  • A razor that goes by many names, and many misconceptions. Allow us to clear some of them up in this week's video from the Razor Archives!
The Super Adjustable is the longest handled Gillette Safety razor.
The Black Beauty refers only to the black plastic tray version that started circulation in the late 1970's.

Great video, Matt. I own a gold plated 109 that was made in my birth year and quarter (November 1969). I only ever use it on my birthday, so it's a special razor for me. As I get older, I'm amazed at how quickly a year passes. It will only be a few weeks before I can shave with it again, even though it feels like I used it a couple of months ago. I've really enjoyed this series of videos, so thanks for taking the time to post them. Stay safe and well.

Matt👍👍 Another great history lesson from the Professor of the Shave. I got a Super 109(Black Beauty) from 1980 (A1) for my sons birth year/quarter razor, lots of searching but success. Then to add to my own collection, I picked up a Super 109 (W3) and a Super 84 (W3) from 1976, last of the metal bottom versions😉 Thanks for the video, hate that this series is coming to an end. Enjoy!

I bought a Super 109 in 1974, and got rid of it when Trac II razors came out. Years later, missing my Black Beauty, I found one online, and I shave with it now. The only problem is unlike my original Black Beauty, the one I got online didn’t come with the plastic case. My original one had the plastic case with the clear top and white bottom.

I have about 30 of these of all of the various iterations you've shown that I have picked up and you are right, to find one that doesn't have those pock marks is rare. I plan on selling some and will need to point that out to buyers. Also, and you told me this Matt when I sent one in for service, it is very hard to fix them when the TTO knob loosens and separates from the rest of the razor because of the aluminum.

Hi Matt. Thank you for continuing this series. I prefer the Super-84. My example is in superb condition and delivers an excellent shave on setting 5. I liked the Platinum Plus commercial and remember seeing it when I was just 8 years old. The vintage Platinum Plus blades are great; smooth and long-lasting (15 to 19 four-pass shaves per blade). Again, thanks for doing these. Take care.

  • @Foxtrot-jr5qu

I've recently bought a 109 which was part of a shaving kit and it's in really good condition. I have only shaved with Slim and never had the pleasure to shave with a Fatboy, but I must say the 109 really is a bit more aggresive and for me at least a better shaver than the Slim. Such a shame that it doesn't have the same build quality as the slim. I've always wondered if there's a way to make a franken razor between a Slim and a 84 SA to get best of both worlds - more aggressive/efficient and better built razor. I think the thickness of both handles is the same just like the heads are. If I had your equipment, I probably would have tried to do such an experiment lol.

I have a 1971 super 84. Got it on etsy. It doesn't have pock marks on the handle but the black is worn off a little bit. All in all its a great razor. I have a 1967 slim adjustable that needs some TLC. I think i will have it revamped by you guys eventually. One of the safty bars is bent down, needs resurfaced, maybe some new internal parts.

I have both the 84 and the 109 and I have yet to use them. (Update) About two or three weeks after posting my original comment I came across a Gold 109. The only thing I can say is like the Fatboy and the Slim, Where have these been all my life. I enjoy all my razors in one way or another however these four and my 1977 Atra are my go to in a pinch razors. There all set at a 7 or 8 which will give me a quick one pass shave. The Atra fast and out the door.

2:20 - it's anodized aluminum as you said. For corrosion to happen you need to have a bare metal. On pictures you provided i see no bare metal exposed, but I can notice craters. This leads me to believe that this craters not caused by corrosion, but softness of the metal or plastic/nylon. I'm still not sure from what it's made.

I mean they are essentially the same weight, 70g, but I also read black beauty 84 handle feels lighter. Ok so now I know my dad's 109 was from some where between 69-75 but his case was different then the one you showed. Your case has the razorblades in it going vertical with the razor, his was horizontal. I remember a a kid about 5 or 6 my dad had two and when he shave he would put shaving cream on my face take the blade out and I shaved right along with him lol
