All of us kids have tried to use the Kamehameha/super saiyan but none of us have tried turning in Gear 5. This just shows that ssj is more well known. Gear 5 has its own unique parts that make it different from the rest.
tbh, g5 does have any move that is iconic, the thing that makes it iconic is the concept, it is also impossible to imitate gear 5 since it requires toon force
i think the thing being overlooked by both sides of the argument is that things take time to genuinely become iconic. other moments are more iconic than gear 5 because it's been around longer and built up more exposure, yet you can't discount the potential that gear 5 has to become one of the most iconic moments in anime because it hasn't existed long enough to develop the same amount of exposure as things like kamehameha or shadow clone jutsu.
Tho you also have to consider that Kamehameha and Shadow Clones are like intrinsic, almost day 1 elements of the series that they come from. There’s a reason people think more of the red Kyuubi mode of Naruto more than KCM II, and why Super Saiyan 1 and 2 are more iconic than SSJ3

My uncle is over 60 years old and still has a dbz android 13 movie on cassette and was asking me one time about anything new in dbz saying he remembers ssj. I think Goku going Ssj for the first time will always be awesome and iconic plus just hit me with so much hype and emotions seeing it for the first time. But with that said Gear 5 Luffy is amazing to me too and personally like the transformation more and will be pretty interesting to see in 20 or so years how people look at Gear 5.

As a Dragon Ball Fan, I honestly fell you. "Iconic," in my opinion, it's a milestone. Something you look back at, and still know, even generations later. IF Gear 5 wants to be on the same level as the golden hair, it'll have to stand the test of time, and still be recognizable, years and years from now. But I honestly feel at this point, they might burn out the gear faster than it was developed.
I got spoiled about gear 5 from it dropped in the manga. i was at dressrosa arc, i was hyped tho but i keep getting more and more spoilers from then till i caught up which was annoying. This didnt happen when ui goku was revealed so that made it even more hype for me plus the stakes was much greater too

SSJ the internet was not even a thing yet or you had dial tone internet, so no one could spoil you. The person who spoiled us about SSJ was Vegeta when he erroneously called Goku a Super Saiyan when he took Recoome down in one hit.
As someone who grew up with DBZ, having watched it in both English and Japanese and read the manga, I consider myself a fan of the series. I can not say it is the greatest story told but there are several scenes and moments that touched me then and still to this day. I personally believe One Piece is a better told story, more complex and rank it higher than Dragon Ball for that. That being said, Bushamo is 100% right about Dragon Ball being more iconic than One Piece. It is a little disheartening that this is even a thing that people are arguing... it really doesn't matter and shouldn't. Dragon Ball has made its mark and nothing will ever really tarnish or replace it. That being said One Piece is doing phenomenal things with its content. They should both be appreciated for that.
Forget SSJ, UI is far more iconic than Gear 5, the moment you hear that first sound of the UI theme you already know what it is, it was everywhere in memes and parodies.
One Piece is famous within the Anime community, but Dragon Ball is famous in the ANIMATION COMMUNITY, fitness, and nerds in general. Like western VS Japanese animation doesn’t apply to Anime’s like Pokémon and Dragon Ball. Like everyone knows of KameHameHa is and about 40% of the population has seen SSJ represented somewhere.
For something to be iconic it needs to inspire and grow OVER TIME. You can't just claim something to be iconic because it's hyped up in the moment, heck, that's not even iconic. Like I said, for something to be iconic it needs to inspire and become a symbol of some sort. Super saiyan inspired most mainstream transformations making that iconic. Ask someone what they think of when they hear anime transformation, most people will say Super Saiyan. Enough said.

