hey seriously thanks for this tutorial, i was using a double uni which has never failed me before but i started to look for a better knot and came across some FG tutorials which looked super ridiculous and like you'd need a third arm to tie the bloody thing and i wasn't convinced. i came across your video and it seemed so much nicer to tie this way, and now its my favorite knot. i could break my double unis when i tried really hard but i cannot break this no matter how hard i pull and now i have way more confidence in my rigs i know when that big fish comes he wont be lost because of a knot i tied. cheers man appreciate it.
This is an absolute game changer! This method was quick and easy to learn (mostly because it was so thoroughly explained), and will be so much easier to tie out on the water. Seriously, thank you! Instantly subscribed based on this single video.
Fark me! What an awesome instructional video. I was persuaded to give it a go. I dont have any teeth and had to use my gums to tighten the half hitches. The knot turned out Farkin Good. Since learning how to tie the knot, I haven't lost a single yakka or garfish through rig failure. Thanks for taking the time for improving my fishing. Nige.
Some tips so ya don't launch a 15 dollar jackhammer and watch your leader go flying like I did. Took me a few weeks, but I figured things out. Make sure the wraps are tight. You can take your fingers off from holding the knot to check and readjust, just keep constant pressure and be gentle. Then after your first half hitch, wet your line and pull hard on your mainline and leader, it should tighten it up and the braid should change color. If it slips off at this point, it's a bad knot and ya need to start over. From there two more half hitches, tightened hard with wet line, then I like to snip my fluoro leader with just about an eighth of an inch remaining sticking out, then do a 6 wrap rizutto. The rizutto covers the rest of the fluoro, and makes it nice and smooth, so it goes through the guides nice and easy on the retrieve.
My problem with jackhammers has been the clinch knot on the end. Lost two with the knot failing. Never had that knot fail on anything else. So i think i need a new terminal knot.
Exactly how i do it twiggs!!, the pull/hard sinch after the half hitch which is done after the 12-15 wraps is the key -- the braid digging into the leader (hardening up) is the strength of the FG knot, everything after can be modified to angler desire and the rizutto or whatever just preserves the knot but 100+ times threw the guides it can certainly start to wear and needs be checked after each trip for sure
@@patrickb2081 Yeah, I'm pretty sure most other FG tutorials will have you alternate cinching at some point in tying it. I do mine the same way as Briggsy's tutorial, and have only had it come off because of my own incompetence. Not cinching it down here really doesn't make it seem like a good method.
Finally the right video is here. I have seen the knot done in a very similar way before in another video, and I quickly adopted it to my own fishing. All the other tutorials are far too complicated IMO, so I learned this triangle method and it has never let me down. You do not have tag ends flying all over the place and you have every bit of line tightened in your hands. To make sure the braid bites from the beginning of the knot, I pull it tight at an angle to the leader after the first 6-8 turns and repeat. Giving a total of around 12-16 turns. This will insure that the braid is tight all the way. It shows when the braid has changed its color slightly. I make the rizutto finish around the main braid including the leader. Keep the great videos coming. It is always a pleasure to watch.
Idk if it’s because I’ve watched 59 other tutorial videos on this while trying “real time” or if your video is actually one the worked for me. I honestly think it’s because I’ve now tried this knot 60 times and have finally succeeded 😂
That's AWESOME! I've been tying the FG a few years now by holding the line tight with my foot, bending my rod tip over to try and keep the line tight, and all sorts of things. This will happen tonight when I get home, looks too easy, but I really like easy with great results!!! Thank you!!
Firstly, excellent knot, this will be great on the boat. The end know you demonstrated is not a rizzuto finish but from your experience, the knot strength is well proven. This video was excellent, thank you, something good on my schedule during the lockdown
@Pelagic Pursuit - keep in mind that when people are discussing 16-22 times for this knot, they are referring to just one side. So over once, under once. For them that's two. You are doing two at a time, so one for you is two for others. When you did 15 times at the end, that is equivalent to people doing over/under 30 times. But nice rendition of the FG Knot.
So glad I found this. Best way I’ve ever seen an FG knot tied. Learnt it while sipping on a few JD’s. I found it easier using opposite hands. Thanks so much.
Tied my first couple of fg knots after watching your video and went out to test them. Well testing was a success! I caught my home lake pb largemouth at 6.15 lbs and 22 inches! Knots held up verey well. Casts were long and smooth. Super stoked about catching big girl. Will probably weigh in at over seven pounds in the springtime. Big frame with slim summer figure. Thanks again for sharing your knowledge. My new favorite braid to mono/poly knot. 11:4811:48
Brilliant. I love the FG. It's already worth taking the time to tie it, but now showing that it can be done in under a minute is a game changer. Thanks!
