If someone told me six months ago that I would get excited about a TH-cam video explaining some history of the Gillette razor, I would told them they must be drunk. Thanks for taking your time in making this video.
Love the old commercial in the intro! Exciting to see what you guys can turn up now that we are in the TV age for these razors! As always great info and I look forward to the next video.
I learned to wet shave using a black handle flair tip, and I simply love it. Excellent for newcomers. My older boy also learned on it. We both now use slim adjustables, but since I also have a wet shaving channel, I do have the flair tip in my rotation. Is by far the best mild vintage razor that I own.
Borys Hawrysz I’m going to get one soon . I just had a shave with my Falre tip with a Personna Red and it’s a great Razor+Blade Combo . I had over 25 safety razors but needed to down size. Well Matt you hit Home Run with this U-Tube as I was considering a Flair. Now I want one more because you told me what I need to know. I want Non Color Tip, the Sand Colored Case 3:13 , finding Razor is my new mission.
It's 3AM and this is at least the fourth video (tonight) that I've watched on the history of Gillette razors. Never would I have imagined such an expansive history -- nor would I have thought one man could know it all. Amazing history and impressive knowledge.
Every single video, without fail, my eyes always go straight to the three Super Speed display racks. I’ve got one pristine rack for the black tips in styrene cases, and one beat-up red tip rack. But my dream is to own all three like Matt’s got. Someday...
I am really enjoying your Super Speed Video series. This would truly be my Dads era of shaving. Great to go down this journey through history! And how Cool is it that this is how I shave now! Thanks and have a Great weekend!👍😊
I have a '57 flair tip that belonged to my wife's dad. It's my daily shaver. Feels good in the hand and gives a great shave. My dad had a couple of Super Speeds in his rotation. I haven't seen them since the early '80s. Now he's gone & so are they.
I have a 1954 second quarter Flair Tip that was my first vintage and a birth year razor for my father. A tad too aggressive so I'll need to pick up a Blue Tip at some point.
I have a 1959 Super Speed Flare Tip that was a find of a barely used one (sadly without the case) and of my many modern and vintage razors when coupled with a feather blade is my BEST shaving razor. Very mild yet a very good shaver. Love it!
Saw one of those displays on eBay recently for $1000...LOL. So cool to have the counter displays full of razors, a true collectors item. Kinda thought this was Gillette's attempt at "adjustability" in the beginning, didn't take long before they actually did the adjustables. Nice video again Matt👍 Keep em coming. Enjoy!
My ‘55 red tip is easily my favorite, especially loaded with a Feather blade. Just such an efficient shave. I still want to get ahold of a nice slim adjustable, but I can’t see it completely supplanting the red tip for most of my needs.
Ahh, one of my absolute favorite razors, the flare tip super speed. Just a perfect razor in my opinion. I also have the English version which is slightly different, though just as good.
I’m so glad you posted this video. I recently purchased a fat boy on EBay and it came with the wrong case. I had thought the case was for a super speed and after seeing this video I was right. Ironically I was looking to purchase a period correct case for my super speed, and then I found out that the case I bought with the fat boy was the correct period case! Two birds with one stone situation! Thanks for the knowledge and showing these awesome vintage products Matt!
Very cool Matt, love these videos especially with the old tv and print ads, keep these vids coming, wish Gillette would go back in time and offer these types of razors again:)
thanks for the info.new to collecting.xmas de razor kit gift got me started serious shaving.am needing these history lessions/collector tips/etc.keep em coming.
Hi Matt, another great video, thanks. You restored at 3rd Q 1956 red tip for me and I love it. In comparison to your Rex adjustable that I also have, what adjustment number on the Rex would the red, flare and blue tips correspond to?
Hello Matt,,,,,thumbs up on the video,,,, so when did the Black tip get introduced into the world of Gillette's super speed's of razor history ? ,,,,, I thought the 3 special super speeds that came out with the painted flair tip ends were the Red Tip , Black Tip & Blue Tip and the Chrome Tip was just the typical regular Super Speed razor Gillette normally sold since they started selling super speeds ?
Great video as always! It’s so sad you don’t have a service center outside the US. I have this slim adjustable that really needs restauration but no one over here (Belgium) does that...
This was my gateway drug into vintage razors. I'm 24 and I'm really wondering how the cartridge took off. Wish someone had told me about saftey razors sooner. Love these videos, they remind me of a time I never knew - especially the advertisements lol