Can I be really candid about this? When Gear 5 came out originally? I hated it. I thought it was dumb and none of those opinions have changed really. I didn't like how Luffy just has a Legendary Devil Fruit that the World Government fears, I didn't like how said Devil Fruit takes away the everyman charm of Luffy being strong without such a Legnedary fruit. I didn't like how Oda had all these years to explain what DF Awakening is and how it works but instead he just had Gear 5 show up as a lame Deus Ex Machina that breaks A LOT of the rules that OP fans slag other series like Bleach and Naruto for doing themselves. (I personally find those particular critiques easy to dispel but that's another conversation) It's not just that, it's the fact that Roger had no DF Powers and he conquered the Grand Line and now I just feel like Luffy will never be better than him because he has a Magical Sacred God Fruit that the WG fears. That's not even getting started on the Gear 5 just having no tension with the lame Looney Tunes Choreography sucking the fun out of every fight as Luffy ragdolls Kaido, uses Regen in Wano, can just make bullshit from his hair and generally have no rules, limitations or weaknesses to make fights have stakes for me. One Piece never changed, I changed. I grew up. I don't need One Piece anymore. But it's because I grew up that I can also appreciate other mangas that a lot of people shit on for what they did accomplish in turn. I'm branching out more and more into more manga and even One Piece's cartoonish fights don't hold a Candle to Mashle which is 8 times shorter than OP but yet 1000 times more memorable and heartfelt in the fight department. So I Hope Gear 5 doesn't break the Internet at all. Sunday will probably come and go and the normies won't notice any difference, while even my grandma can recognize a Super Saiyan.
Super saiyan will stay as the no 1 but the reason why it’s hyped up like this is because of the journey of 1000 damn episodes of it finally being debunked and confirmed. I watched the episode and it delivered mode that my mouth can ask for as it is hype. Toei handled the animation with peak perfection and the fans have no reason to not go crazy bout it as it’s like that good and the resemblance to it being Luffy is nailed. Overall I PERSONALLY think that this was prob more hype that Mui but not as hype as the legendary transformation, the great super saiyan!

I agree. If I asked someone to name the first Luffy transformation who only watched up to End of the Whole Cake Island, the first one they will almost 85% say is Gear 2nd. Gear 4 was more hype because we had no idea it was coming. Troll accounts were barely a thing and it was hard to get spoiled on it if you were following along with the show. Toei and Crunchyroll spoiled the transformation before it aired. Usually that is a bad sign designed to drum up revenue when it is something that is suppose to be shocking. Gear 2 was shocking, Gear 4 was shocking, I went into the episode of Gear 5 knowing what was going to happen because they PLASTERED it everywhere. Though I like it, the transformation itself (not anything that comes next with G5 in future) will not measure up to Gear 2 and Gear 4.....and I would stick to my same argument if Gear 4 ended up being a transformation using toon force. Come to think about it Gear 2 was learned off panel so it was not out of rage. So why these one piece simps saying oh its the only non rage transformation when Gear 2nd is non-rage. Gear 5 at some point in the story is not going to be pulling those bugs bunny gags and get serious when he meets an opponent comparable in power. I kid you not, I once saw a One Piece fan say that One Piece is the greatest manga ever because it has a lot of ugly crying in it. They said that the ugly crying in one piece makes it more emotional and real, setting it apart from other fiction. Even if ugly crying does make something superior, TONS of other media have ugly crying in it so it doesnt even make sense.

I have never watched One Piece and i litterally didn't even know of the existence of gear 5. I saw some clips of Gear 5 and it looks so damn cool i'm not gonna lie, this man is just disrespecting this blue dragon and is so fun to watch his cartoony movements while he kicks the ass of that dragon. But i can't say it's more iconic than SSJ for a lot of reasons. I mean even the design, SSJ is just Goku's hair going in the sky turning yellow, it just screams power, while gear 5 has a cool look but in images alone you can't understand his power, you need to watch it to truly understand (obviously in my opinion as always) so when i see the design i think it looks cool but i won't think about a cartoony guy that can do anything. Every transformation is unique in its own way. Super sayain is unique becasue its iconic and gear 5th is unique becasue i never seen an anime and uses "toon force" as a transformation and its the modern day transformation. I get so frustrated when people say “Dragon Ball is only seen in such high regard because it was the first Battle Shonen” when that’s not why it’s held in such regard. Both the Transformations are great, and Dragon Ball is iconic for the execution as much as One Piece is praised for the execution

In truth, there is nothing that will probably beat super Saiyan in becoming as popular or iconic. It just has the perfect amount of creating a trend to be followed, franchise popularity, and recognition worldwide. But, at face value, I still think that Gear 5 is more UNIQUE than Super Saiyan or Ultra Instinct.