Yes, I've seen a handful too. You broke each step down simple & concise. Now, I have a great knot to practice & master. Maybe, I can make it under 1 minute. Great video will share with my friends. Thanks
While I understand the need to use large diameter lines like 100lb leader and 30-50lb braid so it is able to be seen on tv. But in reality, you have to realise most of us are using, as in my case, a 6lb leader and 4lb braid. Not as easy as you portray here. Try getting 6 or even 12lb leader to stay rigid like that, and you will be tearing your hair out. So, no. It isn't really that easy on smaller lines! This is not a heckle as you state, it's just I have watched countless people on here tying this and other knots, and at no stage do any of you mention or make allowances for smaller diameter lines. Add the fact, I'm 63 and wear glasses, adds a whole new dimension of difficulty. Which is my failing, not yours! That said, the instruction was clear and easy to follow.👍
Just found this video yesterday and in all my years of fishing I've struggled with FG knot. This has truly changed my life thanks Matt I can get it perfect every time. Legend
This is a fantastic method for the FG knot! Easy to tie after a few tries and better yet easy to remember how to tie. Thank you for sharing this and the reasons that you tie it the way you do (number of wraps, the finish knots, etc.)
Thanks for the great step by step explanations and the simple techniques used. I have watched a few videos and didn't even try to do this knot as they lost me. Great camera work also. Made it very easy to see what to do. Very much appreciated!
Every other FG video I've watched has seemed too daunting, but yours gave me the confidence to learn it! been at it for about an hour now and I think I've got it down. Thanks heeps
I just spent so much time (too much) trying to learn the triangle plait part; learned it on my own then pressed play on the video just to see a POV angle showing it easily :). Thank you either way this method is awesome and can do it in any condition which makes a knot useful to me or not.
ABSOLUTELY BRILLIANT!!! I've been put off tying this knot, but in the last few days watched a few TH-cam presentations about how to tie this knot. I tied my first ones last night, ready for my trip to Lord Howe Island coming up. Your method for tying this knot, and the simple explanation is by far, the best one I have seen, and I'll be adopting your method for tying this beautiful knot. So clean looking, so strong and probably the easiest knot to tie. Thanks for this video. Liked and subscribed!
100% subscribed. I thoroughly thought that this was probably the best knot tying video I've seen. Others just say what to do and show it. However, you say what to do and explain it, which allows me to catch up and understand what to do and why. Definitely has helped me tremendously thank you.

Hey Mate! Looks like I am a year late to the table! Awesome youtube find! I love the FG knot, for all the reasons you described. I have 3 different ways to tie them, all are still a bit clumsy (more my fault than the process). I really like your triangle wrap/weave method. I look forward to trying it with the 10LB braid and 20lb mono leader. Tieing those light lines can be a challenge sometimes , especially in the wind, in the kayak. Tight lines on that Fish Of A Lifetime!
That’s the best video of the FG knot I’ve seen yet. Thanks mate you explained it perfectly. I’ve been tying it a few different ways for years but that’s the best way I’ve seen yet. 🤙
I have seen that way before by a guy at the tackle shop, this step by step will help a lot. The Rosuto knot at the end we do completely differently but that is fine, all it is there for is to tidy up knot and stop it fraying going through the guides.
Great info and process! The BEST INFO on the entire video is "IF your knot isn't BOMB PROOF AND PERFECT- SNIP IT AND TIE IT AGAIN UNTIL IT IS PERFECT!" That should be EVERY time!! As mentioned, when fishing for large fish, that fish of a lifetime can be just one cast away at any time. Given ALL the time, effort and money to put yourself in that position, WHY get lazy on one of the most important components? I fish for Salmon, Steelhead, Sturgeon in the NW USA mostly and you may fish all day or even days without a bite sometimes. So when the grab comes, having a weak link is NOT an option!! It IS the difference between success and failure. Best Fishing Advice Ever! Thx Matt!
Great video! Been going through lots of FG knot videos. This is an easy method...with no teeth involvement and no need to have main line anchored or held in place by anything to tie knot. Took a little practice but like you said, it can be tied anywhere once you get the hang of it. THANKS.
Thank you, I can now tie this knot with confidence. Your statement of “Fish of a lifetime” stuck with me. Excellent tutorial…I don’t want to be that guy. 😊
What a game changer!!! I love the FG and it’s the only knot I use!!! Pretty sure I also used to play touch with you at Redlands with big red, Corey and a few of the boys!!!

