I used this knot on all my bass rods before lake time. All those annoying guide clicks from the trad FG knot are gone. 3 weeks of daily fishing and hundreds of casts per rod...the knots are still as nice as the day I tied them. Thank you Sir. The Thinking-Man's FG.

I've been putting a drop of superglue on the knot for years. It accomplishes three things. Extra protection which makes it impossible for the line to pull through. It also smooths out the transition between the two lines and completely eliminates the clicks when it goes through the eyes. It also eliminates any fraying of the braid. Since doing this my casts are perfect because there are no steps to slow the line going the eyes.

    • @evad1311

Anyone complaining about the length of time tying this variation of the knot should understand the concept of a tutorial video is not for Jack to blow through this knot in 3 minutes like I’m sure he could.....that would defeat the purpose of a tutorial.....and considering the fact that Jack is one of the Northeast pioneers of targeting bluefin tuna on spinning gear, he understands the big picture here. You’ve spent thousands, if not tens of thousands on your boat, your fuel, your rods, reels, lures, lines, gaffs, harpoons, and hours rigging everything just to have the opportunity to be able to ATTEMPT catching a 200+ pound class BFT on spinning gear. Not to mention this is coming from a charter captain whose reputation and income is based on happy clients, so is it really so mind boggling that you’d spend the extra couple minutes ensuring a confident connection from main line to leader when you could be looking at fight times that are several hours long under drag pressure that 99% of fisherman can’t even comprehend on spinning gear? It can be the little things like this that separate the guys telling fish stories from the guys putting meat on the deck. Thank you Jack and OTW for the feature.

Thank you Sir! I have done all the finishes imaginable to the initial weave, but it always left me with that "angle" between the braid and leader, at the knot. I like fishing long leaders - which means that the knot passes through the last two eyes - and always that little "thump", cutting my casting distance.
NOT ANYMORE!!! The knot she runs like oil through the eyes!! Adds a lot of distance.
Also - my friends are lining up for me to do their leaders. They think I'm a rockstar!

Do you cast with the knot wrap in the spool, do you cast with the knot out of the line roller or do you cast with the knot having in between the two first guides? Also are you comfortable casting hard?

Honestly, waste of time. I love the FG knot and use it for years already, but with a simple 6 wrap rizutto finish at the end. It takes me about a minute, maybe a minute 15 for the whole thing to be done and ready to fish. Also, why is he saying that the alternating wraps create this line, that increases the profile of the knot ? It's not a good thing! The point of an FG knot is for it to be as slim as possible. Even the leader material doesn't fold on itself once if tied correctly. Again, no idea why hesl was making it a larger profile than necessary. And 10 minutes for a knot? Hahahaha you better have multiple pre tied spools for each reel if you're trying to fish instead of thing on the water. Tight lines

This is just reinventing the wheel. The only modification to the original Japanese style FG knot is the Rizzuto finish. The Original Japanese Fg knot ALWAYS had a long finish after the leader was cut. Check out the early Japanese videos. There are 2 reasons why the knot was shortened. 1. time an laziness 2. Everything after the chinese finger trap is non load bearing - i.e you can do any finish you like and it wont make a difference to the strength of the knot

I have tied FG knots for over a decade proficiently and the extra hitches are not necessary if you original hash cross pattern is done correctly. those half hitches have Zero to do with the Main line biting into the Leader line. it only serves to smooth the run through the guides, and an extra PSA: there is absolutely nothing (knot wise ) on earth with a 100% knot strength, no not never fails. but BS sells. he got his 300k view$

Compression, the harder the line is pulled the tighter the knot cinches down on the leader. But because the leader is not kinked or knotted it retains all of its strength. It has a smaller profile than a double uni and casts smother through smaller guides. But still a pain to tie.

Uni knot is all I use for anything in fishing. It’s simple takes 20 seconds to add leader, takes 10 seconds to use for terminal tackle. Simple

Did the fg knot fail you ? So the line being at 90 degree as you shown made the knot fail? The knot is hard to make for some and you are adding more steps..

You usually tie these knots only a few times a season, before you leave home, though most can bang out an FG on site in very quick time when they're not explaining it step by step for TH-cam. Then when you're standing there cursing the loss of a fish of a lifetime, he'd be enjoying the fight. Maybe try it before you dog on someone who's put together a very good vid.

Dude, I don't know what sort of fish you are chasing to only tie up a few FG knots a season, but there are times when I'm tying them up multiple times a day. I've never had an FG knot fail. We just landed a 150lb tarpon the other day on a simplified FG knot, which only took me about a minute to tie on the spot.

If the guy was wanting to get the best knot possible in a fraction of the time, he should of just ran his fluorocarbon leader up inside the Pro Pro Hollow Ace (a hollow braid) with a splice needle and just did a simple nail knot with a few drops of superglue at the end of the leader up in the Hollow Ace. Look it up, there is no better knot, which is not really a knot at all. It's a splice.

This is a difficult knot to learn. The cameraman was no help by unzooming the camera angle I could not see what was done. Thanks for trying to give us a video. I think it would be helpful to just leave the camera zoomed in on your hands,

Man spends 10 minutes tying the knot perfectly.
During the last step dude cuts main line instead if tag end.
Now the braid is tied directly to the hook with a shoe laces knot.

It dosent take 10 minutes because once you get use to it it would take like 2 minutes for a normal fg knot but when you do this fg knot in the video its probably like 5 minutes

Now that you can buy 30-40lb hollow core, I don't really play this game. Heck you can even buy 20lb. You can splice a 12lb leader into 20lb hollow and have a true 100% connection (if you've got good eyes). I've also never lost a fish to a simple bimini twist to modified albright.

    1. Waste time
    2. Waste braid
    3. Waste leader
    4. Waste energy
I just can see that this modified FG is the first knot that you can tie at home, not in the boat. Anyways, great tips on the shaving part when tie the half hitch.
    Thanks buddy

I didn't know how to do this before the video and still don't know how after watching it. Maybe this was for someone in the know but not for someone trying to learn. The show me how suks as much as the camera work and is now more irritating than the time to write this

Why you still using your mouth? Use the pink method and you forgot to tell people that when you pull on the FG to tighten the line it doesn't bite down all the way to the bottom because when you pull the first thing to tighten is the end of the knot so you can't tighten the beginning because the end is already too tight. The best way to make sure the whole knot is tighten is by doing about 5 to six wraps and pulling the line than wrap 5 to 6 times than pull to tighten again. You repeat the process until you are satisfied with the size of your knot, than you proceed to finish your knot.

The reason we moisten knots is to stop friction & heat; using heat is very counter productive.