@@bushamo True, Toon Force isn’t as unique as one would asume especially here in the west we’re it originated, but I meant unique in another way. All of the previous Shonen transformations (Correct me if I’m wrong I’m more into specific anime not anime as a whole) make the character turn super serious and the fights and moves following become these dramatic and epic scenes which solidify the seriousness of it all. Gear 5 seems to be a complete 180 of that idea and sets out to make fight scenes goofy and insanely stupid on purpose. Hell, Luffy is outright laughing at Kaido and the ridiculousness of it all in the debut of Gear 5, which is a nice breath of fresh air after him being constantly pissed off like every other shonen character in a final boss fight. That’s what I meant by unique, im not sure we have seen a shonen character reach their peak, face their current most difficult opponent, and be so… happy about it. It’s so weird seeing an anime use such a simple and positive emotion in a fight and reflect it in all he does. (Again correct me if I’m wrong if there are other jovial fighting fucks I missed in anime).
I will always say this, if Gear 5 was as iconic as people made it out to be. It would at BARE MINIMUM be as recognizable and memed as Ultra Instinct. I'm not even a big fan of DBS but you can talk to people who don't even watch Anime much and they're 10x more likely to know exactly what you're referring to if you reference Ultra Instinct. If you're to reference Gear 5, even people who enjoy anime could misunderstand/not get the reference as quickly

All of us kids have tried to use the Kamehameha/super saiyan but none of us have tried turning in Gear 5. This just shows that ssj is more well known. Gear 5 has its own unique parts that make it different from the rest.

i think the thing being overlooked by both sides of the argument is that things take time to genuinely become iconic. other moments are more iconic than gear 5 because it's been around longer and built up more exposure, yet you can't discount the potential that gear 5 has to become one of the most iconic moments in anime because it hasn't existed long enough to develop the same amount of exposure as things like kamehameha or shadow clone jutsu.
Tho you also have to consider that Kamehameha and Shadow Clones are like intrinsic, almost day 1 elements of the series that they come from. There’s a reason people think more of the red Kyuubi mode of Naruto more than KCM II, and why Super Saiyan 1 and 2 are more iconic than SSJ3

I think Goku going Ssj for the first time will always be awesome and iconic plus just hit me with so much hype and emotions seeing it for the first time. But with that said Gear 5 Luffy is amazing to me too and personally like the transformation more and will be pretty interesting to see in 20 or so years how people look at Gear 5.

As a Dragon Ball Fan, I honestly fell you. "Iconic," in my opinion, it's a milestone. Something you look back at, and still know, even generations later. IF Gear 5 wants to be on the same level as the golden hair, it'll have to stand the test of time, and still be recognizable, years and years from now. But I honestly feel at this point, they might burn out the gear faster than it was developed.
I got spoiled about gear 5 from it dropped in the manga. i was at dressrosa arc, i was hyped tho but i keep getting more and more spoilers from then till i caught up which was annoying. This didnt happen when ui goku was revealed so that made it even more hype for me plus the stakes was much greater too

As someone who grew up with DBZ, having watched it in both English and Japanese and read the manga, I consider myself a fan of the series. I can not say it is the greatest story told but there are several scenes and moments that touched me then and still to this day. I personally believe One Piece is a better told story, more complex and rank it higher than Dragon Ball for that. That being said, Bushamo is 100% right about Dragon Ball being more iconic than One Piece. It is a little disheartening that this is even a thing that people are arguing... it really doesn't matter and shouldn't. Dragon Ball has made its mark and nothing will ever really tarnish or replace it. That being said One Piece is doing phenomenal things with its content. They should both be appreciated for that.
Forget SSJ, UI is far more iconic than Gear 5, the moment you hear that first sound of the UI theme you already know what it is, it was everywhere in memes and parodies.

