Angles Way Long Distance Trail. Part 1 - Gt Yarmouth to Fritton. Woodland Tarp and Bivi Wild Camp.

  • In this video, I am back on the trail again - this time, heading away from the coast along the Angles Way on the Norfolk/Suffolk border. This 93 mile long distance path follows the river Waveney from its mouth in the Norfolk Broads to its source in the Brecks and beyond.
It is a trail I have been wanting to walk for a long time and seemed right to take this route back to where I started this walking adventure all those years ago and thus completing the route - almost circumnavigating the county of Norfolk.
This stage was very enjoyable, despite the windy and overcast conditions. Passing by the expanse of Breydon Water and the Roman fort at Burgh Castle before looping away from the river along sandy lanes and pretty tracks and eventually arriving at the ribbon like lake at Fritton.
A well earned dinner and a couple of boozy hot chocolates before an early night in my bivvy to rest before tomorrows adventure.
I hope you enjoy the video.
    Thanks for watching.

Episodes such as this walking tour are the quintessence of why Simon’s channel (and Andy’s, too) is hands down the best viewing/channel on TH-cam. I live in the Sonoran Desert of Southern Arizona and find these walking tours of the English countryside entrancing and mesmerizing. I will watch this multiple times over and enjoy every second. Thanks so much for doing these walks and filming them for us.

I met some American tourists last week in Epping Forest and they were telling how they'd visited the Tower of London and staggered that it was a 1000 years old. I had a little laugh and then told them that literally 40 feet from where they were standing was an Iron Age Hill Fort around 2500 years old! Completely blew them away - sometime we in the UK don't appreciate what we have. Mind you, I still want to revisit the States and Canada some time 🙂

Simon, another great video and looking forward to seeing the follow-on parts/sections of your trip.
I have just returned from the Broads. I chartered a motorboat for a week even though my perference is sailing. I have chartered boats in Norfolk for quite a few years now and I have always enjoyed the break, even if it rains! Looking at the ground under foot it looks like you filmed part 1 early May while I was there. I was there 6th to the 13th and I had a few days of very heavy rain.
Breydon Water is a nice stretch of water, but unluckily I was there when the low tide/slack water was 06:00 or 20:00 and I noticed the Berney Arms is still shut which is the nearest pub to Breydon to moor at (to my knowldge and not including pubs Great Yarmouth). I opted for a 05:00 start and glad I did there was not a single boat on Breydon and it was like a mirror! Lots of mud though!
The River Bure as it enters Great Yarmouth and where it joins Breydon has a nasty tidal stream, I have seen many a hire boat travelling backwards or sideways because they didnt heed the tidal warnings. Just to add to it if you have a boat that requires a substantial air draft/clearance, its always is a nervous experience going under Vauxhall and Acle Bridges even if you have calculated it correctly. They are both extremely low...
Missed out on the River Ant, which is one of my favourite broads.. It rained so much that I couldn't get the boat under Ludham Bridge!

The angles way is a truly wonderful journey especially when you go through the heart of suffolk. My favourite walk locally having done the peddars way the weavers way and the boudicca way. I'm new to your channel and really enjoyed watching. Look forward to part 2.

Great as always and close to where I walk my dog, I know this area very well.
I can't help thinking Charles Dickens will be very surprised if he was to visit today.

Brilliant. Following your walk on the map reminded me of the Arthur Ransome book "we didn't mean to go to sea" where they sailed through Great Water. Really enjoy your videos Simon. Thanks.
