@@1uzfe Well you can place half the blame on the regulators from the past as well. If it weren't made on purpose to be so expensive to get a foreign made car into the states, we might see more cars like this and some of the other neat cars we can't get here. Due to the regulations, it doesn't make sense to have to spend hundreds of thousands to a regulatory body just to bring a model here and only sell a few thousand. If it weren't so, it would be profitable, and we'd be able to buy a Yaris GR.
@@MoistGrundle I agree but ultimately restrictions on foreign car import is there to provide domestic companies a level playing field in terms of competition but they’re simply not as competent and competitive as European and Asian companies 🤦♂️ like yeah we don’t get the Toyota gr but why isn’t there an American equivalent? Even when there used to be one (ford focus off the top of my head) the sales were piss poor because we the consumers end up buying import cross overs anyway
@@1uzfe Solid point, honestly. One could also say the domestic brands choose not to make those cars out of selfish priorities. The other models sold, just not as well, so fuck it, focus solely on the models that make us billions. Of course, it makes some sense from a business stand point, but it only ever seems to be American car companies that take such a cut and run approach to car sales figures. "This model made us $250 million two years ago, and now it only makes us $200 million. Shut down the plant."
@@MoistGrundle sadly, it has more to do (than anything else) with the marketing of SUV and CUV models - they're "safer" on our shitty roads that no one can drive on... Gimme a quick accelerating car that hugs the road any day over a lumbering monstrosity of a SUV.
@Default Username yeah I'm hugely skeptical of all those predicting how tunable these will be. They're already pushing it for power, and they've put a lot of technology in place to handle its stock power safely
@@sexycowman Exactly. I doubt there’s a huge amount of overhead left in this engine to take advantage of without severely compromising longevity. The definition of engine modification is making the engine more efficient than the factory did. I think Toyota has pretty much pulled out all the stops to get maximum efficiency from it at the factory so trying to get more out of it will probably be a fools errand.
Eyes should be kept on HKS who currently are pushing their Yaris to 450+ hp on stock internals. With just bolt ons like a larger turbo, exhaust, and inter cooler (probably a couple more) they have been able to push out 375hp at 40psi. This 3 cyl is really quite something else.

a 3.2L I6 with 530hp ish, now that sounds alot like fun to me, but maybe a bit to much power? think the direction of making the cars lighter is more ideal than doing the MURICA throw more hp into it approach
Toyota is working with mazda on an inline 6 so eh maybe a supra with toyota engine in the near future just maybe. Also they probably may use a new platform like atking one from lexus and modifying it like a yaris gr who knows 🤣
@@Stale_Mahoney that's not MURICA; that's the point of the Supra, a sports car. Or the GTR. Or any number of non- American cars. The point was Toyota using their own engine.

Awesome video! I know it's a completely different vehicle/application, but SeaDoo does have a 1.5 liter and now 1.6 liter inline 3, with 300 HP. Obviously doesn't take away from the car, but it's impressive what can be gotten from these small motors.
@@Conservator. inline 6s don't have the best secondary order balance, they swing pistons in pairs. The V6 doesn't have good primary balance but it's about as good as it gets on second order vibration.
@@BuffMyRadius I4drive explained that an inline 6 doesn’t not have any secondary imbalance last week. Nor does an inline 3 but it will rock over de lengths of the engine. An inline 6 is like 2 inline 3 mirrored so that the rocking of both i3 dampen each other out.

@Thomas Barth At 6 cylinders this would equate to 3.2 liters already. While you could bore them out, these are already pretty decently sized. Sure they aren't 3.4 like the absolute biggest displacement Supras, but they certainly aren't small, at more than the original 3.0 of the *JZ-gte motors

