Those mashed potatoes look delicious with that gravy! I'm gonna have to make that next time I go camping! No hate on cooking the beans in it's can. Great video guys!
A (not so secret) secret… love the vids and I’m always learning, so here’s one back at ya! Remember Avon? Grab a bottle of their Skin So Soft moisturiser if you get half a chance and say goodbye to those midges, mozzies, ticks and bugs (we have our fair share up in the Highlands and in the forestry)! It’s just a simple moisturiser (unlike Deet or Jungle Formula etc.), it’s good for the skin and works a treat. Cheap, non-toxic, 100% safe alternative to bug-spray that just works (plus your skin will thank you)!
I just ate but got hungry again watching you with that meal. I want to know what is wrong with heating beans in a can. Plain food but nothing better. What I like the most is that you didn't have to spend time chopping and mixing. Just plain ole goodness. Just so you know, it has become a custom at my house, after watching your videos, to lightly toss your plate so that the fork makes a noise after you have a meal. Certain phrases have also become common here. Phrases such as "Just the ole job" and "That went down well" can be heard quite often around here. Needless to say, you have made quite an impression on my household. Thanks for all you do!!!
I'm off to the woods on Friday, can't wait. How many people find the more times you go away the better you get at it. Taking the right things, not wasting things you take etc. I'm not in Simon or Craig's league yet though. Happy days to all
Cooked in the can is how we used to heat our baked beans and bangers n beans on our campfires and bonfires as kids during the 70"s. Reassuring to see the technique is still alive and kicking 👌 Well done fellas!
The issue with cooking in a can is that you do not want the thin plastic liner of the tin cooking/burning to produce nasty carcinogenic chemicals that then taint your food. If you do want to cook in the tin, it is important to ensure you don't use too high a temperature. A safe method is to put the tin inside another container with water, or as we saw Simon do in this video, place them a little away from the high temp heat source, on his cooking rack. Don't cook a tin directly in a fire or very hot coals.
If you did a little real on the ground research you would find that MOST if not all, tinned Baked Beans in Tomato Sauce DO NOT have any plastic liner and if they do, it is usually only a thin strip over the weld/join in the can. Other safe cans without any plastic liners include tinned Pineapples and other acidic foods. Dog and cat foods also don't usually have any form of plastic liner and therefore make decent cooking pots, safe to use at any temperatures.
Guess what, during manufacturer, the bean can is pressure cooked and gets hotter that it ever will over a fire, so long as it's full with open lid. The liner on a can filled with liquid should not get any hotter that a can sitting in a water bath. Water conducts heat incredibly well, especially boiling water.
@@swiftandsure9216 WATER! SPROG. Heated mine attached with wire to the manifold of my Landrover or with the Hexamine stove, but to be honest, NONE of our tins had this white plastic lining this lot are worried about. A tin of gnarly sausages tied to a flash bang and hoyed into the local pond was proper Bushcraft Fishing, just scooped the stunned fish floating on the top. I remember being on Salisbury Plains and giving my two 58 Pattern water bottles to the Recce Corporal who got the whole sections water bottles filled in the River Avon. A couple of puritabs and it was the best tasting water I'd had for a while. Let's face it, we only had Puritabs and Milbank Banks, nothing else.
Two thoroughly decent blokes enjoying a great wild camp, what could be better? Youre both experts in this field, oops Dad pun there. This is good for my mental health just watching both of you, either of you, individually or not. Thanks for sharing 👍
Another great video, thank you. I still warm up tinned food (already cooked) near the fire. Back in the day we'd make a bain marie with our mess tins. I like fried sausages but I LOVE boiled sausages. I boil them and the onions in a pot then add the gravy granules at the end. It's about 630am watching this and I'm now ravenous!!!Thanks again.
Glad to see ya back out in the woods Beans cooked in a can, I can't believe that's a big deal. I just turned 70 and when camping, I thought cooking in the can I'd what was supposed to happen. And you know there are some that makes a big deal out of using a wooden spoon, survived that too. LOL Great video, nice camp, nice weather, a friend to enjoy it with. Don't get much better. God bless and stay safe on your travels.
