    In my country, for the cost of a Gillette Pro Glide cartridge pack of 8 I can get a Parker Variant and enough DE blades to last me for weeks.
    Plus, no irritation, ingrown hair, nicks and bumps....and yeah ..no lecture on Toxic Masculinity...
    Just old school straight up shaving experience. 😁

    In my DE journey, I used a cheap Van Der Hagen at first, generic blades from the drugstore and Barbasol shave cream. It got the job done. When I got a bonus from work, I bought the 40’s Super Speed from you, and I started using real shave cream. The shave is great, but the workmanship of the razor is incredible! You people did a helluva job when you revamped it. It’s of high quality.

    Once I went to double edge safety razors I kept asking myself why people moved away from it to cartridge razors in the first place. The difference in comfort and result is not small, it's huge. It has also turned the morning shave from something that I had to do (and quickly), to a ritual that I really enjoy and take pride in. I feel a million dollars when I leave the house with clean, close shave and a nice aftershave.

    Great review, mirrors my experiences. After being disgusted by Gillette’s recent ad campaign, I got a ‘48 SuperSpeed, and then a ‘55 Red Tip which I like much better. A few days ago, I decided the old SuperSpeed hadn’t gotten any attention in a while but didn’t want a mild shave, so I loaded it with a fresh Feather blade. I was done in two passes and no problems later on. It’s definitely a keeper and before too many years, I’ll be giving it to my son when he’s ready to learn to shave.

    I still use my dad's 40s super speed regularly. It is second only to my straight razors, and I judge all my other razors by it. Next month you will be getting that super speed for a revamp service so it is in better than new condition for passing down to my son, I just have to come up with a blade and razor combination to use while it is gone.

    I tried DE shaving back in 2013. My face was getting destroyed. I was using a merkur 23c with astra and shark blades. Only lasted about 3 weeks. Although I picked it back up 6 months ago and haven't touched a cartridge since. Just needed to discover voskhod. Those blades are amazingly smooth

    I used a Sensor back in my late teens and early twenties also (in fact still have the handle and some blades in storage). It was the first cartridge razor with spring loaded blades with a rather delicate design in fact. Do the sensor disposables have spring loaded blades? From the video they seem to be fixed and the head doesn’t pivot like a real sensor either. They seem more like a Trac 2 disposable variant with just the Sensor name. For what it’s worth if I’m not using my de I prefer using the original Trac 2 with generic cartridges which in my opinion are a better shave than the Sensor.

    I agree with you completely! I started DE shaving a year ago and won't go back! I use cartridge razors only for the back of my neck and shoulders. For my face, nothing beats a DE shave! I got off Ebay a 100 pack of DE blades (Wilkinson Sword brand) for only $2.55!!!! I couldn't get one cartridge for that!! Ditch the disposables (bad for the environment too!!), go DE! Much more enjoyable and you will look forward to your shaves not dread them! Great video! Jim

    I have a friend who I introduce to wetshaving with a DE razor a month ago and I gave him statistics like the cost of DE vs. cartridge razors which was a big factor in his trying a DE razor, and I gave him a Van Der Hagen(Weishi 9306e model) that I have but I found out that he still uses a Gillette Mach3 more often than he does the razor I gave him....needless to say I was disappointed with him but I'm hoping he will make a full transition soon. One thing I know is that I will never go back to using a multi-blade razor ever again!!

    I’ve gotten my dad to start using double edge razors. He admits that it’s time consuming and he’ll use a cartridge if he doesn’t have a lot of time but he prefers the double edge. I’ve also gotten a lot of my lady friends to switch to double edge and they love it! I’d also love that shirt

    • @buddhamack1491

      Time consuming? I find it just as fast once you are proficient at holding the right angle, maybe even faster. Prep time isn't much longer with lathering.
      My dad was the same though. Once I educated him that it's not the same as using a cartridge (he was used to pressing hard and would nick himself) he now loves it.

