Good point. I got FSD 12 just today. When I was at the wheel it felt weird. When I got in the back seat and my wife "supervised" in the driver's seat, I realized it drives almost 100% perfectly. Better than either of us. It's just not... US!
I’m tired of seeing people try to make the car drive like them. The car is trying to be an autonomous vehicle not emulate you. Safely getting from point an and b is the point.
the car is in fact emulating human driving (good human drivers) with end-to-end neural net training.
@anthonylieu9068 nobody should disengage because they don't like the selected lane behind a car to go faster unless it's incorrect for a upcoming nav route.
You are applying the incorrect definition of Emulator. It is in Emulation mode. In the context of software, you'll learn that an Emulator vs emulation has a different definition.
lol….john is a terrible driver. It got in the correct lane with a turn in.2 miles.
@@wreckinball11I know…wild.
32:37 You chose the spot John. Just sayin'. You got yourself the ticket.
The car suggested it which was already incorrect.
Yes the car suggests but you must choose the legal spot… this was pilot error!
@@Floris82 Go back everybody and look @ 32:10. The car did not pick the spot. John did ("Let's see if I push this.").

Hello mate.
How are you today
If you think you need to slow down when you see a cop, that means you're going too fast...
I always get the fuzzies when i see a cop. I always carry a 20,-- with me when he stops me because i was too fast.
That he would always have been correct is besides the point.
I will be driving under the speed limit by a mile or two because I'm chilling and still slow down if I see a cop.
I do instinctively lift my foot off the gas when I see a cop. Muscle Memory
@@Hoss4Blues Probably a good idea.
lol, you were making me way more nervous than FSD. FSD seemed to have a plan and be executing and you kept freaking out because you didn't know what the plan was and it wasn't doing what you expected it to do. relax
Control freak yes.
3:20 John, I disagree with calling it a mistake when it stopped in front of the stop sign. The technically legal action is to stop in front of stop signs (with stop sign visible from windshield), and then safely creep forward for visibility...
This is incorrect. NO state has a requirement to stop at the stop sign. In most states, you stop at the stop line, or if there isn't one, stop before the crosswalk, or if there's neither, stop at the point just before entering cross traffic. A few states have variations on this, but NO state says to stop at the stop sign.
@shanedk 👍🏼 I'm glad to know someone knows this basic driving rule. 😊
Fired up my MY and drove to and from Costco this morning. No interventions and a perfect drive in Northern VA with some crazy, poorly-marked intersections.

It was 20 years ago, in March 2004, that DARPA held its first self-driving Grand Challenge. No team succeeded in completing the course in 2004. Things have come a long way in 20 years. I would guess that in 20 years from now, self driving will be endemic, at least in most countries on earth. But perhaps not all countries.
I remember that! That’s about when I started to track auto autonomy progress over the years and waiting for it to be reality. I just had my very first experience with FSD yesterday, WOW. 🤯 It was a good time to start!
Awesome ❤ video. Some thoughts on this video but FSd in general from a European viewpoint. I'm Swedish so what I say mat not imply to your specific country in Europe.
- Where USA has 4-way stops, Europe has round abouts
- Whereas USA has text on signs, Europe has standard signs
- USA has suicide lanes, Europe wtf
- USA has flashing red in cities att night, Europe que?
- USA has right on red, Europe wtf
- USA has its lights hanging in the sky, sometimes indicating all lanes. Europe has very clear lights on the ground and most times duplicated times, close and afar
There is a wild west still in USA, amazing you guys drive on the same side during night and day 😂❤
So if FSd manage USA it will master Europe which is a lot standardized, although thight roads in some cities. I'm sure other large regions is like Europe while USA is a jungle.
Love you Americans ❤
They are just kids with a printer.
The current stack in Europe has big problems with speed limit signs and regulations. It is good at seing a speed limit, but doesn't recognize the ending sign to return to default speed limit. When a speed limit ends, the default limit is based on the type of road not by some outdated map data. Also timed or weather related speed limits aren't recognized correctly. In some towns parents set up hand painted 30km/h signs, which it picks up (may be a good thing) but continues to follow, even after leaving the town. There are also some implicit rules, like ending a speed limit after a crossing when the speed limit is not repeated. Way to go!
Doc, I got my FSD today. Oh my GOD. It drives as well as I do, and sometimes better. I spent the day driving friends around (everybody was afraid to take the wheel) and they all said "OH my GOD!". Four way stops, roundsbouts, unprotected left turns, toddlers on the sidewalk...perfect! One problem is the car tends to try to follow the car ahead when it exits or changes lanes.
I noticed also that it is more prone to curb rash after the V12 update. During a night drive it turned toward a rail track in a y configuration on the road. All reported. Still have to pay attention when the cameras get sun glare in the mornings, and late afternoons. FSD works great as a assistant while driving. I would call it a self driving assistant.
Just got it this morning in Canada

