Some one already did and the ssd runs cooler without the cover. In fact my og fat ps5 with a 2tb firecuda 530 with EK heatsink was throttling while trying to load horizon burning shores. Reinstalled the game to ps5 ssd and ran fine. Reinstalled to m.2 ssd and game ran badly. Reformatted m.2 ssd did not fix the issue and reformat speeds were super bad. Took the cover off and speeds went back to normal and game ran fine. Maybe some ssds are different but the firecuda 530 is a beast of a gaming ssd and it definitely needs the cover off. If you don't have animals or a dirty place I'd leave the cover off.
I'm not sure why they made the cover split in half when we could have gotten really cool color customed blades on the PS5. Instead, it looks like an upgraded futuristic version of the PS4, with the black line split in between the covers.
Actually depending on the ssd and if it's the og fat ps5 leaving the ssd bay cover off is essential. Tests were done and thermals are way better with the cover off. Negative pressure cooling on ps5 is a dud. In fact my seagate firecuda 530 2 tb with EK heat sink was overheating and throttling while loading games like horizon burning shores. It was completely glitching out and took way longer to load and game was skipping after it loaded. Took the cover off and it's ran fine ever since. I was a big trust sonys engineers person before all this too. The youtubers were right. Just dust your ps5 often at the Intake and around it and vacuum floor area around it and dust in the expansion bay will be non existent. Keeping that ssd as cool as possible is more important.