    Those cheap plastic Gillette razors are what I got stuck with at times while in the navy. They would put these weird bumps under my skin like a cyst thing. They hurt me so bad with razor burns no matter what I tried to prevent it. Horrible memories with them.

    I learned from my father to use a de when I was young and back then the blades weren’t the best and I hated it, so I started using disposables and for 40 years hated it also. About a year and a half ago I saw one of your videos and I didn’t even know they still made the de anymore so I purchased a tto and will never use another plastic piece of crap again.. thx for the videos Matt and have a great weekend

  • @lepidotos
    @lepidotos 3 ปีที่แล้ว

    Tugging, yeah. Tugging is what turned me off disposables the first time I used them! Same with electrics. And all my hair would clog my 5 blade I lost somewhere and can't bother looking for. Hopefully the DE I just bought does better!
    "Certainly cheaper than a DE"
    Is it? $0.41/blade, and while the handle isn't necessarily cheap (though vintage Gillettes can be had for a couple bucks on eBay), I just bought 35 Voskhods for $0.14 a blade, could have gone down to 10 cents for 100. $4.85 for the blades and $8 for the razor comes out to the DE being cheaper by the third pack.

    I'm a blonde by birth even though my hair is brown now, But because I was born blond and have fair skin gave me my extremely bad sensitive skin. When I was teenager i was a dirty blonde. So much of the skincare products on the market I can't use because of perfume and chemicals, Now I can have fragrance to curtain degree but stuff like old spice and axe absolutely not, I use to could use old spice (by the way the fragrance wasn't the issue it's the alcohol that's the issue)

    my dad handed me a dirty as hell(black dirt) container with a bunch of old razors to sell on ebay.. I had no idea of the level of values and high demand.. spent a solid 5hrs cleaning them.. ended up with a E4 FBoy(sold today for 65US) , still have a 1912 England for sale.. and yet to list a Red Tip C2, 1970 P_ TTO black, Ladies Blue C4, Schick M24 ... I ruined the Schick Brass 1937 Canada; cause i thought it was lose and took the pliers to it ... lol,smh... The value these things can have if they are in v.good condition and v.clean is mind blowing. I might pull $200 out of them all. .. BUT now after watching all these videos and learning so much i kinda want to keep one. Although I can use a broken piece of glass, and 1/2 the time use a hair buzzer. so . word to ya all. sorry. (Vintage Razors are very Interesting; Dont try learning Marbles.. spent 2days and was still lost, and my head still hurts.)

    No offense, I can't take Gillette seriously anymore. Matt, what's your recommendation for sensitive skin when it comes to cream or soap? I personally get a little reaction from Captains Choice shaving creams. Is TOBS Peppermint a good choice? Also, any tips on shaving around moles? I have two that are somewhat raised and very close to my beard hair. Using a DE razor.

    Thanks for posting yet another great video. On the subject of plastic 'disposables', every year billions are thrown into landfill sites. Over here in the UK, we are made to feel guilty (and quite rightly so) for using throwaway plastic carrier bags because they take thousands of years to degrade. I wonder how long a disposable razor takes to degrade. If people are going to become more environmentally aware, surely the disposable razor companies have a duty to stop manufacturing plastic handles. I used to shave with a Gillette Contour with an aluminium handle back in the '80s and simply replaced the cartridges, not the whole thing, when the blades became blunt. Then again, why not ban all disposable razors and go back to basics with DE safety razors and razor blades?

  • @edwardmiles6513
    @edwardmiles6513 5 ปีที่แล้ว

    It would be interesting to see a comparison between Gillette's first multi-blade cartridge (the Trac II, which Gillette still manufactures in India) and the Super Speed that was current when the Trac II came out (the Black Handle, ca. 1970, I think). Perhaps you could use an early '70s NOS Platinum Plus blade, to really go retro.

    • @edwardmiles6513
      @edwardmiles6513 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      FWIW, I think that the Trac II performs much better than the Sensor does in this video, and would give the Super Speed a better challenge. The Trac II is the only cartridge I'd consider using voluntarily.

