Puffy certainly looks like he is enjoying himself! It's marvelous watching him bounce around like a deer. He is adorable! Thanks for sharing him with us, Jay! Give him a big hug from one of his biggest fans!
I love the way you handle your challenges, with openness, humility and tenacity. It helps to have a partner who supports your dreams and a dog to tell you that you are always right. Be well, stay safe, and thanks for sharing your journey.
Hey Jay, Long time builder and im watching and you're doing the right thing, when building an addition you want the structure plum/level and attach it to the non level/plum structure, sheet as normal and when you do the finishing touches it will all work out. Trust me it will look great.
I love your videos Jay ❤ they are wonderful. One thing I really love is that guitar music you play all the time. I have recorded it so I can listen to it any time you're between videos. Thank You !!
I love your passion for your cabin. It’s awesome. I love the videos. It genuinely looks like you are having an amazing time building this. It’s awesome. I look forward to the future videos.
Good morning from S. Ontario where I am enjoying watching you and little Puffy in your 'activities.' You are doing great, Jay. Nothing has to be perfect in life, but I can appreciate your challenges with this cabin.
Hi Jay! Great content and I love your channel. A very wise idea to run a light synthetic oil for your generator. Just to let you know that you can buy other brand names for a lot less money, especially when they go on sale ($40 - $45). Another hint to save on gas consumption is to turn on the eco switch on your generator. It will run at idle and when there is a demand for power, it will automatically rev up to meet that demand. Congratulations on your channel and keep the videos coming!
37 years carpenter here. The house side miners wedge on top plate between existing house to plum your side walls. In other words a word I coined working in century old buildings. "Fur it out". Then you can fill the gap with a foam roll batting then caulk it. If you do it right you will hardly see it. As your video progresses it looks like you arrived at same conclusion well done pardner well done ❤
Jay you should bring your power tool batteries inside cabin to keep out of cold elements to extend battery life. Love the shows, from your friends here in Minnesota!
Hi Jay love your channel, if you have power out lets in your cabin, you should be able to just plug the power bank into a spare out let and it should power the cabin, double check with an electrician, it can be done in Scotland, unless you wiring is done differently.
I know nothing about construction and have to say I am so impressed by how far you have come along on this cabin. The things you have learned just by trial and error. Best way to learn my friend.
It's minus 23 celcius here in London Ontario this morning and I'm hiding inside where it's nice and warm and here's Jay talking about how warm it is there at minus 33 lol. Reminds me when I used to live in Northern Ontario, coming in all sweaty and hot from chopping wood in minus 40 degree weather lol. Good times.
The longest lasting lessons, are the ones learned the hard way ! You can fill that gap, with something solid, not spray foam, take your time and cut a 1 peice perfect fitting shim, or wedge. Secure new wall and shime to excisting cabin wall, and go from there. Stay out of the hot sun !
Great video Jay. I think your work is actually quite good. Don't forget that there will be heaving from the ice, which of course, is a fact of life in your neck of the woods. You are doing the absolute best with what you got.
A little late to the party about the ply, but installing it horizontally will strengthen your structure. Amazing work and ethics, can't wait to see the next chapter!
Thank you Jay for inviting us into your world. You have an amazing positive attitude that's infectious. I think we need Puffy merchandise. A nice thick hoodie with Puffy on the front, and his paw prints on the sleeve. Once again, thank you.
I got a good tip from a small engine shop last summer. At least, I think it is valid. I assume they know what they are talking about. Suppose you want to buy high-octane gas for your small engine equipment. You go to the gas station and select the high-octane gas. Pump about 7 gallons of gas into your vehicle before filling the small gas container. He said the gas lines may be full of regular gas from the previous customer, and to ensure that you are using high-octane gas for your small engine equipment, pumping 7 gallons into your vehicle will do the trick.