Think you had enough coffee!
Agreed, hard to listen to him interrupt himself over and over
That is why I rarely watch him anymore...
34:12 These gates have sensors to detect vehicles, not timers, so they won't close on your back end until your vehicle clears the gate arm.
I once had one of those detecting my vehicle lower the bar on my VW Passat. Directly on the roof. Had to call the provider so he opens the gate again and call my insurance for the repairs.
@@wolfgangpreier9160 Edge case. How long ago, what manufacturer? Insurance company will turn around and sue the gate manufacturer who is then incented to improve their product.
Do not trust the sensors. They fail. Often. Also, some are on a timer to keep other cars out, but they are usually used with warning signs. I travel a lot for work. I see them all.
Tow trucks will ride your ass to get in behind you. Stop just past the arm and watch it close. So much fun.
I was thinking about this the other day. No one ever talks about making roads more FSD friendly. I'm thinking as Tesla moves from level 2 to level 3 it could identify roads/intersections that are dangerous and geofence the area. This could provide guidance for road design thus making everyone safer with or without FSD.
You'd might want to "geofence" a route, not necessarily the road. This way instead of making a difficult unprotected left turn in high speed traffic, it routes using a right turn followed by a protected U-turn.
true that !, and specially so in most dangerous spots or high speed zones even more (school zones, etc). As FSD is more than capable of dealing with most areas easily so far. May be by adding also QR codes providing specific information about temporary construction zones way ahead of time. May be a standardization for most FSD EVs could be developed to such effect.
FSD will never be level 3, it will go directly to level 5
Outstanding suggestion!
Roads avoided means other roads become more crowded. More crowded roads means slower traffic. Slower traffic is safer traffic, but at a cost.
I have a 2022 Model Y Performance and got the complimentary FSD and I used it yesterday for the first time. I did a total 1.5h trip (45m to and back) and I had 0 interventions. I was blown away. Back in October 2022 I bought a month of FSD to try it out and was not happy with it at all and only used it for the first day. It's come a LONG way. Color me impressed.
You told it to park in the non-parking place! And your rules for speed limits are drive 20%+ over the limit unless you see a police car and then do what is legally correct....
I don’t think he realized he touched that wrong parking area. The blue highlighting should have clued him in but he is new to it 🤘
@@Hoss4Blues John is emulating the absent-minded professor.😁
Wow, I'm in BC Canada and I had an update for my Model Y this morning and now I have FSD v12!!
It's amazing!
Still looking for an update to correct the multiple navigation errors 12.3 brought with it. May it come soon!
Brings a whole new meaning to “I can’t drive fifty-five”.
Good video. Thanks! My UPS driver friend says they teach the right turns when possible due to safety, not time savings.
Right turns only also markedly reduces gridlock.
Didn't it park in the spot you picked?
34:30 the car don't have to stop as long since it sees left and right at the same time, unlike humans.
You could add back to that and reaction time is much faster as well.
I’m still waiting but I have 5 friends with Tesla’s and they are RAVING about good it is.
Could you also show the navigation screen? I was curious what the navigation was doing when it surprised you at the UPS store. It makes it more fun to see what's up ahead. I heard that FSD v12 is not really connected to the screen showing the obstacles, it's using a neural network view of the environment.
2:49 I noticed that on my test drives too. It slows for random shadows. My guess is that it thinks those shadows are bumps or dips. Mine was FSD 12.3 on HW4.
Definitely/unfortunately still a few issues with FSD. However it’s getting better.
Love your tests/reviews.
I've been noticing that whenever there are "strange slowdowns" there are also large shadows crossing the road in front of the car and the shadows are usually making a straight line across the road.
Not to be that guy but your camera view needs a videographer. We don’t need to see the ceiling of your Tesla. You could then get the inserts out of the road view. Just a suggestion 😊
I will try our trial tomorrow. I will start when we are on the freeway, around town can wait until I get the feel of it. Great video, thanks!!
Very impressed!! I no longer get all tensed up when it is engaged. My hardware 4 MY did great today. I love the parking feature.