The Red Tip is my go to razor. Still not my “favorite”, that goes to the Super 89, but I reach for the Red Tip most often. Perfect for my beard and a nearly flawless bit of construction and engineering 👍🏻💈
What about the black barreled flare tip? Is it going to be regular blade gap/angle? Also what years were the black handles produced? I have a code Y1, not sure if they were produced at the same time as Black Beauties.
I have a darker blue case that does NOT have the blue tip on the handle. Based on the date code, I believe this is a 1953 version. Do you have any info on what I may or may not have? I bought it as a US military kit. Thanks.
Love your videos Matt! I'm a newbie in the vintage wet shaving world and I would ask an info: Does the regular flair tip have the same head of the 40' style super speed? Thank you!
I love my Super Speeds, Slims, and Fatboy. What are the chances Gillette would come out with a solid brass nickel-plated Super Speed 2.0? Too cost prohibitive?
I’ve definitely seen black tips for sale on e bay , but according to your video these on came flair tip , red tip and blue tip .. so are black tips something customers did to modify they’re razors ?
Thanks for the informative video, Matt! I have to find myself a good red tip; the restoration your guys did on my D3 "TV Special" is nothing short of miraculous. Hope you have a great week!
I apologize Matt for not asking my question clearly. 🙃 What I was trying to ask about was the handle of this razor. It has a more chrome than nickel look. What is it plated with? Thanks! You are the razor guru!!! Rick
I have a Gillette Flare Tip „Rocket“. No Data Codes and just Gillette and Made in England. Is it called Gillette Flare Tip „Rocket“ or Gillette Flare Tip „Rocket“ Super Speed? Unfortunately I can not find anything about this on the internet. When were the razors made for England approximately, finally I can not trace it via the codes. Thanks for response and Greetings from Germany. 🙏
Outstanding video, Matt. I love using these razors. Would the blue tip be considered a rarer razor since the aluminum body is more fragile than the other versions and may not last as long? Also, do you have any plans to do a video on the versions made in England - the Rockets? Keep the videos coming!
Hi there- Blue tips in good condition are harder to find than the others yes. I have no English Gillette razors in my collection and really don't know much about them. Will consider it down the line... I would need to get very busy buying some up however ;)
I have the "Medium" Flair Tip and case. Got them for FREE!!! Can't beat that even with a stick! :D In fact, got the razor, case and blades(well just one blade in the blade case)at the time I acquired them. Talk about Good Luck!!! ;-)
Hi matt, thanks for the great video. I'm very interested in the Gillette Super Speed, could you please recommend super speed for a men like me with a thick beard hair!
LOL. I see the title and proudly think... I have all three and even both TV specials. I got this.... O ya. The whole tower... all three towers. WOW. You got this.
A flash from the past...seeing the parrot in the add at 4:12. If I remember correctly it’s name was “Poly” and Gillette”s catch phrase became “How are you fixed for blades?”
I bought a flare tip a couple of years ago and was amazed that the butterfly doors still opened without any problems. Gillette was mass-production at it's finest.
I am superhappy I have a Blue Tip in good condition bought at a good price. I know it's not rare, but it is fine :-) I also have the regular from before and it's in my rotation. And also a '53 Superspeed before the flare tips.
My '57 Flare Tip just arrived from eBay. I'm looking forward to giving it a go. One of the wings doesn't quite fall all the way open at the end of its travel--both operate smoothly while the screw mechanism is in effect--but I'm the same age and not all of my parts work as smoothly as they once did, either. Their may be a Revamp in its future. I also have the King C. Gillette DE from Walgreens, so that blade is my reference. I'm ordering your Sensitive Skin blade sampler. Thanks!
My trio just arrived today from Razor Emporium
If someone told me six months ago that I would get excited about a TH-cam video explaining some history of the Gillette razor, I would told them they must be drunk. Thanks for taking your time in making this video.
I have all three. The Red Tip is by far the nicest for me. It still gives smooth but very efficient shaves. Great vintage razors.
I have the RedTip and the 1940’s SuperSpeeds. I had a flaretip but didn’t need it.
Love the old commercial in the intro! Exciting to see what you guys can turn up now that we are in the TV age for these razors! As always great info and I look forward to the next video.
I have a couple of each along with black handled. Had a great shave with the blue tip but the red is my favorite of the flare tips.
Just had a shave with a red tip....I like the look of that razor.

