car/truck, but the MAF for my truck is $200.
do NOT run the water through the way the air goes, as she says. thats just stupid. you're pushing dirt all the way through the filter. to do so, you're opening up small hole and making them bigger
I used this K&N one time and it damaged my air flow sensor. It was the costly lesson learned just to save few bucks. When I sold the car I asked the guy if he wanted this filter, oil can and cleaner for it. He said no. That's how bad it is. Maybe it is good for an old engine that do not have an hi-tech air sensor.