Good morning Jay! Whooo weeeee its cold up there! 😳🥶🥶🥶 in Texas we are finally going up in temps almost 60 this week! Yay lol Have a good day! I like the green wool sweater! Thats nice!
Sometimes when i was taking an empty trailer in a yard in Yellowknife, that s been sitting there for days, and it was -40 i had to call a guy who would come with a torch and unfreeze the dollys ! nothing was moving ! lol ! i know how cold it can be there ! Stay inside ! stay warm !
Jay look forward to every Sunday and Wednesday to see your videos. I also luv the cold weather. Spend alot of time at my cabin in the winter time also. Keep up the good work.
Jay This is about the pup get a box of snack bags they are smaller than sandwich bags and you can put them on his feet before his booties and his paws won't get wet
Im sure you know that in case of an emergency you could also turn on your gas oven and open the door to heat. My Mom would never have anything but a gas stove and oven because of power outages. My Granny used to tell us stories of how they placed her and her twin brothers cradle in front of the oven as newborns in Utah to stay warm. Safely
For the gap in your wonky wall, where it connects to your new addition. Just fill it with some expansion foam at a later date…. It’s structurally fine the way it is. Also, the blocking you put between the windows really isn’t required.. if you’re concerned about window, breakage windows are normally rough framed, at least a quarter to a half inch larger than the window on all sides then expansion foam insulators the gap. The gap also allows for any possible residual movement in the structure..
Glad I could help connect you and Andy. I have his Canvas anorak and its an heirloom forsure. Glad you enjoy the wool anorak. You and your channel are the exact testing grounds for his products, I hope that Anorak lasts you a lifetime and more ! Thanks for the shout out Jay!
i am suprised that you are using 2x4 walls. I would think to reduce the amount of wood you burn, going to a 2x6 or even 2x8 walls would help but i know that increases the cost. I love to see the dog. Keep up the great content.
i admire your courage jay ... working outside in such a cold temp man ! im in quebec we just got -31 C yesterday and let me tell ya i would not work outside verry long in -40 that's for sure 😂
I have a few of these and they make starting screws so much easier DEWALT DT7701 QZ Magnetic Bit Holder. The sleeve can be pulled forward over the screw head and stop the screw going sidewards.
Never done it myself, but I’ve seen on the Outdoor Boys channel, cleaning dishes with snow… don’t know if that’s just good enough to pack away and clean properly at home, or whether it does a proper job of washing up… but thought it might make something easier for you 😎
I was looking around that region (well I flew over it in flight simulator) from Yellowknife to Lake Prosperous, dang it looks so beautiful even in a simulated world. Bad thing my plane gathered too much ice -29C and I crashed somewhere trying to get back from Prosperous. Anyhow! I am up for this video, 4 minutes in and I already know I will enjoy. About the generator, why don't you try and put it inside a hole somehow, to have it at least a few degrees above air temperature? Maybe the ground in there is rock hard...don't know.
I think another visit by your sister is called for, just sayin'... That said, your work is stellar and, perhaps, should become the anchor for the entire cabin, but that would mean a rebuild of the original structure and the $$$ that would come with it. Sorry, my friend, just keep doing the best you can with what you have, and we'll be with you!
I have the same generator, I do a complete maintenance every spring go to you tube it shows you how to do it ,I never have a problem and it always starts and have never had any problems with it
LOL more like 1.5 of what he did ... 15f and 1in of snow thats -9c and 2.54 cm ... what we call a dusting .. and it is practically shorts weather ... until it is in the -20c's and 200cm ... we dont worry about the snow much ... thats almost 10 inches deep in one snow fall btw ... what americans get is truly laughable when they say their light snow is a blizzard ...
So good, to see also the leasing! and remedier in the future not to trust a construction, that you didnot make yourself, thats the best learning, trust a 70 year guy😂from DK, I've byen there, but Nice to watch your expierences out there in the cold rgs Kim
I love the way you talk to Puffy just like a child. These videos are getting better on each release. You are peeling the curtain back in each episode.....Great job