One Piece is famous within the Anime community, but Dragon Ball is famous in the ANIMATION COMMUNITY, fitness, and nerds in general. Like western VS Japanese animation doesn’t apply to Anime’s like Pokémon and Dragon Ball.
Like everyone knows of KameHameHa is and about 40% of the population has seen SSJ represented somewhere.
For something to be iconic it needs to inspire and grow OVER TIME. You can't just claim something to be iconic because it's hyped up in the moment, heck, that's not even iconic. Like I said, for something to be iconic it needs to inspire and become a symbol of some sort. Super saiyan inspired most mainstream transformations making that iconic. Ask someone what they think of when they hear anime transformation, most people will say Super Saiyan. Enough said.

Can I be really candid about this? When Gear 5 came out originally? I hated it. I thought it was dumb and none of those opinions have changed really. I didn't like how Luffy just has a Legendary Devil Fruit that the World Government fears, I didn't like how said Devil Fruit takes away the everyman charm of Luffy being strong without such a Legnedary fruit. I didn't like how Oda had all these years to explain what DF Awakening is and how it works but instead he just had Gear 5 show up as a lame Deus Ex Machina that breaks A LOT of the rules that OP fans slag other series like Bleach and Naruto for doing themselves. (I personally find those particular critiques easy to dispel but that's another conversation)
It's not just that, it's the fact that Roger had no DF Powers and he conquered the Grand Line and now I just feel like Luffy will never be better than him because he has a Magical Sacred God Fruit that the WG fears.
That's not even getting started on the Gear 5 just having no tension with the lame Looney Tunes Choreography sucking the fun out of every fight as Luffy ragdolls Kaido, uses Regen in Wano, can just make bullshit from his hair and generally have no rules, limitations or weaknesses to make fights have stakes for me. But I think the worst thing about the Magic God Fruit is that OP fans are just the worst kind of manga fans. They're like asshole jocks in High School that insist that they're the best and ruthlessly slam every other Shonen Manga that does so many things better than One Piece in their own rights (Especially fights, OP has had painfully short fights forever) and the second you become critical of OP and insist that it's not perfect? They dogpile you, jump you, call you an idiot with really poor rationale such as "You hate One Piece so you must be wrong" and then parade around how OP has the most iconic transformation in Animanga when that could never ever be true.
And because of those types of people, I dropped One Piece. You gotta understand that OP was a childhood favorite of mine alongside Bleach and Naruto and now that I've spent almost half of my life reading this shit weekly, I'm just more and more disappointed at how Oda can hype up characters for over 10 years and then absolutely fail to do anything substantial with them, (Most of the Novas fit this criteria) and when fights do happen, they're painfully short and unmemorable save for ONE BIG PUNCH because the choreography ran out of creativity ages ago.
It's never a fun feeling when you fall out of love with a series as big as One Piece. But that's what happened to me. The more I reread arcs the less fun I have, to the point where I can't enjoy Alabasta anymore because it made me realize that the shoddy writing I didn't like in Wano was ALWAYS THERE! One Piece never changed, I changed. I grew up. I don't need One Piece anymore.
But it's because I grew up that I can also appreciate other mangas that a lot of people shit on for what they did accomplish in turn. I'm branching out more and more into more manga and even One Piece's cartoonish fights don't hold a Candle to Mashle which is 8 times shorter than OP but yet 1000 times more memorable and heartfelt in the fight department.
So I Hope Gear 5 doesn't break the Internet at all. Sunday will probably come and go and the normies won't notice any difference, while even my grandma can recognize a Super Saiyan.

Super saiyan will stay as the no 1 but the reason why it’s hyped up like this is because of the journey of 1000 damn episodes of it finally being debunked and confirmed. I watched the episode and it delivered mode that my mouth can ask for as it is hype. Toei handled the animation with peak perfection and the fans have no reason to not go crazy bout it as it’s like that good and the resemblance to it being Luffy is nailed. Overall I PERSONALLY think that this was prob more hype that Mui but not as hype as the legendary transformation, the great super saiyan!