I was blown away when it slowed for speed bumps and dips.
You told it to park there.
I have two Tesla's in the family (daughter and myself). Daughter got her free trial Saturday night so we took it for a quick spin around the neighborhood. It's pretty scary trying it out for the first time. I think one time it didn't see a stop sign so my daughter intervened. There was no stop sign on the map so not sure if it was going to see it. Another time the lane markers were bad on the road so it kind of went in the middle of the two lanes (both lanes going the same direction so not going into oncoming traffic or anything like that). She intervened at that time as well as there was a car coming up from behind. My Tesla is two years older so I haven't gotten my free trial yet. I'm hoping I get it soon. I'm thinking it may take some time to trust the FSD, but at first it may be more nerve-racking than just driving yourself.
That is just amazing... wish we had that in Switzerland
For what?If you cant drive just use public transport!
My MYLR is hardware 4 and FSD is doing pretty good so far
Agreed, 12.3 is a real improvement. Try and relax a little. You are making me more nervous than the car.
could you test auto parking between 2 cars? need see more to make sure it can park well, thanks.
I've done that and it performed beautifully.
21:52 - How do you know it's 2024: The car "drives itself", but the mail company does not send notifications for important letters? Come on. 😀
"A beautiful day for biking right now." - Yep. 😎 He rules.
Great video!
Please, you and James Douma must talk about FSD!!! 😉
I would add in a timer for unprotected, complex, high traffic left turns.
If waiting longer than 3 minutes, turn right and reroute.
Maybe, they can add satellite or other Tesla car data to see how bad traffic is
If Tesla can show statistically that free FSD reduces accidents significantly 1/ They can bundle FSD insurance....cash up front 2/ regulators may be impressed. 3/ if itnhit the nantional states then game over.
Just got my 30 day trial yesterday, and it drove me around the Atlanta east side three times yesterday with minimal interventions. WOW! I still probably won't buy it, because I don't intend to have my car out there as a robotaxi, but who knows.
35:41 I had a similar situation occur yesterday coming back to Inman Park from South Candler in Decatur, on Memorial Drive. A MARTA bus stopped ahead of me, several cars up, in my lane. I actually disengaged because I assumed it would just stop behind the bus, but just before I did, the car had started following the cars in front of me around the bus. I wonder if it uses cars in front of you as cues for what it should do.
I just finished buying and picking up my 2024 Model 3LR (turned in a '21 M3LR). I WAS NOT even offered an FSD test despite many others in the show room doing them, some I'm not even sure were buying, just kicking tires so to speak. I even had to ask the advisor I was working with if I got the free month of FSD, yes, in about 72 hours.
Yes Canada has it too!

Everyone? I paid for FSD in Oct'19 and didn't get it until midway in the pandemic. Would be nice if we had first dibs on the new releases for our patience.
By the by, this V12 is only in the US. I'm in Canada, eh?
Canada's getting it, but oddly enough, so far mostly on HW3 cars.
18:35 - The thing people in other countries need to understand is, at least in the US, speed limits are a revenue-generating thing, not a safety thing. They're DELIBERATELY set low for that purpose. Traffic engineers say to set the speed limit at the 85th percentile; that would mean that no more than 1 out of every 6 or 7 cars should be exceeding the speed limit. If exceeding the speed limit is the norm, it's set too low. All there is to it.
Thanks John. Regarding rolling onto the double yellow to give room for the parked car at 12:40, I don't know about Georgia specifically, but in most states that isn't illegal per se, rather the double yellow just means no overtaking and passing.
3:29 FSD might want to keep that behavior. I got pulled over for doing that at a similar intersection where the stop sign was far from the edge. And no it wasn’t a road with trucks, it was in an area with multiple apartment complexes.
Yeah, agreed! I think John mistakenly called FSD's action a mistake. FSD did the safest, legal action by stopping in front of the stop sign. This is especially important when a sidewalk runs perpendicular to a stop sign. Sadly, pedestrians and cyclists are often hit by cars that don't initially stop in front of stop signs...
I use Grab taxi service in asia and they have fixed pick up and drop off points. I could imagine this together with avoidance if complex situations in an intial robotaci service in order to reduce edge cases.
Still no FSD on my Tesla. Anxiously looking forward to trying it!