Is the made in England Gillette Rocket video coming one day?
Eh never collected them so I don't have them to showcase as a prop. And my knowledge on them is quite limited.
My dad had a red tip when I was a kid. He used Gem blades if I recall correctly
Just had my 1st shave with a Regular Flair tip. It was a great shave. I'm thinking of getting it re-plated
Good choice!
Matt, what a beautiful collection!:) Thanks for the informative video!:) Really enjoyed this one. Very neat to see the 1950s commercial.:)
I restored a 54 third quarter flair tip. Smooth shave!!
I love this series, keep up the good work. This will be a great document for generations to come.

Well Matt you hit Home Run with this U-Tube as I was considering a Flair. Now I want one more because you told me what I need to know.
I want Non Color Tip, the Sand Colored Case 3:13 , finding Razor is my new mission.
Yesterday I got two of these three (both for less than 8 dollars), I only need the blue one
Great video Matt. My three cases actually have Light, Medium, and Heavy made into the clear plastic lid. Don’t see too many like that.
I have a few of these.. there are 2 types of reds (the difference is at the tip of the handle) and I have one of each. Good to have this explained.
Ive got a 54 super speed flared tan saftey razor. Bought it at a junk shop for a couple of bucks. It's a great razor , still using it
I so enjoy starting my Friday mornings with your history videos. Thanks & I hope you have a great weekend. Zac
It's 3AM and this is at least the fourth video (tonight) that I've watched on the history of Gillette razors. Never would I have imagined such an expansive history -- nor would I have thought one man could know it all. Amazing history and impressive knowledge.
Hi Matt- Great installment on the Super Speed razors; thank you! Beautiful razors, all three! Have a great weekend and all the best!
Good vid. 👍🏼 I sure wouldn’t mind paying $1.29 now for one of each. 😋😄😁
Every single video, without fail, my eyes always go straight to the three Super Speed display racks. I’ve got one pristine rack for the black tips in styrene cases, and one beat-up red tip rack. But my dream is to own all three like Matt’s got. Someday...

I came across 2 of them 51 and 52, only wanted $5 for both. They said it was a late 70s model especially with the aluminum handel
Just had a shave earlier today with my Red Tip. Love it!
Matt, thanks for the razor history.
I ordered a 1955 super speed flare tip off eBay. It wasn't that expensive. I hope it works!
Great collection there. Haven’t seen anything this nice yet in the Seattle area. Will need to see if I can find any in the wild
I got my first safety razor a few days ago a blue tip (A2 1955) I love it 😀
I have a 1954 second quarter Flair Tip that was my first vintage and a birth year razor for my father. A tad too aggressive so I'll need to pick up a Blue Tip at some point.
Man you’ve got me all into collecting vintage razors!!!
I wish gillette still made these razors, I managed to get a black handle super speed razor for 9 dollars and I love it.
I have a 1959 Super Speed Flare Tip that was a find of a barely used one (sadly without the case) and of my many modern and vintage razors when coupled with a feather blade is my BEST shaving razor. Very mild yet a very good shaver. Love it!
I need to add the red tip to my trio still.

