Incidentally, due to Covid, WRC didn't happen for that year, but in the AP rally series, it came 1st and 2nd in every single race. The evolution (mild hybrid due to new regs) was also 1st and 2nd at Monaco. Mad little beast. I tested the Merc, Hyundai N, Civic and Fords back when, but the GR was my choice. Ordered before the media hype hit and my test drive while waiting for delivery sealed the deal.
Had mine a couple of years. Not a car for a commute through Central London, but if you live in the boonies where you're on wet, twisty, pot hole laden B roads most of the time

@@uv77mc85 at lower speeds, can crunch a bit, but scoots over when moving a bit quicker. The newer (much more expensive) version is stiffer still and seems to cater for folk who want to track rather than B road it. Doesn't seek to be selling nearly as well.
As an added bonus to how great the GR Yaris is, you can sell it to some gulluble American in 25 years for the same price or more than what you bought it for when it was brand new, lol.
My first car was a Mk2 Escort RS. insurance for young drivers was less punishing back then though. Trust me, buy a shit box - you're less likely to lose your license, won't be bothered by door dinks and the like, and may even learn a bit of basic car repair, especially if you have somewhere local with garage space that will show you the ropes.
picked up one of the last new 2024 rallye's in australia before the facelift coming and drove it home last night - dude its a proper rally car - i drove a gr corolla is more daily passenger car with gr drivetrain bolted onto it - you really have to be in a rallye to understand what its all about
Hey Rob, I've heard that the suspension is very composed and the gearbox is awesome. Some journalists compare these GR components to a GT3. What are your thoughts?
I'm getting the funds together as quickly as possible to get one while they're still around rrp. You can't compare it with anything from the last 30 years, even with other homologation specials it's one of the most extreme ones, with almost nothing in common with the regular Yaris. Built to race from scratch rather than a modified version of the regular one. They're under appreciated at the moment especially as they are so easily mistaken for the hybrid gr sport, but still holding their money.
They didnt. Chris Harris is as honest as they come in the car reviewing industry, if there is one man you can always count on being honest (and at times he`s even been too honestfor some brands) its Harris.
@blip_qild Yep, we do, and it's got uprated 300hp engine but it is heavier and bigger. I'd still pick the GR Yaris instead of Corolla. Plus, I just watched a track test video of a GR Corolla where the engine oil was 240+ degrees and the 4wd system overheated and switched to 2wd - on a cold day - not looking good.
@@rainregn996 Yes, but the engine exists now and we are talking about engine, not car. Of course, this is nitpicking a bit, but it would be good to stick to the facts.
The car does everything well, it accelerates, brakes and turns great, the issue is that it has a lot of grip in the sensations, it seems like it is going on rails and that takes away from the fun, plus the sound of the engine amplified by the speakers sounds very artificial, as if It was an appliance, and the exhausts are as if silenced. In 2022, they took me for a ride in a pearl black one, with the circuit pack and the aerodynamic kid that cost about five thousand dollars more, we were going almost flat out and I thought it was going to leave me speechless but the truth is which was not the case, only a downshift to third and a great thrust of its engine made my head almost touch the windshield, it was what impressed me the most along with its great braking power, but based on comments I expected much more from this car . There are some journalists who think the same as me, but well I think there are two realities, the car that gives you sensations and the one that makes the best times, the Yaris is part of the latter's club. When you get in it feels too cheap and its plastics leave a lot to be desired, they look like a VW Gol Trend from before and all this makes it feel like a "vitaminized little stroller" but not of class.- If you buy it for A safe circuit is great, but if you buy it as a touring car to make a “facha”, as they say in Argentina, it is not so good because it is small, uncomfortable and uses too much gas like a Mustang, according to what I saw in a video from a private individual. from Spain that has the Yaris and compares the consumption with the Muscle Car. Although the suspension is softer than a Megane 3 Rs 265, it is still hard, and it copies every small imperfection of the asphalt in the city. In conclusion, for its price it offers a lot, but it is not the car that you say drives me crazy, neither for its design (although its nose is very rally), nor for its sound, nor for the quality of materials, what makes it precious is the intervention in its development of the quadruple WRC world champion, the Finnish Tommi Mäkinen, which ensures that this vehicle is precise and efficient when it comes to rolling on the track, on a track day, even surpassing other higher priced cars.
That’s because our road rules & laws are laughable compared to the rest of the world, we are the biggest nanny state when it comes to driving, our road speed limits are from the 50s, our highest speed limit on the main highway/freeway roads is limited to 110 km/h, we have Mobile speed cameras almost on every street now, we have red light & speed cameras almost on every traffic light, we have highway patrol hiding in bushes & in blind view spots to catch anyone speeding, it is such a Nazi speeding/driving fine regime we have here. We are a joke compared to other first world nations in Europe & North America. Most highways in France, Italy & so forth are capped at 140km/h & Germany as we know has the Autobahn.