A problem that i think FSD will face now is, as the car becomes a better more confident driver, people will get more nervous.
We've had FSD v12 for a couple weeks and the more I drive with it, the less nervous I am. Such a big change from v11 which did have me nervous in town. FSD v11 drove like a robot, v12 drives like a human.
@@lbeck37 Your a lucky man, I would love to experience V12. We don't have it in Australia. Enjoy...😁

Do I need hardware 3 to run version 12.3? If not, what does hardware4r give you?
Yes. HW3 should be able to run 12.3. Google..." What does HW4 in a Tesla include?".
I've found that FSD too cautious when pulling out on 4-lane roads. I saw you waited for 5 minutes! Tesla does warn specifically about those situations. I've found I have to take over so I can find that spot and jet into it. Definitely needs improvement.
Does this version still nag you to force hands on?
Thanks for the videos :)
BTW - the car actually did a great job parking in the spot that YOU selected 🙂
The second time, since you selected a LEGAL parking spot, I noticed you were much more impressed with the results.... 😀
There's a good chance it will also identify handicapped parking spots as potential target parking spots as well, and of course it will be the responsibility of the driver to select an appropriate target spot from the options presented as well... 🤔
2:55 - It likely saw the light change due to shadows on the road. That's the drawback, if you only have cameras. And it likely slowed down as many cars do slow down in such a situation due to the street entering from the left.
So excited for FSD. Hope it comes to Australia soon. If so, it will need to modify its speed. If I did the equivalent of 64 mph in a 55 zone (103 km/h in a 90 km/h zone), I would definitely get a ticket and if I did it routinely, I would lose my licence in no time. By the way, John, some feedback on your camera set up: the view out the windscreen is a little overexposed and the view of the screen was a bit low in resolution.
How are you able to FSD drive that long without touching the wheel? Mine keeps yelling at me to keeps my hands on the wheel at all times. Thanks
Auto speed issue I have is 35mph is 47mph and 55mph is 67 to 72
.... Humm. Plus you lose the ability to use the scroll wheel to slow
Service street seem to be v12, but Highway appears to be mostly v11
What have you experienced?
You can still use the scroll wheel to change speed IF you disable autospeed.
The speed is dependent on your FSD profile as well.
If you don’t like the speed on a stretch of road, disengage and let them know. 👍🏻
Question: is it following the flow of traffic?
@@RobertLoPinto I wouldn’t recommend it.
While it may not always drive the speed you would, the ETA calculations are spot on, and it’s a surprisingly wonderful thing to not have to adjust the speed all the time like we had to.
Also, you can use the accelerator to speed up and let Tesla know it’s too slow.
You can also press on the accelerator to get it moving faster while fsd is still engaged.
No one goes the speed limit well except that Astrovan Kappa
Just got it last night, it’s raining in Southern California, but the first try resulted in the route showing a left turn and the car turning right. Degraded FSD or just too new to know how to use this.
I learned about making left turns in the city when I was 17 years old, it is faster and safer.
Press the accelerator when it's driving slow and it usually speeds up and stays going faster.
Thank you for sharing John. Just wondering if @tesla their videos of the training algorithm feed geo tag? If possible, it might solve the problems of local style driving. When fsd moves from one area to the next it adapts its driving style to data captured in that area. Just an thought 😊
I have to intervene a lot on right turns because it almost hits the curb. And in my neighborhood there's tree sticking out further than the curb. Which the car does not see.
I am so excited to receive my FSD offer. How did they notify you? Did it just appear as an update on your cellphone or in the car as usual?
Suspense is killing me.

I think Tesla shouldn't worry about being bigger than Aramco etc., it should be solely focused on existing and leading in it's own chosen spheres of influence. Other than that focus, it's silly and apples/oranges. Nice drives - good to point out what's being sane/dubious. Looking good to my thinking.

Thanks for doing these demo's but that first "Stop sign" 3:25 ✋️ manoeuvre was correct under Australia road law, or you would have gotten a ticket.
Dude you had to select the parking place so the car didn't put you into a place you would get a ticket you selected that spot to park. If you had kept going forward slowly it would have shown you more parking options and you end up selecting which parking spot to park in.
Love love love it!!! I want a Tesla so bad!
I notice quite a few people parallel parked pointing against the direction of traffic in this video. Is that legal in Georgia? Also. . . I'm enjoying the patter. I find it quite informative.
I just tried my free FSD today. Quite remarkable, but I think it’s just bad enough that it won’t instill enough confidence in people to drive carelessly. I think that was an unintended safety measure.
So HW4 is not running FSD yet. It's very interesting to hear that its actually in Emulation mode. I'm not aware of other channels stating this. This is an important detail to mention. I think the rollout for the one month for free is to help collect more data. It's actually a very smart idea.
I’ll never understand why American drivers call a speed limit a LIMIT when it might as well be a minimum
Tried today. Not a fan. For long drive, maybe or maybe not. Autosteer is adequate.
Slowed for a vehicle it detected because it didn’t know if the vehicle would be a problem. A human would have recognized that the vehicle was parked. FSD can’t assume the vehicle wouldn’t move. Just being cautious.