I got my hands on a Blue Tip last year. It was in great condition and it's still a great shave even after all these years.
Are you going to do a review the
beard blanket
Did you ever do a video of the Gillette rocket made in England? I have one on the way
No
thanks for the info.new to collecting.xmas de razor kit gift got me started serious shaving.am needing these history lessions/collector tips/etc.keep em coming.
What is the black tip and is the SS black handle silver tip from the late 60’s? Did the regular SS only come in the tan case?
I've watched several of these videos several times now lol
Hey Matt. Where does the Black Tip fit in with this trio?
2.5 years beforehand. No connection to the trio. Maybe lead to the idea of calling out the tto knob.
Hi Matt, another great video, thanks. You restored at 3rd Q 1956 red tip for me and I love it. In comparison to your Rex adjustable that I also have, what adjustment number on the Rex would the red, flare and blue tips correspond to?
Where do you get all this from? I am shocked...
Where does the black tip come in, Matt?
The Korean War era 40's style Black Tip (1951-1953) came before the Super Speed Trio when brass was in short supply and more costly.
Great video as always!
It’s so sad you don’t have a service center outside the US. I have this slim adjustable that really needs restauration but no one over here (Belgium) does that...
we are a very small company and it is not economically feasible......yet ;)
RazorEmporium too bad! I’d be glad to help you get started here 😁
This was my gateway drug into vintage razors. I'm 24 and I'm really wondering how the cartridge took off. Wish someone had told me about saftey razors sooner.

Love your videos Matt! I'm a newbie in the vintage wet shaving world and I would ask an info: Does the regular flair tip have the same head of the 40' style super speed? Thank you!
Yes it does!
Great informational video, Matt. I have a Blue Tip and a Black Tip that needs restoration. Do I get a discount for volume??? LOL.
July2019 will take 15% off the entire order
@@RazorEmporium That's wonderful. How do I apply the 15% to my order?
Me interesa la de la tapa azul, hacen envíos a México?
I love my Super Speeds, Slims, and Fatboy. What are the chances Gillette would come out with a solid brass nickel-plated Super Speed 2.0? Too cost prohibitive?

Matt,
Is the Red tip body sealed in rhodium?
Thanks
Rick
There is rhodium under the red powder coating.
I apologize Matt for not asking my question clearly. 🙃
What I was trying to ask about was the handle of this razor. It has a more chrome than nickel look. What is it plated with?
Thanks! You are the razor guru!!!
Rick
By the way, where does the black handle super speed fall among these razors Matt?
patience grasshopper..... :)

Awesome video Matt! Thanks for the education
Great video and info. Thanks Matt.
I'm happy to own a Red Tip with a case, both in good shape!

The red tip of course!
Never heard about weight difference. Didn't know that! Very interesting!👍👍👍
Great video, again. Gorgeous razor display stands. 👍
Matt whats the difference in the cases that have"light, regular, heavy" etched on the clear front? Were these more rare? Years of production? Thanks
I've never gathered official info on this so my guess is just that.
LOL. I see the title and proudly think... I have all three and even both TV specials. I got this.... O ya. The whole tower... all three towers. WOW. You got this.
I love history even razor history!!!!!!!!!
A flash from the past...seeing the parrot in the add at 4:12. If I remember correctly it’s name was “Poly” and Gillette”s catch phrase became “How are you fixed for blades?”
Parrots name was Sharpie.
I bought a flare tip a couple of years ago and was amazed that the butterfly doors still opened without any problems. Gillette was mass-production at it's finest.
Hi i see you have many gilette on the table, may u sell it ?
Yes we sell vintage razors Evey day on our website www.razoremporium.com
I am superhappy I have a Blue Tip in good condition bought at a good price. I know it's not rare, but it is fine :-) I also have the regular from before and it's in my rotation. And also a '53 Superspeed before the flare tips.
I wish Gillette was still the company that it was and were making razors such as these.
Thankyou ,well done sir
As always - another great video (thanks folks). Some day, the coveted t-shirt will be mine! 😆
Razor old ads are interesting to watch.....
My '57 Flare Tip just arrived from eBay. I'm looking forward to giving it a go.