im still driving my 1990 toyota corolla gts with the 4age twice a week to work, the other days i switch up with 06 accord 5speed and the 02 toyota highlander.
A lot of people in Wyoming feel the need to own massive trucks and suv's as well. My 1980 Toyota Tercel gets me pretty much every where I want to go including up in the Bighorn Mountains. People really under estimate what smaller cars are capable of. It does better in the snow with snow tires on than my suburban did with all terrain tires and four wheel drive. It also gets about 5 times better gas mileage than my suburban did and is a lot more fun to drive.
I have never loved a youtube channel so much lol please keep it up!!! So informative
Love the Scotty Kilmer reference! He probably liked it as well.
That, or I'm getting sued
@@d4a Naw...... I doubt Scotty would see it as a bad thing. Scotty probably has (tons of) money to burn these days. I doubt he would bother going after anybody, unless they were being mean. I am a bit like Scotty. Been driving only Toyota since the early 90's. Definitely saved a lot of money by making that decision long a go.
@@pH7screwtube He doesn't take jokes very well in my experience. ;)
I quit watching Scotty after the 3rd one I watched where the actual subject matter had nothing to do with what the title of the video led to believe it was.
@@ricklewis5804 You somehow thought we cared???
thanks for the detailed explanation
especially the tumble flow part ... one of the mostly underestimated details in head flow
Please do a video on all the other parts of the gr. No one else has this level of detail
Congratulations. You've rendered all my Mechanical Engineering professors useless. I could've gotten my qualification just by watching your videos. Great work.
I doubt I rendered them useless 😊, but still thank you for the kind words.
Great video! Loads of info I didn’t know. I currently have a Mitsubishi Evo IX with the glorious 4G63 but have just ordered a GR Yaris with this engine!
Another benefit of a wider valve included angle: It raises the pentroof, which allows more room for bigger valves.
Loved this video! I love your casually explained deep dives. Honestly some of the best technical info I've seen on TH-cam! You've earned my subscribe on the second video I've watched. Excited to watch more!!!
Also...im an American who desperately wants this engine lol
Arguably one of the highlight cars of 2020. Great informative video
"A regular person with a job can go to their nearest Toyota…" except if you're left out by Toyota by living in the US 😭
Blame the crossover buyers
Adding value is what my boy @driving 4 answers does really well. Another great presentation!
Crazy little engine. Can't wait to see how it does in the years to come.
@Default Username any car is if you take it to a dealer. We'll just have to wait and see how it holds up.
@Default Username why tho?
@Default Username I see... on the opposite side, the A110 II's engine would actually be quite cheap to keep running (Megane RS engine)?
Another brilliant video ! D4A always nails it.
I've never been excited about a 3 cylinder before...
Konigsegg put one out 8 months ago. So I'm ready to here about a second one.
The inline 3 is an underrated engine design, I like it because it has an odd number of cylinders in the block giving it a distinct sound.
@@TheRealFobican why no 7 cylinder then 😀
@@ivanlazarevic78 Yes these are by far most rare engine configuration before inline 8 engines that existed in the past as brand new.
I never did and never will believe me i even hate sportsbike with only 3 cylinder
Yeh and a Workshop in Australia with basically a stock engine (onlly mechanical update being new valve springs), on a hub dyno managed to squeeze out 473 hp *at the wheels* and is currently the most powerful GR Yaris on the planet….
HMM and all those times ypu all bagged us aussies & called us crazy, even would say australianwas a real life mad max film.
WELL WELL WELL.. and now with all that experience we got making those crazy hp contraptions on that set, NOW IT US US WHO IS LAUGHING MY DOGS OF POOR OUTPUT POWER
Another great engine video, thank you ! I would love to see one about Mazda Skyactiv engines, and differences between skyactiv-g and skyactiv-x.
You can always go for a geo metro with the inline 3 engine and performance mod the heck out of it to reach ridiculous amounts of power with a few tricks to create a masterpiece of an economy car sleeper.
Got any video of your Geo Metro that you can share?

