  • You asked for it, so we made it. Henry Catchpole's raid review of the much anticipated Toyota GR Yaris. This Gazoo Racing homologation special really is something indeed and we took it out for a drive somewhere it should feel very much at home.

    Toyota: The GT86 doesn't need more horsepower.
    Also Toyota: Heres a 268 HP Yaris.

    • @GarryParker
      @GarryParker 4 ปีที่แล้ว +65

      Good point. Also, as the Yaris is turbocharged, I bet spending a few hundred quid on a map will easily take the torque up to 300 lb ft, precisely twice that of the GT86.

      @bliglum 4 ปีที่แล้ว +79

      Also, people make excuses about how Toyota, the RICHEST car company in the world, couldn't afford to develop their own Supra, their own halo car...... And yet, this homologation special exists.. Furthermore, less wealthy car companies do it all the time, GM, Ford, Nissan and even little Mazda, all can apparently afford to develop their own sports car platform.. But oh, not Toyota, they can't do it because of affordability. They must share platforms... .. LOL Idiots.

    • @noahp6886
      @noahp6886 4 ปีที่แล้ว +32

      @@bliglum depends on how many cars they plan to sell and at what price. Homologations can be sold at higher prices if they are selling a few hundred in a few markets. Selling a global car at higher rates has different costs associated with it.

    • @bliglum
      @bliglum 4 ปีที่แล้ว +15

      @@noahp6886 I know, there are any number of excuses that can be made, bean counters, it's a numbers game, etc. etc.. But C'mon man! We're talking about the richest car company in the world. Acting like they can't afford to develop their own platform is just asinine.
      And yes, being efficient is what allowed Toyota to become the richest car company in the world.. But they've developed their own premiere sports cars every time before (granted, with some help from Yamaha on many occasions) Not sure what stopped them this time... The Subaru twins (BRZ, 86) were excusable. But not BMW. BMW's infamously garbage reliability does not mesh well with Toyota... To say nothing of the fact that the Supra will stay gimped, as BMW will not have it competing with their top models. Same reason why the 86 never got the power everyone cried out for, as of course Subaru could not have it competing with their Halo car, the WRX... So, Even though the MKIV Supra competed with M3's, Corvette's, and 911's in it's time.... This new "Supra" will remain a pretender. Only existing to suck up money from equally pretentious ignoramuses.

    Thank you all for watching. As an aside to the homologation stuff that I mention, it now looks like the first rally version might be an AP4 variant out in Australia early in 2021. Anyway, this has certainly been a wildly hyped car, so hopefully this review provides a bit of light and shade. As I say, it's great fun, but certainly not perfect.

      In my opinion the best cars aren't perfect, they seem to have more of a soul with the flaws. Wish they would bring this to the US, hopefully we will get the GR- Corolla and we can have a little bit of fun on the other side of the pond. Thanks as always Henry, I always get excited when there is a little notification for a Carfection video. I saw that Chris Harris ended up wanting to make love to it. I was skeptical at first, also at the Harris part (!). But how lucky are we to have a car like this? We used to have homologation specials en masse. Now the black dials and racing DNA is no more. And the laughs per mile is high, especially because it´s flawed. But that hand brake, that engine and everything. It is the flawed ones we fall for, it is the flawed ones that are keepers!

Even if you are earning say 50k with tax and all that I imagine you'll get people who have bought the Yaris GR on finance and intend to pay it off fully that way and people who are rich enough to throw £30k down. @@Kreature303 how on earth is it a rip off? Did you miss the part where he explained that Toyota have built a 3 door body that is totally unique to this car? Do you have any idea how much that costs? And they didn't stop there. They developed a brand new 4wd system that is totally unique to this car. And they built a brand new engine which is totally unique to this car. And a floor pan which is totally unique to this car. And body panels...and suspension design...and pretty much all of it.
      In other words do you not comprehend how much money Toyota are losing on each and every one of these, yet you think it should be as cheap as a Fiesta ST which shares 95% of its parts with a standard Fiesta? Your logic is crazy.

    • @MD-uu5nt
      @MD-uu5nt 4 ปีที่แล้ว +16

      @@Kreature303 the Focus RS is a very compromised car in comparison to this. Ford did not put anything like the R&D into that Toyota have here. Hence why it gets a pretty lukewarm reception now from both Ford enthusiasts and car reviewers. I drove one a couple of years ago with the intention of buying it but it didn't feel special at all. The ride was unbearably harsh for a car that is supposedly a rally car for the road.
      "its still a Yaris" is such a dumb comment when it literally shares none of the mechanical components from the standard Yaris, not even the floor pan. I often consider many Skoda/Audi/VW the same because they all share the same MQB floor pan. This doesn't share the floor pan with any other Yaris so how can it still be "just a Yaris"? Or is the current Golf still the same as the mk1 just because it shares a name?

    Beautiful cinematography and eloquently delivered as always. A small, relatively light, quick, affordable and, above all, fun car. The rally development doesn’t hurt either. It’s easy to see why it’s grabbed the attention of enthusiasts everywhere. In a world of zillion pound hypercars and when even many sports cars have developed to such a stage that their performance is only exploitable on a track, this looks like the perfect road car for our times. Even the badge isn’t shouty, so captures the zeitgeist. Yep, perfect. Let’s hope we see more of this type of car.

That of course means it’ll probably be in the form of a Corolla, which we hope will be available then in a hatchback. Being a bigger car it’ll probably be slower, but by then there would be enough aftermarket support for the engine to make good power, at least, the way I see it.

      It's a unique sound as there are elements of an uneven cylinder count such as Audi RS engines however also has elements of a six cylinder, I wonder what it sounds like with the speakers disconnected. I'll try pull the fuse out and give it a spin!

      Definitely all speakers, there is zero intake and exhaust noise from my experience. It's all artificial.

      @@sodazman will sound decent with a nice exhaust system mind you. Very much a baby V6 from a sound perspective!

    For those of us of a certain age the Yaris is a definite throwback to the Impreza of the mid-90s with it being based on a dull reliable car but with interesting running gear, and at an affordable price point.