    I have tried multiple double-edged razors and various blades and the results have always been bad. lol. Yeah, I've used the pre-shave oils, and all that and I always, always get severe razor burn on my neck. My day is too busy to make a religious experience out of what is effectively taking out the trash in terms of daily duties. I just want a quick, comfortable, nick-free shave. Believe me, I've tried and I've tried and spent way too much money on the endeavor in the process. Just doing reasonably priced disposables going forward I'm afraid. Though I'll still patronize your store because you carry Tabac. ;)

    Matt,
    Two comments:
    First, you commented on the pressure needed on the Sensor razor as “Bad form”, but with that style, it’s the only form that works 🤣
    Second, if you are a minimalist one bag carry on traveler, TSA will frown on you bringing your double edge blades. One is reduced to having to take a cartridge razor like the Sensor or travel with a blade less razor and trust the Walgreens or CVS at your destination has something better than the Van Camp’s Boston Baked Beans Double Edge Blades (Risky at best), so you do need a Sensor or two for traveling, and NOTHING ELSE!
    😊

I got one of those Gillette razors, did a 3 pass shave and was great. Hell I also did against the grain (which I do not do w DE) and NO problems. Try it......their refills are absurdly expensive

      II find its a lot faster if you want it to be. Cartridge razors you need lots of small strokes to avoid tugging and they need to be rinsed a thousand times. A double edge with a sharp blade I can one pass shave most areas of my face except my chin. But I agree, it's not a chore. I have a nice little routine I go through, but it honestly still doesn't take long.

    I still don’t like the cheap disposable razors, but I wanna try to use the safer razor.

    Sweetie for the love of baby Jesus what the razor before the very first stroke don't start dry and then have it only be wet after the first rinse

    As John Flynn wrote, a very important reason to stop using cartrigde razors is the enviroment. Nothing on the plastic razors are reusable and just becomes garbage. And we are already drowning in that! And then you also has a choice in brands. And not just a Gillette monopole. How can the world accept that every store only has one brand??

    These cheap disposable razors are probably just as good as the Mach 3's but such a waste of plastic and the blades are basically useless after one or two shaves.
    One thing is the time it takes to comfortably shave with them is so long as you have to do so many short strokes and rinse a thousand times. With my double edge I can basically one stroke shave areas with a sharp blade.

    Kensurfs son tried R41 once, cut himself up n gave up DE shaving...

    • @MartinOcando
      @MartinOcando 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      He tried the R41 with a feather, and cut himself pretty badly, but it was not a fault of DE shaving, but his for not waiting for his dad to teach him how to do it. Besides, he was never into DE shaving. He was merely in a hurry to go to a job interview and wanted to be as presentable as possible, but as always, if you rush into things, and don't know what you are doing, you'll hurt yourself.

      Silly children, of all the dumbest combinations of razor and blade you can decide to choose to as a beginner that one of the dumbest.

      Don't tell me, I know. Just answered Mark's query, whether I knew abt someone, who tried DE n went back to Mach3 et cetera. Calm down, teacher!

      @@achimkohlhage1328 Oh I'm sorry, I didn't mean to be disrespectful. Sorry if I did. I just wanted to clarify that I think that Ken's son experience does not fit Matt's question. The way Ken told the story looked like he just rushed to try his Dad's shaving stuff without preparation, and more importantly, dedication or commitment, which would have prevented his bad experience. I can say it for the way I taught my sons, they started reading and watching shaving videos, and asking me questions, then I handed them a mild razor and blade to start, which translated in that today they are fully into DE shaving and not going back. Again, sorry if I sounded harsh. It wasn't my intention. It must be that English is not my mother tongue. Peace

      No worries, but nice mentioning. Yr sons lucky, they learned it the right way. My father shaved electric, so I learned it the hard way, like Kens son. All the best.

    I would really reconsider not using TOBS. Really the low end of the British brands, and the Proraso you used last year is above and beyond. Consider Dr. Harris or Penhailgons instead of you insist on a British brand .