Hey Jay. Your roof trusses on your addition. Why don’t you run your truss from the front of your addition to the existing eve . Fixing a number of problems. You could then eliminate them windows in the front on the second level.
Jay I’m in Arkansas and love your channel. I’m always impressed what it takes to make it there. I went outside earlier to take the trash and it was 15f. I thought I was gonna die. Respect to you. ❤
to fix the discrepancy ... shim the cabin to fit to the new addition built plumb and straight ... you will need to slap some expanding foam in the gap after you have the side walls covered ... the window header gap if you MUST use plywood sandwich it between solid wood parts ... so the header needs to be on BOTH sides ... to counter the sheer force the plywood will experience ... Sheer as in sliding a deck of cards sideways ... build the new level and square ... adjust at the joints to the old moved structure ...
if you had a non penetrating way to fasten a straight edge to the corners you could circular saw the plywood facing to level and butt join then ... but short of poking holes in your wall with screws ... shimming the gap is the better option
in future ... when adding on to an existing building ... always bring a sheet of 4 x 8 1/8 paneling with your wood ... this becomes shims for making wall edges level and plum ... you cut a 2x4 wide section off an edge and as tall as needed leaving the less than 1/8in part empty .. in case you are wondering that's 12 sections 2x4 wide and 8 feet long .. perfect for a lot of fixing
Umm Jay ... the siding goes at least halfway down the face board at the bottom ... FYI ... this locks the wall to the floor frame and makes it less likely to bend and twist ...
oh btw get puffy 3 more sets of booties for camping ... one to wear one drying one cooling down from drying and one ready to wear ... change em when you go in for meals or a decent stay of any length ...and get the doggo a batman cape and hat ... be funny seeing the cap fluttering as he runs his behind off ;) .... ohhh add a bell to his collar too ... tells you where he is and keeps animals warned he is around so they stay away more reliably
Run a scrap piece under where your plywood is going, and you can rest the plywood on it and not have to fight it so much when you’re putting on your walls
Lol, I thought first your girlfriend was there on the camera until you told me about yourself with a tracking camera. That's pretty cool. I didn't know about that.
That dog is just too funny. Thanks for another great video. Stay warm in your wool clothing.
For future builds some short scrap 2x4’s screwed into the rim joist can be used as temporary ledger boards to support the plywood panels.
What a nice video. Your dog was listening so well and didn’t bark once. Wonderful. Your addition is coming along nicely. Thank you and take care
Puffy called me..he wants a nice, warm anorak too!😊
I'm glad you have someone who makes you happy.
Puffy certainly looks like he is enjoying himself! It's marvelous watching him bounce around like a deer. He is adorable! Thanks for sharing him with us, Jay! Give him a big hug from one of his biggest fans!
Awesome progress Jay. Puffy is the best companion, warms my heart to see the footage of such a happy dog 🐕 👍
Stay safe out there big guy !
Great work Jay. Love your Puffy. Thank you.
You are amazing, keep it going.
Jay, you got the formula, your videos are awesome!
There's a perfect spot next to the fire for Puffy and her bed!
Jay, I think he needs a puppy coat. He is so precious. Even though they have lots of hair a coat would help him. Just a suggestion. Great videos.
I love your videos Jay ❤ they are wonderful. One thing I really love is that guitar music you play all the time. I have recorded it so I can listen to it any time you're between videos. Thank You !!
It is coming along, have fun. Very cold, we had “0” F this morning and it is cold.
I spend way too much time watching this channel and out door boys lol.
jay ive burnt wood for 30 years now. when you load your stove up always put the bark side down and it will burn about an hour longer .for you
Good to see you making progress! Stay warm, and have a good week!
Hi Jay! Great content and I love your channel. A very wise idea to run a light synthetic oil for your generator. Thank you Jay for all the work you do on keeping us all entertained keeps me wanting even more time on your channel thank you
Looking great. Awesome progress. There are no mistakes if you learn from it. It's part of the education process
Opening scene, awesome 👍