From the amazing fishing to the beautiful views to the drone filming the GTs chasing down your lures to the family shots with your wife and children! You're videos are just amazing and I personally want to thank you for letting your subscribers come along on your adventures. Keep up the great work and God bless you and your family!!! Thanks Matty, I’ve tried many videos on the FG knot and this is the best run down I have seen. Going to the shed now to improve my FG knot. Thank you for sharing 🤙🤙
Gamechanger!! The holding of the loop in one hand I’ve never seen before and makes sense adding pressure to the plait!! I’m never gonna be lazy again!!
I have been dreading changing over to an FG because it seemed harder then a slim beauty but this video changed my mind. I am easing myself into jigging and with much heavier leader I have no choice but to move to the FG. My dread is now replaced by excitement. Thanks for posting this. Thanks a bunch!
Thanks Matt, really appreciate the tutorial. Really well explained making it easy to understand your method. This will take remove much of the challenge of replacing a leader in the midst of a hot bite or windy conditions. Awesome stuff! Rgds Greg.
I've watched a ton of your videos, and really enjoy them. But, this one is perhaps the one that will have the greatest impact on my success on the water. Thanks and Cheers!
Love it I've only started to get into using braid and learning knots. That would have to be the best i've seen. Will be looking up more of your tuitions Cheers and Thanks
thanks a bunch Matt. im literally seeing this 2 years too late. Ive lost so many fish to bad FG Knots, i had stopped using it. You reset my confidence. Will try and let you know. Thanks for this man!! Yeew!
Great video you make it easy to understand I have been using this knot for 10 years ,it is by far the best knot for casting with a spinning reel long distance the only difference I do is, I put my Rizuto on top of both Mono leader and braid so that it tightens evenly and does not leave that little lip i have cracked off a few when that lip caught on the first guide Thanks for sharing tight lines
Female fisho here, alot of the tips and tricks for knot tying i see for fishing seems so similar to what we tween girls did back in the 90s when making our friendship bracelets! The triangle "criss cross" method was what we used too 😳 it's a lost art form, we never had videos back then, it was all handed down to us from the older girls at school. Lol fishos could learn a thing or two from watching friendship bracelet videos nowadays 😂
Cheers Matt. I needed another way to tie FG’s when the odd occasion comes in the boat cruising with the wife and kids. Really appreciate this video. 👍🏼
Always avoided the FG because all the tutorials are some combination of wrapping one line around a knee the other line under your foot, hold this bit in your mouth etc... Not gonna happen bobbing around in the kayak! This method definitely looks doable out on the water. Thanks for sharing!
I've been using the FG knot for several years now and love it. I've always used the method holding the braid in my mouth. Came across your channel and your way is the best I've seen. Took me about 20 times then it clicked in my head 😊. This is the only way I tie it now. Thanks. You've got a new subscriber.
You don't know how I appreciate this video. I've struggled with this knot for years, giving up after a while- even after Iearned it cause it was just too much of a schleb. Know I've finally learned it the easy way- the quickest and the best! I've subbed.
A year on and I've never looked back! I fish on the Namibian coast, and the inland dams- and I've not used any other knot since this post! Thanks again, mate!
Thanks, this is the easiest way I have seen to tie the FG knot! And since I started with the FG knot I have not had issues with the knot to my leader failing like I did with other knots. Thanks!
Man I've gotta say, you are a god-sent for me. You make everything so much easier to understand. Like being a yr 8 student is hard, getting home and going fishing is my escape, without your videos I don't think I would get that escape, Well at least after I get busted off for the first time and have to trying and learn my FG. Cheers man you really are somethin! 👍👍
Found it easiest to do when i started thinking, leader tag over top left, over top right... figure 8. Love this knot and this way to tie it. Funny how so many other vids on tying other knots reference the FG, gotta be good if everyone compares it.
This is the third way I’ve seen this knot tied. All three are excellent ways to tie the FG on land. But I can see why this method would best on a boat with waves rocking you up and down. It’s very quick and controls the tension well. I like it!
Awesome idea, makes more sense to me them the other tutorials I've watched, I'm sure anew adjustments for smaller line will be needed bit the principle is awesome
This can't be any more detailed in teaching a FG. I learnt to tie it from briggsy but can't tie it on the go. So this will help with that just right. Thanks mate.
Best tutorial for this knot on TH-cam man. I was trying other methods to do the same knot and just couldn't understand it from a 3rd person point of view. GOing to try this tonight... hopefully it'll be as easy with lighter line for bass fishing. Thanks!
Love the FG since ive learned it… your way of tying it is the best and probably the fastest ive seen positively the easiest and most natural. Thx better than what i did before
"... some Jimmy...." Love that! Anyway, thank you for the very well done video. I've always used the Alberto because it's easy, and also because I was afraid of the FG. But this will help immensely. Thanks, Mate!