Really interesting video and really cool engine.
The more I hear of this car the more tempted I am to get one 😅
Both the funniest and the most informative video. Love the tongue-in-cheek dig at Koenigsegg 😆 Fast becoming my favorite channel.
imagine if the new "supra" had the yaris gr engine with just twice as many pistons.
Drawback is that its open deck
a 3.2L I6 with 530hp ish, now that sounds alot like fun to me, but maybe a bit to much power? think the direction of making the cars lighter is more ideal than doing the MURICA throw more hp into it approach
Great idea!
Big thumbs-up for the great drawings and commentary

Cool. Learnt a lot about modern engines from this video. Nice.
They give a 10 year warranty on this amazing car here.
Gonna need it because that thing is gonna die before then. 3 cylinders and that much HP = no longevity.

@@bushmaster4481 What do you mean by buzzed, mate? I'm not familiar with the term.
Well it's a sports engine a low displacement, a turbo, and a lot of HP/cylinder. I'm expecting significant use of the rev range and spirited driving. I guess we'll find out how it holds up over the next few years. I'm hoping it'll be good though. I'm so sad most car manufacturers don't make proper sports pedigree engines any more.
Cheers for the video and the all the work behind. I really enjoy watching, and going back sometimes in the explanation for fully understand. I was even before yours explanations be able to figure out how it's work and the choices made, that was exciting and enthralling during all the video. You may succeed to make the comprehensiv this high- technological engine. It was very pleasant to watch and pedagogic I have found. Good continuation from Elsass in France ;)!
"world's most powerful inline 3 engine" -for now. No doubt Koenigsegg will change that in a couple of years. With that said, boy would I want a Yaris GR now.
Its already in their Gemera.
@@88wrongway that car isn't produced yet. So it's not production.

Another great video!!
Thank you for your efforts in putting this together!!
Can you make a video about the 1.9 TDI engine from VW? It's called legendary in many countries for its longevity
Doesn't the modern VW engines have timing belt issues and being overly complicated in design?
The 1.9 tdi is the ony tdi that last longer than a average gasoline engine from other brands, the original 1.9 was make by peugeot in 1980s and was sed by close to all brands or bought by and vw put a 1.4 l turbo on it and it makes maximum 110hp on the normal turbo and 130hp on the special edition tubo one thats the same turbo but that resists to more power. The engine na had 50hp in peugeot and 60 hp in vw and dacia
Finally a detailed explanation of the yaris engine
You should've titled it the World's most powerful production inline 3, so people wouldn't compare it to the gemera
I clearly explained it in the vid. The word production wouldn't fit properly into the thumbnail no matter what I did. It just ends up looking like a giant boring wall of text
@@d4a ohh yeah I already watched the video, and btw great video man keep it up! 👍👍
Im posting this car over 1year later, and this 3cyl engine is absolute beast on stock internals is pushed to 500hp.
Awesome video! I know it's a completely different vehicle/application, but SeaDoo does have a 1.5 liter and now 1.6 liter inline 3, with 300 HP. Obviously doesn't take away from the car, but it's impressive what can be gotten from these small motors.

That's so cool, now I want the same thing but with the missing cylinder.
But I3 sounds cool, similar (not equal) to the V6 since it is half of the V6.
@@pAirA_ But I already have a 3.0 Busso V6, if I get a turbo japanese car, I want that "Fast and Furious" i4 sound from my childhood.
@@pAirA_
I’d say it’s half of a inline 6.
No secondary imbalance and a single head.
Ok it’s a bit longer than a V6, I’ll give that 😉
@@Conservator. inline 6s don't have the best secondary order balance, they swing pistons in pairs. The V6 doesn't have good primary balance but it's about as good as it gets on second order vibration.
@@BuffMyRadius
I4drive explained that an inline 6 doesn’t not have any secondary imbalance last week.
Nor does an inline 3 but it will rock over de lengths of the engine.
An inline 6 is like 2 inline 3 mirrored so that the rocking of both i3 dampen each other out.

Congrats on the purchase! I feel like this car will become a classic
I have a feeling that if we add 3 more cylinders we can get 3JZ... Think about it, toyota have made their own engine from scratch. They have foundation to do that now.
They’re co developing a inline 6 with Mazda
@@MaddNomad1015 We won't get pure toyota supra at this point.
@Thomas Barth But somebody will do liners, i am sure. People with ideas & bottomless pockets
