How to Tie the "Super" FG Knot with Seth Feider

  • เผยแพร่เมื่อ 6 ก.ย. 2018
  • The FG knot is Seth Feider's favorite line to line knot. It boasts both exceptional strength and a small size that allows it to slide through rod guides with ease.
On a related note, braid to fluorocarbon leaders have become his go-to flipping and pitching line set up for the reasons provided here ( • Why Pair Fluorocarbon ... ). Powerful hooksets place a lot of stress on the knot and is when slippage occurs. Seth combats this risk by adding a few additional steps to the traditional FG knot that provide an extra failsafe against slippage.

The FG knot goes through the rod guides so smoothly. Better than any other knot. Smoothness equals longer casts and less wear on the knot. Practice makes any task easier. Good video.

R.D. S. Yeah I use 2 cast worth of flouro carbon on my spinning reel and a double uni. No not goes threw my guid and low to no line twist. You can cut and retire several times without having to replace the leader. I’ve got a ton of videos catching big smallies that proves it works.

The next big innovation in line will be the elimination of knots between braid and fluorocarbon and use of a bonding agent and/or a small micro sleeve each line end can feed into and be sealed with heat or epoxy to bond the two lines together. People hate tying knots and a good engineer will put an end to the cumbersome knots. I am working on some innovations now to solve this problem.

Thanks for the step by step for the FG Seth. It will give me something to practice this winter when I am bored wishing I was on the lake. I still use the Alberto knot for my 832 to fluoro Invisx leader, and the good old Palomar to the lure. Palomar also if using straight braid to the lure. I only use one rod with straight Seaguar Invisx or Tatsu and that is my cranking rod using 10 or 12lb test, but I go by diameter not lb. test. I use that particular baitcaster that way for the sinking properties of fluoro, and it gives it a little stretch as well for when using treble hooks on a crankbait to help keep them buttoned up, along with a crankbait purpose built rod. We all have our ways for sure in doing things, but I always pay attention to you Elite guys. For me tying knots becomes like someone who can type, or play a guitar, etc. Just muscle memory and the time it takes is so much simpler when you get to that point. I would do my knots quicker and nicer if I had my 20 something eyesight back,,,tying with cheater glasses now..hahahaha! That and get the bushes and docks way more than I used to now that I am 50yrs. old. I lose sight of the lure after a certain range,,grrr! Great season with the Elites, I have enjoyed watching you since you've came into the series. Hoping you're in the Classic again next Spring...good luck!

Thanks for the option. Ive used the FG before less your end steps. Its a good knot but it is a bit time consuming and not really much less cumbersome than a well tied Alberto. The only time I use the FG is if Im using a stick with modified micro guides i.e. my Denali Lithium series rods. It does help a bit getting through the guides. Aside from that I roll with the Alberto for my BC outfits and uni to uni (typically) for SC outfits (just cause I can tie a uni to uni super fast and it works well).

There’s a video with Aaron Martens and Brett Ehrler talking braid to Fluoro knots. Brett ties a modified Alberto in like a minute. Aaron ties an FG in 4 minutes. I watched Bret and could tie the Alberto first try. I still have no idea how to tie the FG... Is it really worth the hassle to go from a 90% to a 95% strength? Not for me right now at least.

I have tried this dozens of times and I can’t get it to bite. Every single time the flouro just slips out. I have tried less tension, more tension, I just can’t seem to get it. I am using lighter line though. Usually 15lb braid to 8lb flouro. I finally gave up and went to the SC knot.

Boy, there's a pile of them KeepinItBassy! We have full team of avid anglers here at Wired2Fish but I'll share my experience. I keep at least three Rapala Super Line Scissors in the boat (wired2.fish/RapalaScissors). Are they the highest-end avail? Probably not. Do they work well on braid on other types of line? You bet. I also like the fact that they're very affordable so I can keep several on-hand in the boat and a few additional spares hanging up in my garage. If you're shopping for other options, Tackle Warehouse has a pile here (wired2.fish/TW-Scissors): Ryan

I don’t have a problem with tying the knot, the problem I have is it I have found it is only good when the leader has a larger diameter than your braid mainline. I have had this fail. Unless my leader is a large diameter I am going with the Alberto.

    • @Wired2Fish
      @Wired2Fish  5 ปีที่แล้ว

It's not necessary for rated break strengths to be the same. In general, your line to line knots will form the best when line diameters are reasonably close. In this case, the 30lb braid diameter is .011 whereas the diameter for 20lb fluorocarbon is .017. In this case, the lines work well together and produce a very strong knot. If your knot comes together well and is strong, then your line choices are suitable for the application.

Ive never understood the fascination with this knot. The blood knot takes 10 seconds to tie and my leader knot doesn't break, it's always at the lure tie, but most of the time the line itself breaks before either knot. The RP knot is another decent one but takes more time. A properly seated and synched blood knot is the best leader knot for strength and time imo. The fg is way too time consuming and leaves alot to screw up.

    • @spaloslvnv

let an alberto knot give out on you and youll find yourself spending 2 hours mastering it! lol i heard/was told the alberto was shown stronger than the blood knot. fwiw....this one not bad if you do just the simple FG knot instead of this thing.....not as quick as the alberto, but once you get the flow its a lot easier. Just some wraps and a few hitches....nothing hard about that

Really great abrasion resistance and though I've never put the Big Game line th-cam.com/users/postUgkxQ4x31pJVpClzhxzNFeILZYTW7Xbs7ZIF (any poundage) through an official test it always seems to break well above rated poundage. This line stretches a very good amount before it breaks and does well in saltwater too. Not the best line for a spinning reel in my opinion, especially if you're planning on using it for lures only due to it having a bit of memory but still a great line whether filling a spool, using as top shot or strictly for leader line. I've bought a bunch of Big game line in the past and plan on continuing to do so in the future.

And to make it completely fail safe cut the braid 3 inches up from the fluro throw the fluro in the trash then tie the bait to the braid with a palomar knot. Guaranteed 0 issues!

Actually blue flame is the hotter part... so the lower part closest to the lighter is hotter. Just sayin.

When the line fails at the knot instead of some random spot in the line, you didn’t do something right. The FG with a rizzuto finish, paired with the double pitzen knot, will never fail at the knots, meaning if you lose that fish then you either set the hook so hard you tried to launch it to the moon or you need to go up in pound test or buy a better quality fishing line or your old line is past it’s prime.

I used to use the fg knot. Completely ridiculous. It gets all caught up in your guides and has th be retired after a few fish or snags. Just do a blood knot, and stop using flourocarbon. It's expensive and really not worth it. I started using mono instead and I catch just as many, if not more fish because the line doesn't break ad soon as it gets a little fray in it. I've caught probably 30 bass and an 11lb flat head on 10lb power pro to a 15 ft long 6lb bass pro mono leader. That blood knot has held up way longer than any fg I've used and it hasn't got stuck in a cast once.

as a firefighter and a rope rescue tech. its a proven fact the more wraps and bends and loops in rope (or line) the weaker the knot. simple is stronger.