I agree. If I asked someone to name the first Luffy transformation who only watched up to End of the Whole Cake Island, the first one they will almost 85% say is Gear 2nd.
Gear 4 was more hype because we had no idea it was coming. Troll accounts were barely a thing and it was hard to get spoiled on it if you were following along with the show.
Toei and Crunchyroll spoiled the transformation before it aired. Usually that is a bad sign designed to drum up revenue when it is something that is suppose to be shocking. Gear 2 was shocking, Gear 4 was shocking, I went into the episode of Gear 5 knowing what was going to happen because they PLASTERED it everywhere. Though I like it, the transformation itself (not anything that comes next with G5 in future) will not measure up to Gear 2 and Gear 4.....and I would stick to my same argument if Gear 4 ended up being a transformation using toon force.
Come to think about it Gear 2 was learned off panel so it was not out of rage. So why these one piece simps saying oh its the only non rage transformation when Gear 2nd is non-rage.

I saw some clips of Gear 5 and it looks so damn cool i'm not gonna lie, this man is just disrespecting this blue dragon and is so fun to watch his cartoony movements while he kicks the ass of that dragon. But i can't say it's more iconic than SSJ for a lot of reasons. I mean even the design, SSJ is just Goku's hair going in the sky turning yellow, it just screams power, while gear 5 has a cool look but in images alone you can't understand his power, you need to watch it to truly understand (obviously in my opinion as always) so when i see the design i think it looks cool but i won't think about a cartoony guy that can do anything. I would say that most people don’t even know what one piece is. While most people do know what dragon ball is. I remember being a kid and not even knowing what anime was but I knew what going super saiyan was and doing kamehamehas on the playground when I was 4. I had never even watched dragon ball, but dragon ball is basically as famous as Mickey Mouse

Every transformation is unique in its own way. Super sayain is unique becasue its iconic and gear 5th is unique becasue i never seen an anime and uses "toon force" as a transformation and its the modern day transformation.

In all seriousness, I think that the reason why Dragon Ball is great wasn’t because it was a pioneer in creating the genre, but how it perfect the previously established tropes of Battle series like Ring ni Kakero and Kinnikuman created. Super Saiyan could’ve been inspired by Saint Seiya in the transformation as well. I get so frustrated when people say “Dragon Ball is only seen in such high regard because it was the first Battle Shonen” when that’s not why it’s held in such regard. Both the Transformations are great, and Dragon Ball is iconic for the execution as much as One Piece is praised for the execution

In truth, there is nothing that will probably beat super Saiyan in becoming as popular or iconic. It just has the perfect amount of creating a trend to be followed, franchise popularity, and recognition worldwide.
But, at face value, I still think that Gear 5 is more UNIQUE than Super Saiyan or Ultra Instinct.

All of the previous Shonen transformations (Correct me if I’m wrong I’m more into specific anime not anime as a whole) make the character turn super serious and the fights and moves following become these dramatic and epic scenes which solidify the seriousness of it all. Gear 5 seems to be a complete 180 of that idea and sets out to make fight scenes goofy and insanely stupid on purpose. Hell, Luffy is outright laughing at Kaido and the ridiculousness of it all in the debut of Gear 5, which is a nice breath of fresh air after him being constantly pissed off like every other shonen character in a final boss fight.
That’s what I meant by unique, im not sure we have seen a shonen character reach their peak, face their current most difficult opponent, and be so… happy about it. It’s so weird seeing an anime use such a simple and positive emotion in a fight and reflect it in all he does. (Again correct me if I’m wrong if there are other jovial fighting fucks I missed in anime).

I will always say this, if Gear 5 was as iconic as people made it out to be. It would at BARE MINIMUM be as recognizable and memed as Ultra Instinct. I'm not even a big fan of DBS but you can talk to people who don't even watch Anime much and they're 10x more likely to know exactly what you're referring to if you reference Ultra Instinct. If you're to reference Gear 5, even people who enjoy anime could misunderstand/not get the reference as quickly
