The Impossible Revamp: Shocking Before & After Vintage Gillette Fatboy

  • A few months ago I saw one of the worst condition Fatboys on a wetshave forum. Chunks of metal were missing, the plating was completely eroded, patina had turned the razor black, and it had zero function left. Once it was determined that the razor was destined for the trash can, I stepped in and offered to give it a chance in our Revamp service. I say ‘a chance’ because there are limitations that come with vintage Gillette razors and the damage done by water and time.
We take you piece by piece and demonstrate what results you can expect and then a little surprise that can transform any razor… but you’ll have to watch the video to see!
Don't wait until your razor is in this condition to preserve it. We offer our Tune Up service to keep your razor in good working order and the Revamp service to address both mechanical and plating issues. Have a razor that could use some TLC?

You guys did a revamp on the 1966 Gillette Slim Adjustable I inherited from my Father. I chose to upgrade the finish to Rhodium and I was not disappointed. My razor is better than brand new, worth every penny. Keep up the good work.

I’ve seen dozens of videos from this channel over the last few days since I found it. This video came up on my feed today and now I don’t want to buy my first razor and accessories from Amazon like I’d planned. This craftsman ship is awesome. It’s awesome to see this company not only sell the product, but also putting a great amount of time and dedication into it- and that shines through in this refurb process! The attention to specialized detail in any craft is super refreshing and inspiring.

I'm only 21 but share your passion for restoration and vintage quality. Etsy browsing introduced me to the vintage Gillette lineup. Affiliate websites informed me, and you guys 2nded my need to stop using my disposable multi-blade. Invested in a Slim today; normally I trust my skills but due to the venerability and condition of the razor, I'll give your revamp service my support instead. You are doing the right thing in a hungry market, please don't stop!
These videos normally take off on TH-cam, especially under the "Restoration" tag, fyi.

Thank you Matt, my biggest discussion is that plating does not magically remove dents and damage.
That video was great and I am one of those platers with a one litre tank, I have great success and as I’m in England there’s not the hundreds of customers a week that you have.

If you pick it up, you can TIG weld brass to fill in pits and build up metal around edges. For just pitting on flat surfaces, you can solder into them, then plate over the solder.

This should be "required" viewing to manage customers' expectations. Imagine if a customer sent in a gnarly Toggle without extra parts available. 😳 What would the cost of this "extreme revamp service" have been?

    • @RazorEmporium
      @RazorEmporium  2 ปีที่แล้ว +9

Standard price for the service - $99 for adjustable razors in nickel. Parts are generally $20-$25 we each.

Matt👍👍 Outstanding video showing the revamp service and what can be achieved. A piece of trash actually brought back to life before our eyes. Well done brother. The hand of the magician makes the trick work, amazing skills bringing these razors back to glory. I knew there had to be a lot of work done by hand, smallish parts, thin metal, intricate fitting ETC.. I've seen a couple of your revamps and they look brand new, fantastic. Thanks for this service and the quality we receive from Razor Emporium and crew.

Amazing work Matt. I love your videos. I recently sent my F2 “birth quarter” Gillette Fatboy in for a tune up service. It was a one-owner ebay purchase several years back in what seemed pretty good condition (with original case) but had been accidentally dropped a few times (by me)-nothing major over the last several years. The shaving ability had degraded slowly over time where I had not really noticed it. When it returned from Razor Emporium (very fast might ad), 1) it was beautiful and 2) it shaved perfectly, even better than when I first acquired. I wish I had sent it in way back then. You guys kept me updated on the status of the tune-up which was greatly appreciated. I’m a raving fan and recommend sending in all such ebay or otherwise second hand razors in for a tune up. Thanks so much. Keep up the great work!

Amazing job, really. I've found, in flea markets, some razors in even better shape than that one, and I gave for granted that they could not be repaired, that they were gone for good. Turns out I was VERY wrong. If I ever lay my hands in one of those recoverable razors (well, NOW I know they are recoverable), I think the expense of sending the razor to you and have it revamped will be worth it.

That was fantastic, Matt! Thanks for sharing it with us.
I do have a question though; my Slim Adjustable was sent in for the Revamp Service and it's really, *really* difficult to twist that last quarter turn to lock the blade in place. I have three other Gillette Adjustables -- another Slim, a 1960 FB, and a 1970 Super-84 -- and none of them act this way. Is this because the razor was never used (I don't know if it was or not, just trying to figure out the reason for this to be so difficult)? I mean, it gets so hard to turn, it's like it's locked or something. It feels like something is in a bind. But, again, would that be normal if the razor had never been used?
Thanks again for the video and such great services and knowledge.

    • @RazorEmporium

But I have a problem...living in Italy I came into possession of a gold fatboy where the selector makes several turns and then stops, a clear sign that the spring is ruined.
