    Have to say after rebuilding many, many motorcycle carbs, this is exactly what happened to me on my very own '81 Suzuki GS1000GL. Three of the four I managed to get out, but even after soaking a day and a half in parts cleaner the last one won't budge. Thanks for the video and showing how to get those darned things out!

    I just rounded this jet and searched youtube .... after I finished breaking stuff. Life saver. Appreciate the time you took to do this.

    Awesome thanks for the video.
    Had to do this last night and it went great! My stomach dropped when I looked into my carb and saw how buggered up the jet was after trying to screw it out

    Unfortunately my carbs aren't 'straight' like yours are (can't plant them leveled on a surface), so getting the drillbit in straight will be a challenge ;)

    Joe, I use a similar method also. I’m able to get about 90% of them out this way. On the ones that I can’t get I put them in the drill press and get them that way. Thanks for the video, great stuff.
    BTW, this process is NOT to be rushed. Slow and steady or you will be looking for a new carb.

    Huge lifesaver!!! Cept I melted part of the white plastic part the main jet screws into... mite still be functional if all particulates come off first? Really should replace though.
    Coated it with the original jb weld. Posta be ok with gasoline.

    Don't get if the first operation was either making the thread for the extractor or just drilling a hole. In any case, great tip, thanks

    @Joe's Chop Shop , how many times you had this work? Ive had it work a time or two. I try to keep away from those style extractors. As you said they break easy. From my experience , usually with less force than needed to remove whatever is stuck. There are newer styles of extractors that dont break as easily. But they seem to strip out instead. Thats when you get a jet stripped out and drilled out. And no way i know of to save the threads.

    • @jbartelt2000
      @jbartelt2000  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      I have done this at least 20 or more times successfully, and probably broke 4 or 5 extractors over the years. The trick is to gage the level of corrosion before you start. If I'm working on a carb that is badly corroded I won't even attempt to use a screw driver on it until it's gone a few rounds in the ultrasonic cleaner or boiled in a mix of distilled water a and 2% vinegar for 15 min. Heat is also your friend, I always heat the area where the threads are with a propane or butane torch. It expands the aluminum and loosens varnish that might be in the threads.

    Hey Joe how did you figure out what size millimeters your carburetor pilot jet was. I have a 1981 Yamaha maxim 550 and can’t seem to figure out what size jet I need to order. Any help?

    • @Jeremy-yr8yg
      @Jeremy-yr8yg 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Everywhere I looked kept mentioning #35 pilot jets so that’s what I ordered for my 81.couldn’t find any markings on the jet itself but I’m kind of getting blind these days!

    You might want to try your drilling with a left-hand drill bit; that alone just might remove the jet.

    I have a stuck jet in a Honda carb. The screw came out fine but the jet itself won't come out. I can get it to move back and forth about 1/8 of an inch but thats all. Any thoughts on what I can do to get it out without damaging it? I have scoured the internet and can only find information on the stuck screw

      @jbartelt2000  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@NielsenValleyFarms So you have the jet out but the nozzle is stuck? I would try cleaning it in an ultrasonic cleaner or boiling the carb for about 10 minutes in distilled water and vinegar. Try to knock out the nozzle while it is still hot. Shock it by taping it down on a piece of soft wood. The other option is to drill and tap a 4-40 thread in the center of it and use a screw to pull it out. If you go the screw route the nozzle will be destroyed and will need to be replaced.
