OK, tried it out with the cleaner you recommended on a five year old Subaru engine that's never been cleaned. I made sure to cover the alternator and the main wire harness connection. Blew out the leaves and loose dirt with a leaf blower, sprayed it down with cleaner, waited 90 seconds, then washed it off, I spent an extra 8 minutes using a wheel brush and scrubbing the big areas, then blew it off with a leaf blower. Looks great, and the car started up and ran just fine. Neighbor decided to do the same thing on his BMW 340, it turned out great and started/ran just fine (BTW, we both took off the plastic engine covers, to better wash the whole engine). As you noted - DO NOT let the cleaner sit more than 60 seconds on your engine, or it will get sticky and not wash off easily. Thank you for the great video!

I've been detailing for over 30 years and I always use a pressure washer demonstrating on a car that is almost brand new of course it's going to look new when you just use a little mild degreaser and spray it off and wipe it down. On an engine that all the plastic is dried up in starting to fade you absolutely need dressing, I've never had an issue

For those worried about using water, just don't get water directly into your air intake or spray heavily onto electrical connectors. Just use a light spray that you would for watering plants to rinse your cleaning products off. And for those that don't have anything to dry the water off, I just used a few rags to get as much off as I could then I just started the car, closed the hood and let it idle for about 10 minutes, you'll hear squeaking probably from your belts for a little bit but that'll go away. Once I left it to dry a little I took it out for a wee drive to get rid of any small pools of water.

1991 GMC Syclone 22,000 miles and 2001 Pontiac Trans Am Ram Air WS6 104,000 miles. I just pop the hood latch before I wash them just to have the gap for a little extra soap and water to run inside and let the water go where it will. After I’m done washing it, I have separate engine towels I use to dry the entire engine compartment. I open the hood up, dry all the wiring, plastics, hoses, body panels and as a towel gets wet I use it on the block wherever any dirt may be. It takes me a good 15-20 minutes to wipe it down. I use Zep dressing on all the hoses and plastics. I regularly get compliments on how they both look brand new, especially the Trans Am with all that mileage on it. I’ve owned the Syclone since 1996 and it was cared for by the original owner so it looks good. I bought the Trans Am new and have have done this process every time I wash them. Any used car I have ever had for my everyday vehicles, I’ve used Simple Green on the engine compartment. Always loved SG !!

Your engine only had a light coat of dust on it before you began. The edge of the red battery post cover is actually shining through the dust in the shot before you sprayed the engine down. Using Dawn dish detergent in hot water with a pump sprayer, and letting it sit for 20 minutes before rinsing will clean everything off the engine, even built up grease around an oil filter or filler cap... at a fraction of the cost of your cleaner.

Agree. The best thing to do is stay away from washing the engine bay. So many problems can arise from spraying cleaning solutions and water on it, especially on older vehicles. I understand people doing this to show cars, etc but on an everyday driver it's not wise. I do the same as you but I use a mild engine cleaner and a cloth. Unlike body cosmetics, nobody is going to see underneath the hood. As for me it's not worth the financial risk to wash an engine.

So I've only used this pressure washer one time. th-cam.com/users/postUgkxfQauTxLT0JLSvqkq10rD79TU4k0Vz8zP The one time I used it, it worked great. I recently had new siding installed but kept the old gutters and small areas surrounding my house that weren't replaced so they looked horrible and dirty because of the new siding. I needed to get it cleaned asap. When I used the pressure washer, man it just melted all the dirt and grime that was on those areas of my house. I used that krud kutter soap and it was over after that. Easy to assemble, feels durable, very simple to use. Also, I purchased a used one to save money and there was absolutely nothing wrong with it. I want to get more use out of it so I think I'll be washing the cars and update this comment as time goes on.

I've done numerous engine Detailing. Purple Power works great for those real nasty engine compartment. You need some agitation on heavy Grease and stains. On old school cars, you may also cover the distributor. Most cars, water does not affect engine afterwards. I have had a few where it would run rough for a few minutes until completely dried. Don't aim a strong Pressure jet of water to any of the Electric Modules as a precaution.

Late to the game BUT tell how to do this after a NorthEastern Winter that following spring. When stuff is covered in salt and etc. Me, personally, used to be a detailer, I always used HOT water if the engine is hot. Cold water is the engine is cold. Always covered the alternator.

Don't spray your engine even with a bottle. Get a rag and a bucket of soap water, Take a rag, dip it in the soap water, squeeze out the water, and wipe down the dirty parts. Clean the rag constantly. It takes time but guarantees that no water gets into electrical comps.

Are you sure it wont damage some computers and electricals while rinsed it with water?im a bit hesitant it might damage electrical because of the water

Most modern cars have no issues and I have done it this way for over 10 years with no problems. But you need to use it at your own risk since I can't see your car or situation.

@@raizensheng Another thing you can do is to use the plastic bag like I did to cover your fuses, etc. This was you can have more protection.

I've cleaned every engine on every veicle I've owned bought them all brand new and at last count it was 12 truck after a drive that gets the engine heat Guage up to normal i spray everything with foamy engine bright even the underside of the hood let it sit 15 minute's and spray it down real well with the garden hose starting with the hood i use to just leave the hood up to dry with the motor running now i use my leaf blower once its dry and old rag and armoral on the plastic parts and it looks like the day it was installed after 40 years i have never had a truck not start right up first try and i have no damadge to wires or hoses all the lights work and just to get any over spray i usually wash and wax right after i can understand some people worrying about it but my father did it constantly and you could eat off his engines you decide.