Everything looks fantastic and everything looks like it's coming along.Just fine keep up the good work😊❤
You are doing a great job. Love your videos. Watching from Cody, WY.
Just bought one of those jackets for my husband.
Great footage, I really enjoyed seeing the doggie
Jay you should bring your power tool batteries inside cabin to keep out of cold elements to extend battery life. Love the shows, from your friends here in Minnesota!
You will get there, love how you talk out loud about it,Enjoy your videos🥰🇨🇦🥰
Jay youare amazing ❤
Great video, Jay! As always. Love Puffy!!!😊❤

Puffy is so adorbs!! He's living his best life🐩. He is a great addition to the vlogs💪🏼

Love Puffy being along for the adventure 😂😊
Good morning Jay!
Good mornin!! 🖐😎👍🔥
These things happen. Not a big deal. You found a good solution.
Looking good. It’s a pain in the ass to build on your own. It’s even harder for guys like us. Non builders😊
Great video Jay. I think your work is actually quite good. Don't forget that there will be heaving from the ice, which of course, is a fact of life in your neck of the woods. You are doing the absolute best with what you got.
Maybe a doggy bed for Puffy?! So he doesn’t have to lay right on the cold floor? Thank you for the great video!
A little late to the party about the ply, but installing it horizontally will strengthen your structure. Amazing work and ethics, can't wait to see the next chapter!
Jay, try attaching a 2×4 to your bottom joist that should hold your plywood in place so you can attach it to your wall. 😊
Thank you Jay for inviting us into your world. You have an amazing positive attitude that's infectious. I think we need Puffy merchandise. A nice thick hoodie with Puffy on the front, and his paw prints on the sleeve. Once again, thank you.
Watching from South Africa where it's a toasty 35c/95F.
Welp looks like you two will get married on day! Yuppers! I’m happy for you Jay 💜💙
Love watching this as I am sweating in the heat of 30°C in Cape Town, South Africa

I'm glad you explained about the camera. I've been wondering why you never introduced your "assistant"!
Good morning Jay! Whooo weeeee its cold up there! 😳🥶🥶🥶 in Texas we are finally going up in temps almost 60 this week! Yay lol

always worth the wait for Jay s next post
I must say you are taking good care of your dog and that is great.
It’s to cold for that little dog!!! He needs a coat!!!! Further more he doesn’t need to be there at all!! Leave him at home with his mom!
You know its cold when the snow is like sand🥶🥶🥶
Jay
This is about the pup get a box of snack bags they are smaller than sandwich bags and you can put them on his feet before his booties and his paws won't get wet
Love everything you do
Thankyou
Puffy should have a wool sweater also.
Wow you've done a lot to your cabin since I last watched a few years ago!
Im sure you know that in case of an emergency you could also turn on your gas oven and open the door to heat. My Mom would never have anything but a gas stove and oven because of power outages. Love your puppy put a little water with the snow melt faster 🎉
Need to put a few peace of left over 2x4 at the bottom so they can hold that plywood up.
Apply some wedges in behind the studs abutting the original cottage. Apply spray foam in the gap once you're ready to insulate. No problamo.
I always laugh when you pull out the jar of plastic cheese. With Puffy there, don't use the yellow snow. 🤣 Autotracking on the tripod. 👍
i am suprised that you are using 2x4 walls.
I hate the cold, lol. It's -3F (-19C) here this morning, This is cold even for Connecticut, USA. I know you love it.
I have a few of these and they make starting screws so much easier DEWALT DT7701 QZ Magnetic Bit Holder. The sleeve can be pulled forward over the screw head and stop the screw going sidewards.
9:06 LOL 😂 looks like a noose 😂😂😂
Exelente video saludos desde burley Idaho
Great vid. Thx.
As the pup gets more adventurous you might want to consider a locator caller just incase.
Hi Jay, I’ve seen many use dog coats in sub temperatures.. just suggestion, thinking your layers to keep warm, puppy has layer of fun alone
so jealous of you Jay (my name is Jay too)
Never done it myself, but I’ve seen on the Outdoor Boys channel, cleaning dishes with snow… don’t know if that’s just good enough to pack away and clean properly at home, or whether it does a proper job of washing up… but thought it might make something easier for you 😎

Man that is a nice anorak. Wool can save your life. Looking for one for myself
Yeaaaa Puffy again! ❤️
I have the same generator, I do a complete maintenance every spring go to you tube it shows you how to do it ,I never have a problem and it always starts and have never had any problems with it
As it hits 15 degrees in ga with 1” of snow, I finally feel like I’m 1/50th of what jay experienced in this video! 😂

@ I’m not saying it’s bad here, I’m just happy to see snow and watch his videos while looking out the window. Hope you’re staying warm up there!

For the generator add some seafoam to the gas it helps immensely.
I love the way you talk to Puffy just like a child. These videos are getting better on each release. You are peeling the curtain back in each episode.....Great job
You should have covered the gap by lowering the sheet to the perimeter joist.
I'm not too fond of 'Doges' at all. But your little 'Doge' is adorable!

also the go sideways not up and down ... again it is for twist stopping ...

USe some wood clamps when joining the walls it will save you holding them
Run a scrap piece under where your plywood is going, and you can rest the plywood on it and not have to fight it so much when you’re putting on your walls
Lol, I thought first your girlfriend was there on the camera until you told me about yourself with a tracking camera. That's pretty cool. I didn't know about that.
I am no expert ,But you need to put the roof on that extension ASAP.