Thank you for reinforcing the fact that everything you do after the "finger trap" part of the knot is non-load bearing. It makes no difference how you finish the knot, as long as the finger trap part is tightened up properly. Finding that out on a TH-cam video more than 10 years ago was a game changer. Now i can shove it up the arse of all the pundits that i speak to who tell me otherwise
Caught a Lake Trout in the narrows leading into Bass Lake (Espanola, OR-Province), 34”long, 15lbs 8oz, all w/a 6’4” Medium Rod, 2500 Shimano Stradivarius all on 6lb “Bass Pro Brand”, Monofilament, NO LEADER at ALL! Took me 45mins to land her but the old “PALOMAR”, knot!! Used the PALOMAR for years & always will whenever it’s applicable! Thanks for the video!
I’ve been tying FG for 5 years. This is the BEST method I’ve seen used. THANK YOU for sharing.
I've watched alot of fg knot tutorials on TH-cam, and honestly this one makes the most sense.👌🔥🐟❤

Will be looking up more of your tuitions
Cheers and Thanks
An excellent demonstration and explanation. I love the Fish-For-Life way of thinking.
thanks a bunch Matt. im literally seeing this 2 years too late. Ive lost so many fish to bad FG Knots, i had stopped using it. You reset my confidence. Will try and let you know. Thanks for this man!! Yeew!
By far the best all round fisherman in Australia. Everything done with class and quality. Good on ya brother keep it up. 🤙🏽🤙🏽
Easiest explanation of this knot. Went and got my line had a practice watching video. Got it, thanks! Have a great 2022.
I'm a little late to the party, but this is the easiest way and best demo on how to tie the FG. Great Job!! Thank you!
This is an excellent and extremely easy video to watch. Body cam part makes it even easier to follow
Takes a few goes to get confident, but once you use it you can't go back. Awesome video!
By far the best and easiest way I've learned to tie it. Nicely done man
Cheers Matt. I needed another way to tie FG’s when the odd occasion comes in the boat cruising with the wife and kids.
Really appreciate this video. 👍🏼
Mate, this is the best video on an FG Knot anywhere. Great work.
Always avoided the FG because all the tutorials are some combination of wrapping one line around a knee the other line under your foot, hold this bit in your mouth etc... Not gonna happen bobbing around in the kayak!
This method definitely looks doable out on the water. Thanks for sharing!
This is a great (best) way to tie the FG anywhere - however I use the Rizutto finish that Briggsy demonstrates. Thanks!
The BEST fg tutorial on TH-cam. Hands down 🙏 thanks Matty
Best presentation of an FG I've seen!
Thanks for simplifying this. I actually see and understand what's happening. Genius
Best FG vid. I’ve never had a knot break using this method. Cheers. Definitely tied in a minute.
Great job Matt awesome nice to see how you guys do your knots and other things
Thanks!
how did you go with it bro
@@PelagicPursuit89 still working on it haha. I was out most of the weekend but will be practicing up on it this week. Thanks bro!
Excellent video, clearly explained and demonstrated. Hats off to you. Legendary. 👍
Thank you for sharing! Absolutely the best method I’ve seen for tying the fg
Honestly so happy I can finally do this knot. You have helped me for life mate appreciate it.
Love the FG since ive learned it… your way of tying it is the best and probably the fastest ive seen positively the easiest and most natural.
Thx better than what i did before
“Don’t be that guy” 😂
That’s faster than I can tie a Crazy Alberto. Brilliant!
That is IT. Sooooo much easier than every other I've tried. Thanks!!
"... some Jimmy...." Love that! Anyway, thank you for the very well done video. I've always used the Alberto because it's easy, and also because I was afraid of the FG. But this will help immensely. Thanks, Mate!
Absolute gold content. Started tying FGs between my fingers now and wont go back.
Most ingenious method of tying an FG I’ve seen to date!!! Good on you
Thank you for reinforcing the fact that everything you do after the "finger trap" part of the knot is non-load bearing.
I would have to say that is the best explained video out there worth the watch 👍👍👍
Thankyou, I always thought that alternating the half hitches was a waste of time and just complicates the knot further, great vid.
Excellent! This has to be the simplest explanation of how to tie the FG knot. Thank mate.
Cheers mate! Easy to follow instructions and hints n tips. . . I can tie an FG knot now, after a few practices 😉🎣👍 Thanks. . Tight lines
First I've seen a FG done like this, was spinning me out at first 😂 will have to give it a crack good work 👌
you buddy, are a fishing genius. I had to watch it in slow mo to get it right, but it totally works! greetings from Vienna, Austria
Awesome bud. This is how i tie my FG too. Been using this method for almost 12 years now. Never failed me once.
"This knot won't be good if you don't have teeth". Hahaha cracked up
